Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
Mining the Sky : Untold Riches from the Asteroids, Comets, and Planets
by John S. Lewis takes a balance looked at the possibilities and/or necessities of space exploration and exploitation for economic reasons.
There are a lot of resources out there, and finite resources here, and he looks at both private and public involvement in the activity.
Now I see how it can be done.......2007-07-28
A short way into this book, I went to the back of the book to see if the author is a journalist or a real scientist. That's because it was so well written. He's a scientist alright. And, it wasn't long before I encountered the dense exposition I expected.
So, there's a dusting of light reading, especially the scifi scenes that serve as introductions to each chapter. The craftsmanship of those would make a professional scifi writer envious.
Then there's the info-packed core of each chapter. My chemistry and astrophysics is practically non-existant and I couldn't keep up, but I got the gist of it. I still appreciated the effort to explain things. Other authors would skip the explanation and merely state the conclusion. That would leave me wondering how trustworthy that statement was.
In the end, I felt I had a good overview of how the future might take shape.
I should warn you of that, at the start of the book, the author presents a version of 15th century Chinese explorations (he doesn't mention the name 'Zheng He') that is a little shakey historically. But blaming "the court eunuchs" makes too good a metaphor to let that get in the way. However, for a couple chapters at the end of the book he turns preachy -- essentially labelling dissenters from expansion into space as "court eunuchs", then disassociating himself from the political left and right by sloppily redefining their positions. I guess he couldn't trust us to make our own way thru political thickets. Fortunately, the just-the-facts bulk of the book make up for these few tantrums.
Amazing and important book, even 10 years later.......2007-01-10
This is a wonderful book. The author lays out, very plainly, how the vast resources of the solar system will enable a prosperous future for 10 quadrillion people within half a millenium, and at the same time save the Earth from the economic and ecological dangers it now faces.
Parts of the book are a bit dated now, including the "new afterword by the author" which was written in 1997 (only a year after the book was first published). I'd love to see a new edition that takes into account the developments (or lack thereof) of the last ten years. But the vast majority of the book still applies just fine. I highly recommend this book to anyone with any concern about humanity's future.
This needs to be required reading in schools.......2007-01-02
Mining the sky is an encouraging answer to those who worry about overpopulation, global warming, and environmental degradation. It challenges us to expand our limited perspective and seek solutions to the worlds problems in unconventional places. Lewis very logically and reasonably explores the potential wealth of our solar system, and lays out a very feasable framework to follow in order to utilize the seeminly unlimmited resources in our backyard.
Makes One Think.......2006-01-01
Mining the Sky is an excellent book for any person who has had any association with earthly mineral extraction and the potential for utilization of space-based resources on the Moon, Mars, and Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs). While the book is nearly a decade old, the primary message remains poignant and relevant even more so in the 21st Century. It is my hope that the author will do a second edition in the near future. With recent robotic missions to the Moon, Mars, asteroids and comets having taken place since the book was first published, I am certain that there is even much more to now be said about the economics of space-based mineral commerce.

[Quantitative X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis: Theory and Application].......2000-11-01
Very good. The book goes directly to the issue of what X-ray fluorescence is and its applications. Most books in the field explain lot of techniques and do not treat fluorescence properly. Just to remind, it is one of the most used X-ray techniques in the industry. It was about the time for someone to write a book only about fluorescence.

Description:
An X-ray fluorescence (XRF) method for the rapid and non-destructive analysis of 30 non-organic elements in plant leaves over five orders of magnitude concentration from several percentage of dry weight to sub-milligram per kilogram, is described. There is a growing need for a simple method of monitoring non-organic trace elements in plant material, especially those which accumulate in soils with application of fertilisers, both inorganic and biosolids. Earlier attempts to use XRF for the analysis of plant material suffered from sensitivity loss due to the high background of organic matrices caused by scattering of the X-ray source. We overcome this by using polarised X-ray sources in a Cartesian geometrical arrangement with sample and energy dispersive detector (EDPXRF), a configuration which can achieve an order of magnitude reduction in background compared with unpolarised sources. Further sensitivity gains are made using a high power tube as a source of primary X-rays and for some analytes employing secondary targets for near-monochromatic excitation. Sample preparation is simple involving only pulverising and briquetting of dried samples. Accuracy is evaluated by comparing data obtained for the suite of NIST plant leaf samples (NIST 1515 apple leaves, NIST 1547 peach leaves, NIST 1570a spinach leaves, NIST 1573a tomato leaves and NIST 1575a pine needles) and tobacco leaf standards CTA-OTL-1 and CTA-VTL-2. The data compare well over the whole concentration range and the method provides a rapid analytical tool for monitoring potentially toxic trace elements in all types of foliage with adequate sensitivity for many purposes.

