    Book Description

Business experts reveal why this book will grab your ATTENTION!

"The best thing about Ken Sacharin's book, aside from its reader-friendly format, is its ability to make advertising practitioners think in human terms about the consumer's basic response mechanisms. This provocative book belongs on the must-read list for all marketing directors, brand managers, agency 'creatives,' or account managers. I heartily recommend it."
—Ed Papazian, President, Media Dynamics, Inc.

"In today's increasingly crowded communications space, attention is undoubtedly the customer's most scarce resource. Ken Sacharin's practical and hands-on Attention Mechanics framework will help marketers break out of the noisy business environment and get their messages across to their target audiences."
—Russ Winer, Professor of Business, University of California, Berkeley

    5 out of 5 stars Excellant.......2006-01-23

It is one of the best in the Adweek series. It is a little dated, but it holds many eternal truths that you will not find in standard marketing books.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2005-08-05

Attention! is a good book. It's definitely not the best one in the Adweek series (Disruption, Beyond Disruption, Eating the big fish and Hey Whipple are better books). The only major problem with it is that it contains examples from dotcom companies (the book was obviously written before the dotcom crash)...I think it even says that a 56k net connection is extremely fast a couple of times...

Whitmore, William H. The Law of Adoption in the United States, and Especially in Massachusetts. Albany: Joel Munsell, 1876. vii, 111 pp. Reprint available 2003 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. LCCN 2002042757. ISBN 1-58477-344-8. Cloth $80. Reprint of first and only edition. In 1875 the Massachusetts legislature considered a proposal to revise the state's adoption laws. Before it proceeded, however, it commissioned this study from Whitmore to serve as a reference for the legislators. Written in two parts, the first contains the texts of laws and related cases from twenty-two states. (He also includes a brief summary of relevant European statutes.) Organized by topic, the second describes how these laws compare and differ. Though written for a specific purpose, this study remains a valuable guide for the scholar of the history of adoption law or family law to all aspects of American adoption law during the nineteenth century.

        Book Description

The Night Sky is a rotating star finder (planisphere) that allows the user to recognize the constellations for any time of night, any day of the year. The sky appears to rotate (due to the rotation and orbital motion of the earth), so to be successful recognizing the constellations a beginner needs to know which stars are above the horizon at any time.

This is the full-sized version of The Night Sky suitable for the 20°-30° latitude zone (Florida, Caribbean, S.Texas, Hawaii). We have versions for the following latitude zones: 50°-60°, 40°-50°, 30°-40°, 20°-30°, and the Southern Hemisphere. We also have pocket-sized versions available for the same latitude zones.

4 out of 5 stars Glad we bought it!.......2007-05-06

you don't need a magnifying glass to read it. i'm glad to have it. helpful. has a new feature i haven't seen before. looking north is on one side and looking south is on the flip side. it's a sky chart that is closest to our latitude.

        5 out of 5 stars I'm enjoying it a lot........2003-03-19

It is very detailed. As it says, it's very similar to the stars you actually see in the sky.

It works as follows: there is an outter dial with the days of the year, and an inner dial with the hours of day. By aligning them, it is easy to see the stars that are on the sky at any day (night) and hour.

One side faces North and the other side faces South. It has the star coordinate system (the one in hours and degrees), so you can find planets, if you have a table that tells you where to look.

I think you should complement this with a book, such as "40 Nights to Knowing the Sky", in order to know what you are seeing.

5 out of 5 stars Affordable, Convenient, Easy to use!.......1999-07-30

The first and best star chart for viewing the south sky with low distortion! I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Used it for years........1999-07-17

Having used planispheres for over 40 years, I was very interested when I first saw David Chandler's "The Night Sky". I found it to be the easiest to use, easiest to see and most accurate "sky dial" I had ever used. I can recommend this excellent planisphere to beginner, amateur and professional astronomers alike.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent tool for learning your way around the sky........1999-07-06

The Night Sky for this latitude was useful for me even though I don't live at these locations. In the late 1970's I needed to see how the sky looked from the southern US. This was useful as I was writing articles from their perspective. Since I couldn't travel southward, I used the Night Sky and saw how the sky would look from the southern US. I later learned the Night Sky is very accurate as I received positive responses from my articles.

