decent introduction, but needs more.......2007-05-07

In an introduction to a topic, one expects lots of figures to explain just about every topic. This book, and indeed the entire series, generally has rather few figures. The series also, generally, focuses on the historical development of the topic and not necessarily on the current understanding of the topic. Therefore, the series sacrifices a better explanation of our current understanding to explain who thought what and when. However, that is a matter of personal taste as to whether this is a digression or not. Nonetheless, this book serves adequately in the capacity of a "very short introduction."

Surprisingly readable.......2006-07-12

I never would have expected a book with chapters discussing physics concepts to be enjoyable or understandable. Nor did I expect a book on cosmology to include that type of thing in the first place, which shows how little I knew about the topic before I read this. Needless to say, understanding the concepts author Peter Coles presents and actually wanting to know more about them was a pleasant surprise.

This book flows smoothly from topic to topic, and the author does a good job of explaining things at a level detailed enough so you get some of the science behind things but not at a level so in depth that the average reader would be lost. A few helpful diagrams are also scattered about the book in places which would otherwise cause confusion. Where applicable, Coles gives brief introductions to various competing theories and points out both their strong and weak points.

Despite being "a very short introduction," the book is very solid and thorough. The information presented is well organized and builds upon itself, so essential concepts are reinforced even as new ones are discussed. After finishing the text, I skimmed through the index and found that I actually remembered what most things listed there were. The only exceptions were names of people, and those aren't exactly essential to understanding the subject matter.

I started this book without a completely accurate idea of what cosmology is, and I finished it knowing far more about it than I expected to. As such, I must say Coles was extremely successful in writing "a very short introduction" to cosmology, and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject.

An excellent introduction to cosmology.......2005-08-07

First, be warned that Amazon has mixed up two very different books here. Cosmology: A Very Short Introduction is the 139-page paperback I am reviewing. The editorial review refers to Cosmology: The Origin and Evolution of Cosmic Structures, a 520-page hardcover. At the time of writing this review, Amazon have the two books confused and you will find the same editorial and user reviews under each. So if you order one, make sure it's the right one.

Anyway, Cosmology VSI is excellent. Laymen's guides to physics usually resort to metaphors that are seriously misleading. The alternative is a highly mathematical approach that is inaccessible to most readers. Coles manages to simplify without misleading. Actually, some basic knowledge of physics is assumed, at least if you want a full understanding of what is being said, but it is never beyond high school level and most of the book does not require even that.

Covering relativity, quantum theory, particle physics and much else, this is a perfect introduction to a vast and profound topic. My only complaint: cosmology is a fast-changing subject. A new edition is needed very soon.

A very good introduction to cosmology.......2004-03-28

Professor Coles' book on cosmology in the VSI series is a very good introduction to the subject. If you search for a first book on the subject, that's it (although you can also choose Stephen Hawking's Brief History of Time and the contents of these two books could complement with each other)! It provides an overview of the key concepts of cosmology in non-technical language while preserving room for deeper thought and exploration for those who are not satisfied with an introduction.

In my opinion, Chapter 2 provides the best simplified exposition of Einstein's relativity and here and there the book shows very clear exposition of the Hubble's law with kept-to-minimum mathematical presentation which is comprehensible by the general reader without relevant training at all.

Although it may be my own problem, I cannot quite get hold of the key concept of the Friedmann models. The models are first presented in Chapter 3 but they are often quoted in later chapters. Reading them all together, I fail to make a coherent understanding on the models.

I found this book is very helpful for finding some chemical material. I myself not a chemist or someone that works for chemical related things. This book contains very straight information, and easy to understand.

Displaced Man and far-off God

The Author of The Numinous Legacy races along with a passionate love of his subject and a sense of personal commitment that must engage even the stoniest hearted reviewer.

Adair Butchins basic thesis - that the pre-Copernican religion cannot be made to fit with post Copernican cosmology- is a truth too seldom heeded. He points out that the displacement of humanity from its unique place in the universe has had a disproportionate effect on the three "western religions" of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Much of the anthropocentric doctrine, especially in relation to eschatology, has been rendered untenable. By contrast the eastern traditions, whose vision of the ultimate unity of the universe has not depended upon humankind, have fared better. Such an analysis is supported by the comparative popularity of Buddhist and neo-Vedantic practices among western intellectuals.

