Very comprehensive!.......2006-06-18
I bought this book after recieving my first telescope as a gift. I had no clue what I was doing with it. This book taught me to start with the basics. It includes 'assignments' that really help get you some experience. I deffinatley recommend it!
Absolutely Great!.......2006-05-23
Pat Price's book, the Backyard Stargazer may be intended for the absolute beginner, but it never once talks down to the reader. Price's lively provocative narrative inspires and informs. Plus for someone with some knowlege of the night sky, it is a welcome guide to putting it all together and making a game plan for getting serious about astronomy. I love the way the information is organized as Price takes us on a journey, giving us some historical information, then introducing us to our own solar system, the moon and the planets, stuff you can do in your own backyard without a telescope, then venturing out into deep space where all sorts of wonders await. What's really great about this book is that Price makes it seem all so accessible and takes some of the mystery out of what it takes to get to know the night sky. The book is packed with information and tons of facts; how to start observing the planets and the moon; what you can do with a pair of good binoculars (which is a lot!!); tips on what to look for in a telescope; whether or not you need to get a telescope, what's out there to see in deep space; plus wonderful sky charts and gorgeous photographs. After her introduction, Price dives right in and gives us observing projects in almost every chapter. The book is never too technical but is always entertaining and informative and because it's easy to read it never bogs down. I would think this book would appeal to all ages and if you're thinking of getting started in astronomy, whether you are an absolute beginner or have had a casual interest in astronomy all your life, this is the book for you!!
Beautiful, Easy-To-Read Beginner's Guide.......2006-04-23
As a late-comer to amateur astronomy, over the past three months I've been reading all the "recommended" beginner books for the hobby. After finishing five others, I stumbled across this book. If I had it to do all over again, "The Backyard Stargazer: An Absolute Beginner's Guide to Skywatching With and Without a Telescope," by Pat Price, is the book that I would have read FIRST--before attempting to tackle some of the other, more comprehensive astronomy "starter" pubs. In my view, this book contains everything a good first read on a subject should contain: an easy-to-comprehend discussion; easy-to-understand charts and diagrams; and absolutely beautiful photographs and illustrations. This book conveys all of the astronomy beginner "basics" using a friendly, conversational writing style. As with a gripping novel, I became eager to continue reading it all the way to the end. At less than 150 pages and fully packed with photos, I finished it in a little over a day(including copious notes). And you don't need to be taking up amateur astronomy to read this book. It is an excellent primer for anyone who wants to know more about the stars, planets, our sun, comets, eclipses, binoculars, telescopes, and astrophotography. This book tells you how and why "sky things" work, and includes star charts ("Sky Maps") to help you navigate the night sky. The appendices provide a wealth of information regarding online resources and future significant astronomical events. This book has earned my highest recommendation: BUY IT--read it--then tell a friend about it (I will.)
Gazing at The Backyard Stargazer.......2006-04-02
There's a lot to learn when it comes to astronomy but you must have a good understanding of the basics and that's exactly The Backyard Stargazer gives us. Starting with a nice introduction to the history of astronomy, we take our first step out under the sky. Under the stars, we're shown how to observe the night sky; how to read its air quality, how dress properly, the use of a red filtered flash light and how to relax when observing.
Now we're ready to use that knowledge for an evening's stargazing, what should we be looking for? Here the author takes us through the easy things like the moon the planets and the sun followed by nebulae, star clusters, galaxies and other members of the celestial zoon and, of course stars and constellations
Throughout The Backyard Stargazer, we're given tid bits to think about such as light pollution, astronomical history, how to safely look at the sun or the stars got their names.
Like any good guide, The Backyard Stargazer, doesn't tell us everything. We have to undertake some self guided studies. At the end of each chapter, we're given some homework to do that augment's the chapter.
For many of us its all about the tools and chapter 10: Adding Optics fill the bill nicely. Here we can drool and dream about the perfect telescope or how to choose a good pair of binoculars.
Capter12 is another favourite: Astro Travel. Astronomical Bed and Breakfasts and astronomy tours have become quite a niche market of late and getting larger and this chapter just touches on things the travelling astronomer can do.
This book is a great book for the budding astronomer. It's one that can be read in a weekend but will take a lifetime to absorb.

