        Book Description

The Pleadings Game is a major contribution to artificial intelligence and legal theory. The book draws on jurisprudence and moral philosophy to develop a formal model of argumentation called the pleadings game. From a technical perspective, the work can be viewed as an extension of recent argumentation-based approaches to non-monotonic logic: (1) the game is dialogical rather than mono-logical; (2) the validity and priority of defeasible rules is subject to debate; and (3) resource limitations are acknowledged by rules for fairly dividing the burdens of representation and proof among the players.
Gordon's work evaluates important jurisprudential theories of argumentation and reasoning in the context of the U.S. commercial law on secured transactions.
Audience: It is not necessary to have a formal background in law to appreciate The Pleadings Game. It will be of equal interest to both the artificial intelligence community and legal theorists.

        Book Description

This is a text for an introductory astronomy course. One of the main goals is to provide a broad enough and deep enough background in astronomy so the student will be able to follow current developments in astronomy years after they complete the course. This book presumes that most of its readers are not science majors and that they probably have not had a college-level science or mathematics course. The book provides a complete description of current astronomical knowledge, neither at an extreme technical level nor at a level that fails to communicate the quantitative nature of physical science. Finally, the historical development of astronomy is emphasized to show that astronomy, like other sciences, advances through the efforts of many scientists, and to show how present ideas have been developed.

The book was in mint condition. I received it promptly. I am confused though as to the record of it's purchase date. I bought this book in early September and the notification I just received says I purchased it yesterday. Other than that, no complaints.

4 out of 5 stars Good read lost of water.......2005-07-11

Its a good read, clear definitions, emphasis on getting sence of things, and simple relationships (say lifetimes scales as inverse of mass squared) but rather poor problems if one intends to use as a textbook... a 100lvl classes only :)

          Book Description

Both the quest for natural knowledge and the aspiration to alchemical wisdom played crucial roles in the Scientific Revolution, as William R. Newman demonstrates in this fascinating book about George Starkey (1628-1665), America's first famous scientist. Beginning with Starkey's unusual education in colonial New England, Newman traces out his many interconnected careers—natural philosopher, alchemist, chemist, medical practitioner, economic projector, and creator of the fabulous adept, "Eirenaeus Philalethes." Newman reveals the profound impact Starkey had on the work of Isaac Newton, Robert Boyle, Samuel Hartlib, and other key thinkers in the realm of early modern science.

                Book Description

Spin-orbit coupling makes the spin degree of freedom respond to its orbital environment. In solids this yields such intriguing phenomena as a spin splitting of electron states in inversion-asymmetric systems even at zero magnetic field and a Zeeman splitting that is significantly enhanced in magnitude over that for free electrons. This book describes spin-orbit coupling effects in quasi-two-dimensional electron and hole systems. The first part provides a general introduction to the electronic structure of quasi-two-dimensional systems with a particular focus on group-theoretical methods. The main part of the monograph is devoted to spin-orbit coupling phenomena at zero and nonzero magnetic fields. Throughout the book, the main focus is on a thorough discussion of the physical ideas and a detailed interpretation of the results. Accurate numerical calculations are complemented by simple and transparent analytical models that capture the important physics.

                  Book Description

Today high magnetic fields play an increasingly important role in many scientific fields. Formerly their use was largely restricted to the measurement of physical phenomena and the characterization of materials. But more recently they have found application in many new areas such as materials processing, crystal growth, and even in chemistry and biology. This book gives a broad survey of some of the most exciting recent applications of high magnetic fields, with the emphasis on materials science. These include, among others, the study of conventional and high-Tc superconductors, semiconductors, low-dimensional organic conductors, conducting polymers and protein crystallization. Each chapter begins with a general introduction and goes on to present detailed experimental results together with their interpretation. Researchers and students alike will find this book an excellent introduction to, and overview of current applications of static high magnetic fields.

