Book Description
Great management is difficult to see as it occurs. It's possible to see the results of great management, but it's not easy to see how managers achieve those results. Great management happens in one-on-one meetings and with other managers---all in private. It's hard to learn management by example when you can't see it.
You can learn to be a better manager---even a great manager---with this guide. You'll follow along as Sam, a manager just brought on board, learns the ropes and deals with his new team over the course of his first eight weeks on the job. From scheduling and managing resources to helping team members grow and prosper, you'll be there as Sam makes it happen. You'll find powerful tips covering:
- Delegating effectively
- Using feedback and goal-setting
- Developing influence
- Handling one-on-one meetings
- Coaching and mentoring
- Deciding what work to do---and what not to do
- ...and more.
Full of tips and practical advice on the most important aspects of management, this is one of those books that can make a lasting and immediate impact on your career.
Customer Reviews:
Practical Indeed!.......2007-07-09
I am very skeptical of most business improvement books and one size fits all methodologies, but I can tell you that this book absolutely shines as a glint of hope in the sea of business improvement noise. As opposed to trying to force a given technique that will apply to everyone in every business, this book provides some very "real" examples that exist in the software development world and some very simple concepts and techniques that can be used. This book is not written like an academic book of problems and solutions, but more of a story based book on a "real world" scenario, which truly solidifies the pragmatic name of the publisher. This pragmatic approach makes the book very easy to read, understand, and ultimately use. I think if you use at least one or two of the techniques presented in this book such as One-on-Ones and Big Visual Charts (BVCs) that the book will have more than paid for itself in terms of the time you will have spent reading it and of course the money!
Excellent Guide for New and Seasoned Managers of Knowledge Workers.......2007-06-04
This is an excellent work that guided me though my first formal management experience. The book weaves its lessons into a story which helped you to understand how to apply what you learned. Like many important books, it explains some simple rules that can be difficult to execute in practice. The downside of reading this book is that you may realized that you're not being managed well (or have not been in the past) and you can no longer live in blissful ignorance. All technical managers at all levels should have read a copy of this book. The section on having one on ones by itself is worth the price.
Basic solid info covered in fluff.......2007-03-28
Having gone through a recent re-org that calls itself "new" 6 months after the fact, a 2-hour reading of this book was able to bullet point a good many ways the new management chain is screwing up. Nothing in this book is actually "secret" (it's all pragmatic) and very little happens "behind closed doors" (by the time you're there, something's gone wrong), but it's a good primer to read for a new manager or a good primer to pummel a pointy-haired boss with when they're doing nothing right. The fictionalized case study running through the book didn't appeal to me, but the drawn out points and sidebars were well (that is "concisely") written.
Not sure why this book has good reviews.......2007-01-21
First, let me say that I have read many books off the Pragmatic Bookshelf. Many of the best books I read during 2006 were published by these guys. With that said, this is by far the worst book I have read in recent memory. It is very simplistic and not very engaging at all. It's like a Fischer Price introduction to management. I did read most of it, but only because I was trapped on an airplane to Norway. Incidently, I left the book on the plane. It wasn't worth the shelf space in my library.
Good book.......2007-01-14
I am a new manager and this book made me see how many things I'm not doing or what my manager is not doing either. This has caused me to wake up and begin trying to push for some changes in building teams instead of the groups that we are now.
Book Description
The Alchemy Of The Heavens offers an exciting and accessible survey of what we know about our galaxy. The home of the earth, the sun, and countless other stars, the Milky Way has long been an object of human fascintation, but it's been in the last forty years that astromoners and astrophysicists have made the most startling discoveries about our galaxy. Author Ken Croswell reveals that the Milky Way formed as many earlier galaxies collopsed and smashed together; that may of the elements in the galaxy--including the iron and carbon that course through our bodies--were born in exploding supernovae; that in all likelihood there is a massive black hole at the center of the galaxy, with a million times more mass than the sun, and that the Milky Way's oldest stars preserve the elements created in the big bang, thereby serving as "fossils" of the universe's earliest days. A captivating journey through the modern astronomy of the Milky Way, Croswell shows us how a deeper understanding of the nature and working of the galaxy can offer larger clues into the origins of the universe itself.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, still relevant.......2007-07-11
I agree with the other reviewers, this is good book. It's a well written introduction to stars of our galaxy and does a good job explaining how the structure of the galaxy came to be understood. I've read a lot of astronomy books, and I leaned a lot from this book. It covers the less flashy side of astronomy, yet it's oriented to the general reader not the amateur astronomer.
A key question in 2007, of course, is whether this book published in 1995 is now too out of date to buy. My answer is buy it. The last few chapters, which discuss topics like the Hubble constant, are now clearly dated, but history is history, and as far as I can tell (doing some cross-checking on Wikipedia) the core of the book, its discussion of Milky Way stars, holds up well.
Excellent read.......2006-08-27
The author does a good job in introducing the history and current understandings of the formation and properties of the Milky Way. Easy to follow and full of facts. Highly recommended.
("Other" user) A wonderful book.......2003-03-29
As an amateur astronomer who formerly considered the generic topic of the Milky Way to be humdrum, I must say that this book totally changed my opinion. Croswell structures each chaper as a mystery, in which facts slowly conglomerate until bam!-the researcher gets the "big picture", and you learn something new. He wants the reader to figure things out along with the various astronomers, rather than to just spit out facts. His style is engaging and never dull. *Highly* recommended for anyone interested in the Milky Way who doesn't want to start out with the big guns like Bok or Payne-Gaposchkin. Read it. Enjoy.
