5 out of 5 stars Extremley great book.......2002-04-26

This is a great book! It is a fast book for middle school kids and a slow book for elementary kids. It is interesting, well written, well illustrated, and covers a good amount of material. I would recommend this to anybody but it is especially great for homeschoolers

5 out of 5 stars Gets to the source of many discoveries about our world!!!.......1999-04-08

As a homeschooling parent, I am very pleased with this book and the vast amount of information it contains about our world. Most interesting is the authors approach. Not only does he talk about the various discoveries of the past centuries, but he also takes you back to the person and the circumstances that provided the opportunity for the discovery to be made. My children and I have all been made educationally richer thanks to this work.

I will purchase the other books (there are to be three of them total) as soon as I am able to locate them. The quality of information is excellent and I expect the other books to meet the quality and depth as this one has done. I heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in knowing the "who, when, and how" various discoveries were made.

          Book Description

THE CHANGING EARTH, a leader in the Introductory Geology course, is the only text specifically written for the combined physical and historical geology course. The Fourth Edition's content is based on the best-selling texts PHYSICAL GEOLOGY: EXPLORING THE EARTH and HISTORICAL GEOLOGY: EVOLUTION OF EARTH AND LIFE THROUGH TIME, both written by James Monroe and Reed Wicander. Briefer than the previous edition and maintaining a consistent and clear writing style throughout, the text provides a balanced coverage of physical and historical geology with engaging, real-life examples that draw students into the material. Examples in the Fourth Edition include new two-page art spreads, new paleogeographic maps, and "Geology in Unexpected Places"-a favorite feature from PHYSICAL GEOLOGY: EXPLORING THE EARTH, Fifth Edition. Known for its competitive and robust ancillary package, the Fourth Edition now features GeologyNow, the first assessment-centered student tutorial technology developed for the Geology market. The seamless integration of GeologyNow with chapter concepts emphasizes the connections between the content and students' own lives, through visual 3-D animations and chapter quizzes, helping students develop a greater appreciation for geology.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the novice geologist.......2006-08-04

I'm definitely no expert in geology, but I've always wanted to learn the basic concepts and understand the terminology. I found this book to be an excellent introductory book. It is much more than a grade-school primer, but not as deep as a college textbook. In short, it's ideal for the interested amateur who want to understand the subject without having their eyes glaze over. It is well organized, starting by describing the different types of landforms, then on to historical geology, minerals, rocks, and fossils, and finally a practical section on how to do geology as an amateur. I learned such things as the difference between basalt and gabbro, how to measure strike and dip, and what an anticline is. This is probably not a book that you would sit down and read start to finish, but it is written in easy-to-understand text. (Compare that to something like John McPhee's Annals of the Former World, a book guaranteed to mystify anyone who doesn't have a Ph.D. in geology.) I agree that the photos of rocks and minerals need work, but part of the problem is that in my copy, they are printed too dark. Color might help, but the colors in the field never seem to match those in a photo, so what you really need are samples you can touch and feel. The only real complaint I have is that the layout of the book is atrocious. The choice of font and line spacing makes it appear to have been done by an amateur desktop publisher. I would have expected better from a quality publisher like John Wiley.

          5 out of 5 stars a good broad generalization.......2001-01-30

the previous reviewer's 3-star rating because of the lack of color photographs doesn't do this book justice. Cvancara provides a strong, broad overview of geology for the amateur or hiker who's interested in knowing a bit about the nature, origin, and contents of the land around them.

The book covers types and varieties of rock, fossils & landforms as well as geologic time and how it changes & reforms land. I foudn the best part to be an interesting ~50 page section on "how to do geology", covering such interesting topics as how to analyze a landscape to determine its origins, reading topographic and geologic maps, how to track the source of a stone, how to find & pan for gold, and how to build a rock, mineral, or fossil collection. With the attached appendices of geologic resources I find it a great way for myself as an amateur to enjoy knowing what it is I'm admiring on hikes & such.

          3 out of 5 stars needs color!.......2000-01-05

Considering a majority of geology is recognizing colors, this book (with only black and white photos) is hard to use as a reference manual. The reading is also a bit stuffy, but does cover a wide range of geologic topics.

