This book is about the methods used to value companies. Valuation methods such as the price-earnings ratio, dividend yeild and EVA are found frequently in stockbrokers' reports and in the financial press. There has also been an explosion of interest in 'shareholder value' in recent years, with a corresponding need to understand how value is created and measured.
Determining Value contains both the analytical review of valuation models and also evaluation of the data available for use in valuation models. This information is not at present available together in one textbook and has not been academically and critically evaluated.

I was very disappointed by the book. Not only is it full of cliches, but some of the advice is actually bad. Like buying a billboard to celebrate an employee's performance? In a professional services firm???
Some great material that I can share & use as a refresher.......2004-01-22
Gripe no. 1 : I hope its not going to become a common occurrence in business books, but there were 7 pages of 35 advance reviews (but 5 of them were only 2 lines which said little). Let me decide for myself if the book is any good - show me the product. Also, I work in IT, but there didn't seem to be a single reviewer with an IT background?
The book looks at the leader/manager/coach of a disparate group of professionals, assuming a mix of seniors & juniors.
I think the book isn't just for the leader/manager/coach - because in many such groups today, there can be rotation (time-based or task-based) where any of the group of professionals might be called upon to perform the leadership / coaching / mentoring role. So the book should be read by all members of the team. Also the leader is human - they might not be 'doing it right as per the book', and it could be useful for the others (they are all equals after all) to be informed to provide that guidance/correction.
The Sections are laid out well : getting ready; coaching the individual; coaching the team; building for the future.
It classes individuals into 4 styles : amiable, analytical, driver, expressive (I tend more towards the expressive), and how to work with each.
I also like the way it addressed underperforming members, how to correct the problem rather than try to rationalise it out of existence.
Because professionals jealously guard their autonomy, reserving the right to work as they see fit, professional groups have a greater-than-average tendency to become ill-disciplined - and thus a whole chapter is dedicate to how to run a meeting of such individuals.
I work in such a group, where there are 20 of us, probably 50:50 seniors & juniors (though we don't refer to ourselves in those terms).
Gripe no. 2 : However, one thing missing explicitly from the book is if there are any strengths, weaknesses, opportunities & threats from a geographically disparate or culturally diverse group?
My group is spread across 2 continents, 5 different timezones, with only 2 hours in the day when our extended workday (8am-6pm) coincides. We comprise at least 5 different nationalities & religions, and it seems many more political viewpoints. But time and time again, this material seemed to assume that this was a relatively homogeneous group, everyone was coming together physically in the same room, or at least, didn't even consider that people might be in the same geographical locations but be on the phone, and thus unable to see each others body language. My group only get together in the same room twice a year. We've evolved techniques over the 7 years we've been together to accommodate this, but I would have appreciated it more if this modern reality had been addressed?
I also liked the discussion on the maximum size of the group, and one correspondents rule of thumb that the group is too big if he can't tell you the name of everyone's spouse/significant other & what that person does for a living (assuming its OK culturally to ask for that information - in some cultures it's a no-no).
There's an excellent wrap-up where the dozens of checklist (don't let the apparent volume put you off - it's not that bad) are summarised and classified, and you are reminded in which chapters they are to be found.
Overall I think my group is doing quite well 80% of what is in the book, with maybe 10% that we wouldn't agree with, leaving us 10% that we could improve upon. I'm going to recommend it to everyone else.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2003-10-15
This book is essentially a collection of practical checklists interspersed with quotations and anecdotes. It certainly meets its objective of collecting everything you need to know about managing a professional service firm's practice group. Patrick McKenna and David H. Maister present the nuts and bolts in a straightforward format. If you feel like you could use some help to do a better job of leading your group of highly trained individuals, if you've just been promoted to the ranks of management and want some guidance or, worse, if you feel like you are herding cats - in Maister's phrase - instead of leading a committed team of professional people, we are pleased to recommend this complete toolbox to you.
Not as good as the ADV.......2002-11-26
I had high expectation from this book. However, after reading the first couple of chapters, I'm disappointed. This book, in a lot of parts, repeats what other books say, in particular "Managing the Professional Service Firm". If you read Maister's book before, you will be disappointed.
Not Just Lawyers.......2002-10-27
Great book on inspiring and steering a professional group by design rather than by charisma. For the imaginative person, the book could be applied to any group of professionals working together - whether in business, government, or church/Mission.

