Book Description
High profile cases of financial statement fraud have been dominating the news recently, causing people to question the accuracy of the financial information made available by companies. This book covers the roles and responsibilities associated with preventing and detecting financial statement fraud, including current developments and professional activities intended to reduce the occurrences of fraudulent financial reporting. It discusses the failures involved in the Enron collapse and includes a Forward by Joseph T. Wells from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. This books provides an invaluable context for understanding financial statement fraud.
Customer Reviews:
Important work on a very timely subject.......2002-03-13
This book is a must-read for anybody involved in financial reporting, including investors who are putting their savings at risk. It breaks down financial statement fraud, how it occurs, and how it can and should be prevented or detected in the corporate hierarchy (auditor's role, audit committee's role, management's role, etc.) It is extremeley relevant, especially in light of the Enron situation, well organized, and comprehensive. The Foreword by Joseph Wells makes a powerful argument on how pervasive a problem financial statement has become and speaks to this book's importance as part of the solution.
Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Critical Perspectives on Accounting, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Financial statement fraud (FSF) has cost market participants, including investors, creditors, pensioners, and employees, more than $500 billion during the past several years. Capital market participants expect vigilant and active corporate governance to ensure the integrity, transparency, and quality of financial information. Financial statement fraud is a serious threat to market participants' confidence in published audited financial statements. Financial statement fraud has recently received considerable attention from the business community, accounting profession, academicians, and regulators. This article (1) defines financial statement fraud; (2) presents a profile of financial statement fraud by reviewing a selective sample of alleged financial statement fraud cases; (3) demonstrates that ''cooking the books'' causes financial statement fraud and results in a crime; and (4) presents fraud prevention and detection strategies in reducing financial statement fraud incidents. Financial statement fraud continues to be a concern in the business community and the accounting profession as indicated by recent Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enforcement actions and the Corporate Fraud Task Force report. This paper sheds light on the factors that may increase the likelihood of financial statement fraud. This paper should increase corporate governance participants' (the board of directors, audit committees, top management team, internal auditors, external auditors, and governing bodies) attention toward financial statement fraud and their strategies for its prevention and detection. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 was enacted to improve corporate governance, quality of financial reports, and credibility of audit functions. The Act establishes a new regulatory framework for public accountants who audit public companies, creates more accountability for public companies and their executives, and increases criminal penalties for violations of securities and other applicable laws and regulations. Given the difficulties and costs associated with deterring financial statement fraud, understanding the interactive factors described in this article (Cooks, Recipes, Incentives, Monitoring and End-Results (CRIME)) that can influence fraud occurrence, detection and prevention is relevant to accounting and auditing research.

From the supplier: The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants has issued SAS No 82, 'Consideration of Fraud in a Financial Statement Audit.' The standard defined an accountant's responsibility in detecting fraud when auditing financial statements. The standard reflects a stricter emphasis on business ethics, which was not present in earlier rules that practically freed the accountant from liability and responsibility for fraud detection.

Book Description
The content industries consider Digital Rights Management (DRM) to contend with unauthorized downloading of copyrighted material, a practice that costs artists and distributors massively in lost revenue.
Based on two conferences that brought together high-profile specialists in this area - scientists, lawyers, academics, and business practitioners - this book presents a broad, well-balanced, and objective approach that covers the entire DRM spectrum. Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the field, the book is structured using three different perspectives that cover the technical, legal, and business issues.
This monograph-like anthology is the first consolidated book on this young topic.