Description:
We propose a new mid-level data-fusion system to process, as a unique signal, the Raman and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectra obtained from the first micro-Raman-XRF instrument. The system is based on the main advantage of the wavelet transform, which is multiresolution. First, each spectrum set is split into blocks according to their frequency. The blocks which contains background and noise signals are removed and variable selection is performed on the remaining blocks to extract those variables with the most power of classification. These variables are concatenated and form a Raman-XRF meta-signal ensemble. Finally, dual-domain signal ensembles from references and samples are classified using partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Our results show that this system is suitable for rapidly and automatically classifying ancient pigments using the complementary information provided by both techniques. Classification with different levels of difficulty can be handled and no prior knowledge of the sample composition is required. This system has been applied to real spectra of ancient pigments and can also be applied to combinations of other spectral signals.

Description:
A method for determination of Mg, Ti and Cl in Ziegler-Natta (ZN) catalysts by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF) spectrometry was developed. For comparative reasons, Ti was determined by spectrophotometry, Mg by complexometry and Cl by argentometric titration. Direct pressing was shown to be unsuitable for sample preparation due to catalyst decomposition. For Ti and Mg measurements, catalyst samples were calcinated at 1000^oC and pressed at 275MPa. Their determination by the fundamental parameters based on the Ti Ka line measurement was shown to be equivalent to those results obtained by univariate calibration or by the classical methods. Cl was determined by aqueous extraction, followed by deposition on a support. Chloride loss was observed. Fixation of Cl as AgCl on polytetrafluoroethylene (FHLC) millipore membrane afforded the best results. Nevertheless, measurements by WDXRF were shown to be inferior to those obtained by argentometric titration.

Description:
The present work reports the development of a methodology for the direct determination of lead in high saline waters derived from petroleum exploration employing electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry with permanent Ir-W and HF as modifiers. These waters, so-called produced waters, have complex composition containing several types of organic and inorganic substances. In order to attain best conditions (highest analytical signal besides lowest background) for the methodology studies about the effect of several variables and the convenient calibration strategy were performed. Also, the efficiency of other modification approaches was evaluated. At best conditions, pyrolysis and atomization temperature were 800 and 2200^oC, respectively, when the modifiers cited above were utilized. Obtained results indicate that, in this kind of sample, lead can be determined by standard addition method or employing external calibration with standard solutions prepared in 0.8moll^-^1 NaCl medium. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the procedure, a recovery test was performed with six spiked samples of produced waters. The detection limit, quantification limit and the relative standard deviation in 0.8moll^-^1 NaCl were also calculated and the values are 1.5@mgl^-^1, 5.0@mgl^-^1 and 5.0% (at 10@mgl^-^1 level), respectively.

Description:
In the present work, scandium was determined in sediment slurry samples (from three different rivers) by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS). Slurries were prepared by weighting 100mg of dry sediment samples (@?53@mm particle sizes) and adding 6ml of HCl:HNO"3:HF (3:1:2, v/v). Accurate results were only possible due to the synergetic effect between Rh as permanent chemical modifier and acetylacetone (Acac) as complexing agent. The same platform was used for 400 heating cycles. The performance of the chemical modification was evaluated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence (SRXRF) and some figures of merit (precision and detectability). The best analytical conditions were attained using 1500 and 2550^oC as pyrolysis and atomization temperatures. The scandium content in the liquid phase of the slurries ranged from 61 to 73%, thus indicating, in this study, that both liquid and solid phases play an important role in slurry analyses. An amount of 5.0-20.0@mgl^-^1 Sc linear range as well as LOD and LOQ of 0.19 and 0.62@mgl^-^1, respectively, were obtained under these conditions. The accuracy was checked by using microwave-assisted decomposition, and the results compared to those obtained with the proposed methodology (slurry analysis). By checking both sets of the results, there is no statistical difference at the 95% confidence levels.

Tracing gold back to its source by means of the elemental composition of objects contributes to the knowledge of the trade routes used in the past. The analysis of a large number of ancient gold objects showed that in most cases only a few elements are useful to characterize the metal. Quantitative analysis of these elements was performed on a set of gold samples with different techniques: inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in liquid mode and with laser ablation, 12 MeV proton activation analysis, fast neutron activation analysis, particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and PIXE induced X-ray fluorescence. The aim of this paper is to present a discussion on the possibilities and limitations of these techniques to characterize gold.

