Total Risk: Nick Leeson and the Fall of Barings Bank

Customer Reviews:
An Enjoyable Read.......1999-12-09
It is true that this author focuses as much on the role of management in the fall of Barings as on Nick Leeson's role in it, which is fine. It is an opinion that she substantiates somewhat persuasively throughout the book. The reader gets the sense that Nick was just an opportunist who took advantage of a glaring management weakness at Barings. (The author will not be able to persuade you, however, that Nick is just a good guy who slipped. He's scum. I think the author was too lenient with him.) But through her account of Baring Bank's mismanagement of its Futures division, the author provides a very useful lesson for senior management out there.
Pretty dull really.......1997-08-07

Collaborative Planning in Supply Chains: A Negotiation-Based Approach (Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems)
Gregor Dudek Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 3540204571 |
Book Description
The book deals with collaborative planning, an approach to supply chain planning which aims to coordinate planning tasks of independent supply chain partners while respecting their local decision authority. The major contribution of this work is to provide a process model concerned with the decision making and negotiation aspects of collaborative planning. Taking technological means for data exchange as a given, it sketches a detailed picture of a collaborative planning process at the medium-term level of master planning, assuming that mathematical programming models are used by all partners. Building on the planning process, it indicates how financial outcomes and partner incentives are affected by the negotiations of supply quantities between buyers and suppliers, and demonstrates how supply contract terms can be adapted in order to establish a win-win situation for all partners.

Book Description
MATLAB is used in a wide range of applications in geosciences, such as image processing in remote sensing, generation and processing of digital elevation models and the analysis of time series. This book introduces basic methods of data analysis in geosciences using MATLAB. The text includes a brief description of each method and numerous examples demonstrating how MATLAB can be used on data sets from earth sciences. All MATLAB recipes can be easily modified in order to analyse the reader's own data sets. The book comes with a CD containing exemplary data sets and a digital version of the MATLAB recipes.

Geographic Information Systems for Geoscientists: Modelling with GIS (Computer Methods in the Geosciences)
G.F. Bonham-Carter Manufacturer: Pergamon ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0080424201 |
Book Description
This valuable reference book is unique in its coverage of examples from the geological sciences, many centred on applications to mineral exploration. The underlying principles of GIS are stressed and emphasis placed on the analysis and modelling of spatial data with applications to site selection and potential mapping. The book commences with a definition of GIS and describes a case study of mapping mineral potential. The ways in which spatial data are organized with models (raster, vector, relational) are discussed and data structures, such as quadtrees and topological structures are introduced. Data input including digitizing, geographic projections and conversions is covered together with output (visualization, representation of colour and spatial query). Spatial data transformations are dealt with thoroughly and attention is paid to map analysis and modelling as related to single maps, map pairs and multiple maps respectively. Methods of quantifying the associations between pairs of maps are emphasized. Finally, examples of landfill site selection and mineral potential mapping illustrate the application of map algebra for combining maps and tables with models, employing Boolean logic, index weighting, fuzzy logic and probability methods such as weights of evidence. There is an extensive glossary of terms, and references accompany each chapter. Contains 40 pages of colour illustrations.Customer Reviews:

The Current Role of Geological Mapping in Geosciences: Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Innovative Applications of GIS in Geological ... IV: Earth and Environmental Sciences)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402035497 |
Product Description
The book contains private views of experts from various countries on the role of geological mapping in sustainable development. New technologies and concepts are presented, which are either awaiting for recognition by Geological Surveys, or are gradually applied in some survey. The target of the book is well worded in the "Summary and recommendations" elaborated by the Ad Hoc Committee at the Advanced ResearchWorkshop on Innovative Geological Cartography, held under NATO sponsorship in Poland in November 2003. After the "Summaries" were issued by the end of 2003, the authors who presented their views at the Workshop, gave revised versions of their papers with more new ideas and materials. Generally, the book is addressed to cartographers in Geological Surveys, geologists and geographers co-operating with landuse planners, ecologists and decision makers, who may learn about the state-of-the-art and the enormous information potential of the modern information technologies in Geosciences. The book, however, gives no methodological recipes but, as it was authors' intention, may and shall be used as a guide-book in modernizing Information Technologies at the local, regional and national levels in Geosciences.

Geoscience After IT
T. V. Loudon Manufacturer: Pergamon Press Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0080436722 |
Book Description
Hardbound. Most geoscientists are aware of recent IT developments, but cannot spend time on obscure technicalities. Few have considered their implications for the science as a whole. Yet the information industry is moving fast: electronic delivery of hyperlinked multimedia; standards to support interdisciplinary and geographic integration; new models to represent and visualize our concepts, and control and manage our activities; plummeting costs that force the pace. To stay on course, the scientist needs a broad appreciation of the complex and profound interactions of geoscience and IT, not previously reviewed in a single work. The book brings together ideas from many sources, some probably unfamiliar, that bear on the geoscience information system. It encourages readers to give thought to areas that, for various reasons, they have taken for granted, and to take a view on forces affecting geoscience, the consequences for themselves and their organ