Book Description
DMCA is a compilation of questions, comments and some answers pertaining to the DMCA - Digital Millenium Copyright Act
Customer Reviews:
An important topic, a data dump, and no expertise.......2001-07-03
Sure, the DMCA is an important topic. It is certainly a complex one, with many players having competing interests. I applaud Ms. Wilbur's efforts.
That being said, this book offers little added value. It makes a great reference book, as all but 77 or so pages contain copies of various legislation. The book lacks any expertise, any interviews of those with expertise, or proper punctuation. Instead of posing well thought out questions and then positing hypotheses or data, Ms. Wilbur merely spews question after question, with no attempt at finding an answer. She brainstorms well, but doesn't follow through with any research.
The title for the review sums it up. Know what you're buying. You aren't buying any new insight or expertise with this book. You are buying a handy refernce to the law, and a heap of off-the-cuff questions.
Michael Sims - Slashdot.......2001-06-08
....DMCA draws very strongly from online debates -- it's fast-paced, rushed, very much a persuasive work rather than an informative, scholarly one, and could use some serious copy-editing. Nevertheless, it's an interesting read, and the only paper work I've seen to date that accurately captures the flavor of online discussions about the DMCA.
A waste of time.......2001-04-16
I'm embarrassed to admit I paid money for this book. It is written by a computer science major with no background in the law and no understanding of the issues underlying the law. If the book is simply viewed as a collection of hyperlinks to anti-DMCA websites, it is successful. But as an intelligent discussion of the DMCA or the issues surrounding it, it is a total waste of time and money.
Excellent read.......2001-02-26
This is an excellent read for anybody. Any webmaster should surely read this, as should anyone else who deals with online content. It is a strong argument on why the DMCA isn't constitutional and why it should be repealed. It's written in a question/answer format, thus making it easier to find specifics. A must read.
Book Description
Commercially-made astronomical telescopes are better and less expensive than ever before, and their optical and mechanical performance can be superb. When a good-quality telescope fails to perform as well as it might, the reason is quite probably that it needs a little care and attention! Here is a complete guide for anyone who wants to understand more than just the basics of astronomical telescopes and accessories, and how to maintain them in the peak of condition. The latest on safely adjusting, cleaning, and maintaining your equipment is combined with thoroughly updated methods from the old masters. Here, too, are details of choosing new and used optics and accessories, along with enhancements you can make to extend their versatility and useful lifetime. This book is for you. Really. Looking after an astronomical telescope isn’t only for the experts - although there are some things that only an expert should attempt - and every serious amateur astronomer will find invaluable information here, gleaned from Barlow Pepin's many years’ experience working with optical instruments.
Customer Reviews:
Not living up to the expectations.......2007-04-24
The title of this book is: Care of Astronomical Telescopes and Accessories - A manual for the Astronomical Observer and Amateur Telescope Maker. This should make clear what to expect inside the book. Actually it consists of 253 pages and is divided into two main parts, Section I, Optical Equipment and Section II Care and Maintenance, the latter being the topic. So actually only about 60% of the book do deal with what the title promises, namely Care and Maintenance.
If you buy such book you are most likely already the owner of some astronomical equipment and would like to learn how better to take care of it. So you'll be asking yourself what purpose a 96 page primer on telescopes and accessories serves. What a waste of precious space that could have been used for better information as we will see.
Unfortunately even some basic mistakes are to be found in Section I. For example 1 Ångstrom equals 10-5 cm should in reality be 10-8 cm. Ångstrom is by any means no longer an official standard measure of the electromagnetic wavelength, since quite some time this is expressed in Meters or in the optical range in nm.
It is a bit strange to state: When Amateur Astronomers use the word `Telescope' they refer to the complete set from tripod foot to optical tube assembly. I never found this in any of the forums or elsewhere.
The name of Abbe is permanently written incorrectly as Abbé. This should not happen to an author who claims to have vast experience.
Quite a few incorrect sentences can be found like Dolland and his son and Peter. Speaking of John and Peter Dolland and their work, it is definitely necessary to mention that they did not pay tribute to Hall's work even though they had great profit from that.
The hints on Point of Purchase checks are useful but missing any reference to Yahoo Groups or similar forums where a wealth of information can be found before and after purchase.
A new mathematical procedure can be found: Divide by half. That should of course read ...by two. A division by half equals a multiplication by two.
The references to certain pictures should be made at least like see figure 3.12 and not see Chapter 1. To make live easier the page number would be quite helpful. It seems the author took it rather easy as there are even some incorrect cross-references.
It seems the author has never heard about carbon fiber as a well established material for optical tubes. At least he claims that some makers are experimenting with it. Also the fact that a white surface reflects better than a black one is mistaken as better cooldown for white tubes.
Some interesting recommendations are given in Section II, the 60% of the book dealing with the topic. Breath cleaning as well as cleaning with rainwater are being recommended in different cases. While breath cleaning is not a good idea due to the pollution by grease and even smoke particles in the case of smokers and rainwater is no replacement to demineralized water since acid rain is well known worldwide except to the author.
What size does an 8 Penny coin have? It seems to be a well known dimension to the author. The Antoniadi scale for seeing is used by most observers in Europe according to the author. I'd like to know what experience he really has. Even in Europe the Pickering scale is being used.
Don't misunderstand me here, the book gives some detailed information on care of telescopes and equipment. It could be done much better, however, by replacing the Section I on optical equipment basics with lots of pictures and drawings about how things are performed correctly. By drawings I do not mean the sketches by the author showing telescopes in general as kind of an artist's impression without relevance to the subject.
The general impression of the book? You can get the same and actually better information through the internet and from forums as well as from many manufacturers of astronomical equipment. I am happy I only borrowed this book. It did by no means live up to the expectations.
The Best, from the Best.......2004-11-18
I cannot specifically review this book, as I have not yet read it. I can, however, "review" the author, so to speak. Mr. Pepin was my uncle, until his unexpected and tragic recent passing. Throughout his life, he always amazed me with both his wealth of astronomical knowledge and his adeptness at working with, and even constructing his own, telescopes. This combination of intellectual and physical skill have now resulted in this great volume, just released posthumously. It is ironic that my uncle first embraced astronomy when the death of his own mother prompted him to look heavenward. Now, in his death, he inspires us to look heavenward as well. I have observed, and I believe he would agree, that if we cannot with our eyes look upon Heaven, at least we can gaze at the heavens.

