        4 out of 5 stars Explorations.......2006-03-28

This book is very detailed and the CD-Rom has excellent pictures. The only downfall is that the mathmatical functions are not detailed enough for me.

4 out of 5 stars up to date introduction.......2005-07-19

A very solid, and up to date discussion of modern astronomy. Well suited for undergraduate astronomy majors taking a first course. You get a coherent formulation of our best understanding of galaxy formation on a cosmological scale. And also how first and second generation stars appear and evolve. Then, within a stellar system, how planets can condense out of gas.

Naturally, our solar system is well described. From both observations made on Earth and by satellites (especially the Hubble), and by US and Russian probes.

The CD will appeal to some of you. Arny has put considerable effort into it. But the main text stands well, even if the CD is missing.

This is the best Astronomy text that I have ever seen. It is filled with colorful photos and diagrams, and delves into the more interesting aspects of astronomy. A must for any Astronomy teacher, student, or amateur astronomer. It's also included with a great CD that has planetarium software on it.

4 out of 5 stars Afraid of Numbers? Then this space book is for you!.......2006-03-26

I first had the pleasure of using Mr. Damon's book, "Introduction to Space: the Science of Spaceflight," in my first few graduate classes. I was impressed by the coverage afforded in this book. Granted, this book was completely useless for technical graduate studies (I needed my 'number and equation fix') it has many uses for persons wanting to know about space without the calculations and involved physics.

The coverage of the book hits topics from brief history of spaceflight, to propulsion, orbital mechanics (without math!!), remote sensing, the Space Shuttle program, to the future of space travel. Diagrams and pictures convey the information clearly and the infoboxes have minor mathematics, for those closet 'rocket science' geeks...

The only downside to this book is not the fault of the publisher or author; it is of the book's users. This book is completely inappropriate for technical graduate level studies; as a non-technical book it has enough science to satisfy a reader's interest. This book is great for high-school/undergraduate students (or laypersons) that you're trying to get interested in spaceflight. Don't abuse grad students by having them purchase this!!!

4 out of 5 stars Decent Introduction To Space.......2004-12-06

Thomas Damon's "Introduction to Space" is a good place to start for people who are generally unfamiliar with any of the basic principles of space flight. It is comprehensible any to interested person, and is generally geared toward a high school or early collegiate reader. The text is good at simplifying the math involved and in separating it from the text, making comprehension much easier for people who are not mathematically inclined.

The book introduces most every aspect of space flight from the history of the US and Soviet space programs, to living in space. There are specific chapters that discuss orbits (although sparing the reader the math of an orbital mechanics book), space stations, the shuttle, space stations, astronomy, remote sensing, satellites, and even the potential for extraterrestrial colonization.

I was required to read this book for a class, but think this book is really only suitable for a high school or early undergraduate course. (It would be ideal for a high school physics unit on space.) I have a fairly good conceptual background in spacecraft operations, and because of that found the book a tad boring, although it occasionally did teach me something I had not previously known. The book is clearly written, and seems factually quite good. I recommend it for anyone who needs a basic introduction to spaceflight, and who has no previous background in that area.

5 out of 5 stars Showcases all aspects of spaceflight.......2001-07-04

In a fully updated and revised third edition, Thomas Damon's Introduction To Space: The Science Of Spaceflight is an information packed compendium showcasing all aspects of spaceflight, including propulsion, orbits, high resolution images of Earth from space, satellites, debris in orbit, MIR, the International Space Station, space shuttles, working in space, exploration of the Solar System and beyond, disturbances in the space environment, and more. Profusely illustrated with color as well as black-and-what photography, charts, and graphs, Introduction To Space is an informative, superbly presented, and detailed history enhanced with both common units and metric unit descriptions of all quantities; a glossary; and an index. Highly recommended for school and community library space science and history collections.

        Book Description

Philip Baker charts the history of manned space stations from the very beginning in a logical, chronological order. He tells the story of the two major space powers starting out on their very separate programs, but slowly coming together through ASTP, Shuttle-Mir, and the ISS, and includes programs that rarely get mentioned - the US Manned Orbiting Laboratory, and the Soviet Almaz station, both military backed projects.

The Mir space station was one of the greatest human achievements in modern history, and a thorough telling of its story is essential to this book. During its life it grew and evolved into a truly international outpost, with visitors from all over the world taking advantage of the only permanent space station in orbit at that time.

This book will be the only one of its kind to tell the whole story of the manned space stations from both nations, from the very beginning, to the current ISS story, and to the possibilities beyond.

Each chapter of this book will contain interviews with many of the primary participants, including the astronauts, cosmonauts, designers, mission controllers, doctors and managers most directly involved in the flights. The author paints a vivid picture of two competing nations slowly coming together to form an alliance that is shaky and uncertain to begin with, but grows from fierce competition into solid collaboration.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of Russian and American space stations .......2007-09-23

This is an excellent book that gives a clear, concise and well written overview of space stations from the American, Soviet and Russian programs. I was very impressed with the large number of illustrations and photographs most of which I had never seen before (there are about 80 figures). The color plates of illustrations showing the various stages of completion of the International Space Station were also impressive. Although the book is only about 170 pages long I believe it is the perfect length to give the reader a nice overall summary of all the space station launches. Excellent value for the low cost of the book, highly recommended !

This series has always been a great introduction to the astronomy world. Although this particular edition is outdated now, especially on some of the higher concepts of light speed travel, black holes, etc., all of the basic astronomy concepts still apply and are extremely easy to grap from this graphic-heavy book.

                  Book Description

A comprehensive security patch management process is one of the fundamental security requirements for any IT-dependent organization. Fully defining this process ensures that patches are deployed in an organized, staged manner, resulting in little or no slowdowns or downtime to network infrastructure. Until now, there were no technical books for companies to use as a starting point for deploying the process. Curing the Patch Management Headache responds to this demand by tying together all aspects of the subject into one easy-to-understand format that is applicable regardless of the operating system, network device, or patch deployment tool. This volume provides CISOs, CIROs, and IT directors and managers with the support and guidance that they need to integrate an effective patch management process into their environments. It emphasizes the importance of patch management and explains why having organizational support for the process drives successful implementation. The book details how patches should be implemented on devices and systems within an infrastructure, and how to distribute them in a timely manner.

When the eight of them - four men and four women - sign up for a literature class, they don't know that they've signed on for life. Meet the half-baked bunch - the real estate tycoon, the computer geek, the interpreter, the nurse, the stationer, the would-be writer, the teacher turned realtor, and the trek leader - an assortment of misfits who find one another at college.
