                Book Description

This text, designed for beginning students of stellar physics, introduces the fundamentals of stellar structure and evolution. In emphasizing the general picture of the life cycles of stars and the physics responsible, it also allows prospective specialists a taste of many of the detailed aspects of this mature discipline. The authors develop a solid foundation in important theory that is often overlooked in typical courses, yet steer clear of extraneous intensive mathematics and physics. Topics include nuclear physics and stellar energy sources, the equation of state of stellar material, phenomenological approaches to convection, and modern numerical techniques for computation of stellar evolution. Keeping pace with recent developments, the authors incorporate important elements such as asteroseismology, and the effects of rotation and magnetic fields. The text contains the source code for two useful programs, ZAMS (for constructing chemically homogeneous zero-age main sequence models) and PULS (to study the seismological properties of the ZAMS models). Some chapters include exercises. The diskette can be used on any computer with a FORTRAN compiler.

                4 out of 5 stars A star's lifetime.......2004-07-30

What happens in the lifetime of a star? This basically is the subject of the book. It describes from basic physical principles where ever possible how a star is formed and how it burns. Kippenhahn shows how inside a star, the gravitational pressure is necessarily balanced by the outgoing radiation and matter pressure.

We see the cycle of how a star burns its hydrogen, synthesising helium in the process. Then, how heavier elements are formed. Finally, whether a star novas or not, depending on its mass.

The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is shown as a concise way to describe the lifecycle trajectory of a star, over billions of years.

                Well suited for physics students.

                Book Description

Using fundamental physics, the theory of stellar structure and evolution is able to predict how stars are born, how their complex internal structure changes, what nuclear fuel they burn, and their ultimate fate. This undergraduate textbook provides a clear, methodical introduction to the theory of stellar structure and evolution. Starting from general principles and axioms, step-by-step coverage leads students to a global, comprehensive understanding of the subject. Throughout, the book uniquely places emphasis on the basic physical principles governing stellar structure and evolution. All processes are explained in clear and simple terms with all the necessary mathematics included. Exercises and their full solutions allow students to test their understanding. This book requires only a basic background in physics and mathematics and assumes no prior knowledge of astronomy. It provides a stimulating introduction for undergraduates in astronomy, physics, planetary science and applied mathematics taking a course on the physics of stars.

                3 out of 5 stars alright........2006-11-06

the book is alright, the 2nd half is just qualitative discussion, most of which you've proabably already heard. the first half is the best, gives all of the equations of stellar structure, but has some really annoying convensions -- it's in MKS units, and it denotes luminosity by 'F' which really threw me off at first. hmmm, the conversation is a little uninspiring too...

4 out of 5 stars Nice book that cover a lot of topics.......2006-10-19

This is a nice book that covers a lot of astrophysical concepts. The level of detail is fair for a first introduction into the subject and the style is easy to follow. However, the different topics are introduced one after the other without a clear motivation. This makes the book a bit confusing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners.......2004-05-16

A truly excellent introductory book. It has worked problems at the back and actually has an index that allows you to find anything you need for reference. I actually used this book more than Padmanabhan's books for my graduate course, because Prialnik explains things very well.

This book should be the basis of any undergraduate stellar astrophysics course.

                  Product Description

What are black holes? They may be bridges into other universes or pathways into the past or future. They infinitely warp space and time, allowing nothing to escape: not matter, not even light. They are stellar corpses that have crushed themselves into oblivion, seemingly suspending the traditional laws of physics. The Big bang may have peppered the universe with primordial black holes, as small as protons but as massive as mountains. The universe itself may be disappearing into the final black hole. Black holes (BHs) and their warping effect on spacetime are described, beginning with a discussion on stellar evolution that includes white dwarfs, supernovas and neutron stars. The structure of static, rotating, and electrically charged BHs are considered, as well as the general theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, the Einstein-Rosen bridge, and wormholes in spacetime. Attention is also given to gravitational lenses, various space geometries, quasars, Seyfert galaxies, supermassive black holes, the evaporation and particle emission of BHs, and primordial BHs, including their temperature and lifetime. The author's engrossing, non-technical explanations are enhanced by numerous illustrations.