                              Description:
Molecular imprinting is a novel technique used for chiral separation, artificial antibodies, sensors, and assays. Typically, molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) are monoliths with irregular shapes. However, microspherical shapes with more uniform size can be obtained by the method of precipitation polymerization, which offers a higher active surface area by manipulating its compositions. In this study, MIP particles for the target molecule, morphine, were synthesized using a precipitation polymerization method that is more facile than the previous one that produced a thermally polymerized bulk. The conducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), was utilized to immobilize the MIP particles onto the indium tin oxide (ITO) glass as a MIP/PEDOT-modified electrode. The sensitivity for the MIP/PEDOT-modified electrode with MIP particles was 41.63@mA/cm^2mM, which is more sensitive than that with non-MIP particles or that of a single PEDOT film with no incorporated particles in detecting morphine ranging from 0.1 to 2mM. The detection limit was 0.3mM (S/N=3). In addition, we presented that the modified electrode can discriminate codeine that plays an interfering species.

                                Description:
This study incorporates morphine into a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) for the amperometric detection of morphine. The polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), PEDOT, is an electroactive film that catalyzes morphine oxidation and lowers the oxidization potential on an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. The MIP-PEDOT modified electrode is prepared by electropolymerizing PEDOT onto an ITO electrode in a 0.1M LiClO"4 solution with template addition (morphine). After template molecule extraction, the oxidizing current of the MIP-PEDOT modified electrode is measured in a 0.1M KCl solution (pH=5.3) at 0.75V (versus Ag/AgCl/sat'd KCl) with the morphine concentration varying in the 0.1-5mM range. A linear range, displaying the relationship between steady-state currents and morphine concentrations, from 0.1 to 1mM, is obtained. The proposed amperometric sensor could be used for morphine detection with a sensitivity of 91.86@mA/cm^2 per mM. A detection limit of 0.2mM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 is achieved. Moreover, the proposed method can discriminate between morphine and its analogs, such as codeine.

                                  Description:
A key issue in the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) is the identification and optimisation of the main factors that affect the material structure and its molecular recognition properties. This paper describes the application of an experimental design and multivariate analysis method for the synthesis of bisphenol A (BPA)-selective MIPs. Six factors with a large impact on the MIP synthesis and its analytical performance have been optimised: the amount of template, the type and the percentage of functional and cross-linking monomers, the polymerisation method (i.e. thermal or UV initiation) and the porogenic solvent. The polymers have been prepared in small-scale (mini-MIPs) and, after careful removal of the template, their BPA rebinding capacity has been evaluated and related to the MIP composition. Among the two functional monomers tested, namely 4-vinylpyridine (4-vpy) and methacrylic acid (MAA), the former rendered the best selectivity for BPA analysis. The partial least squares (PLS) models revealed that the photoinitiated polymers with a 1:1 ratio of 4-vinylpyridine to cross-linker (EDMA or TRIM) yield the highest specific binding. Such procedure is time and cost effective and can be used as a general tool in the preparation of MIPs for different analytes.

                                    Description:
In our experience the efficient design of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIPs) for novel templates has proved difficult. Following commonly used imprinting protocols, MIPs designed against one template show both a lack of capacity and poor specificity for rebinding either the template or structurally similar analytes. Optimisation methods that involve changing one factor at a time can be laborious. A novel approach for the optimisation of MIPs using chemometrics is described. Sulfonamides, common drug residues in foodstuffs, were used as the model analytes with a methacrylic acid/ethylene glycol dimethacrylate MIP. To avoid the inaccuracies in measurement caused by template bleed a multi-analyte competition rebind assay was developed to select suitable sulfonamides to be used as the template for the MIP, and for the rebind analyte in the chemometric optimisation study. The rebinding efficiencies were monitored by HPLC. The template sulfonamide was selected as sulfamethazine (SMZ), and the rebind analyte as sulfadimethoxine (SDIM). The template:monomer:cross-linker (T:M:X) ratio of the SMZ block MIP was then optimised using a three-level full factorial design to predict a MIP with the highest rebind capacity. On synthesis this was 38.8% for SDIM in a solid phase extraction (SPE) application agreeing with the predication. The factorial design was further utilised to predict an optimum T:M:X ratio for the production of a class specific MIP, capable of binding a range of sulfonamides simultaneously. The predicted optimum T:M:X ratios of (1:10:55) and (1:10:10) were found to be different to commonly used ratios from the MIP literature.

