Pleasantly Surprised.......2007-04-11
This was required reading by my manager. I'm always skeptical in those situations, but it came highly recommended. And now that we've all read it and tried to implement the suggestions, I can say there has been a noticeable difference in the way each employee approaches work. People seem more motivated and excited about their jobs than before. I think every business could benefit from Coonradt's ideas which inspire and inject fun into the often-mundane job experiences.
Required reading for me, my boss and his boss...OK my entire company!.......2006-05-09
Chuck Coonradt's principles in this book are over 33 years old, they haven't changed, and are just as applicable today. This is just one point of credibility for The Game of Work and the training program to help workers, managers, and their companies significantly increase fun, productivity, reward, profits and reduce loss.
This book should be a must read and its companion program should be a required course at every university in the world.
After just a little research, I found hundreds of companies that have benefitted from this book and trainings by Mr. Coonradt's company, which is cleverly named, The Game of Work. He could write another book and just fill it with hundreds of pages of case studies and endorsements from thousands of workers and hundreds of managers, CEOs, VPs or "coaches."
These are folks at worldwide giants like Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola, Boeing and AT&T. They are workers and managers in your hometown and cities all over the country who started keeping score The Game of Work way and quickly found themselves much happier and excited to be at work winning.
Charles A. Coonradt is to the business world what Vince Lombardi, Phil Jackson, and John Wooden were and are to the sports world!
Not as funny as Dilbert because it's serious.......2005-01-03
Ten years ago, I worked for a company which was in the midst of a culture crisis. Part of this crisis was due to the owner's insistence on managing from afar and not allowing skilled managers to make decisions based on local needs. This crisis came to a head when the owner met the author of this book on a ski - lift.
The main premise of the author's "philosophy" is this: people play(read: work) harder during their time off than they do at their jobs. [I'm alright with this part.] The reason being, according to the author, is that nobody keeps score at work. This, of course, is patently ridiculous. Almost every company keeps score on their employees in some way and most of us enjoy 'sports' in our off-time that don't keep score.
The author was brought in to train us in his "method'. Keep in mind that we already had complex yearly reviews and most managers were selected after they had met certain criteria in personality tests. Some people may be intrigued by the author's writing but his personal style is boorish. He typically ate while he lectured and his constant reliance on record - breaking sports events as an example of what people at work should do every day not only alienated non - sports minded people but showed the second major weakness in his philosophy. Guys get paid millions of dollars for getting a hit 30% of the time - not grand slams every time they come up to bat. But that was the author's next premise - that we had to perform these types of record feats everyday. (This strategy is not restricted merely to the author, sadly, but seems to be a major strategy of most US companies.)
The author had a difficult time with me especially as most of my hobbies involve physical activities in which one does not keep score - surfing, hiking, gardening, etc. I actually argued the contrary to the author's philosophy - that people actually played harder than they worked precisely because no one was keeping score when they played, as I stated above. However, discussing this with the author was like the narrator of "This Is Spinal Tap" questioning the notion of 'this one goes to 11' with Nigel. The author just kept repeating his litany about needing to keep score.
We started measuring anything that could be measured - this was keeping score. Then, because they could be measured they had to be reduced. Things that were vital to the integrity of the product were cut back on in order 'to win'. The product (and product reputation)was damaged and some of the better people soon left the company. Eventually, we careened into other changes in company philosophy and left this "Game" behind. Sadly, none of these philosophies helped- but that is another matter.
This author's work is dreck. You would do better to read Scott Adams and do exactly the opposite of Catbert, Ratbert, and the Pointy - Haired Boss. Make it interesting, make it fun, treat people with respect and people will work hard. They may still work harder at play but that is probably human nature. After all, there are words for "work" and "play" - they are not one. Keeping score doesn't really play into it.
This book answered the question of what grabs you........1999-09-24
I have watched people, including myself, get deaply involved with some of the most insignificant or profound things. This book explained to me WHY this happens.
best business book i've read in the last 15 years........1999-07-03
Totally a fun read, so logical & practical I wonder where this has been all my business life. Work should be more fun, and the author unlocks the secrets that everyone needs to really enjoy their jobs. Great stories, examples strike home with any sports lover. Would love to see a followup helping to implement these concepts into a company. I've read it twice and plan to read it again. Very exciting stuff!!
