4 out of 5 stars Great resource for Instructional designers.......2007-08-23

An an instructional designer, I know how difficult it can be to find good written resources on the subject, and it is next to impossible to find resources that don't waste too much time on ID history and theory.

I wanted a practical resource, and that is exactly what this book is. It explains ID procedure in great detail and stays away from uneccessary theoretical mumbo jumbo. My only criticism is that it can get wordy and repetitive at times.
This is not a book for ID students, it's a book for actual instructional designers. I learned more from this book than any other book on ID.

4 out of 5 stars Very down to earth..........2007-07-06

I bough this text for a graduate course that I am taking. I really like how the author is down to earth and speaks on an understandable level. He also explains items very clearly.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to develop instructional material.......2007-03-16

This book has more than some instructors will need, but I think all of it has potential for being very useful. For example, I am using part of it to help me improve the layout of a book, another part to help me teach trainers how to write better instructional objectives, and the rest to refresh my learning in every area.

There is still the matter of teaching in an effective way, and this book was not developed for that purpose. But having a well organized block of instruction in which each part has a purpose, and having good printed material and plenty of participant interaction, will make teaching easier. This book provides all of that in abundance. I believe it should be a standard reference for committed trainers.

3 out of 5 stars Don't do it like this.......2005-10-08

For an instructional designer the author spent a lot of time going over what not to do versus what to do. I found his condescending attitude put me off. The info however is helpful, but I'm sure there is another book that can more effectively convey the information.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and applicable.......2005-09-30

This book has been a wonderful addition to my library. I am using it to train a couple of non-instructional designers on how to design and develop quality training. It has provided an easy to read comprehensive guide. The icons throughout the book guide those that are infrequent designers in the most applicable sections of the book vs. those that a professional ID person would need to know. I highly recommend this book.

Theoretical astrophysicist Rocky Kolb presents a popular history of astronomy and scientific cosmology from Tycho Brahe to the second half of the 20th century. In a style touched with humor and honed through numerous lectures to audiences ranging from third graders to Ph.Ds, Kolb introduces the pantheon of cosmologists, while offering a wonderfully proportional rendering of science and biographical sketches.

      Book Description

In this immensely readable book, noted cosmologist Rocky Kolb reveals the very human struggles of astronomy superstars seeking cosmic truths while lost in the clouds of confusion. Punctuated by the author's razor-sharp wit, this book provides anyone curious about science with a behind-the-scenes peek into the discovery process-it's not exactly the scientific method you learned in school.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for casual readers!.......2007-01-10

As like many others, I read this book for a class. I was given the choice between this book, and two other books, so I read the reviews for the three books, and this one sounded the best. All the positive reviews for this book were correct. The author puts his sense of humor into his tale of the history of cosmology. He tries to avoid all technical aspects of this field, and puts it in an appendix for those more curious than I. This book also went very smoothly. The first section goes by like a breeze! Only the last section on the current views of cosmology boggs down, and just by a little. I liked the book so much, that I gave it to my parents to read, and they're both in the art field, and they enjoyed it!

      An excellent read!

4 out of 5 stars Looking at the Sky.......2002-04-17

If you have ever wonder how new stars were found, and how scientist came up with the alignment of the planets. Then read Blind Watchers of the Sky:The People that Shaped our Views of The Universe. Discover how the scientist came up with their theories, and the basic history of cosmology. The book flows very well and is interesting. Learn more about the thought of the scientist that have spent most of their lives studying the sky.

      5 out of 5 stars It's simple and entertaining.......2001-05-24

Unlike the other reviewers here, I *had* to read this book. Why is that? Because I took Natural Sciences 101 at the University of Chicago, and it happened to be taught by the very same Rocky Kolb. I must say, I was a little leery about reading a book written by the prof, I mean, how self serving is that? But let me tell you, this book captivated me more than any other that quarter. It's clear and concise, but most importantly, its humor keeps you wanting to read more. He writes just like he teaches. That's his voice speaking from the pages, and he's speaking something he knows a lot about. If you want to get the basics of the history of cosmology and get in on the ground floor of a few of the more complicated cosmologiacl principals, all in an entertaining read, this book is for you.

