        Book Description

In the 1960s and 1970s deep space missions were dispatched in pairs in case one was lost in launch or failed during its journey. Following the triumphs of the Viking landings on Mars in 1976 and both Voyagers spacecraft successfully surveying the outer giant planets of the Solar System, it was decided by NASA to cut costs and send out just a single probe.

Although Magellan successfully mapped Venus by radar, it suffered from problems during the flight. Then came the loss of Mars Observer, whose engine exploded as it was preparing to enter Mars’ orbit because it was using technology designed for Earth’s satellites and the engine was not suited to spending several months in space. Later came the high-profile losses of Mars Climate Observer and Mars Polar Lander - a consequence of the faster, better, cheaper philosophy introduced by Dan Goldin in 1993. Even the highly successful Galileo mission suffered a major setback when its high-gain antenna (also based on satellite mission suffered a major setback when its high-gain antenna (also based on satellite communication technology) failed to deploy fully, greatly diminishing the craft’s radio transmission capabilities, forcing the ground crew to re-programme the on-board computer to enable it to fulfil its mission and provide stunning images of Jupiter and its moons.

In Space Systems Failures, David Harland (here working with co-author Ralph Lorenz) describes the many quite fascinating tales of woe involving failures of rockets, satellites and deep space missions in his inimitable style, providing a unique insight into the trials and tribulations of exploration at the high frontier.

        5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-09-22

This book needs to be read by everyone in the Space industry, especially those in quality organizations. Remember, those unaware of the past are doomed to repeat it .....

4 out of 5 stars so many types of failures.......2007-03-14

Harland takes us considerably beyond the simple news reporting of a space system failure. We learn that these have occurred quite frequently in the last 50 years. The book gives an appreciation why. Starting with the fact that the launch rockets are essentially large bombs, that have hopefully controlled explosions. But not always.

Then, when the probe or satellite gets into space, much else can go awry. The batteries might fail. The communication chips that talk to ground control might have been misprogrammed. The gyroscope needed to orient the satellite could be defective. And so on. If you are an engineer, the book is a nice education in what has to work in most space systems.

5 out of 5 stars A priceless preservation of institutional memory - and fun to read!.......2005-12-03

This is an excellent book that IMHO anyone in the space business should read. Over 350 pages covering literally hundreds of cases of "what went wrong" with launchers, satellites, missions, instruments, designs, and procedures from the 1940s to the present. It is well written, entertaining, highly educational, and can be read in many short sittings since the average incident description is about one page long. The book not only covers what went wrong, but in many cases also what was done to fix it. "Space Systems Failures" is a valiant and perhaps unequaled attempt to preserve institutional memory and the lessons learned, often at great price, by the world's space programs.

        5 out of 5 stars It's a wonder..........2005-09-23

I've been a fan of the space program since I can remember! After reading this book, it makes one wonder how we get anything up at all. I've learned a few more things than I knew before!

Knowing even the so-called 'experts' screw up, and some of the incidents dissected in this book could apply to ANY industry. Unless you follow carefully, it's easy to lose track of which satellite, bus, or mission is discussed. I consider this book a very enjoyable read.

        3 out of 5 stars Good Survey.......2005-09-13

Good at identifying launch failure events and summarizing history, but lacks details on the actual failure modes. Tough area to cover since much of the info is classified, proprietary or lost deep in corporate files.

        Book Description

Hydrocarbon exploration and production incorporate great technology challenges for the oil and gas industry. In order to meet the world's future demand for oil and gas, further technological advance is needed, which in turn requires research across multiple disciplines, including mathematics, geophysics, geology, petroleum engineering, signal processing, and computer science.

This book addresses important aspects and fundamental concepts in hydrocarbon exploration and production. Moreover, new developments and recent advances in the relevant research areas are discussed, whereby special emphasis is placed on mathematical methods and modelling. The book reflects the multi-disciplinary character of the hydrocarbon production workflow, ranging from seismic data imaging, seismic analysis and interpretation and geological model building, to numerical reservoir simulation. Various challenges concerning the production workflow are discussed in detail.

The thirteen chapters of this joint work, authored by international experts from academic and industrial institutions, include survey papers of expository character as well as original research articles. Large parts of the material presented in this book were developed between November 2000 and April 2004 through the European research and training network NetAGES, "Network for Automated Geometry Extraction from Seismic". The new methods described here are currently being implemented as software tools at Schlumberger Stavanger Research, one of the world's largest service providers to the oil industry.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars intensive modelling.......2006-10-10

The search for petroleum, and the maximal extraction of it, is crucial to the continued prosperity of the world. Hence this book is of very practical interest. The chapters show a wide range of skills and ideas, drawn from geology, geophysics, mathematics and computing. For the latter, we see interesting ideas and a massive computational modelling of underground deposits.

The signal analysis is very convoluted, when it comes to trying to reconstruct the layout of an oil field. What is also interesting is the modelling of the effects of pumping fluids into such a field. An active method that seeks to squeeze out as much of the oil or gas as possible.

Keep in mind that the latest modelling ideas are probably not described here. But are held as proprietary.