                      Book Description

Recent advances in our understanding of instabilities in galactic type systems have led to an unravelling of some of the mysteries of what determines the form galaxies take. This book focuses on the mathematical development of the subject, assuming no prior knowledge of it, with a strong emphasis on the underlying physical interpretation. This framework is used to discuss the most relevant instabilities which are believed to be closely involved in the way galaxies are formed, in a model independent manner. The relevant observed properties of galaxies that may be used to establish the role of these physical mechanisms are discussed.
The book also includes a chapter discussing numerical simulation techniques, with attention paid to their limitations and to recent advances in this approach. It is demonstrated that recent developments in computer hardware enable a detailed comparison of simulations with analysis. Thus the simulations extend our physical understanding beyond the limitations of the analysis.
The book is intended for use by postgraduate students and researchers in the areas of cosmology, extragalactic astronomy and dynamics.

                                    3 out of 5 stars Review.......2002-12-08

Buyers should be aware that this is a preliminary edition. Although the body of the text is finished, photos and end of chapter problems are not. The former are entirely absent, though there are notes of what photos will appear in the final edition. The latter are partially complete; there are about 15-20 problems at the end of each chapter with notes saying more will be added.

The text reads very well and is organized logically, but is rather uninviting in its layout and visual presentation. It seems to be structured under the assumption that students will read each chapter in full. Even though there are chapter summaries, it is very difficult to pick out important information by skimming the text. Wait for the final edition if this is to be the sole text from which you learn or teach physics.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Approach!.......1999-01-12

This text was required for one of my college courses, but it was a great buy. I have taken various physics courses and read many different physics texts, but Knight's approach is the best by far. He emphasizes the concepts first before getting into the number and formula crunching. The student comes away understanding the underlying principles instead of a head full of meaningless formulas. I highly recommend this text.

                                                        Book Description

For the last two hundred years the notion of equality under the law has been one of the theoretical underpinnings of the democratic state. Yet it remains an unfulfilled aspiration amid legal systems which award those with wealth, knowledge and stamina and excludes those unable to pay for lawyers. This book is about why and how states should subsidize legal sevices for their citizens. What contribution has socio-legal scholarship made to the debate about this issue? Its best known contribution is in providing empirical data to underpin social policy. It is also able to raise fundamental questions so often ignored in the immediacy of policy debates. Why should the state provide legal aid? Why do states develop legal aid schemes? And who do they benefit? Answering these questions involves drawing on a wide range of sources. The readings included in this book consider the philosophical issues, the sociological questions raised by the development of legal aid of different advanced capitalist economies and the social policy issues such as the present crisis in legal aid.

                                                        Book Description

Resourcing Humans is a sexcapade-laden laugher about Y2K NASDAQ spikes up in the pockets of those in the know and down in those down low. A rogue human resources employee battles an organizational chart of lunacy allied with annoying recruiting vendors and bottles of cognac, in pursuit of an escape from the maze of cubicles and the prison of the heart on a quest to kill the liver. What lies behind the scenes of CEOs pleading the fifth at congressional hearings is the front line of regular business days at a NASDAQ 100 company in the tumultuous trading year of 2000. A search for the one resource employed humans need, twisted acts of romance, business class flights, drug induced happiness, self-loathing, hangovers and conference calls while stuck in the hive of the Telecom Corridor at the turn of the century. A complex, bonkers, cynical look at what is often wrong with the hierarchy of many companies

This book was a poorly written one. Yes, it might be about Mark Johnson and what he does for a NADAQ 100 company with an supposable inside look into the company, but he last three chapters make absolutely no sense at all. They have nothing to do with what is going on. It's just a bunch of babble. Robert has a lot of growing to do for someone in their 30's. This book was something that a boy hitting puberty would write.
Like Robert said in his own review. 'If you don't like you can buy me a beer.' Short version of it. Well put it this way, I'm glad I found this book in a used book store. I feel sorry for anyone who actually paid full price. By the way Robert, you owe me about three cases of beer for actually reading this crap. I'll take it in Bud Lite.

Resourcing Humans, is an out of the ordinary book. One that will stick in your mind as you search with Mr. Johnson on his personal quest for truth and justice in a world of business suits and rules. Mr. Williams' book will leave enthused etchings in your mind.