        Book Description

Long ago in a kingdom far away, Spinifix, the king's alchemist, labored in the dank cellar of the castle to find the secret of turning base metals into gold. The king had promised to share the wealth with Spinifix if he could produce gold before the Millenium. As the Millenium approached, Spinifix became obsessed with his quest for gold. Meanwhile, his young apprentice tried to open Spinifix's eyes to the richness of their kingdom--fields of golden flowers, goldfish in the rivers, the burnished orange sun--to no avail. The young apprentice knows that true gold--and the happiness it brings--lies within one's heart. With illustrations lush with the intricate detail that has become his trademark, Colin Thompson's fans will delight in searching out the critters and graphic surprises hidden no the pages of this medieval fantasy tale.

5 out of 5 stars An exquisite book.......2006-09-12

This book stands the test of time, having been a continual favorite for me and my kids for several years now. It has been my daughter's favorite book since before she could read, and it remains her favorite despite the fact that she now reads and enjoys long chapter books. The illustrations hold endless depth and fascination -- in how many pictures can you find Cafe Max or the long-eared dog? The story is mystical, sincere and very sweet. I can't think of a better book for children or for adults to read with children.

5 out of 5 stars delightfully bizarre story!!.......2002-10-18

In a kingdom far, far away, in the deep and dark cellars and dungeons of a King's castle, alchemists have been toiling away for centuries to find the secret for turning metals (or anything else) into gold. For centuries, they've failed at this attempt, though in Mr. Thompson's book, "The Last Alchemist", we meet the pop-eyed, withered and completely stressed out Spinifex. Spinifex is the 19th alchemist for the kingdom, and the greedy king has given him until the end of the year to find, FINALLY, the secret for turning metals into gold.

Spinifex sets off on this quest with a passion, doing research in the vast (and completely bizarre) library, cooking up everything he possibly can think of to make gold, all the while bossing around his small apprentice, Arthur. For his own part, Arthur is far more interested in things like sunflowers than smelly potions, and as the story goes on, the reader gets the distinct impression that as Spinifex's experiments build and build up to a gigantic machine, something downright catastrophic is going to happen before the story is over!

The plot and text of "The Last Alchemist" is fun and easy to read, but what will REALLY hook readers are the illustrations. Brightly colored with many shades of almost fluorescent pink, blue, orange and red, the book is a veritable treat for the eyes. On each page fantastically odd things are happening that almost defy explanation. The castle's library, for example, is right out of M.C. Escher's world, with staircases going upside down, sideways, and off into impossible directions. Walking all over these stairs, reading books, hiding in crannies or peeking out of cracks are hooded figures, strange creatures and beady lil' eyes. Doors are on walls which are really floors for other stairs, and many of the books themselves are odd, winged creatures. Teeny little creatures crawl through and around Spinifex's laboratory equipment, bringing the wrinkled and gray Spinifex the strange ingredients for his experiments.

It's hard to think of a close equivalent in illustration style that really gives an accurate picture. The crowded pages of "Where's Waldo?" comes to mind, but Mr. Thompson's illustrations are far more bizarre than anything Waldo had seen. There's a slightly macabre feeling to these pictures, and if I was hard pressed I'd have to say it resembles the album cover of Elton John's 1975 "Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy". There's a certain Monty Python-esque feeling to the illustrations.

I personally LOVE this book, as do both of my children and the students I've shown this to at school. Some kids said that very young children might find it "really weird" because of all the little creatures crawling over the pages or the inanimate objects (books, flasks, lamps, etc) that have legs or eyes. Highly recommended for those interested in a visual tour-de-force!

This is the only one of Amy and Monte's divination kits that has anything even remotely challenging and even those cards, like the dreaded avalanche card, turn a negative into gold and it all falls into place. Grab this and enjoy it.

This is by far the best divination system I have ever used. I am delighted with it. I have bought extras for friends! This system is so on target it is like hearing from an old friend who knows you and your patterns all too well....and isn't afraid to tell you what direction they see you going in!

I have been astonished by the accuracy time and time again. I highly recommend it on it's own or in addition to what you are currently using.

5 out of 5 stars A tome that holds golden clues.......2003-07-02

A fascinating book, comprising a general introduction and overview, a collection of historically based stories of the lives and appearances of alchemists throughout western history that aims to demonstrate the existence of a knowledge outside of modern science's comprehension yet far older and more comprehensive, and concluding with an exploration of the alchemist's lengthy methods and reasons for transmuting base metals into gold.
Throughout the book, if one has any understanding of esoteric thought, it is possible to find the truth.