Well Written View of Dinosaurs and a Young Earth.......2006-03-19
Since I believe that Genesis 1-11 literally took place and since I believe that science must bow its knee to Scripture and not vise versa, I have longed believed that dinosaurs and humanity did in fact exist together and not millions of years apart. While this short review will not allow for me to give my own reasons for this belief, this book does a good job of putting the facts together for those willing to read and believe.
Dr. Deyoung has done a good job of taking the facts of the dinosaurs and showing how they do not conflict with biblical creation (Genesis 1-2). Dr. Deyoung believes in a literal six-day creation with God creating the dinosaurs along with all of other life forms found on our planet. He combines well researched science with a view that the Bible alone is the Word of God and it alone tells our origins.
Overall those who believe in a long age theory of Genesis 1-2 or those who completely reject the Bible as truthful will have problems with Deyoung's view but those who are true disciples will love what Deyoung has to say.
DINOSAURS, CREATION AND CONFUSION!!.......2004-03-28
Mr Deyoung makes the classic mistake of all people trying to use science to further their particular point of view. He looks only at what he likes and not at the totality of evidence. He throws out what doesn't match his opinion. Science and religion are oil and water, religion tries to remake the world in its image; science tries to explain the image looked at with available evidence. In science the explaination changes constantly due to new evidence. In religion, there can be no new evidence, only new ways to bend what can't be justified with the original dogmas. If you wish learn science, learn it from a scientist not a religionist.

Dinosaurs A book review
It is not farfetched to say that dinosaurs have been used extensively as an entrance into accepting evolutionary ideas. Many book stores and libraries have multiple listings of books and magazines about the creatures of the misty past. Most place these reptiles into some kind of evolutionary framework. The majority of publications seem intended for consumption by children. There are coloring books, picture(?) books, and stories about them, hoping the young readers can identify with the age of the dinosaurs, an age often assumed to be millions and millions of years ago. In more recent years several books have been published with the hope of bringing balance to this subject. One of these is: "Dinosaurs and Creation", by Dr. Donald DeYoung. Published this year by Baker Book House, this book is comprised of 50 frequently asked question (FAQ) about dinosaurs.
DeYoung chairs the Natural Science Division at Grace College, Winona Lake, Indiana and is president of the Creation Research Society. He is no stranger to the battle between evolution and creation. DeYoung lets his readers know, up front in the introduction, that this 120 page book presents dinosaur material from the creationary perspective. "Clearly the creationist view of dinosaurs," he says, "presented in this book is at odds with the interpretation of most natural history museums," and he gives several points as to what is meant by the creationary view. He notes that the "creation view ...provides many new avenues to explore." While standing firmly on the creationary path, DeYoung encourges his readers to consider an alternative perspective when thinking about dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs and Creation has five parts: Dinosaurs and History, Dinosaurs and Modern Times, The Dinosaur Family, The Biology of Dinosaurs and The Physics of Dinosaurs. In each he begins with asking common questions and providing balanced answers, noting both the evolutionary as well as the creationary stance. The book is not intended for very young readers; their understanding would be limited by the vocabulary but older children, maybe over 10 years of age and parents would benefit from this book. This would especially be true for parents wishing to have good answers when the youngsters come up with some tough questions. Or when an opportunity arises to assist children to appreciate good science, and not fanciful imaginations. There are a few graphics and drawings but the book is largely text.
DeYoung, for example, deals with the possibility of radiometric dating of dinosaurs and where do these creatures fit into biblical history; he looks at the various ideas about dinosaur extinction and dinosaur physiology. There is a list of scripture references to dinosaurian type of creatures, a summary of dinosaur names & a good glossary of words often used when discussing dinosaurs.
It is a generally easy-to-read book and can be a helpful source on an interesting topic. It would be a good item for anyone's bookshelf.

Institutionalized and state-sponsored persecution.......1998-08-26
An excellent analysis of the institutionalized and state-sponsored persecution of certain rule-breaking behaviour (illicit drug use)and the similarities between cultural and religious demands for specific mood-altering ceremonies and substances. This was the first book by Szasz that I read and I was impressed by depth of his philosophical and medical understanding of human behaviour. After reading this book I purchased, read and re-read the Myth of Mental Illness within 24 hours. Although Cermonial Chemistry was a delight to read, I think the Myth of Mental Illness is a timeless read and a comprehensive, logical and linguistic torpedo aimed squarley at an institutionalized war against human responsibility and the deep suspicion of the state against those who question through behaviour or language the role of the state in prescribing the rules of human conduct. Ceremonial Chemistry is an important book and a cornerstone in the debate on the inevitable de-criminalization of illicit drugs or the continued illegalization of certain foods and plants.

