3 out of 5 stars Good Market Advise; Bad Real Estate Advise.......2001-07-08

The author states at the end of his book that he is a millionaire and that he got that way by following his own advise. I guess that means he was heavy into index mutual funds since that is what his kit promotes. I'd be willing to bet that he's no longer the proud owner of a million-dollar portfolio after the dive the markets have taken since this book was published.

To his credit, he advises to begin to shift assets and build a bond ladder when you get within ten years of your retirement date. If he, himself, was eleven years out, he will probably have to move his planned retirement date well out into the future.

Pushing the stock market is an easy book to write. Discounting real estate, as the author does, is also a trend among the current crop of market pushers, but I think it does a disservice to their readers to advise people to rent rather than buy your principal residence or to not invest in equity by prepaying your mortgage.

No one I know has built wealth via the stock market. On the other hand, I personally know several who did so investing in residential real estate. And while the market has gone south for the last two years, real estate is still steady as a rock.

Rental real estate is real work, but so is the daily grind of earning the money to invest in the market. Common sense sweat-equity investing is still the most certain road to financial independence.

I invest in the market but my wealth is accumulating in real estate.

5 out of 5 stars Don't be put off by the title.......1999-03-25

Although the title of this book is rather trite the content is not. Nelson does a great job of weighing the various pros and cons of common financial decisions. (I recently took his advice and began putting a small 'windfall' into my 403b account - doubling the monthly amount taken out of my salary. And just like he stated with taxes being reduced my paycheck was NOT reduced to the extent that I thought it would be. I also learned much about adjusted mortgage rates. Although sometimes Nelson's advice is controversial he lays it out in a logical and convincing format. I particularly enjoyed the dicussion about what retirement is and isn't. It's a simple cliche', but money doesn't buy happiness -- it just helps to deal with certain stressors better! By the way the CD-ROM is great. Very practical tools for strategizing scenarios with your money. Buy this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Concise, complete and very practical.......1998-12-05

I really like this book - it is complete and easy to read. The concepts described are straightforward and organized so the book can be read over many sittings, if desired, without losing the big picture. The emphasis is "bit-by-bit" saving and investing ideas combined with interest compounding to build wealth.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting, and helpful.......1998-10-31

I found this book easy to understand and a surprisingly quick to read. I don't really want to be a millionaire for the sake of being rich, but it's nice to know how to plan it right, and retire in 20 yrs and never work again.

Some of the ideas were definitely not tradional beliefs (like, it may make more sense to rent a house than buy one) But It makes perfect sense when you see the big picture.

The title is a pretty cheesy, and not really what the book is about... it should really be called "How to become financially independent through saving and investing"

Most people have access to a 401K plan.. which is basically what the book focusses on, but there's lots of other good info on how to save on insurance and a scary "Cost of Habit" calcualtor that tells you how much money you could make in 20 years if you quit drinking espresso... or quit smoking... Yikes!

Overall it was very informative, and helpful for just about anyone who is interested in knowing how and where to save your money, and how to turn it into a nice little nestegg.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, encouraging advice for long-term wealth building........1998-10-03

I enjoyed the down-to-earth advice and the excellent CD-ROM worksheets for calculating what I want and what I need to stash away. Good suggestions for finding more cash by simplifying life choices.

    3 out of 5 stars Retail Merchandising.......2007-01-21

I bought this book for my merchandising principles class at the fashion school. I never once referred to this book for any information. If you're interested in learning about retail buying and the accounting principles and math behind it, I would recommend purchasing a book that is specifically for that purpose. Usually, in accounting and mathematics books, there are general summary of the industry and practices, then they delve into the quantitative portion. There is no use getting this book. It will put you to sleep. FAST!

2 out of 5 stars Fashion Buying for the 1970's.......1998-02-25

Diamond and Pintel's 5th Edition continues to focus solely on Retail Buying for the Fashion (softlines) industry. The focus is on high end retailers Macys, Nieman Marcus and The Limited. There is only cursory mentions of other retail types.

While some of their basic principles are sound, the technology is 20 - 30 years behind the times. Therefore, a student interested in improving their marketability is sorely served by text that constantly refers to paper forms, "the growing use of computers" and the increased use of the UPC.

Only a good read if you are interested in how retail fashion buying was conducted in the 1970's.

5 out of 5 stars Ancient civilizations' overview.......2007-08-21

This book assembles a large number of evidences left by ancient civilizations. Written in an "adventure" format, the reading is quite easy and captivating. You'll enjoy better the subjects that you know little or nothing about (since it would not be possible to collect all the details over a so large number of occurrences).
Strongly recommended for those searching for an initiation on the "ancient civilizations" quest.

              4 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2007-08-06

My husband introduced me to this book while we were dating and I enjoyed it. The author, Graham Hancock, has visited the sites of ancient civilizations in Egypt, Peru, China, Easter Island, and such, and has found evidence of similar and very advanced methods of construction, mathematics, and water management as well as parallel legends that originated at these far-flung places.

              5 out of 5 stars highly recomended.......2007-06-11

This thought provoking piece of investigative archeology will inspire you to think about the mysteries of the origin of our civilisation. Very well written so that even moderatly educated people can come to grips with highly technical conclusions that are arrived at using common sense and logic.

              4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-06-05

I found most of this book utterly fascinating. I found that Hancock's ideas about all the similiarities between Ancient cultures pretty enlightening. I never realized that so many of the myths were so common among the ancient people like the story of the great flood or deluge. One has to wonder if they new about it, witnessed it, or it was orally passed down. This part of the book was great. You start asking yourself how did these similar stories get around the globe? How did the similarities in their building techniques get around the globe?

