Twining and Miers examines the basic intellectual skills law students need, in particular those concerning the handling of rules. Designed to cater for the needs of a variety of groups, including 'pre-law', first year LLB students reading courses in legal method, and those studying jurisprudence options with an interpretation/legal reasoning basis, it has wide appeal and provides a general overview of the subject. The new edition brings the reader up to date with changes in the law and involves more emphasis on the EU and legislation, with new examples and exercises.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as the book that referenced it.......2007-04-11

I really enjoyed a different book on introduction to legal reasoning and writing, which referenced this cleverly titled book in a couple footnotes. How to Do Things with Rules is quite focused on English law, and I found it kind of verbose reading without too much I could really use week to week. The subtitle could be "how to expand any example from 2 pages to 10" !!

            Book Description

Wetlands are very sensitive ecosystems, functioning as habitat for many organisms. Protection and regeneration of wetlands are of great importance in ecological research and in nature conservation. A great amount of research has been done on the hydrology, plants and animals in wetlands. Knowledge on soil organisms and soil ecological processes of wetlands is still lacking. This knowledge is highly needed for landscape planning purposes or climate change predictions. For climate change, trace gas emissions from wetlands are of great interest. The authors provide an overview of state-of-the-art on soil ecology of wetlands. The book is divided in the following main chapters: "Wetlands as habitats for soil organisms", "Soil ecological processes in fens and floodplains", "Carbon and nitrogen dynamics in soils with different water regimes" and "Trace gas emissions".

              Description:
Saxifraga hirculus is a postglacial relict in Central Europe, whose populations suffered a dramatic decrease in the 19th and 20th centuries. However, few researchers have been interested in its ecological requirements in Central Europe. This article synthesizes previous knowledge supplemented by original data from the last large population (Switzerland). S. hirculus is a weak competitor which needs precise ecological conditions. It grows on bryophyte carpets in neutral to slightly acid wetlands, with stable water table close to the soil surface (optimum between 8 and 14cm) but does not stand long flooding. However, it requires a good oxygen supply, with roots 2-3cm under the soil surface, generally not reached by water, with running, cold water through loose, fibric peat. Its optimal conditions are in spring fens, but it grows in other types of wetlands as well. However, overgrowing by shrubs, sedges or Sphagnum in natural successions may threaten the species with extinction, as did drainage and peat extraction previously. Now, its survival in Central Europe depends on an adequate management of the ecosystems. Moderate grazing (cattle or sheep) or mowing help to limit competition with taller Carex species. Reintroduction of disappeared populations or creation of new ones from cultivation in botanical garden is possible, but appropriate sites are rare. In some cases, substrate management could improve the conditions in somewhat inadequate situations. This management in four directions can be flexibly applied in different situations to progress to optimal conditions for the conservation of this valuable species.

                  4 out of 5 stars A Mind at Work.......2002-09-15

Stanley L. Jaki is one of the most important writers on the relationship between religion and science. Prof. Jaki has written over 40 books. His work concerns the philosophy of science, the relationship between science and theology, theology proper, the history of astronomy and physics, and some other issues as well. Perhaps because of his writing style - which is at times polemical and at other times obscure - he doesn't receive the attention he deserves.

By way of background, although Fr. Jaki is a conservative Catholic theologian and has, for example, written books defending the papacy, he is no "fundamentalist." While he rejects Darwinism, he also rejects any attempt to find "concordance" between Genesis and natural science. He also considers Genesis 1 to be post-exilic and the product of multiple authors, which will hardly endear him to conservative Protestants, who might otherwise sympathize with much of his work.

This work is an enjoyable discussion of Prof. Jaki's career and the circumstances that surrounded the writing of his numerous books. It's enjoyable to read about the trials and travails of someone attempting to get his books into print, the reception of these works, and the effort that it takes to produce them. Some of the stories are quite amusing, such as the reception that Prof. Jaki has received from Moslems and Creationists (I think he is somewhat unfair to the latter.)

The big problem with this book is that Prof. Jaki obviously isn't happy that his work hasn't received the attention that it deserves. Unfortunately, he treats the readers to (at times) gratuitous speculations about why this is the case. I'm sure we would all like to "settle scores" but this detracts from this otherwise enjoyable work.

                    Book Description

Reviewing the differences between traditional and Western views of Dharma study and practice, Tarthang Tulku emphasizes the importance of embodying the teachings, balancing intellectual and meditative inquiry, and developing a view that transcends the limited range of the self. Drawing upon his thirty yeaars of experience with Western students he presents Dharma work as a path to understanding the deeper meaning of Dharma.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    5 out of 5 stars A book that deserves a wide audience.......2002-05-28

Many people like to think that since the Buddha's teachings are universal, they can fit right in to this culture. But that seems naive. America is the great melting pot, but is "melted Buddhism" really what we want?

Tarthang Tulku is aware of these risks, and he's not afraid to point them out. He explores in great depth what Westerners will have to do if they want to get into the heart of the Buddha's teachings. Meditation, he writes, is important, but it has to be balanced with study. And then, of course, there's the matter of putting the teachings into practice.

There are a lot of books on Buddhism out there now, but I don't know of any others that offer such an honest look at how Americans are dealing with the Dharma (the Buddha's teachings). Unlike most Tibetan lamas, Tarthang Tulku has lived in this country for many years, and he is insightful about how our minds operate. Reading the book, you have the feeling he is sharing lessons he has learned through his own experience with his students and with the wider community drawn to Buddhism.