      5 out of 5 stars A Stellar Book.......2001-02-23

I don't remember the last time I read a book that was as packed with fascinating facts about astronomy as this one. Better still, Mr. Kolb's dry wit makes the book a very quick read.

If you're interested in the history of astronomy and want a book that takes you past the basics, read this book. I can't recommend it highly enough.

4 out of 5 stars Blind Watchers of the Sky.......2000-05-10

After reading Blind Watchers of the Sky all I have to is, "wow!" I never thought I would learn more about (or care about, for that matter) astronomy. The basis of my celestial knowledge before reading this book was elementary to say the least. My comprehension of astronomy now is not that of a rocket scientist or anything but it is a secure foundation on which further studying will be easier understood because of the basic concept learned from this book. These concepts are not exactly abecedarian, they are not easy to grasp in a classroom or textbook. For some reason Kolb's intricate stories explain these concepts in a flowing manner that doesn't stress the mind. All of a sudden you are reading and you pause to say aloud to yourself, "Oh, I get it." I would recommend this book to anyone. You need no past knowledge to enjoy the book or any great passion to learn about astronomy because it is entertaining aside from the fun facts you learn. I am not an astronomy scholar so I am unaware what there take on this book would be. But this is also an excellent source for high school astronomy students having a difficult time grasping our celestial ideas. -JoAnna Newburn

5 out of 5 stars An Alchemical Cornerstone.......2006-11-05

"The Alchemist's Handbook" by Frater Albertus is the one that started it all. Prior to its publication in 1960 there was almost nothing available in the popular literature regarding actual alchemical practices. Written mainly as a beginner's guide as well as an introduction to the Paracelsus Research Society he would later found, the "Alchemist's Handbook" has guided many on their first steps of the alchemical path. Criticised as being heavy on theory and light on practice, it follows the alchemical injunction of 'theory before practice' and does give enough practical information to begin making spagyric products.

Since the creation and later closing (2000)of the Franco-American alchemical society The Philosophers of Nature there has been an explosion of alchemical information on the Internet, in addition, much of this material has also found its way into print. In 2006 at least three books addressing practical laboratory methods appeared in print, all in some fashion having a connection to Albertus and this slim but important book. One of Albertus' later works, "Praxis Spagyrica Philosophica - Plain and Honest Directions on How to Make the Stone" contains additional information and should also be read, unfortunately it is often out of print.

If you are new to hermeticism and alchemy and would lilke to know a little about practical work, or are seeking foundational steps along the path of the Philosophers, this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Practical (Laboratory) Alchemy!.......2006-08-01

Somewhere between the Renaissance and the late Industrial Era, Alchemy changed from an esoteric practice performed practically, in a laboratory environment, to a New Age process by which one changes themselves through meditation and mysticism. All of the ancient texts and grimoires have been construed in this light, now being seen as "blinds", whose real subject was purely spiritual, the whole laboratory process not intended to be taken seriously. Despite the history of the development of modern chemistry, New Agers have bought into this, and the number of texts out there to help the aspiring "spiritual alchemist" in "translating" the ancient grimoires on the subject and their techniques to spiritual practice abound.

This book goes a long way to putting things back the way they were intended. Frater Albertus (one Albert Reidel), who, along with John Reed, is widely regarded as one of the re-discoverers of modern practical alchemy, believes that grimoires say what they mean, and that the techniques within were designed to be practiced, not as metaphors for further practice and techniques. In the extraordinary handbook for the beginner, Reidel illustrates in detail the basic principles of practical (laboratory) alchemy, and describes for the beginner all the things that they will need, both to know and to practice, in order to begin this most fascinating Art and Science.

It is a beginner's book, without doubt but, coupled with Junius's Practical Handbook of Plant Alchemy, it will get the aspiring alchemist pretty far along the path before additional instruction is required. At that point, the alchemist will need to seek out and enroll in the 7-year course (some have done it in less) in Practical Alchemy prepared by Reidel, or wait until Mr. Joseph Lisiewski finishes his summary course based on the same (pull your finger out, Jo!).