                        Book Description

This book deals with the design of pulsed, non-destructive coils for the generation of high magnetic fields. Its purpose is to provide the designer of a pulsed field facility, the curious student, and the scientist with a concise and comprehensive text describing every aspect of coil construction. Special emphasis is placed on first-order calculations, which allow estimations with pencil and paper and are important for an understanding of the basic design principles. These design formulas are then supplemented by numerical calculations and simulations.

                          Product Description

This three-volume book provides a comprehensive review of experiments in very strong magnetic fields that can only be generated with very special magnets. The first volume is entirely devoted to the technology of laboratory magnets: permanent, superconducting, high-power water-cooled and hybrid; pulsed magnets, both nondestructive and destructive (megagauss fields). Volumes 2 and 3 contain reviews of the different areas of research where strong magnetic fields are an essential research tool. These volumes deal primarily with solid-state physics; other research areas covered are biological systems, chemistry, atomic and molecular physics, nuclear resonance, plasma physics and astrophysics (including QED).

                            Book Description

The Dirac Equation is a modern presentation of the relativistic quantum mechanics of electrons intended to make new mathematical results accessible to a wider audience. It treats in some depth the relativistic invariance of a quantum theory, self-adjointness and spectral theory, qualitative features of relativistic bound and scattering states, and the external field problem in quantum electrodynamics, without neglecting the interpretational difficulties and limitations of the theory. A novel feature is the extensive use of supersymmetric quantum mechanics in the discussions of, e.g. the nonrelativistic limit, Fredholm and Witten indices, the relativistic Coulomb problem, particles with anomalous moments, behaviour in the presence of magnetic fields, and soliton theory. The book is aimed at scientists and graduate students interested in quantum mechanics who want to learn about the mathematical foundations, the physical interpretation and important applications of Dirac's electron theory.

                                  Book Description

For this trilogy of short novels--her first new book in six years--Ursule Molinaro drew upon a wealth of sources (including Balzac, Flaubert, and Hildegard of Bingen) to transform the grotesqueries of our time into timeless tales.

Angel on Fire presents Clara Corvo, who was born with three peculiarities--a cloven hoof, phenomenal intelligence, and clairvoyance. Her mother finds her unbearable, and to escape her family takes a young student as a lover. When six-year-old Clara matriculates at Harvard Law School, an almost classical conclusion is inevitable.

In twenty letters gathered for the pending canonization of Jacob Erskine Wooster, a picture emerges not of humility but of large contraditions in an ordinary man whose beatification is as strange as his life. Saint Boy is Diane Arbus in prose.

In April in Paris, Molinaro spins Southern gothic into French embroidery. An American woman out of her element wherever she happens to be.

5 out of 5 stars Our Marguerite Duras of American fiction strikes again.......2000-06-05

Molinaro is the beloved Marguerite Duras of American fiction and here she strikes again: with great clarity, diplomacy, wit, and poetic grace she cuts to the gendered plays of empire and libidinal politics of desire.

Molinaro's fiction, collection by collection, is all of a piece: cosmopolitan, dry, wry, learned, but cutting to the core of the Waikiki night bar or the multilingual streets of New York city and holocaustic mazes of Europe.

When Bob Dylan wrote his lyric about seeing Queen Jane, he must have been thinking of this blessed novelist of Jayne steet, this Ursule of the tarot cards and black nails, this goddess in the wilderness of postmodern American letters.

McPherson Press is to be applauded once again for its ongoing support of her singular work, as it was (all too belatedly) for its uncanny support of another bypassed US writer, Theresa Cha, now all but appropriated into the identity politics of Asian American banality-- but still a star for all ages and climes, as is Ursule Molinaro. Gratitude and praise are called for from the Pacific islands to Greenwich Village. We need to read her before it is too late,"the groom still waiting at the altar."

5 out of 5 stars Cautionary tales about everyday saints and believers........2000-03-03

Demons & Divas could also have appeared in our fiction section but deserves a place here for its powerful spiritual insights which draw on a wealth of sources from Hildegard of Bingen to Flaubert to provide stories of religious and social insights. A trilogy of short novels provides cautionary tales about everyday saints and believers, injected with a healthy dose of social angst.
