Wetlands in Central Europe
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540434747 |
Book Description
Wetlands are very sensitive ecosystems, functioning as habitat for many organisms. Protection and regeneration of wetlands are of great importance in ecological research and in nature conservation. A great amount of research has been done on the hydrology, plants and animals in wetlands. Knowledge on soil organisms and soil ecological processes of wetlands is still lacking. This knowledge is highly needed for landscape planning purposes or climate change predictions. For climate change, trace gas emissions from wetlands are of great interest. The authors provide an overview of state-of-the-art on soil ecology of wetlands. The book is divided in the following main chapters: "Wetlands as habitats for soil organisms", "Soil ecological processes in fens and floodplains", "Carbon and nitrogen dynamics in soils with different water regimes" and "Trace gas emissions".

A Mind at Work.......2002-09-15
By way of background, although Fr. Jaki is a conservative Catholic theologian and has, for example, written books defending the papacy, he is no "fundamentalist." While he rejects Darwinism, he also rejects any attempt to find "concordance" between Genesis and natural science. He also considers Genesis 1 to be post-exilic and the product of multiple authors, which will hardly endear him to conservative Protestants, who might otherwise sympathize with much of his work.
This work is an enjoyable discussion of Prof. Jaki's career and the circumstances that surrounded the writing of his numerous books. It's enjoyable to read about the trials and travails of someone attempting to get his books into print, the reception of these works, and the effort that it takes to produce them. Some of the stories are quite amusing, such as the reception that Prof. Jaki has received from Moslems and Creationists (I think he is somewhat unfair to the latter.)
The big problem with this book is that Prof. Jaki obviously isn't happy that his work hasn't received the attention that it deserves. Unfortunately, he treats the readers to (at times) gratuitous speculations about why this is the case. I'm sure we would all like to "settle scores" but this detracts from this otherwise enjoyable work.

Mind Over Matter: Reflections on Buddhism in the West (Reflections on Buddhism in the)
Tarthang Tulku Manufacturer: Dharma Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0898003229 |
Book Description
Reviewing the differences between traditional and Western views of Dharma study and practice, Tarthang Tulku emphasizes the importance of embodying the teachings, balancing intellectual and meditative inquiry, and developing a view that transcends the limited range of the self. Drawing upon his thirty yeaars of experience with Western students he presents Dharma work as a path to understanding the deeper meaning of Dharma.Customer Reviews:
A book that deserves a wide audience.......2002-05-28
Tarthang Tulku is aware of these risks, and he's not afraid to point them out. He explores in great depth what Westerners will have to do if they want to get into the heart of the Buddha's teachings. Meditation, he writes, is important, but it has to be balanced with study. And then, of course, there's the matter of putting the teachings into practice.
There are a lot of books on Buddhism out there now, but I don't know of any others that offer such an honest look at how Americans are dealing with the Dharma (the Buddha's teachings). Unlike most Tibetan lamas, Tarthang Tulku has lived in this country for many years, and he is insightful about how our minds operate. Reading the book, you have the feeling he is sharing lessons he has learned through his own experience with his students and with the wider community drawn to Buddhism.
The author clearly appreciates the good intentions of many Westerners drawn to the Dharma, but at the same time he wants to spare them some of the detours and pitfalls they are likely to encounter. He pulls no punches in describing how serious Dharma students can get lost in the thickets of academic study, or in the facile assumption that Buddhism is just an Eastern version of therapy.
Along the way, Tarthang Tulku offers a profound discussion of the teachings on shunyata ("emptiness"), one of the most challenging and easily misunderstood concepts in Buddhism. He also offers some modest, level-headed remarks on topics Westerners have trouble with, such as reincarnation and karma.
This is not a how-to-manual for students of Buddhism. But it is an immensely practical and thought-provoking book. I hope it gains a wide audience, because the issues it raises need to be addressed. I know I'll be rereading it for a long time to come.

Mind Matters: Teaching for Thinking (Heinemann/Cassell Language & Literacy)
Dan Kirby , and Carol Kuykendall Manufacturer: Boynton/Cook ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0867092769 |
Book Description
Mind Matters seeks to help teachers sort through a burgeoning body of research into, and speculation about, the workings of the mind and apply these insights in the thinking and learning that goes on, or should go on, in their classrooms.
Based on the premise that real problems-to-be-pondered rather than information-to-be-stored bring growth in thinking potential, the book urges teachers to nurture their own minds as well as those of their students. Believing it a contradiction in terms to suggest that canned, artificial lessons develop thinking, the authors offer instead an abundance of illustrations and models of curriculum practices that compel thinking. The attempt is to go beyond all the trendy "thinking-skills" rhetoric to make critical and creative thinking an everyday reality in classrooms.
A unique feature of the book is that teachers are invited to try out a variety of thinking behaviors that seem closest to the kinds of academic inquiry that schools expect students to deal with. Teachers think of themselves as thinkers, but they don't often put themselves in the student's position as learner rather than knower. The invitations offered here encourage teachers to explore a variety of ways of thinking and learning that they can introduce into their classrooms.
Mind Matters is directed primarily to teachers, both preservice and inservice. It has strong potential as a textbook or supplementary source in university methods courses, both beginning and advanced. It will also appeal to administrators and curriculum developers.

Book Description
Edith Wharton emerges in this book as a novelist of morals (rather than manners). Behind her polished portraits of upper-class New York life is a thoughtful, questioning spirit. This book analyzes Wharton's religion and philosophy in short stories and seven major novels. It considers Wharton in terms of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century American intellectual and religious life. It also analyzes Wharton in terms of her gender and class, explaining how this aristocratic woman applies and yet transforms both the classical and Christian traditions that she inherits.

A Child's Christmas in Chicago
Thomas P. Glynn Manufacturer: Writers Club Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0595650430 |
Book Description
Christmas in Chicago back in the forties and fifties was different. The weather was different, the people jarred from their usual concerns, and the things that happened strange, delightful, and often wacky. There was no stigma attached to being poor, to working with your hands, or to being out of work. We were all in this, whatever this was, together.