        Book Description

This exciting text provides a mathematically rigorous yet accessible textbook that is primarily aimed at atmospheric science majors. Its accessibility is due to the texts emphasis on conceptual understanding.

The first five chapters constitute a companion text to introductory courses covering the dynamics of the mid-latitude atmosphere. The final four chapters constitute a more advanced course, and provide insights into the diagnostic power of the quasi-geostrophic approximation of the equations outlined in the previous chapters, the meso-scale dynamics of thefrontal zone, the alternative PV perspective for cyclone interpretation, and the dynamics of the life-cycle of mid-latitude cyclones.

A Solutions Manual is also available for this textbook on the Instructor Companion Site www.wileyeurope.com/college/martin.

          Book Description

Since the Industrial Revolution the chemical composition of the atmosphere has changed at a rate unprecedented in recent history. Ozone depletion emerged as one of the most important environmental issues of the 20th century as evidence grew for substantial human influences on the atmospheric ozone abundances over much of the globe. The science of the ozone layer and its interactions with halogenated chemical compounds are the primary subjects of this book. The volume provides a comprehensive view of the chemical, dynamical, and radiative processes that affect ozone and other chemicals in the stratosphere and mesosphere. Over recent decades our understanding of these processes has increased dramatically. The discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole has shown that human activities can lead to major changes in our environment. From a review of a previous edition - "[…] an interesting and well-written overview of the current status of our knowledge of the composition of the middle atmosphere and the basic radiative, dynamical and photochemical processes which maintain it." Book Description

The book covers topics confined to dynamical coupling processes in the Earth's lower and middle atmosphere in order to examine progress in a relatively focused area. Nevertheless, the results span spatial scales from molecular to global, and temporal scales from seconds to decades. The unifying theme in all areas is the strong interactions occurring between various scales of motion. The articles represent contributions to a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in Norway in May 1992. They are written by some of the leading experts in the field and are of interest to specialists in the field of atmospheric dynamics as well as to students at graduate and doctorate levels.

                          Book Description

Kato, the Akito dog pet of Nicole Brown Simpson, was the only eyewitness to her killing and that of Ron Goldman. Drenched in blood, Kato ran through the streets and brought neighbors to the bodies. He now "barks" out his story, of not only the killings but also of the hedonistic Simpson lifestyle - symbolic, Kato believes, of degenerate humans in general, which he contrasts to noble canines.

5 out of 5 stars AWSOME and FUNNY.......2002-08-04

This was the best book I have read in a while !!!
                          2 thumbs up !!!!!!!!!!!! KATO

                          1 out of 5 stars Horrible book.......2001-10-18

This book is a perversion. It is an affront to Nicole and Ron's memory. I bought it thinking it would have accounts from akita knowledgeable people relating their opinons about the case. Not so. It is supposed to be done in cheek yet I see nothing funny about the murders of two people. There are excerpts in their that are perversions. I don't believe in censorship but would make an exception in this case. If I ever find it at a library I shall check it out and burn it to save others the fate of seeing it. No research about akitas was preformed before publishing obviously and I don't think the person that wrote it even likes dogs. To top it off the writting is horrible. One run-on sentence was 2 pages long! My opinion is don't waste your money or time. My copy shall be used as TP. It is not fit for anything else.

                          4 out of 5 stars A pretty hilarious book.......2001-06-11

I loved the premise, because I remember back during O.J.'s trial, people were saying if only the dog could talk, he could identify the killer. Well, this dog does. I won't give it away, but it is right on. Kato even has a website that is updated a lot,...

My favorite part has got to be the chapter that takes off on what Faye Resnick, Nicole's best friend, wrote in her bestseller, that Nicole and she had a single 'physical' encounter after a wild night of drinking and whatever.

In the dog's version, Faye gets confused and drags Kato into her bed. Very funny.

                          5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2001-06-11

I was a big fan of the whole O.J. trial, so I was happy to see that the book followed real events in that crazy saga, even down to how O.J. was embarrassed by his father coming out of the closet and abandoning his family, only to die of AIDS back in the mid-80s.

The most hilarious part is a take-off on the claim by Faye Resnick, one of Nicole's friends and a media star back during the trial, that Nicole seduced her one time and one time only just weeks before the murders, after a wild night of drugs, booze and dancing. All of Nicole's family and friends roundly denounced Faye as a liar who put that in her book just to get rich. In this deranged version, the dog Kato goes along on that night, riding in the car and getting high with the women as they hit nightspots and flirt with men. They all stagger into Faye's place where Nicole passes out. Faye is so wrecked that when she drags Kato into her bed, she thinks he is a very hairy Nicole.

There's another real funny scene when a jealous O.J., dressed up in the frogman outfit he got for starring in a movie actually called "The Frogman," sneaks up outside Nicole's condo as she entertains a guy. It is true that Nicole had this deathly fear of frogs, and so O.J. opens a window and dumps a load of live frogs into the living room, which send Nicole shrieking with fear. Then O.J. stumbles into the room, bellowing at the top of his lungs, then trips over his frog feet.

                          A great read.