Book Description
Presented here for the first time are up-to-date reviews of a new and rapidly developing field of investigation: magnetic solids with polarized photons. The current experimental and theoretical fundamentals of the interplay of spin-orbit interaction and magnetism are described and recent advances in the understanding of the related spectroscopic phenomena are outlined. New aspects on a variety of methods are reported, covering magneto-optical Kerr-effect studies, spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, dichroism in X-ray near- and extended-edge absorption, and X-anomalous scattering. The potential of these methods to reveal new insights in the magnetic aspects of the electronic structure and the microscopic origin of magnetic properties is discussed.

Author, and illustrator, Irwin Fleminger has created a cartoon history of Brooklyn that is a pictorial satire of stories, myths, and legends of the "Mother of Boroughs". More laughs per page than "War and Peace" this history of Brooklyn is the only history that describes the emergence of Brooklyn from a primordial molten mass of planetary magma through pre-historic and historic times, to the Wednesday after Presidents day, 1997.

The Jetty Chronciles, a fun and easy read.......1998-12-09
The Jetty Chronciles was a fun and easy book that I enjoyed reading! The books main plot was about a boy who shares all his experencies of growing up by a jetty. The book was very well written and flowed togher very well. I really enjoyed taking a break from reading 300 page novles that take a month for me to read to reading a book that I could read in 2 days and really enjoy. I would recommend thso book to anyone who is looking for a fun and easy read.
If you put it down for more then five min your lost.......1998-12-08
The book is about a kids childhood and how his life is centered around a "rock". There is no real meaning to all of the adventures but it is a good wast of time if your siting on a rock waching boats go by. I wish I had the time back in my life I wasted reading this book.
This was an okay book........1998-12-08
Jetty Chronicles is an interesting book about a boy who spent his life out on the jetty in Brooklyn. I enjoyed the different experiences and stories the boy tells about different people he encounters out on the jetty. It relates real experiences anyone could have and what this boy learned from them.

A modern & nostalgic trip = all at the same time.......2001-05-31
A warm and nostalgic trip through a woman's life - with excellent recipes that bring back the feelings of comfort and a life lived with joy...I loved the book and the recipes.....Have given the book to a lot of family & friends. My mother-in-law who lives in Australia and was born in New Zealand, said it was reminiscent of her life as well and that the recipes were great...
My Mother Loves It.......2001-05-31
My mother is 85 years old. She is Italian. She has been cooking just about all her life (good stuff). I gave her a copy of the book. She called me to say it is wonderful and she wanted to buy a few copies to give as gifts.
She liked the content - the recipies; she loved the stories which set the stage for and support the recipies; and she laughed out loud at the illustrations.
I don't cook. But I loved reading the book.
Delicious!.......2001-05-28
Tasty recipes, heartfelt essays and illustrations to make you smile are a winning combination. Buy this book! It's a winner!
Great food mixed with some humer.......2001-05-27
This book has nothing but delicious recipes! I've made quite a few and found them all to be quite good. There is a story in this book about Ellen Verni's family and her opinions on many different things which give you a laugh and take you back in time. The recipes are easy to read and easy to make and are all mouth watering. You'd definitly keep going back to make more and remake the one's you've come to love.
This Book Cooks!.......2001-05-27
I hardly know the French Chef from the Cajun Cook but I know good writing when I see it and Ellen has all the ingredients-wit,personality and the ability to tell a tale,to cook up a book good enough to eat! Even someone who boils hot dogs gets the urge to do some creative cooking after reading this book.Friends,family,food...three things everyone loves and everyone will love this book . This is a first rate writer cooking up a recipe for reading enjoyment. And I pretty much know something is good the first time I read it so I won't be changing my review tomorrow.
