If you're looking for a quick, easy, and fun guide to constantly cultivating from within your organization the talent to move up and fill positions left behind by others, don't look here. Written by a human resources expert who teaches at Penn State, Effective Succession Planning must surely be one of the driest books ever written on this topic, from its aggressively unsexy title and jacket to its college-textbook format and arsenal of supplementary checklists, flowcharts, and exercises.
Having said that, it's also probably one of the most thorough books on the topic (and a fine complement to The Leadership Pipeline), incorporating methodical and meticulous guidelines to preparing for and quickly filling crucial vacancies at all levels of the organization, from top management to sales, administrative, technical, and production positions. Not only does it lay out a plan for instituting a long-term succession planning program that includes everything from early action steps to ongoing evaluation and revision, it also shows how to develop, monitor, and evaluate talent and skills in individual employees in order to promote effectively from within (although it acknowledges that sometimes the best choices come from outside, and offers key steps for optimizing the outside-search process as well).
Everything is covered here, from the legal implications of hiring and firing and online and high-tech resources to major trends that will affect succession planning in the years ahead. And, thank god, the author has incorporated some case studies--both fictional/composite and those of several large real-life companies--to add some names and faces to a volume that's about as dry as the Sahara, and (for human-resource professionals, at least) potentially as welcome as a fresh supply of water if you happened to be stuck in such a place. --Timothy Murphy

The most comprehensive and authoritative book on the subject, Effective Succession Planning has helped countless companies develop strong succession programs and avoid major disruptions.
Thoroughly revised to reflect the latest trends and best practices, the book presents strategies for identifying competencies, clarifying values, assessing current and future needs, and creating a complete, systematic succession planning program. The third edition also features all-new material reflecting the author's surveys on:
* whole system transformation
* software support packages
* tapping retirees to manage succession crises
* the growing activism of boards in succession planning
* and more
The book includes a new diagnostic tool to assess specific succession needs, illuminating case studies, and a CD-ROM with worksheets, assessment tools, and training guides.
Customer Reviews:
Exceeded my expectations.......2007-09-28
Rothwell's book is one of the more comprehensive and well researched books covering this growing topic. It includes a wealth of information following all of the major steps of the Succession Planning process. The book contains useful worksheets and task process flows that allow a reader to rapidly introduce the core concepts into their organisation. A great resource.
excellent reference.......2007-06-20
easy to understand and absorb great intro reference
Like a lot of other things---it's only as good as you apply it.......2007-05-12
The need for succession planning is reaching crisis proportions, yet few organizations are willing to face the crisis and do something about it.
There's nothing magic here---just a realistic, comprehensvie, flexible approach to get the job done. The strenghts in this book:
- Finding the right devleopmental activity for the right level of management
- Design, gain support, and implement, and maintain your succession process.
- Lots of extras, including assessments and a plan to devleop a mentoring program.
A great value.
Extremely Helpful.......2005-08-29
Rothwell provides not only an excellent review of the current literature but countless worksheets for practice. If you are interested in succession planning issues this book is a must. I would also recommend "The Leadership Pipeline" by Charan, Drotter, & Noel. And buy a copy of "Strategic Organizational Learning" by Beitler. Beitler has several free articles on his website "[...]" that are also helpful.

Very good book,plus..........2003-06-19
This is a very good book. In addition to this, I would strongly recommend "Strategic Organizational Change" by Beitler. The two books make a powerful combination.

What is the meaning of Stonehenge? Why was the elaborate Incan city of Cuzco built? What is the significance of the Great Pyramid at the ancient Mayan city of Chichén Itz´? These ancient structures have spellbound natives and tourists alike. This mysterious architecture points to a centuries-old search for celestial order. Anthony Aveni, a professor of astronomy and anthropology, takes us on a stimulating virtual tour of these legendary constructions. He describes how they were built and straightforwardly and often humorously critiques diverse theories attempting to explain their origin and function. For example, Aveni breathes life into the mysteries of the Great Pyramid and its use as a sacred temple, sacrificial altar, and celestial calendar. Wonderfully written, the book's primary focus is the prominent role of astrology in the design and construction of ancient structures, and even entire cities.
Book Description
"Tony Aveni has written a marvelous book about how the celestial rhythms influenced the cultures of the past. . . . It makes fascinating reading for any layperson."âScience Books and Films
"Clearly, if we can know more about these people, their religion, their culture, their hopes and dreams, according to Dr. Aveni, it will make our understanding of their astronomy more meaningful."âPlanetarian
"A thoughtful analysis . . . highly recommended."âLibrary Journal
What was the meaning of Stonehenge? What was the Mayan Code? Why was the elaborate Incan city of Cuzco built? Groundbreaking archaeoastronomer Anthony Aveni offers a host of startling new insights and conclusions in this acclaimed study of three of life's most mesmerizing mysteries.
