        Book Description

The clear market leader in the corporate finance course, this text filled a very definite need for a MODERN corporate finance text back in 1983 when the first edition was published. It is known for its intuitive, conversational style and for being able to tie together many of the important ideas in corporate finance. The author's discussions and illustrations are unique due to the depth of detail blended with a distinct sense of humor. This new edition will continue to be authoritative and student friendly but will also carry stronger, modern coverage reflected by current examples and data as well as unique emphasis upon agency issues.

good basic financial principles... not much for interest, but does do a descent job of conveying and illustrating basic financial principles.

5 out of 5 stars A solid introduction to corporate finance.......2003-05-23

This Brealey and Myers's textbook, now in its 7th edition, introduces the student to the fascinating world of corporate finance. The first few chapters of the book demystify Net Present Value, the preferred method for calculating the value of an investment project. Brealey and Myers then explain how risk and return are related and introduce the Capital Asset Pricing Model. The CAPM's strengths and weaknesses are both explored in detail. The authors continue by analyzing the significance of dividend policy and debt policy for a corporation -- including the rather surprising result that in perfect markets these just don't matter! The next topic is options, financial and real; major pricing models are covered, and warrants and convertibles get a fair treatment, too. The remaining parts of the book deal with a variety of topics such as valuing debt, managing financial risks, financial planning as well as mergers and corporate governance.

At 1071 pages, Principles of Corporate Finance can hardly be called a short book. Introductory textbooks often suffer from a "too-much-too-little" syndrome, in that numerous topics are covered, but none too well. Brealey and Myers easily avoid this pitfall. Their writing is solid and manages to keep the reader's interest. Although available space puts a limit on what can be said, the book's coverage is quite comprehensive and well linked to the results of modern research. Moreover, all topics receive their fair share of treatment so you can actually understand the theories the book presents. It should be noted here that some mathematical background is probably necessary to make the book easy reading.

Each chapter contains many problems which can be used to facilitate the learning process. I found them very useful. The only complaint I have about the book (International Edition) is that the binding proved less than perfect, as after a while pages started separating from the main body of the work. But that is a problem I can live with.

All in all, an interesting, readable, authoritative introduction to corporate finance.

5 out of 5 stars CORPORATE FINANCE BIBLE ON WALL STREET.......2003-03-20

I have used this book three times now: as an undergraduate in financial economics, at the training program at an investment bank, and at the core finance course at my MBA. It is a very good resource and learning tool, going from the very basic ideas of discounting all the way to options pricing and more innovative finance.

This is the preferred learning tools of all finance professors I have met and the reference used by all finance professionals I met. It is very simple to follow the concepts of the book, especially if you purchase the study guide that is available with it.

The only major concern I have heard is that it does not deal with the more recent finance problems of off-balance sheet financing and other shenanigans. This is a book meant to teach basic financial theory, so those topics, in my opinion, are better treated elsewhere.

        2 out of 5 stars Book ..........2003-01-03

This books [is bad] primarily because it is called "Principles of Corporate Finance". This is NOT AN INTRO book to finance. An intro book would have spent more time going over basic concepts like balance sheets and income statement. Also the sample problems at times can be really hard to follow. I highly recommend using Fundamentals of Corporate Finance by Ross, Westerfield, and Jordan as a supplement to this if you have no finance background.

3 out of 5 stars Inappropriate for intro MBA finance but professors love it.......2002-08-30