      Very highly recommended!

      5 out of 5 stars As advertised.......2006-03-18

This is a great beginner's book into the art of practical alchemy. It gives advice on how to set up a practical alchemical lab using widely available apparatus, and how to get started with the Lesser Circulation (herbals). Also included is a great overview of the Magnum Opus of alchemy. A must-have on any alchemist's shelf, or for anyone interested in alchemy.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the scientist.......2006-02-24

As it's title says it is a handbook for all things Alchemy and if you're some "Full Metal" Fan (a anime series)please DO NOT READ this book! It's alittle techincal and not for the curious.

      p.s.
pick up a book that deals with plant guide for this book.It helps.

5 out of 5 stars An Alchemical Masterpiece.......2006-02-23

As a neophyte to the Royal Art, I found this book to be exceedingly, in the words of Isreal Regardie, worth it's wait in gold. If you've even a smidgin of interest when it comes to practical Alchemy, this book has all you need, as a beginner in the Royal Art, when it comes to the proper Spagryical operations.

It has all the information you're going to need to master the Prima Materia, using modern equipment. From how to collect various plant materials and how prepare them, to the Astrological correspondencies of plants and metals and the proper cyphers and glyphs, this book is perfect for the aspiring Alchemist.

My only criticism is the lack of description when it comes to tradtional, Alchemical apparatus and how to use them. Though, this will only be a concen with those of a more traditional mindset.

Some books I recommend picking-up along with this book, is Alchemical Guide to Herbs & Food, Alchemy Reference Guide, and A Time For Magick.

3 out of 5 stars The Alchemists Handbook.......2000-06-10

This particular book, though out-of-print, I consider to be the epitome of the Alchemists work. This work allows the reader to find his or her own way to bridge the gap between regular science and metaphysics. The author makes note of the fact that the Alchemists of the past are todays chemists and the astrologers of the past are todays astronomers. Perhaps with more titles such as this we can make physics out of meta-physics. If you can garner a copy I would highly recommend it for the serious scholar of the meta-sciences.

E.O. Wilson defines sociobiology as "the systematic study of the biological basis of all social behavior," the central theoretical problem of which is the question of how behaviors that seemingly contradict the principles of natural selection, such as altruism, can develop. Sociobiology: A New Synthesis, Wilson's first attempt to outline the new field of study, was first published in 1975 and called for a fairly revolutionary update to the so-called Modern Synthesis of evolutionary biology. Sociobiology as a new field of study demanded the active inclusion of sociology, the social sciences, and the humanities in evolutionary theory. Often criticized for its apparent message of "biological destiny," Sociobiology set the stage for such controversial works as Richard Dawkins's The Selfish Gene and Wilson's own Consilience.

Sociobiology defines such concepts as society, individual, population, communication, and regulation. It attempts to explain, biologically, why groups of animals behave the way they do when finding food or shelter, confronting enemies, or getting along with one another. Wilson seeks to explain how group selection, altruism, hierarchies, and sexual selection work in populations of animals, and to identify evolutionary trends and sociobiological characteristics of all animal groups, up to and including man. The insect sections of the books are particularly interesting, given Wilson's status as the world's most famous entomologist.

It is fair to say that as an ecological strategy eusociality has been overwhelmingly successful. It is useful to think of an insect colony as a diffuse organism, weighing anywhere from less than a gram to as much as a kilogram and possessing from about a hundred to a million or more tiny mouths.