An on-line supported liquid membrane-piezoelectric detection based on molecularly imprinted polymer (SLM-PZ-MIP) manifold was developed and applied to the quantitative determination of caffeine in coffee and tea samples. The proposed assembly provides all the advantages of an on-line system as regards automation, in addition to good selectivity, acceptable sensitivity and precision. The slurry sample was directly placed in SLM unit located in the loop of an injection valve, and the caffeine released from the sample passed through the membrane (n-undecane/hexyl ether) into an acidic acceptor stream. The caffeine is quantified by using a quartz crystal modified with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). The method shows a linear range between 10 and 1000ngml^-^1, with a relative standard deviation of +/-5% (at 50ngml^-^1). Satisfactory results were found by analysing real coffee and tea samples.

                                        Description:
A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) obtained by precipitation polymerization with methacrylic acid as functional monomer and propazine as template was tested as a sorbent for the solid phase extraction of chloro- and methylthio-triazines and some of their dealkylated and hydroxylated metabolites. In order to confirm the interaction between the functional monomer and the template, ^1H NMR (CD"2Cl"2) analyses were made. It was observed that the hydrogen and/or nitrogen of the amino group of the propazine were involved in the formation of hydrogen bonds with the functional monomer. The possibilities offered by the propazine-MIP for the extraction of triazine and derivatives were studied in organic and aqueous media and different types of behaviour were observed. From organic medium, selective extractions of chloro- and methylthio-triazines were obtained after optimization of the extraction process, with recoveries higher than 75% in both cases. However, the hydroxylated metabolites were not retained on the propazine-MIP in organic medium. In aqueous medium, the chloro-triazines and the dealkylated chloro-metabolites were retained on the propazine-MIP by specific interactions, the recoveries obtained being a function of their polarity. Regarding the hydroxylated metabolites, these are retained on the propazine-MIP through non-specific hydrogen-bridge interactions. The methylthio-triazines undergo poor molecular recognition in this medium.

                                          Book Description

Currently, a first generation of dedicated satellite missions for the precise mapping of the Earth’s gravity field is in orbit (CHAMP, GRACE, and soon GOCE). The gravity data from these satellite missions provide us with very new information on the dynamics of planet Earth. In particular, on the mass distribution in the Earth’s interior, the entire water cycle (ocean circulation, ice mass balance, continental water masses, and atmosphere), and on changes in the mass distribution.

The results are fascinating, but still rough with respect to spatial and temporal resolution. Technical progress in satellite-to-satellite tracking and in gravity gradiometry will allow more detailed results in the future. In this special issue, Earth scientists develop visions of future applications based on follow-on high-precision satellite gravimetry missions.

                                            Book Description

Carbon filament, vapor grown carbon fibers and carbon nanotubes have been discovered to have remarkable properties, opening they way for their use in intriguing and novel applications in electronics, chemistry and materials science. There are many similarities between nanotubes and filaments, leading many researchers to critically compare the two materials, their production, and potential applications. The two materials are compared and contrasted in depth in the present book, which is a comprehensive review of current research activity, growth mechanisms, physical properties, industrial production, and applications. The structures are discussed using a unified approach, which helps to compare growth mechanisms, contrasting morphological differences, and detailing how novel properties depend on such differences.

The book itself I would rate three stars, but this edition only gets one star. This is an amateuristic edition in which all French accents are scrambled. Espièglerie becomes espiglerie and pied-à-terre becomes pied-terre. The printer should look for an other job, like taxi driver.
                                            Don't buy this book.

                                            3 out of 5 stars Wodehouse's worst book.......2006-09-08

Wodehouse's books are usually very funny. They're full of clever wordplay, convoluted plots, and and lovable characters. Not George Washington doesn't have any of that. I only laughed once while reading the thing, and that was in the next-to-last chapter. The wordplay is not even remotely clever, in fact it's almost non-existent. The plot is slightly convoluted, but nowhere up to the usual Wodehouse standards. Quite frankly, I almost hated the main character, James Cloyster, because he's boring and a scoundrel. Trying to marry one woman when you're engaged to another is not the sort of behavior one expects from a Wodehousian hero.

This really isn't a good book at all. At best it's painfully mediocre. I can only recommend it to Wodehouse enthusiasts who want to collect copies of all of his works. Everyone else should steer clear. I can only give "Not George Washington" 3 stars, and that's being generous.