The wide range of reactions to this textbook simply indicates the fact that it is NOT actually a good introductory text for the typically diverse MBA student mix found in any intro-level course. Yet that is PRECISELY the usage for which it is known: intro-level corporate finance classes in MBA programs. My MBA program also used B&M, but a group of us simultaneously volunteered for a focus group run by the publisher of Aswath Damodaran's excellent Corporate Finance textbook. We followed the Damodaran text alongside our B&M text for the entire semester. At semester's end EVERY SINGLE MBA IN THE FOCUS GROUP preferred Damodaran's text -- and the group contained electrical engineers with graduate degrees and former I-bank analysts as well as former ballet dancers and journalists. Damodaran is an award-winning finance professor at NYU. B&M is heavy on the academic scholarship, far removed from the real hurley-burley of Wall Street, and despite the humour (which I did enjoy) it cannot successfully meet the needs of a broad range of students. Yet it continues to be used for just that purpose -- indeed, my MBA alma mater ignored the student feedback and continues to use B&M, the professors' darling... If you are suffering with this text, do yourself a favour and get Damodaran's, which is a text designed to TEACH by a professor who truly cares that ALL his students master corporate finance.

            5 out of 5 stars A great help!.......2007-09-21

I was recently "downsized" and starting a job search for the first time in 22 years. Fortunately some one recommended this book to me. Beginning a job search can be confusing and overwhelming. This book has great advice for every step of the way.

Part of my company "goodbye package" was a few months of services with a career counseling firm. Many on the concepts from the firm are contained in this book. I have just recommended this book to a friend who is unhappy in her current job.

You've probably heard people talk about the importance of networking/using your network. ("It's all in who you know.") That is a central theme in this book, as it enlightens you on how to make use of the people you know -- friends, family, co-workers, friends of friends, etc. -- to find opportunities and land interviews.

            A book worth having.

change his/her job, pick up this enriching and engaging book to guide you through to a healthy
            job hunting experience.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Common Sense.......2007-07-09

Great book to use as a refresher, but I found it to be a compilation of stories and anecdotes that were mostly common sense.

5 out of 5 stars What color is your parachute review.......2007-07-08

This book is a helpful tool in career choice making. It is especially insightful for self evaluation during the career search. This book helps the seeker to become more organized and narrow the search to an area best adapted for the individual.

This book was a requirement for one of my master's level courses dealing with career development. We did the flower exercise and it was quite revealing. The work book which was designed to accompany this book deals precisely with this exercise. I would definitely recommend this book to those exiting high school, community college, trade school, or college at any level.

5 out of 5 stars What Color is Your Parachute.......2007-06-30

This is a funny, well-written book, but more importantly, he does an excellent job in helping the reader find the job that best suits their interests, passions and talents.

                Book Description

It's a beautiful, clear night and you decide to look up, once again, at the thousands and thousands of stars you have seen all your life. Each is anonymous in the vast sweep of the heavens. It's impossible to distinguish one bright star from another, one constellation from the next, without help.

Here it is. The product of 20 years face-to-face with the sky in all latitudes of this blue planet, The Great Atlas of the Stars was created to give the lay-person and amateur astronomer a map of the principal constellations and grand stars seen in the whole Northern Hemisphere. It covers the 30 most important constellations of the 88 visible from Earth.

These 30 constellations are the most rich and beautiful. Here you will find the most brilliant (and pretty) stars and remarkable nebulas and galaxies, that are the most interesting to observe. Each receives a full-page "identity card" which features the known characteristics: distance, luminosity, dimensions. For each of the constellations, 3 to 6 principal stars are shown in detail and located in a map of their sector of the sky.

Opposite the "identity card" page is a magnificent full color photograph of the constellation and its background of starry sky. Between the two is an overlay of clear mylar. Printed on the mylar overlay are the names of the elements of the constellation, and the connections between them.

Lastly, numerous photographs of staggeringly beautiful nebulae and starscapes, retrieved with the latest telescopes and space technology, put the individual constellations in the larger perspective of the night sky.

As authoritative as it is beautiful, The Great Atlas of the Stars will be consulted again and again by students, amateur astronomers, teachers and anyone who wants to know more about the stars.

This book captures the majesty of many of the heavens' greatest delights in beautiful astrophotography -- and shows you exactly where these objects are using a clever system of maps and transparent overlays. Keep it by your telescope at night to plot out your viewing, or on a cloudy night do your viewing right there on the page. Also great for casual readers/viewers who are simply curious about what's up there.