Confined almost without exception to the southern hemisphere, cichlids are perchlike lake- and river-dwelling fish that have long been an important source of food for humans--and that, in places such as Lake Tanganyika, are so overfished that they are in danger of disappearing. Outside the southern hemisphere, the cichlids, which number unknown thousands of species, are known mostly to tropical-fish enthusiasts through a colorful representative, the freshwater angelfish, though tilapia are increasingly farmed as a food source in Asia and North America. Those tilapia can grow to huge size, writes authority George Barlow, as can other cichlids. "Even an angelfish," he notes, "is apt to grow too large for the home aquarium and to devour tidbits like guppies and neon tetras, to the dismay of the aquarist."
In this engaging and often humorous survey of the cichlids, Barlow addresses aspects of the fishes' natural history and behavior, among them their well-known and often advantageous aggressiveness (one species is named for legendary boxer Jack Dempsey), peculiar mating habits, and unusual evolutionary adaptations (among them nearly prehensile internal jaws and the use of vocalizations in displays of hostility and courtship). Barlow also discusses larger issues of speciation, gene flow, and conservation. Detailed yet accessible to general readers, Barlow's book summarizes the work of a distinguished career. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Cichlid fishes are amazing creatures. In terms of sheer number of species, they are the most successful of all families of vertebrate animals, and the extent and speed with which they have evolved in some African lakes has made them the darlings of evolutionary biologists. With warmth and wit, Barlow describes the remarkably high intelligence of these fishes, their complex mating and parenting rituals, their bizarre feeding and fighting habits, and their highly unusual adaptations. A celebration of their diversity, The Cichlid Fishes is also a marvelous exploration of how these animals might help resolve the age-old puzzle of how species arise and evolve.

Good Book.......2006-03-28
This was a good book on Cichlid fish. Not for the Aquarist, for the Biologist. Title is a little misleading, the book is more about behavior than evolution although there is one good chapter of evolution. Of course, the evolutionary implications of the behavioral patterns are there but they are not the main focus of the writing.
Too Complicated.......2004-02-28
I have been in this hobby for about 6 years and I still have not found this book helpful for any of my needs. It is too much complicated and not helpful for an aquaristic interest.Especially If you are a beginner, you will not find it helpful. The book is especially written for people who has scientific interest on Cichlid fishes; in detail with very few pictures.
excellent treatment of cichlid behavior.......2003-12-08
The Cichlid fishes are one of the most diverse groups of animals in the world, this is partially an artifact of their distribution in rift lakes. This isolation in a diverse environment has led them to evolve to fill a myriad of ecological niches. They are also one of the most popular groups of aquarium fishes and their behavior and diversity is of interest to a large number of people. That is why this book, a scientific treatment of their behavior can be produced for a larger audience. As such this is perhaps the best book, available to the lay reader, on fish behavior.
George Barlow is (was) a fish behaviorist at UC Berkeley. In this volume he explains the complex behaviors of mate selection, territoriality, feeding, and the rearing of offspring in this well studied group. He also discusses their diversity and, sadly, has to address their conservation (as the their home is being lost to several environmental factors). This book is interesting and well written. However, it is probably only of interest to the most serious cichlid hobbyist, or persons with a special interest in fish behavior in general.
A Grand Narrative.......2003-07-21
The aquarium lights go out at a certain time every evening, and what's a fishkeeper to do but... read about fish?
Cichlidophiles can find many books on their favorite subject. These works, however, seem to go directly from beginner guides to dry, semi-scientific texts, perhaps poorly translated into English, with nothing in between. But publishing, like nature, abhors a vacuum.
Dr. George W. Barlow has woven together his own research with that of other scientists into a rich narrative of cichlid family history to fill this void. The Cichlid Fishes does read like a family history-flashy cousins, famous uncles, strange ancestors and the like-and science is their family diary.
No mistake, this is a serious exploration of Cichlidian evolutionary success. The important research Barlow and his peers have performed over the decades has answered many questions. Experiments and observation have shown that the Cichlids' spectacular rate of speciation arises from the physical characteristics of their jaws, thus increasing dietary options.
The strength of the research also lies in how many more questions it has raised. For example, the subject of parental care is understandably a dominant theme. The way the Discus feeds its young from secretions in its skin is documented, and the follow on question is, how did mammalian milk production evolve? The body of Cichlid data is a springboard for evolutionary studies everywhere.
Throughout this "serious" work, the reader finds that he or she is studying complex scientific theory painlessly. Barlow writes about his favorite subject with affection and humor, in a way that the hobbyist can enjoy as well as those who make a living in the field of biology. Definitions of scientific terms are seamlessly incorporated into the Cichlid story. After reading this book, you may find yourself spouting off words like "polygynandry" and "trophic" at your next hobbyist club meeting as if you were discussing the weather.
As in any family history, the story includes speculation on the future. What will happen to the fishes in this unsure world? Barlow gives statistics on the state of the Earth's waters and our affect on them, and presents his own opinions on their significance, based on the biology of Cichlids. Will Cichlids have a chance to continue evolving?
You, dear reader, are invited to explore Cichlid Fishes for yourself, in order to form your own opinion.
Surfing the web is something else you can do when the tank lights go out. For more information about The Cichlid Fishes, Dr. Barlow and his work, see his web page.
Excellent addition the natural history collection!.......2003-02-09
The first thing that needs to be said about this book is that it is NOT a book about keeping cichlids in aquariums. I think that is a misconception some people may get since cichlids are such popular aquarium subjects. If you're looking for information on cichlids in the aquarium, you need to hunt down books by Paul Loiselle or Ad Konings. This is a book about evolutionary science.
The cichlids are really the animal darlings of the evolution field in the same sense that the Galapagos Islands are the geographical Mecca. This book focuses on cichlids from the African Great Lakes: Malawi., Victoria, and Tanganyika. The populations in these lakes have been isolated and thus present a wonderful living experiment in evolution and speciation. The New World members of Cichlidae aren't forgotten - there's plenty of examples from them too.
The text doesn't delve too deeply into scientific theory. It's still a relatively easy read for the layperson. Its aim is to explain why the cichlids fascinate biologists and evolutionists - without getting overly technical. It achieves that goal admirably.
The bibliography is worth the cover price. There are 23 pages of small-print references and a numerical guide to citations by chapter.
If you're an aquarist with an interest in the science behind the fish, a scientist with little experience with fish or evolution, or a "normal" person wondering what all the fuss is about, this is a good choice.