Description:
Bauxite exploration involves routine analysis of a large number of samples for a wide range of elements. In Nigeria, though geological field exploration for bauxite started almost three decades ago very little has been achieved, mainly due to the non-availability of facilities for evaluating the dozens of suspected bauxite deposits scattered around the country. In this regard, a procedure for the rapid, accurate and precise measurement of a number of important elements in bauxite has been developed based on the newly acquired radioisotope based EDXRF spectrometer. Elements and oxides analyzed are Al"2O"3, SiO"2, TiO"2, Fe"2O"3, K"2O, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Ga, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb and Pb. The richest bauxite sample has concentrations of 48.08, 18.90, 1.26, 7.71 and 1.93wt% for Al"2O"3, SiO"2, TiO"2, Fe"2O"3, and K"2O, respectively. The other values in ppm are Mn (302), Co (532), Cu (45), Zn (51), Ga (41), Rb (32), Sr (222), Y (32), Zr (849), Nb (89) and Pb (72). The measurement errors in terms of accuracy and precision are less than 5% and 10% and 5% and 15% for major and trace elements, respectively. Statistical correlation analysis carried out on the results shows the most significant relationships to be the negative correlations of alumina with silica, iron oxide and titanium. This is believed to be related to the processes of formation of bauxite, with the Si and Fe-Ti being removed as Al was being enriched.

Book Description
Connie O'Toole enjoys part-time amateur sleuthingand the neighborhood's worst kept secret is that he has help. You see, Connie happens to be a cartoonist who regularly confers with his cartoon characters: Waldo (a fat and pompous walrus) and the Chicken (a frightfully nervous hen who roosts on Waldo's head). It's usually an amicable relationship&mdsah;although Connie's wife Evelyn might disagree. Still, nobody can solve a neighborhood mystery quite like Waldo!
But things change suddenly when Connie, Evelyn, and Waldo Chicken try to find the neighborhood's reigning monarch (a cat named Mr. Woo) and instead stumble onto the remains of someone they thought had left the neighborhood long agothe sultry Becky Sawyer.
What started as an inestigation to find the regal Mr. Woo suddenly becomes a full-fledged murder mystery, a mystery thatimpossiblyinvolves Waldo Chicken!
Customer Reviews:
Laugh yourself to death.......2005-02-16
A skull has been found. Someone has obviously been murdered. So why are you giggling, chortling and guffawing out loud while drawing disapproving glances from others in the room?
Welcome to the the wacky world of Waldo and the Chicken, and their creator, cartoonist Constable "Connie" O'Toole. In the first of a planned series, fellow WindRiver author Alan Goldsmith lays down the foundation for years of slapstick sleuthing while practically inventing a whole new genre: The laugh-your-a**-off murder mystery.
"Waldo Chicken Wakes the Dead" begins innocently enough. It's no big secret in his Georgia suburb that Connie O'Toole speaks to, argues with and is often humiliated by his own creations, the officious Waldo Walrus and the nervous hen nesting on his head known only as The Chicken. Folks regularly ask Connie to help them recover lost items and pets, a task he accomplishes by conferring with his cantankerous creations. On a day like any other, a neighborhood kid asks him to find Mr. Woo, a male lion in his prime disguised as a house cat, the terror of any four-legged mammal smaller than a Clydesdale and easily capable of having an eagle or two for lunch. Connie accepts the challenge and with the help of his wife Evelyn, they locate the wayward feline and stumble upon evidence of foul play.
Normally, this is where things turn grim, dark and depressing, but not when Connie O'Toole is around. Instead, a memorable cast of characters begin to make their entrances, adding even more quirkiness and hilarity to what should be a grave situation. Yes, someone is dead, but while you're trying to figure it out, Goldsmith bombards your funnybone with a nonstop barrage of one-liners, asides and daffy dialog. Hardly a page will go by without at least a grin and at best, laughter to the verge of tears.
If you want to spare yourself the embarrassment of laughing in public while trying to solve a murder mystery, use the old schooldays trick of hiding "Waldo Chicken Wakes the Dead" inside a decoy book, say, Debbie Farmer's equally hilarious "Don't Put Lipstick On The Cat!" or even my own "Collinsfort Village," also available from WindRiver Publishing.
Waldo Chicken review.......2004-12-11
We can only hope that Connie O'Toole and Waldo Chicken will return for more neighborhood sleuthing and chicanery.
Mr. Goldsmith has woven a humorous tale of intrigue and mystery involving an almost endless cast of colorful characters. The many twists and turns were highlighted by a surprise ending.
As a member of the "slightly older than baby boomer" generation, I appreciated the references to characters of my era. Most of the humor in this book, however, is timeless and well-conceived.
Not since Francis The Talking Mule and Harvey The Rabbit have I enjoyed a tale of real and imaginary character to this extent.
Thank goodness Connie and Waldo Chicken survived unscathed to collaborate again.