Book Description
Though George W. Bush took office in January, the nation is still recovering from the prolonged and complex process by which he was elected. The Florida electoral controversy and the subsequent decisions by both the Florida courts and the U.S. Supreme Court left citizens and scholars alike divided over the role of the judiciary in the electoral arena. Now, after a few months of reflection, leading constitutional scholarsCass R. Sunstein, Richard A. Epstein, Pamela S. Karlan, Richard A. Posner, and John Yoo, among others—weigh in on the Supreme Court's actions, which remain sensible, legally legitimate, and pragmatically defensible to some and an egregious abuse of power to others. Representing the full spectrum of views and arguments, The Vote offers the most timely and considered guide to the ultimate consequences and significance of the Supreme Court's decision.
The contributors to this volume were highly visible in the national media while the controversy raged, and here they present fully fleshed-out arguments for the positions they promoted on the airwaves. Readers will find in The Vote equally impassioned defenses for and indictments of the Court's actions, and they will come to understand the practical and theoretical implications of the Court's ruling in the realms of both law and politics. No doubt a spate of books will appear on the 2000 presidential election, but none will claim as distinguished a roster of contributors better qualified to place these recent events in their appropriate historical, legal, and political contexts.

Disappointingly uneven, but worth it .......2007-08-30
In late November and early December of 2000, the American public got what started out as a promising lesson in civics and constitutional law. That is, until the outrageous decision in Bush v. Gore, which only a few serious scholars support. A couple of them contribute to this book and they are as unconvincing as ever. But then some, inluding the ubiquitous Richard Posner, are on record supporting other notoriously wrong decisions.
But you don't have to read the contributions of Epstein, Posner, or Yoo. The book is worth it for the Richard Pildes piece, "Democracy and Disorder"", a discussion of several Supreme Court decisions where the Court has made what I believe to be egregious and erroneous rulings that protect the existing two-party system from innovations that would arguably strengthen our democracy. Consistent dissenters from that line of cases are the two justices perhaps most likely to retire soon, Stevens and Ginzburg, who were the most vigorous of the dissenters in Bush v. Gore.
Why are these decisions erroneous and egregious? Well, for one thing, the Constitution does not even mention political parties. Pildes's point is that the Court seems afraid of democracy and any tendency toward disorder that may spring from such innovations as blanket primaries--primary elections systems that would allow voters to vote for candidates in either party. What he fails to develop is the point that these so-called "conservative" justices are mostly the very bloc that claims not to be making law, just interpreting the Constitution according to the intent of the framers.
Alas, another problem with Pildes's otherwise excellent essay/article is that it is plagued by academic jargon, including for example the use of the term "context" repeatedly where the word should be "circumstances", or "situation". This is tiresome and rises to the level of mannerism as the term is stretched to serve almost as a syntactical transition here and there and gratutiously employed to serve almost every purpose. For example, one of the footnotes suggest that the reader refer to another book "for greater context" on the legal questions.
Editor Sunstein also has his favorite vogue words, one of which seems to be "cabin" used as a verb to mean "confine" or "restrict". This too becomes tiresome.
The University of Chicago Law School is a very presitigious institution and the University itself is affiliated with a manual of style used by professional writers. So these stylistic errors, which are annoying in several of these articles, are unfortunate.
I concur with other reviewers that this book is for law students and lawyers, not the general public. That too is perhaps unfortunate in that the arguments and points could have been simplified and explained more clearly for a lay readership, leaving the abstruse legal matters to the footnotes. And speaking of the footnotes, and to end on a positive note, at least they are at the bottom of the page, not at the end of the book, though perhaps if the book had been aimed at a less specialized or lay reader, the notes would be less distracting at the end.

Book Description
A new interpretation of nearly 40 years of interstellar signals and the prophetic message they contain
• Contains extensive analysis of pulsar data, revealing new ideas about the origins and functions of pulsars
• Provides proof of an extraterrestrial communication network
• Includes information about the formation of crop circles and force-field-beaming technology
In 1967, astronomers began receiving and cataloging precisely timed radio pulses from extraterrestrial sources, which they called pulsars. These pulsars emit laserlike radio beams that penetrate through space much like searchlight beams. Paul LaViolette, who has been researching pulsars for over 25 years, shows that while these pulsars have long been assumed to be spinning stars, the true nature of these radio sources has been grossly misunderstood.