Book Description
Since slavery, there has always been a Big Bucks in every Black neighborhood-desperately conniving, in some cases, to put two pennies together; owning, in others, a number of profitable businesses. He (or she) is a character cut from the same cloth as Rockefeller, Carnegie, Ford, and other giants of American Industry.
The great tragedy is not that Big Bucks and other Blacks like him are unknown in mainstream America, but that, to Black Americans, dazzled by lawyers and other professionals, these entrepreneurs remain invisible.
Whether you are trapped by a glass ceiling, a slave to the corporation, or are just looking for a way to "get off the plantation"; Daddy Big Bucks will inspire and motivate you.

Quite the Entreprenur.......2005-02-08
Being a black executive in a white man's world is what Bert is used to. After all, isn't that what black folks are trained to do? Thinking he has everything he's ever wanted in life right in the palm of his hand, Bert starts to rely on his own common sense, forgetting that the "real world" is never that nice.
Nice - Daddy Big Bucks is what they call him; the local shoe-shine man who just happens to be a tightwad and close associate of the CEO. Using his street smarts and shoe-shine business, he makes sure to get and effectively pass along all the company's pertinent information. At the same time, he has everyone thinking he's just what he appears to be. We all know looks can be deceiving, but how deceiving can a shoe-shine man be?
Not taking Daddy Big Bucks seriously is Bert's major mistake. As he begins to open up and "pay" Bucks, he becomes privy to the most important advice ever given: Be your own boss. Assuming that Bucks is a senile old man, he finally realizes that old sense usually turns out to be the best sense of all.
This novel was very short, but not a quick read. Although I understood where the author was trying to go with this, it still turned out to be confusing. The ending needs a lot of work; I felt I had been left hanging. Stylistically, the story was good, but overall, neither the story's concept, nor the moral was portrayed very well.

Wonderful discovery.......2004-06-20
What an interesting story. The writing was smooth, which made the story flow right along. I read this book in one day. The story centers around the main character named Hiawatha Jackson better known as Daddy Big Bucks. At first glance you take Daddy to be just a shoe shine person....but looks can be deceiving and in the case of Daddy they are completely wrong. For a three dollar deluxe shoe shine Daddy Big Bucks would give the managers his thoughts and knowledge of the various economic trends, stock market and people in general. In this story Daddy Big Bucks teaches us how we can achieve our own American Dream, by owning our own business or by rising to the top in the corporate world. As Daddy points out in the story just because you made it to the top of the corporate ladder and the only African American at the top; doesn't mean you get to stay on top. You find that there are some winner and losers in this story.