The author clearly appreciates the good intentions of many Westerners drawn to the Dharma, but at the same time he wants to spare them some of the detours and pitfalls they are likely to encounter. He pulls no punches in describing how serious Dharma students can get lost in the thickets of academic study, or in the facile assumption that Buddhism is just an Eastern version of therapy.

Along the way, Tarthang Tulku offers a profound discussion of the teachings on shunyata ("emptiness"), one of the most challenging and easily misunderstood concepts in Buddhism. He also offers some modest, level-headed remarks on topics Westerners have trouble with, such as reincarnation and karma.

This is not a how-to-manual for students of Buddhism. But it is an immensely practical and thought-provoking book. I hope it gains a wide audience, because the issues it raises need to be addressed. I know I'll be rereading it for a long time to come.

5 out of 5 stars Ponderings and evaluations on the way of the Buddha.......2002-05-12

Mind Over Matter: Reflections On Buddhism In The West by Buddhist monk Tarthang Tulku focuses upon Tibetan Buddhism in the world today, both inside and outside the borders of Tibet. Mind Over Matter addresses the question of how the Dharma can benefit our lives today, the purpose and meaning of Dharma, its transforming wisdom, and much more in this thoughtful, carefully worded selection of ponderings and evaluations on the way of the Buddha. An intriguing perspective on Tibetan Buddhism in the modern-day world, which is greatly changed from the world of the Buddha himself, Mind Over Matter is a welcome contribution the growing body of Buddhist literature and enthusiastically recommended reading for all students of Buddhist philosophy and practices.

                      Book Description

Mind Matters seeks to help teachers sort through a burgeoning body of research into, and speculation about, the workings of the mind and apply these insights in the thinking and learning that goes on, or should go on, in their classrooms.

Based on the premise that real problems-to-be-pondered rather than information-to-be-stored bring growth in thinking potential, the book urges teachers to nurture their own minds as well as those of their students. Believing it a contradiction in terms to suggest that canned, artificial lessons develop thinking, the authors offer instead an abundance of illustrations and models of curriculum practices that compel thinking. The attempt is to go beyond all the trendy "thinking-skills" rhetoric to make critical and creative thinking an everyday reality in classrooms.

A unique feature of the book is that teachers are invited to try out a variety of thinking behaviors that seem closest to the kinds of academic inquiry that schools expect students to deal with. Teachers think of themselves as thinkers, but they don't often put themselves in the student's position as learner rather than knower. The invitations offered here encourage teachers to explore a variety of ways of thinking and learning that they can introduce into their classrooms.

Mind Matters is directed primarily to teachers, both preservice and inservice. It has strong potential as a textbook or supplementary source in university methods courses, both beginning and advanced. It will also appeal to administrators and curriculum developers.

This is only secondarily a book about particle physics. It offers only a little handwaving on the physics, much the way Glashow many have explained what he was doing to his mother.
It is about the people and politics of being a particle physicist.
One of the most interesting chapters is an extremely detailed account of what it was like to win a Nobel prize. He even shows you the menus of the various banquets.

                      5 out of 5 stars A delightful, fun, must-read for inquisitive minds........1998-09-12

Dr. Glashow presents in a logical progression the seminal ideas of twentieth century physics. He spices up this tantalizing but often dry material with a saucy seasoning of his personal life history, showing that Einstein was not the only scientist who did his best thinking in cafes and sailboats. The resulting story details the life of a modern crusader, less decadent than Petronius's Satyricon, less fanciful than Voltaire's Candide, but a heck of a lot more fun than learning these ideas by getting your own PhD in physics at Harvard.

                            Book Description

Edith Wharton emerges in this book as a novelist of morals (rather than manners). Behind her polished portraits of upper-class New York life is a thoughtful, questioning spirit. This book analyzes Wharton's religion and philosophy in short stories and seven major novels. It considers Wharton in terms of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century American intellectual and religious life. It also analyzes Wharton in terms of her gender and class, explaining how this aristocratic woman applies and yet transforms both the classical and Christian traditions that she inherits.

"The path of paradox is the path of truth," said Oscar Wilde, and as this lively and fascinating book reveals, nowhere is this maxim more appropriate than in the field of physics. Against all the dictates of the very lifeblood of science, the means by which a theory can be proved; without them science would wither and die.

Etienne Klien is that rarity, a scientist who is equally at home in the world of literature and philosophy. Writing for those with no more than a general knowledge of scientific concepts he draws analogies from the ancient Greeks to the fables of La Fontaine, from Baudelaire to George Bernard Shaw, as he explores the nature of paradox and its ability to cast light on an apparently insuperable problem in the world of physics.

Scietists and non scientists alike will delight in his analyses of seven major paradoxes: the problem of wave-particle duality, the paradox of the twins in special relativity, the paradox of the dark night in cosmology, the paradox of Schrodinger's cat in quantum physics, the famous EPR paradox which Einstein set against the current interpretations of quantum mechanics, the violation of parity in particle physics and the paradox of the irreversibility of time. His fresh approach and avoidance of mathematical formulae not only present these problems in an entirely new way, but enable any reader to understand and enjoy them.

The discoveries of science are vital to our knowledge and understnding of the cosmos and the role we play in it. Through this stimulating book all readers will learn to look with new eyes at concepts they may have thought beyond their ability to grasp.

Christmas in Chicago back in the forties and fifties was different. The weather was different, the people jarred from their usual concerns, and the things that happened strange, delightful, and often wacky.

There was no stigma attached to being poor, to working with your hands, or to being out of work. We were all in this, whatever this was, together.
