Only for the extremely clueless, not a real money makeover book.......2005-08-15
If you are at all aware of the credit and debt industry or in any way a responsible adult, this book will not help you out. The most useful piece of information I found in it was a quote from Thomas Jefferson: "Never buy what you do not want because it is cheap; it will never be dear to you."
If you are a responsible person trying to beat debt, this book is too remedial for you. This is a wake up call for people who didn't realize that when you buy something, you have to pay for it by the due date. I have more debt than I should, but I have never paid a late fee, and I keep it all at low interest. When I took the quiz in this book, the results told me, "Your debt issues are not bad and are easily resolvable."
This book is a great tutorial if you want to declare bankruptcy or you have completely stuck your head in the sand for the last 10 years about your credit score. Bankruptcy laws just changed to make it harder, however, so you might need to pick up an updated manual.
If you are a responsible person who wants to get intense about beating debt, then Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover is an absolute must-read.

Crime in the Public Mind explores the politics of crime and criminal justice, examining in depth what Americans think about penalties for criminal offenders. While some are resigned, others are desperate; a few are hopeful and forgiving, but most are frustrated and angry. In fact, fully eighty percent of the population believes that the court system should deal more harshly with criminal offenders.
In this readable account, Kathlyn Taylor Gaubatz makes use of intensive interviews with Americans from varied walks of life in order to reveal the fascinating nuances in the public's views on criminal justice, and in their motivations for holding these views. She questions our easy acceptance of the very existence of a public consensus around such a complex, intractable issue as crime. Why do Americans support harsh penal policies when crime rates are actually falling? How does this attitude square with our increasingly liberal social ideas? What logic is there to support stiff sentencing when the vast majority of the public acknowledges that prisons have been powerless to reduce crime in our nation to an acceptable level?
The author powerfully weaves narratives from those she interviewed to construct an in-depth theory about who joins and who spurns the consensus on criminal justice. She explores the complex relationship between our political beliefs and our attitudes toward crime, revealing in some cases a telling dissonance. Through careful argumentation and demonstration, Crime in the Public Mind concludes that Americans have become harsher on crime not in spite of becoming more liberal on a variety of other social issues, but at least in part because we have done so.
At a time when crime has been called the political issue of the decade, Crime in the Public Mind forces us to confront our assumptions, to sort through our fear. Two original national surveys were conducted to examine the differences between mass and elite opinion regarding the policy making decisions of the Supreme Court in the area of criminal procedure. The results of the surveys indicate that those who have obtained a legal education are generally more protective of civil libertarian ideals. However, at times, when the Supreme Court has decided against what would be considered the civil libertarian alternative, lawyers are actually less civil libertarian than the rest of the mass public. Among the mass public, knowledge and education did not play as prominent a role in shaping opinions as did demographic variables. The survey results indicate that divergent opinions regarding the root causes of crime account for the differences in opinion regarding police methods in apprehending potential defendants. Most surprising, and most significant, is that contrary to reports in the mass media, the mass public is relatively protective of civil liberties. Professor Lock then proposes approaches whereby the courts and the legal profession can work to develop an even more supportive mass public. A study of particular importance to students, scholars, and public policy makers in the areas of constitutional and criminal law and public opinion.

Callanan tests the link between individuals' media habits and punitive attitudes toward criminals, finding that the more crime-related television people watch, the more fearful they become, and the more supportive of three strikes sentencing. Although there are some differences between forms of crime-related media consumption across race/ethnicity, the link with punitiveness still holds. The test provides evidence for Gerbner's cultivation hypothesis of a "mean world" view. Heavy consumers of crime-related media are more fearful of crime, more likely to believe crime is increasing, more likely to rate crimes seriously, more likely to believe the world is "just," less likely to support rehabilitation, and much more likely to support three strikes sentencing.

Great book - The basics on everything you need to know about drinking with plenty of humor thrown in. I'd advise buying it for everyone you know who is turning 21! For the more experienced drinker, it's mostly things you will have already known, but there's some interesting history and lots of laughs. Definitely worth the short time it takes to read through. Crack open a bottle and get started!

The previous review appears to be for the Spirit book dealing with Haunted Ghost stories; this book is actually the "Spirit Casebook", which includes many classic tales. The stories are some of Eisner's best; this book is also excellent for anyone just being introduced to the Spirit.

In this 160 page paperback, The Spirit appeared only as a host (rather like one of the characters in one of the old EC stories, except The Spirit did not make a ghastly pun or crack at the end of each story!) to tell 'true' accounts of haunting or appearances of ghostly apparitions. In most cases the source of each case is given, the majority of these accounts being set in Great Britain over a hundred years ago. While not in the "spirit" of The Spirit (to the letter), this is a wonderfully fun book and truly worth the effort of finding, Eisner fan or not.

Repetition.......2007-03-09
First, allow me to state that I really dig Stan Freberg. Ever since I found his "A Child's Garden of Freberg" in my grandmothers record collection, I've been a big fan. That being said, if you own the first volume of The Stan Freberg Show, there's not that much on this collection to warrant you buying it. He reprises many of the schticks from the first volume, and the only skit that comes close to "Incident at Los Cruces" (if that was the title from the first volume,) is the skit where as an ad-man he turns into a werewolf. A must have for the true fan and avid collector, but most who don't own lots of Stan would be better off buying the "The United States of America parts I and II".

I forgot when I started to listen to my dad's old LP's in England, (Children's Garden... and the two Best of...), but the humour was something extraordinary. It was my first experience of an American Radio Show and had no comparison to anything playing on the BBC at the time. I never did get into the Goons.
Some years ago, I was able to buy my dad the 2nd collection on cassette tape (he never did have a CD payer), and a copy for me on CD....and now I own the 1st collection too with all my original favourites, especially "Incident at Las Varoces" and "The Banana Boat Song", (which dad had on '78).
It is strange to think that I was not even born when these shows went out, but the sharp and witty humour continues and I now have it on a medium that I can pass on to my boys.
The Second Half of the Complete Collection.......2000-07-27
Suprised to find this in the "books" section - it is also listed in the "music" section, along with its companion volume. When Smithsonian issued the complete Stan Freberg Shows Collection back in 1997, they issued it in two volumes - this is the second of the two (the first is listed elsewhere at Amazon).
Stan was at his artistic peak when these shows were produced. After this, he would go into advertising with increasing success. This collection (both volumes), and the first volume of "United States Of America" (also available on CD, thankfully) can be considered the apogee of his entertainment career.
True, there may be some folks who don't want to sit through the enire show just to hear their favorite bit. That is what "breakout" collections (like the 2LP Capitol set, "The Best Of The Stan Freberg Shows") are for. If you like what you hear on the "best of" collections, odds are you'll love the complete shows that those bits came from. And they're all here on these two volumes.