The transparencies are incredibly useful -- you see photos of the stars as they appear to your eye in the sky, with objects of interest circled and noted to guide you to closer views and detailed information. A smart, simple way to guide you through the night sky. I wish it covered even more objects, but it is reasonably comprehensive.

My only complaint (the reason I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars) is that the spiral-bound pages are not quite thick enough at the binding edge, so after a year or two of extensive use, especially on some dewy wet nights, some pages started pulling out. (I bought a second copy to remain pristine, and use the messy one by the scope.)

Strongly recommended for anyone interested in astronomy, regardless of whether you have access to a telescope. But beware: you'll want access soon!

4 out of 5 stars The Great Atlas of the Stars.......2005-10-03

This book is just wonderful. Love the overlays to help with the locating of the constellations. Thank you.

                5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-03-31

I have this book, and its heping me with my studies and night watching. This book, has a really amazing way to explain, to view and to make a sence for you while watching the heveans, espacially for the beginners!

4 out of 5 stars "Great Atlas" falls short of its name.......2004-02-06

One knock on modern star atlases is that they tend to be, well, a little dry. Old atlases have colorful constellation figures drawn in ornate detail, detail that gets in the way of seeing the actual stars. Aiming for the practical, atlases for professional use focused more and more on the stars--the ultimate case being an atlas by the German astronomer Friedrich Argelander. Argelander's work was a map of 324,000 stars, unrelieved with figures, constellation lines, names, numbers, or indeed anything at all except coordinate lines. It's hardly a gripping book.

Brunier and Fujii's book is an attempt to put more of the beauty of the night sky back into a map of the stars. This book really isn't a comprehensive atlas; think of it more as a Fodor's guide to the stars. Not all of the sky is covered--just the highlights.

Even those readers only faintly acquainted with the heavens will recognize some friends here: the Big Dipper, Orion. But this book doesn't merely show you the constellations. Akira Fujii's breathtaking wide-field astrophotos reveal dozens of celestial wonders in the neighborhood of each constellation. The brightest are pulled out for special mention in the accompanying text, written by Brunier. Acetate overlays are cleverly inserted between the photos, marked with white circles to indicate where the objects are.

Here's where the book gets a bit dicier. Quite a few of the circles aren't where they ought to be. The circles for M81 and M82, a dazzling pair of galaxies close to the Big Dipper, is a couple of degrees off from where it ought to be. (The circle itself is about a degree across.) Even worse is the circle for M3, a globular cluster containing hundreds of thousands of stars; not only is the circle about 5 degrees off, but M3 isn't even in the wide-field astrophoto at all.

Now, an ordinary copy editor isn't going to be able to catch this, and it won't matter much to the ordinary reader. But it shows a lack of attention to detail that just shouldn't be an issue for a book with such outstanding production values. (And they are outstanding.) This book deserves a second edition; let's hope that these mostly minor issues get resolved by then.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, useful, attractive, and even educational.......2003-11-17

I have a number of astronomy books and this one stands out as exceptional. Its a well annotated picture book that appeals to both adults and youngsters. It serves both a great eye-candy, but it's also a great reference. The striking large photos are very attractive (of course), but the presence of plasic overlays that allows you to see annotations is a great idea; you can see the raw scene but also see the actual vista. The descriptive text is also good and quite informative. This is the only astronomy book I leave out since it appeals to anybody.

I have purchased several biological coloring books in the past and use them all regularly in my 7th grade life science classroom. Adolescents still need color and they learn as they are doing it! This is just another fantastic resource for me to use with them. Now that our state standards have changed and include evolution in more detail, I am certain that this will be very valuable!

5 out of 5 stars GROG LIKE COLOR BOOK!!!.......2005-09-24

As a member of Homo erectus it was nice seeing pictures of the old family again, homo habilus, homo ergaster even dopey old australopithecus.