Butchins considers the strategies adopted by religious apologists in the West since the 17th century. He concludes that they have kept the door open for some kind of divine creation, as a possibility at least, but have failed to justify any of the specific doctrines relating to sin, redemption and judgement, which lie at the heart of much religion.

This is an acute observation. A religion such as Christianity stands or falls by its practical value in helping ordinary people face the challenges of human living. It is the creationists and charismatics, defying science and offering a hands-on interventionist God, who fill their churches. Modernists and liberals, attempting to reconcile pre-Copernican dogma with modern science, see their pews emptying. A distant God and a loss of immediacy, is the price they pay for a faith that is intellectually respectable.

A Review of The Numinous Legacy by Adair Butchins.......2003-10-19

Perhaps the visitors to this website will feel the same degree of excitement I felt when I first read The Numinous Legacy. Dr. Adair effectively explains the orderly universe in a manner, which makes the reader immediately comfortable. His eloquence and clarity on these difficult topics renders them accessible to all who read this book. In addition, the humour which peeks back at us from such serious discussions is remarkably refreshing.

Dr. Adair also involves us at the end of the book by sharing the correspondence he exchanged with various religious leaders. It is at time entertaining, poetic, moving, and at all times exceedingly courteous. Being an American now, the latter may have been the greater source of glee for me.

The concept of consciousness as a dimension is very attractive.

Best of all, I feel I can understand and explain quantum physics now. And so will everyone who reads The Numinous Legacy.

This book is not for the casual reader.

Since Copernicus proved the earth revolves around the sun, rather than the sun revolving around the earth, the Christian church has struggled to justify religious convictions in light of the findings of science.
It hasn't been easy. Publication of the findings of Copernicus included an inserted anonymous preface terming his work as hypothetical, despite the fact that Copernicus dedicated the book to the pope. Later scholars who built upon his work were persecuted and killed.

Copernicus' findings refuted the then-accepted belief of crystal-like spheres surrounding the earth with layers for sun, moon and stars, and, ultimately, heaven. Suddenly, mankind was not at the center of the universe, throwing many fundamentalist Christian beliefs into a tailspin.

In the 20th century, the findings of Albert Einstein became the foundation of many theories, some of which have been proven, at least under certain conditions, and many which remain conjectural but are given considerable credence. The later include theories about additional dimensions, elasticity of time, and extraterrestrial life, to name just a few of the conjectures.

That is not to mention Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.

The conflict of science with religion is natural, science being fact-driven while religion is a matter of faith.

Butchins is largely successful in resolving the conflict. Though certain fundamentalist beliefs are refuted, he leaves room for modification, thanks in large part to the reputedly simplified accounts of the Bible, especially in the first few chapters of Genesis. While he continually returns to the concept of deism, he consistently allows for the possibility of an active creator God.

Similarly, he explores scientific theories, which could allow for resurrection of the dead, though he is sceptical of such an emulation.

He indicates that belief in God is not an unreasonable position to take. He appears open to the view of intellectual William B. Drees, who holds that God's primary location is the present, but that that does not make Him identical with the present. Drees attributes three components to God: transcendence and immanence; the locus of values and possibilities; and the source of actuality.

Butchins has digested a number of religious problems in the light of both scientific facts and theories, including anti-matter, germs, near-death experiences, UFOs, and a host of other lesser and greater issues.

The responses in the back of the book, from various religious authorities, are an appreciated inclusion, demonstrating that the bulk of scientific theories and facts, including the possibility of life on other planets, is not necessarily in conflict with monotheistic Christian, Jewish and Islamic theology. Lack of conflict with polytheistic and agnostic Eastern beliefs almost goes without saying.

Most interesting is the comment of Rabbi Dr. John Rayner, rabbi emeritus of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue in London: "Do we have to reject the concept of man as 'the Crown of Creation'? No, we only have to add: in the corner of the universe that we inhabit."

Unfortunately, many evangelical Protestant lines of thought, such as Baptist, Assembly of God, and Nazarene doctrines, are not represented.

Butchins is to be particularly commended for his talent in breaking down complicated scientific and theological concepts to a level which can be understood by the reasonably intelligent reader.

Still, certain Christians might be better served by not reading The Numinous Legacy. After all, even Butchins allows that faith is a highly personal experience.