Not what I thought..........2001-07-11
After having read two books by Martin Rees, this book seemed rather elementary. My perspective is skewed by my previous knowledge of most of the subject matter, but I'd say there are other books on cosmology that would be more beneficial. On the other hand, if you're really just starting out and you don't have the greatest attention span, this might be a good one to start with.
An up-to-date account of modern cosmology.......2000-07-27
Croswell focuses on stellar evolution and the evolution of galaxies in a narrative that alternates between the very technical and the very personal. He gives first hand glimpses into the lives and thoughts of many modern astronomers and cosmologists and provides insights into the battles as they are being fought today. A great book to read if you're interested in the contributions of astronomers of the 70's right up to the mid-90's. He also gives an historical treatment of his main topics (stellar evolution and galactic formation) but the history is brief - his main focus is on the state of these investigations today.
Book Description
The new edition continues to offer a wide variety of organic lab experiments for both standard and microscale formats and features unusually strong coverage of spectroscopy.
Customer Reviews:
Strong Coverage of Spectroscopy, interesting labs.......2001-04-15
This book contains an exceptionally strong coverage of spectroscopy. Proton and carbon NMR are well explained, with detailed tables to predict and justify chemical shifts. IR spec is also well explained. A limited discussion of mass spec is also present. The laboratory exercises are clear in most cases, with a few minor exceptions. Be sure to read the instructions before lab as a few exercises contin ambiguous instructions that become more clear if the entire lab is read first. The number of syntheses is excellent, and many laboratory exercises contain interesting procedures that result in various colored, or common products. As a student of one of the authors, Dr. Douglas F. Taber, I have found this book to be a useful reference for spectroscopy as well as an excellent lab text.
Book Description
Complete successful lab experiments with THEORY AND PRACTICE IN THE ORGANIC LABORATORY WITH MICROSCALE AND STANDARD SCALE EXPERIMENTS! With coverage of 56 microscale and standard scale procedures and experiments, this chemistry lab text provides you with the tools you need to complete effective experiments. Numerous equipment and apparatus figures throughout improve clarity and save you time during the laboratory. Both the background chapters and the experiments contain exercises to help you understand and master the material.
Customer Reviews:
Dr. Landgrebe was my organic professor!.......2000-10-19
Dr. Langrebe has produced a comprehensive book although it could stand to be updated. Perhaps he is in the process now. What you can expect from this book is a lot of background information for the 50 expts presented later. The series of 50 experiments involves synthesizing and analyzing various organic compounds. Along side each experiment is the calculated time that it should take which is helpful when using this book for a class (which was the case for me).

Book Description
How Humans Evolved uses the broad perspective of behavioral ecology, drawing on Robert Boyd's expertise in evolutionary theory and Joan Silk's specialty in primate behavior in a uniquely integrative text. For the Third Edition, the authors have revisited many chapters in depth, added new supplemental readings, and incorporated the latest archaeological findings, including coverage of the fossil cranium Sahelanthropus tchadensis, whose dating was announced in the summer of 2002.
Customer Reviews:
Best Textbook in a long time!.......2007-09-21
This textbook perfectly outlines each chapter. The author states the important points before going into depth. If you find yourself reading a textbook for class and having to re-read over and over again because you keep zoning out, this book really helps. I found it to be very interesting and a helpful study tool.
Excellent.......2007-05-06
Presents material in an interesting, concise, and easy-to-read format - excellent choice for biological/physical anthropology students!
Terrific introduction to the study of human evolution.......2007-03-18
This is a terrific introduction (a textbook) to human evolution. It is written in a very accessible fashion--not just students but those in the larger public interested in the mechanism and products of human evolution will find this a useful volume.
The first part, of course, focuses on the evolutionary process, with a nice introduction to adaptation by natural selection and to genetics. Other introductory chapters introduce readers to the nature of species, phylogeny, and the synthetic theory of evolution. The discussion is well written and understandable. There are many examples to illustrate key points.
The next section explores primate evolution and behavior, to provide context for understanding human evolution and behavior. The chapter on the evolution of primate social behavior is especially helpful. Next, the authors take a look at the evolutionary lineage of humans, from primates to early hominids, to the genus Homo, to Homo sapiens. The text goes on to examine how language evolved, as well as evolution in modern humans (e.g., genetic diversity, the human life cycle, human behavior, and mate choice and parenting).
All in all, a nice introduction to the study of human evolution. Well worth taking a look at. . . .
Required textbook... but not bad reading.......2007-02-03
The book's authors cover some difficult material with excellent exapmles to help clarify main points. As far as a textbook goes, this was decent reading.
Now in its Fourth Edition.......2006-04-18
Any textbook that makes it to four editions has to be a good one, in use at a lot of places and one that fits the current collected wisdom of the subject. I say this bit about the current wisdom because all of the sciences are moving forward at an extremely rapid rate. New theories, new discoveries make science change.
This book is rare, if not unique, in how it presents controversy. Some scientists believe this, some believe that. Most authors tend to have beliefs that lean one way or the other. In this book the tendency is instead to present both views and give the evidence for each. This approach is more adapted to how science really works, but it is unusual, especially in a book intended for undergraduate use.
This book is somewhat of a combination between anthropology and evolutionary biology. As such it brings a better understanding of how human beings became what they are today, one slow step at a time. It also presents all of the known evidence from both field observations and laboratory testing. It shows a picture of Lucy's bones, and it goes into DNA and gene theory. It is complete a text as you are goign to find.

Some chuckles, but not much more.......1998-10-14
Much of the material here duplicates that found in the Big Book of Jewish Humor (1981) but somehow manages to make the jokes worse with time. There are a few nice ones but I went pages without so much as a giggle. If you want Jewish humor or even soviet Jewish humor try out the 1981 book mentioned earlier.