It's when Wilson starts talking about human beings that the furor starts. Feminists have been among the strongest critics of the work, arguing that humans are not slaves to a biological destiny, forever locked in "primitive" behavior patterns without the ability to reason past our biochemical nature. Like The Origin of Species, Sociobiology has forced many biologists and social scientists to reassess their most cherished notions of how life works. --Therese Littleton

      Book Description

View a video on Professor Wilson entitled "On the Relation of Science and the Humanities"

Harvard University Press is proud to announce the re-release of the complete original version of Sociobiology: The New Synthesis--now available in paperback for the first time. When this classic work was first published in 1975, it created a new discipline and started a tumultuous round in the age-old nature versus nurture debate. Although voted by officers and fellows of the international Animal Behavior Society the most important book on animal behavior of all time, Sociobiology is probably more widely known as the object of bitter attacks by social scientists and other scholars who opposed its claim that human social behavior, indeed human nature, has a biological foundation. The controversy surrounding the publication of the book reverberates to the present day.

In the introduction to this Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Edition, Edward O. Wilson shows how research in human genetics and neuroscience has strengthened the case for a biological understanding of human nature. Human sociobiology, now often called evolutionary psychology, has in the last quarter of a century emerged as its own field of study, drawing on theory and data from both biology and the social sciences.

For its still fresh and beautifully illustrated descriptions of animal societies, and its importance as a crucial step forward in the understanding of human beings, this anniversary edition of Sociobiology: The New Synthesis will be welcomed by a new generation of students and scholars in all branches of learning.

This book caused a lot of controversy in the 70's because it states that humans are animals and that their societies can be investigated and understood by biology. Apparently since Darwin called humans animals no other scientist had caused such anger among the ones who "think" of themselves as the reason for the existence of the Universe.

5 out of 5 stars Very thought provoking!.......2006-01-20

This book covers nearly the whole gamut of animal behavior and from many species. It was very detailed and I loved its philosophical bent. I didn't necessarily agree with all of Wilson's conclusions but this work was very absorbing. If you have any interest in animal or human behavior read this book!

5 out of 5 stars The Tests of Time.......2005-01-12

Dr. Wilson's "Sociobiology," together with "The Insect Societies" and "On Human Nature" (that three volume set is essential to any thinking man's library) is sufficient to challenge and focus any perspective on Evolution and Society. These volumes, even after 30 yrs., simply do not allow themselves to be ignored. Someone without both concentration and some technical background will have a tough time with "Sociobiology." Dr. Wilson presents a very detailed argument, quite reminescent of "Insect Societies." That said, the writing style is engaging and clearly directed at the non-professional reader. The Point: I gave copies of all three volumes to my children when they left home for the university.

4 out of 5 stars Good read, but more like a science textbook.......2004-04-03

Having been a science major, this book at times reminded me of reading a biology textbook. At other times though, the author does use his literary skills and story telling ability and keeping things humourous; especially when he tells of the murder, deception, treachery, intrigue and chemical warfare of his beloved ants.

There is A LOT of theory in this book. He will typically describe an organisms behavior or behavioral trends and then desrcibe the competing hypothoses for these trends, phenomena or divergance from these typical trends.

Like I said though, this book is technical. Don't attempt reading it unless you have completed 2 courses of undergrad biology and calculus, as well as chemisty (most of the chemicals used by ants and the like involve simple organic compounds I was a chem major myself.)

In other words, this is not like On Human Nature or Journey to the Ants: This is more like a 3rd or 4th year advanced biology course textbook.

      5 out of 5 stars Recommended by a dissenter.......2003-04-08

Great read! Well written, well thought out but I disagree strongly with parallels drawn with human societies. Would recommend this wholeheartedly for every thoughtful reader.

                    Book Description

With the award of a Nobel Prize in 1986 to Binnig and Rohrer for their invention of the scanning tunneling microscope, the field of scanning microscopy was given a strong boost. Microscopic techniques are used not only for research work in material and life science but also for routine applications in almost all vital sectors of everyday life. The demand for better understanding of materials and of all aspects of human life initiated an ongoing development of improved microscopic techniques. In particular, expanding the capability to access nature's foundations at the atomic level is now recognized as having the potential for major impact in information technology. This volume presents the proceedings of the IMO Symposium Fall '90, which brought together leading scientists in scanning microscopy from research institutes and industry, each of whom was invited to contribute a lecture. The lectures on the techniques of scanning microscopy and of current applications, including results of recent ESPRIT basic research actions, provide a complete overview of the state of the art.