Customer Reviews:
a bit disappointing.......2001-12-25
I found this book with high hopes since I'm very interested in both astronomy and ancient civilizations, but this book's writing is just not strong enough to tie everything together. It reads like a textbook in many parts with unclear explanations to all but the scientifically adept. I wanted to know more about each of these societies and cultures (Incans, Mayans, Babylonians, etc...) but this book only scratches the surface. Despite the interesting topic and neat cover, I found the book disappointing for its lack of clear information, the necessary background and the often obtuse writing.
A new look at the stars.......1999-04-27
One of my earliest memories is of lying on my back in the snow, just looking up at the stars. I've long since lost the ability to look at stars through the eyes of a child, but Anthony Aveni's book, Stairways to the Stars, has given me a whole new way of looking at them. For ancient cultures, the night sky was an ever-present companion. They used it as both calendar and augur, to track and predict the seasons, foretell the future, and understand the present. But the night sky we see is strongly dependent on where we live. The stars and stellar events (such as eclipses) that we see change, depending on where we see them from.
In a society based on the sky, how much of the sky you can see (and what's in it) becomes critical. So what the Mayans chose to focus on will be different from what the Celts considered important. And that may have had far-reaching effects on their society. From charts of the planet Mars in ancient Mayan codexes to the role of Stonehenge as an observatory, watching the skies left lasting, tangible effects on societies.
It's an interesting, thoughtful book. I enjoyed it, even though it's not an overwhelmingly easy read. Certainly there are times when it feels like a textbook (and the section of exercises at the end certainly doesn't hurt that sense).
If you're a beginning stargazer, I'd suggest something a bit more straightforward. But if you've been looking up at the night sky for years ... or if you're interested in ancient societies, I think you'll probably find this book well worth your time. The Culture of Time and Space, 1880-1918: With a New Preface
ASIN: 0801860024 |
Book Description
Laundries were once ubiquitous in British and American cities -- products of the same historical process that created steel mills and railroads. Unlike the more familiar examples of industrialization, these cleanliness factories remained powerfully identified with domesticity. In Steam Laundries, Arwen Mohun explores broader issues of how gender has shaped how everyday work gets done, who does the work, and how the work is valued. The British-American comparison further reveals differences owing to culture, regulation, and social structure as well as the unexpected transatlantic character of this seemingly localized business.

Very sound arguments.......2007-09-24
Marvin Lubenow offers a riveting work that has proved to be sound, intellectual research in the field of paleoanthropology. His topics and evidence threatened to give the evolutionary community something to think about. Bones of Contention is a solid contribution to one's study of the ancient world.
Lubenow is a creationist and makes no qualms about it. However, he is also a lover of anthropology. He goes into the history of a number of fossils and how they come to be found. He traces the major evolutionary findings known to date and brings out a number of discrepancies that are little known to a layman in anthropology. Not only is there a small amount of fossil evidence for ancient periods, but also proves that many of the intepretations given to the fossils that have been found are questionable if not scrupulous. He examines the findings of some of the most reknown anthropologists such as Leakey, Dubois, Salenka, etc.
A great portion of the book catalogues the history of neandertals and the amount of debate that exists about who the neandertals really are. His understanding of the debate is very thorough and some of his conclusions are surprising. His information about the Sima de los Huesos cave in Spain provides shocking evidence and makes one wonder why so little is heard about it. The implications found in the Simas cave as well as others would change the way we look at Neandertal forever.
All in all this is an excellent work and I cannot sing enough praise for it. This is perhaps one of the best works on the apologetics of anthropology that I have yet to read. It is not easy to walk away from this book and shrug off the evidence listed in it because it is quite complete.