Stephen Jay Gould has a wide range of interests, and for many years he has shared his enthusiasms in the pages of Natural History and the New York Review of Books, among other journals. His passions include baseball, the puzzles of evolutionary theory, and the game of scholarly detection as it applies to questions such as, "What became of dinosaurs, anyway?". He answers entertainingly, but never talks down to his readers. Gould is one of modern natural science's great popularizers, but he shuns the temptation to make the giant reptiles of prehistory the Smurfs of the 1990s, in the manner of a certain purple dinosaur. The 35 pieces gathered here make for fine browsing, full of sideways glances and digressions that eventually make sense.

extraodinary range, intellectual but in laymans terms - wonderful.......2006-01-03
I have really enjoyed Stephen Jay Gould. His range of essays and the scope of topics he discusses has always interested me, as has in ability to draw from what is clearly a profoundly wide range of material which covers literature, history, religion as well as natural history. This is I think the thing that most interests me and it is something which we don't often find in intellectual writing now, that ability to draw parallels, or discuss in depth issues outside of a certain subject matter. It reminds me a bit of the late Alistair Cook and his letters from America and these essays are mostly of about the same length.
This collection is 35 essays and collected into 10 loose sections. These include some interesting groupings which you would normally not expect from a natural scientist including Intellectual biography. His biography of Antoine Lavoisier is a case in point. Lavoissier, a renowned scientist of his time, was condemned to death at the guillotine during the French Revolution, and indeed was beheaded. Gould's biography manages to touch on the aspects of his life and death including the myths which remain on his last words and days, the attempted scientific restructuring of France by the revolutionaries (including new measurements and renaming of the months etc) and the revolution's final downfall, it turned out the revolution did need scientists after all.
There are essays on "kiwi eggs and the liberty Bell" or one of my favourites on Glow worms which uses the life of this insect to discuss our understanding of life processes of all insects - is the adult form the ultimate, or, like glowworms which are pupa, should we be reconsidering our adult-centric view of the natural world?
I really enjoy Gould's style, it is easy flowing prose and fairly straightforward to understand. There are a few concepts which I have to re-read to get the actual meaning as some of these issues are complex - the issue of probability in evolution vs creation for instance is complex and takes a bit of consideration from a non-mathematician.
I would certainly recommend this book for those who hold a creationist or intelligent design belief. This provides some fascinating points of discussion which may provide some counterpoint to the Intelligent Design assertions. Gould's letter to President Jimmy Carter and Carter's own respect for Gould would be of interest if nothing else.
This is not an easy thing to sit down and read at once, but it is wonderful to browse in and out of and skip back and forth through.
Bully for Brontosaurus.......2002-02-08
Stephen Jay Gould writes another volume of essays that are profound in scope. Trying to review essays in book form is difficult, but taking the task at hand, here is what I have to say.
These collected essays are enlightening and thought provoking. They vary in scope and content, but are always stimulating. The author has a knack for making the reader think, as I suppose all good professors should, a task well taken here.
The writing is easily followed and straight forward with a smattering of Gould's wit thrown in for spice. The authou's sense of humor is also apparent. The essays are educational, even as the author brings two apparently different articles and ties them together with a common thread.
I found a cornucopia of disparate objects that fueled my intellectual pleasure, as I read through the book. Anyone interested in Natural History or just curious about life should read this book.
The author's flowing writing style is evident, his teaching skills are there to enjoy and learn from.
Read and enjoy good writing.
Practice Makes (More Nearly) Perfect.......2001-03-10
This is the sixth of the collections of Gould's essays from the magazine Natural History. Gould has commented that, as he got better at essay writing, he found the earlier volumes less pleasing. Certainly, as he went along, he improved both in literary quality and in the depth of his treatment of issues. Gould is amusing, but always with a serious purpose: to educate the public about how science works, and how, often, it doesn't. In particular, the section of three essays gathered under the heading "Numbers and Probability" is very good at making one think about the real nature of "the odds."
Gould makes natural science a fun read........2000-12-13
Gould makes clever analogies & comparisons of natural sciences with common things around us. Most of the topics he covered would be a bore to read by itself but Gould masterfully entertains & educates with his adroit prose & humorous side comments.
It is a bit on the long side and some of his comparisons used fads of the early 90's which are not relevant today; but all in all, the book is a winner.

I enjoyed several of the essays in this book. To me, they were fresh and insightful and interesting reading.
Then I got to read another essay on the same topic, then another. The organization of the book is such that reading it straight through bored me to death.
Gould could stand to edit some of these roundabout tales down and get to the point a little quicker. The thoughts are thoroughly interesting, but they are buried in long-winded prose.

Nurse helps young musical prodigy.......2003-11-13
Nurse Lark Tamany is sent to watch over a troubled little boy, Timothy, a piano prodigy who feels guilty about the death of his parents in a car accident. They were killed taking Timothy and his older brother to one of Timothy's concerts. Now Timothy is traumatized, and unable to play the piano at all. Under Lark's guidance, Timothy begins to play again. He even writes a song, "Ballad for Lark". Lark herself has guilt issues with the drowning death of her father, and the two form an understanding bond. But Lark is also aware that Timothy is the younger brother of Revel Thorne, who deserted her at the altar. How can she help Timothy and continue to come into contact with Revel?
This was an entertaining story, with many levels. Lark is especially good with children. This leads to her planning to start a children's home, late in the book. And the misunderstanding that led to Revel's inital jilting of Lark is believably explained. Will they have a real chance at happiness? It's worth reading to find that out.