                          Book Description

This monograph addresses researchers and students. It is a modern presentation of time-dependent methods for studying problems of scattering theory in classical and quantum mechanics. Particular attention is paid to long-range potentials. For a large class of interactions the existence of the asymptotic velocity and the asymptotic completeness of the wave operators is shown. The book is self-contained and explains in detail concepts that deepen the understanding. A special feature is its emphasis to show the beautiful analogy between classical and quantum scattering theory.

                          Book Description

Tired of reading good books? Check out this ridiculous, politically incorrect, and remarkably pointless novel. It's a general cultural satire, in the guise of a "hard-boiled detective" mystery spoof.

The mystery has to do with the "Secrets of the Elder Gods": fans of the Lovecraftian "cosmic horror" corpus (which does lie in very ripe ground, after all), and everybody who enjoys irreverent humor, ought to read this one.

Take off your fedora, pour yourself a glass of rye, light up a smoke, and laugh along with Rastus Reilly as you develop esophagal lesions. You only live once, kid!

5 out of 5 stars Must Read For Laughs.......2002-11-24

I've just read this book a second time and am making a point of recommending it to my friends and to everybody reading here. This is a very crazy novel. In fact it's not so much a novel as a satire of novels. The author gets you interested in the story but there's some kind of gag on every page, so Kelly's book manages to mock every novel-writing convention, in the process of mocking itself. "The Maltese Falcon" is lampooned, as are H.P. Lovecraft's, and to a lesser extent Dickens's work specifically, but the humor ranges widely beyond just these targets. It's sharp but underlyingly good-natured humor. I'll never forget these patently ripe characters: a Sam Spade type, Jake Stalker, who seems to be coming out of the closet, Lucretia Faversham, elderly dowager, in search of rejuvenation while revelling in all the common vices, Veronica Volupturini, globe-trotting golddigger, Haggie the gin-swilling receptionist, Rastus Reilly himself, whose mere description is hilariously unforgettable, and a larger congregation of strangely loveable misfits Kelly describes bluntly as "lowlife swine." They're rather sweet swine, though, and that's part of what makes them funny. One character's impossibly long surname evokes conversational byplay that puts Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First" to shame: this alone would make the book worth its price, but the laughs keep coming, from every direction. Bizarre characterization is certainly a strong point. The setting is Boston, Massachusetts, and a treasure-hunting cruise from there to the Caribbean, in the 1930s. Pacing is leisurely at first but the story builds to an adventurous conclusion. The tone can best be described as ridiculous. The writing style parodies numerous styles, as suggested by the subtitle, and manages to do this not just effectively, but fluidly as well: Kelly is a genuinely talented writer. The plot is simply a framework for laughter. The good guys, led by old lady Faversham and her hired gun Jake Stalker, have found out there is an ancient Secret of Eternal Youth, and they're chasing after it, hotly pursued by a fat and skinny pair of archly evil bad guys. I said this was a very crazy book. So if you like Crazy you'll love it. I did, enough to read it all over again, six months after my first reading, and I picked up on jokes I'd missed the first time. A+ for humor.

5 out of 5 stars I think Douglas Adams has come back to life!.......2001-11-06

I was *beyond* pleasantly surprised by Rastus Reilly. Steve takes no prisoners when he parodies Laural and Hardy, Mark Twain, Stephen King, HP Lovecraft, and countless others. This book is funny from page one through the end, and I found myself wishing for more once it was finished! Of course, I drink a lot of beer, so what do I know?

I'll be watching for future releases from Steve Kelly, hope he lives for awhile and doesn't die of liver disorder.

                          5 out of 5 stars I Hope You're Nuts.......2001-10-30

I'm a fan of Stephen King and I had just started reading H.P. Lovecraft's classic horror stories when I came across this unusual novel and decided to give it a try. First I'm going to warn readers who don't like completely crazy humor that they will not like Kelly's book. I do like crazy nut humor so I loved "Rastus Reilly." It's well written it's insane and it's a hoot. Knowing a little Lovecraft will help you enjoy this horror and mystery satire. In some parts of the book Kelly satires the Lovecraft writing style very well and obviously with affection. But you don't really have to know Lovecraft. You do have to be a little crazy like me to enjoy a novel as plain silly as this one. I liked it enough to write my first Amazon review and give this book the top rating but only for nutty humor fans.

I have to say this book is one of the funniest things I have ever read. It's very naughty but in a nice way. It is also the most utterly absurd thing I have ever read. I think everybody who loves funny things has to read Rastus Reilly. I give this book five stars.