And here is where Hancock wants you to take a GIANT leap. For him all of it, everything from the stories to buildings to the gods they worshipped came from a so-called "Lost Civilization" that he thinks lived on Antartica. Fine, I can certainly see how one may come to this conclusion. But I think Hancock simply ignores easier theories because he so blindly believes his own with a scary single-minded tenacity. Hancock himself goes into great detail about how he believes that the ancients were great sailors of the oceans. The boats found buried near the pyramids gives this pretty good footing. So if they were such good sailors and were mapping the continents, Couldn't they have also spread their way of life and their knowledge this way? Couldn't it be as simple as a 'sharing of ideas' among the ancient cultures rather that some hidden, unseen, secret civilization teaching everyone their secrets? I mean the ancient egyptians could have easily sailed to the Americans and shared their building techniques and religious stories. If not the egyptians if could have been the Minoans.

I did like a lot of this book but I think sometimes Mr. Hancock is searching for something so extrodinary that he sometimes ignores the very clues and facts that he DOES find. If you don't believe me read his other books. He is so dead set on there being a "lost" society that he refuses to see somethinge right in front of his face.

3 out of 5 stars No connective tissue.......2007-06-04

The basic gist of the book it: (1) there was an advanced human civilization that developed on what is not Antarctica before the last Ice Age when the continent was habitable and further north; (2) this civilization developed sea-faring technology and journeyed to South/Central America, Egypt/the Middle East, and India; (3) these people passed on aspects of their culture and technology which have come down to us through myths, legends, and certain physical structures.

Hancock takes a lot of cultural traditions and archeological evidence and tries to fit it all into his over-arching thesis; it's kind of like a "unified theory of pre-history." True, it's very interesting and true, there are really no adequate explanations for some his evidence but that's very far from making the case. There just isn't much connective tissue here; it's mostly bizarre pieces of data stuck together with conjecture and imagination (or, as Hancock puts it: intuition).

To read this book and conclude that Hancock has "proved" the existence of pre-glacial civilization(s) (as have some reviewers here, apparently), you would have to be a moron. I have to admit, however, that there is enough here to give one pause. One cannot completely dismiss the theory.

It certainly seems possible (and, perhaps, even probable) that humanity reached some degree of civilization before the last Ice Age and all the global climatic catastrophes that went with it. But Antarctica? Even if you accept the explanation that the continent suddenly shifted south by 2,000 miles about 15,000 years ago, why would this super-civilization emerge there and so outpace human societal evolution elsewhere in the world? How would people have gotten there in the first place (or would Hancock claim that a branch of the human race evolved there independent of Africa and elsewhere?)

I could go on but I won't. Bottom line is: interesting but not compelling. It's an interesting theory and might even be possible, but lots of things are possible. FotG does not "prove" anything; it just presents one tantalizing theory to explain historical oddities that will probably never be explained.

From the supplier: GRAFCO PET Packaging Technologies has developed a 32-ounce plastic container for packaging mayonnaise. Tests showed that these plastic containers have an average oxygen regression rate of 0.048 cc/pckg/day compared to 0.20/cc/pck/day for glass containers. The company also developed liquid nitrogen injection technology which pressurizes the container during the filling process to prevent paneling and extend shelf life.

The theory of Plate Tectonics is now taught as absolute truth. There are a number of alternative theories. One alternative is that the Earth is expanding in radius size. Hugh Owen believed this. As the head of the Department of Palaeontology of the British Museum he had access to the best ocean floor data and the skill to put it together in an understandible way. He has compiled meticulously detailed sets of maps here showing reconstruction of the Earth going back to 80% of its current radius. There are full world maps for a broad view. There are specific region maps of narrow areas (like the separation of N. America from Africa) that show the exact ocean age dates of expansion. Plate Tectonic theory accepts that the Earth expands at the mid-ocean ridges, but then the theory developed the assumption of "subduction" in 1967 to remove this expansion. Ocean floor drilling was not completed until the 1980's and it did not confirm subduction. The Pacific Basin was surprisingly found to be not far older than the Atlantic Basin (as was expected), but the same age. Dr. Owens ocean data uses the newer data from the 1970's and 1980's. While accepting some subduction, Dr. Owens also shows the need for some expansion and backs up his claims with clear, detailed, graphic evidence.

                                      Book Description

A real storyteller can make a great story out of anything, even the most trivial occurrence. Composed between 1863 and 1875, the sixty-three often outrageous sketches in Sketches, New and Old contain, for instance, a piece about the difficulty of getting a pocket watch repaired properly; complaints about barbers and office bores; and satirical comments on bureaucrats, courts of law, the profession of journalism, the claims of science, and the workings of government. In Mark Twain's hands, all these potentially dry and dull topics bristle with vitality and interest. "What fascinates Twain," Lee Smith writes in her introduction, is how people "react to the things that happen to them." Twain "lets them speak in their own voices by and large, in a chorus ranging from high-flown oratory to the plain speech of working people.... It seems generally true that the more elevated the speech, the likelier that person is to be an idiot; words of wisdom and common sense are invariably voiced by the common man"--or woman. "The most profound and moving sketch in this whole collection" Smith writes, is one "told by a freed slave." The candid, ironic, playful, and petulant sketches in this volume are indispensable to our understanding of a harried genius during thirteen quite amazing years.

What I refer to is this: he says my jumping Frog is a funny story, but still he can't see why it should ever really convulse any one with laughter--and straightway proceeds to translate it into French in order to prove to his nation that there is nothing so very extravagantly funny about it. Just there is where my complaint originates. He has not translated it at all; he has simply mixed it all up.