In Decoding the Message of the Pulsars, LaViolette shows that pulsars are distributed in the sky in a nonrandom fashion, often marking key galactic locations, and that their signals are of intelligent origin. Using extensive scientific data to corroborate his theory, he presents evidence of unusual geometric alignments among pulsars and intriguing pulse-period relationships. Equally compelling is the message LaViolette contends is being sent by these extraterrestrial beacons: a warning about a past galactic core explosion disaster that could recur in the near future.
Customer Reviews:
Pulsars might be a Message.......2007-06-07
I think LaViolette has a plausible claim when he mentions that Pulsars are the result of extraterrestrial intelligent. Being a fan of SETI and an amateur astronomer, I found the book very good. I also think we don't have the technology today to explain not even 1% of what is going on beyond the moon. I once read someone saying that we can't explain physical phenomenta of very small (quantum level) or very large objects, a galaxy for instance. That might be true. How do we validate that? Someday we'll have it. Thanks for your book Paul.
Intriguing and well-researched!.......2007-05-29
Contrary to the previous review of this book--the writer of which obviously never read the whole book or has ever opened his mind beyond what the mainstream tells him to think--this book is extremely well-researched and presents a very intriguing new hypothesis about intelligent life in our galaxy. Read this book (or any of Paul A. LaViolette's) if you're interested in science but want to know more than just what the intro textbooks tell you, i.e., what has been deemed "worthy" of being part of the mainstream science propaganda mill. Thinking outside the box is what all our great scientists of the past did--they fought the naysayers and are now considered great thinkers. It's a shame that mainstream science isn't allowing more outside-the-box thinkers into the fold. Think of all the great discoveries that are being laughed at as "toilet paper" (to quote the reviewer "GG"). In 100 years, hopefully the story will be different.
Ugh! .......2007-05-15
"In Decoding the Message of the Pulsars, LaViolette shows that pulsars are distributed in the sky in a nonrandom fashion, often marking key galactic locations, and that their signals are of intelligent origin."
What? Pulsars are well understood and they have nothing to do with "intelligent origin". Folks, go out and buy an Astronomy 101 book instead. Better yet, sign up for an intro Astronomy course at your local community college. I bought this out of curiosity and well, I now have extra toilet paper handy if I run out. However, this book does give me an idea... I think I'm going to write about how ghosts cause earthquakes... yeah... that's the ticket!

Outstanding Bio.......2005-09-16
This is a really first class biography, bringing the full weight of Charles Darwin's "torment" to light. As a devoutly religious man during the oppressively Christian Victorian era, it took uncommon fortitude and intellectual honesty for him to follow the paths down which his researches led him, all the way to the ultimate conclusions which today bear his name.
Much like H.W. Brands's biography of Benjamin Franklin, the authors here do an excellent job of bringing Darwin back to life, both the highs and the lows (including lots of personal tragedy) that shaped his monumental career. Heartbreak played as great a role in his life as discovery.
Compulsively readable without sacrificing detail, all of the major milestones of his life are covered in a personal perspective which gives exactly as much emphasis as events must have had at the time -- even ones which have since reached mythic proportions. This is, as Steven Jay Gould touts on the cover, "Unquestionably, the finest [biography] ever written about Darwin..."
Excellent biography.......2005-03-06
This is a thorough and well-written biography of Charles Darwin, with emphasis on the torment he suffered as his theory of evolution caused upheaval in the Church and in his own beliefs. Darwin suffered from a debilitating illness (gastro-intestinal in nature) almost his entire adult life. He was also a very emotional man--tears came easily to him. These are just a few of the things I found interesting about this biography. Where his theory might be questionable, however, is not discussed. Highly recommended.