A Critique of Ink, Paper, and Unscientific Dogma.......2007-09-05
Many in our culture today believe that the theory of Evolution should never be questioned or criticized. For such people it is as though Darwinism is as certain as the fact that the earth goes round the sun. In fact, I too had this same attitude throughout my life as a young atheist. As one who was raised on a diet of evolutionary theory, I can understand such dogmatic mindsets. After all, I too was not only an evolutionist and atheist - but I was an evangelistic atheist who sought to "convert" poor Christians to the majority viewpoint. All of this is now a part of my past - before I became a Christian, and before I ever endeavored to examine the subject outside of the pale of our modern education system in which nothing is accepted as true unless it pays direct homage to that popular deity Evolution, and its revered prophet - Charles Darwin. It is because of this background of mine that I found Bones of Contention, by Marvin Lubenow, to be a challenging read. The challenge that I encountered had to do with the fact that references to Neanderthal man, Java man and Homo erectus (among others) conflicted harshly with the academic social-engineering of my youth - where alternative viewpoints are not allowed to be mentioned. The challenge that I had was to read this book while leaving my past programming behind - a process that is always necessary whenever one wishes to evaluate evidence by the value of its merit, rather than by the value of its legendary status within a society. In fact, this is one of the central values of Lubenow's work. He helps the reader to analyze the scientific data that is used in support of evolution, but without the bias of men like Dawkins who would have us to forgo any critical analysis of Darwinism simply because he said so.
This is why Bones of Contention is such a crucial work.
No matter what your background is, I would strongly recommend that you read this book. Lubenow gives a clear and rigorous presentation of the history of Evolution. From the days of Darwin to the present, Lubenow reveals the precarious evolution of the philosophy of Darwinism by revealing how "Any series of objects created by humans (or God) can be arranged in such a way as to make it look as if they had evolved when in fact they were created independently by an intelligent being." p. 21.
He also notes that popular opinions in our society are often governed by an undiscerning public that believes in the infallibility of contemporary scientists as though they were "paragons of objectivity who have no philosophical axes to grind." p. 18. Lubenow calls the reader to an open and honest evaluation of the empirical data that is often messaged and manipulated in order to facilitate the premise of evolution. As a result of his research, he has concluded the following:
"We have all seen pictures of the impressive sequence allegedly leading to modern humans - those small, primitive, stooped creatures gradually evolving into big, beautiful you and me. What is not generally known is that this sequence, impressive as it seems, is a very artificial and arbitrary arrangement because (1) some fossils are selectively excluded if they do not fit will into the evolutionary scheme; (2) some human fossils are arbitrarily downgraded to make them appear to be evolutionary ancestors when they are in fact true humans; and (3) some nonhuman fossils are upgraded to make them appear to be human ancestors." p. 21.
Lubenow is careful to point out that Darwinism is a subjective philosophy that is designed to reduce the universe (biotic and abiotic) to that which is the product of an unguided, naturalistic process (p. 191). Without empirical data, evolution stands as nothing more than an atheistic philosophy. Even Darwin comprehended the tenuous nature of his proposed theory. What he developed on ink and paper was a philosophy whose fate would rest in the hands of future scientists:
"Geological research, though it has added numerous species to existing and extinct genera, and has made the intervals between some few groups less wide than they otherwise would have been, yet has done scarcely anything in breaking down the distinction between species, by connecting them together by numerous, fine, intermediate varieties; and this not having been effected, is probably the gravest and most obvious of all the many objections which may be urged against my views." Darwin, The Origin of Species, Chapter 9, On the Imperfection of the Geological Record.
It is this crucial interval of research, from the days of Darwin to the present, that Lubenow reveals to the reader. Overall he shows that Darwin began with nothing more that ink, paper, and wistful hope; and to this day, his followers have advanced his legacy with nothing more than ink, paper, and unscientific dogma.
The Best Book on Human Fossils.......2007-05-24
This is an insightful and well-researched survey of the hominid fossils commonly used to sell evolution: Java Man, Lucy, Neandertal....they're all here. But this book deconstructs the way they've been presented to the public, and makes for an entertaining read in the process.
I especially enjoyed the details about who gets to see the fossils and the incredible amount of security involved in protecting them. The chapter on the Piltdown mystery is also intriguing. And the findings of the recent RATE project were eye-opening.
The analysis in this book is irrefutable and doesn't bode well for old-school Darwinists. I'm amazed at the amount of research the author must've put into this.
Have the shallow, glossy stories in Time or National Geographic that trumpet some new hominid discovery left you intellectually unfulfilled? Then you'd probably enjoy this book. That little voice in your head that balks at the artists' renditions and speculative declarations of the Darwinists is called Science. This book sheds a bright scientific light on the whole subject, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone who has any nagging questions about "ape-men."
My only complaint is that I wish there were more illustrations/ photographs.
captivating, informative, and reasonably objective.......2006-09-26
The book is easy to read but also full of detailed factual information. What sets it apart is a refreshing, objective tone. In a non-conspiratory way, it answers a question that had been long in the back of my mind of how so many obviously intelligent scientists could contribute to the web of misinformation produced by the evolutionary community without "having an agenda." The way it explains the practical social and scientific dynamics involved is probably the single most valuable contribution of Lubenov's book. This book really earned the 5 stars I assigned it.