It reminded me of the times we would sit around the fire chewing on mastodon swapping lies about the hunt. Then afterwards we would take a walk down to the lake to get some fresh water and invariably one of us would get his throat ripped out by a large predator. I can still hear the screams like it was yesterday.

Anyway, I would suggest using charcoals and crushed flowers for pigment to add an air of authenticity to your colorings.

                    Enjoy!

Dr. Zihlman's new edition of the HECB is even more fantastic than the first! It is simply a fantastic resource for learning about human evolution. Any topic that you want to learn about or have questions about is covered.

Dr. Zihlman's book encorporates both textbook style writings and pages to color so that the reader can actually see what the text refers to. From personal experience, I have found the coloring book to be extremely helpful to those students, like myself, who learn better with visual application.

I, for one, would like to thank Dr. Zihlman or all of the effort she put into making the HECB one of the funnest, most thorough ways to learn about human and primate evolution!

Wow... this is a wonderful book for everyone! This is a great resource of Highschool and College students alike. If you a novice to the subject of anthropology, even better- this book will help you explore the world of anthropology in a clear and concise manner! From start to finish, this is a fabulous piece of work!

                        Book Description

For almost two decades Prof. Shifman, a clear and pedagogical expositor, has been giving review lectures on frontier topics in theoretical high energy physics. This two-volume book is a collection of some of the best of those lectures. The lectures written in the 1980's and early 1990's have been revised and updated specifically for this publication. The lectures in this book are intended for beginners - graduate students and young researchers - who are about to delve into the intricacies of the theory. They were used by the author in his course "Advanced Modern Field Theory and Its Applications", given in the academic year 1994/95 at the University of Minnesota.

A wide range of key topics is covered. In Volume 1, the first two chapters are devoted to quantum chromodynamics as the theory of hadrons. The author gives an in-depth discussion of a variety of powerful methods based on Wilson's operator product expansion. Chapter 3 (written together with V Novikov, A Vainshtein, and V Zakharov) is the most systematic and pedagogical presentation of instantons in the gauge theories one can find in the literature. Chapter 4 introduces supersymmetry. Chapter 5, concluding this volume, reviews the fascinating dynamics of supersymmetric gauge theories in the strong coupling regime. Chapter 6, which opens Volume 2, is a culmination of the supersymmetric theme. It gives a state-of-the-art description of the breakthrough developments in supersymmetric gauge theories. It has been written specifically for this book by A Vainshtein and the author. Chapter 7 is designed as a primer of two-dimensional conformal field theory, which constitutes the basis of modern string theory. Chapter 8, the last, presents remarkable new findings in quantum mechanics. Every chapter contains exercises and a list of recommended literature.

Prof. Shifman has been an active participant and significant contributor in the development of the ideas presented in this book. This accounts for the historical remarks and digressions interspersed in the book, enhancing its pedagogical role. The book will serve as a comprehensive reference and textbook for all graduate students and researchers interested in modern particle physics. It will also be a useful guide for lecturers.

                            Book Description

Farley Wilywitz is a liar—or so believed his friend Richard Faite. Farley phones Richard late one night and claims to have found a Picaso painting in his grandmother’s attic. Hard to believe, but events after that night seem to prove that Farley's telling the truth…a truth built on betrayal, lies and deception. Richard soon discovers that Farley has been using his identity on his Special Forces I.D. cards very interestingly, and that his best friend Donald Ackie, curator at the Institute of Art in Chicago, is involved in the theft of Farley's treasure.

The story takes an odd turn as Farley's "second" wife, Sweet Thang—having undergone Virtual Therapy—mistakes Richard for her husband and offers him her love. Torn between telling the truth and living a lie, Richard struggles to regain his identity while learning to forgive those who have deceived him. Punctuating Richard's turmoil is a misadventure in which Farley enlists him in a million dollar quest.

Spilling over with zany invention and peopled with colorful characters, Farley Wilywitz is a comic tour-de-force with powerful twists of fates.