ONE OF THE BETTER DARWIN BIOGRAPHIES.......2005-02-09
I just completed my second reading of this work. I do feel it is one of the better Darwin biographies. It certainly is not in the same league with Janet Browne's two volume work, but if you cannot get Browne, then this one will certainly do. This work is well researched and certainly presents us with a good look at not only Darwin the man, but of his science. I had to agree with another reviewer who made the observation that reading Charles Darwin's work is much easier after reading this work on his life and times. I also enjoyed the insightful look into the Victorian mind...it was an added bonus. Unfortunately, I have noticed that the anti-evolution folks go through these reviews bashing anything said positive about any of the Darwin Biographies. The study of the man, Darwin, is not necessarily an endorsement of his theory. On the other hand, Darwin and his contemporaries did change the way we look at our world and we do owe them a debt for that, and anyone that can produce such a profound work, indeed, needs to be studied. Any one who denies this simply has their head in the sand. Highly recommend this one. Good biography and good history. Well written!
Complete, Unbiased and Utterly Enjoyable Masterpiece.......2004-01-11
Darwin: the life of a tormented evolutionist, the title says it all. Desmond and Moore work around the idea of the tormented evolutionist as a central theme in this magnus opus of Darwins life. The reader is taken on a journey through Darwin as a young lad, collecting shells and minerals, to the debilitated, ailing old man who writes non-stop on many aspects of natural history from selection to a complete and still used encyclopedia on barnacles to orchids and earthworms. But this is not an essay merely about the life and accomplishments of Charles Darwin, it is a story about science and society in the 1800's England. Desmond and Moore create a scene of Darwin getting swept up in the events of Victorian England. They illustrate a man torn by his religious convictions and the interpretations of what all the evidence from his life's research points toward. I relished in getting to know other famous scientists such as Hooker, Wallace, Romanes, Spencer, Tyndall and Huxley, and many others from that time who were among Darwin's followers and critics (i.e. Owen, Agassiz, Duke of Argylle, Mivart, Wilberforce)
A highly enjoyable book for people from all backgrounds and an absolute must read for anyone not so much interested in the complete biography of Darwin's life, but for people interested in the history and philosophy of Victorian England's science.
Brilliant biography for a brilliant scientist.......2002-03-05
This is one hell of a riveting biography. I've often read biographies of really interesting people, but the writing is so turgid or lackluster, that I find myself wishing a better writer would tackle this story and do it right. Not so with this one, this is a phenomenal book.

Book Description
This volume presents the Proceedings of "New Development in Optics and Related Fields," held in Erice, Sicily, Italy, from the 6th to the 21st of June, 2005. This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Center for Scientific Culture.
The purpose of this Institute was to provide a comprehensive and coherent treatment of the new techniques and contemporary developments in optics and related fields. Several lectures of the course addressed directly the technologies required for the detection and identification of chemical and biological threats; other lectures considered the possible applications of new techniques and materials to the detection and identification of such threats.
Each lecturer developed a coherent section of the program starting at a somewhat fundamental level and ultimately reaching the frontier of knowledge in the field in a systematic and didactic fashion.

Book Description
Witz first became a burning issue for German intellectuals after 1671 when le Père Dominique Bonhours in his Entretiens d'Artiste et d'Eugène informed them that they didn't have any. According to Bonhours, it wasn't really the Germans' fault that they were a little dim, it is just that they live in a cold climate and tend to be fat. A feud between French bel esprit and German Intellekt erupted that has persisted ever since.
Scholarly investigations into the nature of the joke have traditionally been plagued by a bad conscience and invariably begin with an apology to the reader for taking time for such a frivolous subject. In breaking with this tradition, Hill places wit almost at the heart of the universe, tracing it from Genesis to the dawn of themodern age. Even if the reader is reluctant to grant Witz this metaphysical and world-historical status, it must at least be admitted that Witz cannot be dismissed as a just a joke.
Witz can serve either builders or destroyers, defenders of the faith or heretics, diplomats or oafs, male chauvinists or radical feminists. Witz shows its volatility in setting up cultural, class, and gender boundaries just to smash them. Hill argues that there is something about Witz that makes it quintessential to the plight of modern culture. He views Witz as an ahistorical subject developing over time and transcending the lifespans and intentions of the authors who have wirtten with or about it.
In Der Witz, for instance, Freud thougth he was describing the workings of a historical psychological process, but the material he works with betrays him. His examples twist, mock, and undermine the theories he makes about them. And though Fred wrote dismissively of it, there is a long history of Witztheorie from which his own sprang. It has a long history through which its meaning shifts many times. The very word Witz was fought over, sometimes sluggishly and between buffoons but often with a brilliance that gave it lustre.
