Old Style, Few Pictures.......2006-08-05

This is a rather poor book. It resembles an enciclopedia from the 80s. Anyone who has used googleearth will find the pictures pretty boring. The design of the ilustrations is boring, nothing like the good maps natgeo is sending in its recent issues. Actually I wonder if it is just a reprint of old material, refurrnished and actualized with a photo of the hubble space telescope.

Dont buy it. I am returning it.

I agree, in part, with what each of the previous reviews. The first half of the book holds information on astronomy and the planets. The information in this half of the book is up to date and holds some interesting facts. It not only holds the entries on the history of astronomy, but entries for dark matter, the accelerating universe and more. The solar system section holds the latest information about the planets. However, it was published before the Cassini mission's close flyby of Saturn and the Huygens probe's visit to Titan.

The last half of the book is about the space program, satellites, etc. There were a few obvious errors in that section, but most of the information was pretty interesting and useful.

This book is not really up to date as far as I am concerned!
Mostly old stuff! Actually I wish I had gone to a book store
and reviewed what they have first hand. This is a lot of money
for its' worth!

Not very impressed.......2005-01-12

While I'm not very impressed by the book in general - it's far from what my conception of 'encyclopedia' is, I am impressed by number of misprints/errors I came over shortly after opening the book. For example, I learned that the edge of space is at 1,025 kilmeters (page 331) and the first manned space flight was in April 12, 1959 (page 334). Will probably keep this book as a picture album because illustrations are rather nice.

This magnificently written and illustrated book is like taking a flight through space without leaving the comfort of your reading chair! Book Description

A comprehensive treatment of current fastening technology including inserts, post-installed anchors, as well as power-actuated fasteners, in both concrete and masonry. The section "Fastenings in Concrete" describes in detail these elements together with their behavior and load-bearing capacities in cracked and uncracked concrete, while also considering the effects of corrosion and fire, as well as earthquake and shock loading. It concludes with an assessment of fastenings, illustrated by numerous examples. The "Fastenings in Masonry" section goes on to deal with several different types of masonry and describes the load bearing characteristics with an assessment of plastic fastenings and injection-molded anchors, including criteria for selecting the correct fastening.

The concepts and ideas in this book are covered very well.
Where other references and text books only scratch the surface and do not give engineers guidance in more challenging applications, this book helps tremendously.

This book will also help engineers undertand the mechanisms and failure modes of anchoring which is required now in the United State's International Building Code.

Description: Some construction methods require fastening a concrete, steel, or timber member to a tilt-up, precast, or cast-in-place concrete element. This is accomplished through headed bolts, L- or J-bolts, or steel studs welded to a steel assembly embedded in the concrete. In this first edition of the manual, the background of design provisions for strength design of cast-in-place anchorage to concrete is described. Six design examples illustrate application of the provisions.

Abstract: The background of design provisions for strength design of cast-in-place anchorage to concrete is described. The procedure is based on the Concrete Capacity Design method. It accounts for group, edge, and eccentricity effects, as well as concrete cracking and presence of reinforcement within the concrete breakout failure surface. Six design examples illustrate application of the provisions. Design provisions and commentary are presented in appendices. The provisions will appear in the first edition of the International Building Code (IBC 2000). These provisions were prepared by ACI Committee 318, but were not completed in time for incorporation as Appendix D to ACI 318-99. With permission from ACI, the proposed code and commentary are reproduced in appendices to the manual
