Space Systems Failures: Disasters and Rescues of Satellites, Rockets and Space Probes
David M. Harland , and Ralph D. Lorenz Manufacturer: Praxis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

ASIN: 0387215190 |
Book Description
In the 1960s and 1970s deep space missions were dispatched in pairs in case one was lost in launch or failed during its journey. Following the triumphs of the Viking landings on Mars in 1976 and both Voyagers spacecraft successfully surveying the outer giant planets of the Solar System, it was decided by NASA to cut costs and send out just a single probe.
Although Magellan successfully mapped Venus by radar, it suffered from problems during the flight. Then came the loss of Mars Observer, whose engine exploded as it was preparing to enter Mars’ orbit because it was using technology designed for Earth’s satellites and the engine was not suited to spending several months in space. Later came the high-profile losses of Mars Climate Observer and Mars Polar Lander - a consequence of the faster, better, cheaper philosophy introduced by Dan Goldin in 1993. Even the highly successful Galileo mission suffered a major setback when its high-gain antenna (also based on satellite mission suffered a major setback when its high-gain antenna (also based on satellite communication technology) failed to deploy fully, greatly diminishing the craft’s radio transmission capabilities, forcing the ground crew to re-programme the on-board computer to enable it to fulfil its mission and provide stunning images of Jupiter and its moons.
In Space Systems Failures, David Harland (here working with co-author Ralph Lorenz) describes the many quite fascinating tales of woe involving failures of rockets, satellites and deep space missions in his inimitable style, providing a unique insight into the trials and tribulations of exploration at the high frontier.

Mathematical Methods and Modelling in Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production (Mathematics in Industry)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540225366 |
Book Description
Hydrocarbon exploration and production incorporate great technology challenges for the oil and gas industry. In order to meet the world's future demand for oil and gas, further technological advance is needed, which in turn requires research across multiple disciplines, including mathematics, geophysics, geology, petroleum engineering, signal processing, and computer science.
This book addresses important aspects and fundamental concepts in hydrocarbon exploration and production. Moreover, new developments and recent advances in the relevant research areas are discussed, whereby special emphasis is placed on mathematical methods and modelling. The book reflects the multi-disciplinary character of the hydrocarbon production workflow, ranging from seismic data imaging, seismic analysis and interpretation and geological model building, to numerical reservoir simulation. Various challenges concerning the production workflow are discussed in detail.
The thirteen chapters of this joint work, authored by international experts from academic and industrial institutions, include survey papers of expository character as well as original research articles. Large parts of the material presented in this book were developed between November 2000 and April 2004 through the European research and training network NetAGES, "Network for Automated Geometry Extraction from Seismic". The new methods described here are currently being implemented as software tools at Schlumberger Stavanger Research, one of the world's largest service providers to the oil industry.

Aeronomy of the Middle Atmosphere: Chemistry and Physics of the Stratosphere and Mesosphere (Atmospheric and Oceanographic Sciences Library)
Guy P. Brasseur , and Susan Solomon Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402032846 |
Book Description
Since the Industrial Revolution the chemical composition of the atmosphere has changed at a rate unprecedented in recent history. Ozone depletion emerged as one of the most important environmental issues of the 20th century as evidence grew for substantial human influences on the atmospheric ozone abundances over much of the globe. The science of the ozone layer and its interactions with halogenated chemical compounds are the primary subjects of this book. The volume provides a comprehensive view of the chemical, dynamical, and radiative processes that affect ozone and other chemicals in the stratosphere and mesosphere. Over recent decades our understanding of these processes has increased dramatically. The discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole has shown that human activities can lead to major changes in our environment. From a review of a previous edition - "[…] an interesting and well-written overview of the current status of our knowledge of the composition of the middle atmosphere and the basic radiative, dynamical and photochemical processes which maintain it." Coupling Processes in the Lower and Middle Atmosphere (NATO Science Series C:)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792321278 |
Book Description
The book covers topics confined to dynamical coupling processes in the Earth's lower and middle atmosphere in order to examine progress in a relatively focused area. Nevertheless, the results span spatial scales from molecular to global, and temporal scales from seconds to decades. The unifying theme in all areas is the strong interactions occurring between various scales of motion. The articles represent contributions to a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in Norway in May 1992. They are written by some of the leading experts in the field and are of interest to specialists in the field of atmospheric dynamics as well as to students at graduate and doctorate levels.

O.J.'s Dog Daze: The Only Eyewitness Account to the Simpson Murders, and the Simpson Lives
Kato D'Akita Manufacturer: Writer's Showcase Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0595173543 |
Book Description
Kato, the Akito dog pet of Nicole Brown Simpson, was the only eyewitness to her killing and that of Ron Goldman. Drenched in blood, Kato ran through the streets and brought neighbors to the bodies. He now "barks" out his story, of not only the killings but also of the hedonistic Simpson lifestyle - symbolic, Kato believes, of degenerate humans in general, which he contrasts to noble canines.Customer Reviews:
AWSOME and FUNNY.......2002-08-04
Horrible book.......2001-10-18
A pretty hilarious book.......2001-06-11
My favorite part has got to be the chapter that takes off on what Faye Resnick, Nicole's best friend, wrote in her bestseller, that Nicole and she had a single 'physical' encounter after a wild night of drinking and whatever.
In the dog's version, Faye gets confused and drags Kato into her bed. Very funny.
A great read!.......2001-06-11
The most hilarious part is a take-off on the claim by Faye Resnick, one of Nicole's friends and a media star back during the trial, that Nicole seduced her one time and one time only just weeks before the murders, after a wild night of drugs, booze and dancing. All of Nicole's family and friends roundly denounced Faye as a liar who put that in her book just to get rich. In this deranged version, the dog Kato goes along on that night, riding in the car and getting high with the women as they hit nightspots and flirt with men. They all stagger into Faye's place where Nicole passes out. Faye is so wrecked that when she drags Kato into her bed, she thinks he is a very hairy Nicole.
There's another real funny scene when a jealous O.J., dressed up in the frogman outfit he got for starring in a movie actually called "The Frogman," sneaks up outside Nicole's condo as she entertains a guy. It is true that Nicole had this deathly fear of frogs, and so O.J. opens a window and dumps a load of live frogs into the living room, which send Nicole shrieking with fear. Then O.J. stumbles into the room, bellowing at the top of his lungs, then trips over his frog feet.
A great read.