American Dream--revisited.......2001-07-15
While Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X disagreed on the process, in the 1960's both leaders worked with the same goal in mind-equality for Black people.
In Daddy Big Bucks by Robert Waite, the argument is expanded into the 1980's corporate world when an academically trained Black executive suddenly becomes aware of shoeshine man, Hiawatha Jackson, who for a three dollar "deluxe" shine would enlighten managers on economic trends from his supposedly humble perspective.
Daddy Big Bucks offers two opposing views on how African Americans can achieve the American Dream through either entrepreneurship or climbing the corporate ladder. One side wins at the close of the story, which ends with a comic twist.
Encouraging - A Must Read - For Trail Blazers.......2001-04-28
Wish this book was available 20 years ago when I started an investment banking firm.
Fun version of the American story........2001-04-23
This is an enjoyable fast read that jabs its serious messages across in a humorous way. The self made man is a very real traditional American figure with countless examples from every ethnic background, most often having interesting and ironic adventures along the way. This is one is special because it also examines many aspects of contemporary black experience in an unusual way through Daddy's story. It has a lot of straightforward wisdom about how anyone can make it and could inspire a lot of youths who may think they have no honest chances through their own efforts. Daddy is funny, sometimes outrageous but also challenging and thought provoking. The story moves right along and I hope the author writes a sequel.

Book Description
Bert Davis is on the corporate fast track - or so he thinks. By mastering the art of office politics, and not making waves with the head honchos at work, Bert has succeeded in snagging a cushy job: he's the recently named Director of Planning for American Instruments Inc. But just as he moves one step closer to the executive suite, Bert finds his career path blocked by a most unlikely rival: a shoeshine man known as "Daddy Big Bucks." Bucks may not have earned an MBA like Bert, but Bucks does have street sense, an understanding of people and, most important, he's got the ear of the Chairman of the Board.

A Good Read.......2005-10-18
Robert Waite conjures up a cleaver story of blacks striving to survive in business in " Daddy Big Bucks".
The story takes place in a New York City Corporation. Daddy Big Bucks is a lowly shoe shine man who shines the CEO's shoes daily. He also happens to be a Real Estate Mongol who owns a fifty-three foot yacht and manages to get much younger women to go out with him. Though no one would accuse him of looking like a stud.
Bert is a bootlicking executive who has sacrificed his soul and his blackness to get points in the corporate world. He learns the hard way that selling out doesn't always guarantee success.
This book is very well written. Mr. Waite a former executive, has his knowledge of corporate America down cold.
Through the characters, Daddy Big Bucks and Bert, Mr.Waite shows the struggle between pre-civil rights blacks who often took the lowly route to success and post civil rights movement blacks, who benefited from their labors and rode their coattails. It's a short book that moves quickly.
Mr.Waite was very thoughtful in developing all the characters.
All aspiring black businessmen should read this just to get a taste of what it's like for a black man in corporate America.

Good, with some weak spots.......2005-06-27
I really enjoyed this story; It has potential; and yes, there are plenty Daddy Big Bucks walking around our neighborhoods, but they are not known to mainstream America. I got caught up in the beginning with Bert trying to be the good executive in corporate America; Yet, some focus was placed more on his secretary's private business, which initially lead me to believe that perhaps some corporate piracy was going on but it wasn't; and the relationship that developed with Daddy Big Bucks and Bert; Now, this book could have really been great with some more financial advice and points as well as cut down the weak spots.Another thing, Bert's wife was on point on a lot of things, yet, he continued to ignore her advice. She saw things more so than he; Also, Daddy Big Bucks; You can't help but admire his business acumen, you wonder about his idiocyncracies; like not dating women over age 25; good book
Open Doors.......2004-06-23
Bert Davis, Director of Planning at American Instruments, is a proud Black man who has struggled to make it into the top echelons of corporate America: he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, he earned his M.B.A, and he has opened many doors in corporate America for Blacks less fortunate than himself. When American Instruments succumbs to a hostile takeover, the last thing Bert needs is for some old shoe-shine man to tell him how to survive the cuts.
Hiawatha Jackson, better known as Daddy Big Bucks the shoe-shine man, is a proud Black man who struggled to make it through life: his father was lynched, he earned his advance degree from the street of hard knocks, and he believes Blacks will never make it as a group if they continue fighting for acceptance by corporate America instead of owning their own businesses. He built his multi-million dollar company from the ground up and wants to reach back and mentor Bert.
Mr. Waite did an excellent job at laying out the two different approaches to success the main characters took. He showed pros and cons of each side in a balanced manner, and he uncovered a prejudice many of us have toward those in the service industry. My issue with DADDY BIG BUCKS is that Mr. Waite spent the vast majority of the book explaining the two sides. I felt like the story was on hold while the two main characters got to know each other. DADDY BIG BUCKS was a good book, but if the conflict was introduced earlier, this would have been a more exciting read.
