        Book Description

Environmental Regulation through Financial Organisations examines in the industrialised nations the emerging role of banks, insurers and institutional investors as organisations for articulating and strengthening environmental law and policy. Taking a comparative perspective of practice in the European Union, North America, Japan and Australasia, the book argues that existing legal reforms to promote sustainable development are unlikely to be successful unless environmental policy can be diffused and embedded in the financial services sector. This sector plays a crucial role in creating the financial conditions that allow much economic development to proceed. Financial markets are already highly regulated in pursuance of various public policy objectives, and there is scope to adapt existing regulation to incorporate environmental aspects into the financial services sector. In terms of specific reforms, the book focuses on the role of corporate environmental reporting, economic instruments and liability rules to provide a proper context for engaging financial organisations with the environment, as well as reforms to the system of prudential regulation that currently governs this sector. Beyond the focus on the financial services sector, the book raises complex questions regarding the relationship between the state and market institutions in environmental policy, and will appeal to scholars from a wide range of disciplines interested in problems of environmental governance.

        Book Description

From the second-century celestial models of Ptolemy to modern-day research institutes and quantum theory, this classic book offers a breathtaking tour of astronomy and the brilliant, eccentric personalities who have shaped it. From the first time mankind had an inkling of the vast space that surrounds us, those who study the universe have had to struggle against political and religious preconceptions. They have included some of the most charismatic, courageous, and idiosyncratic thinkers of all time. In Coming of Age in the Milky Way, Timothy Ferris uses his unique blend of rigorous research and captivating narrative skill to draw us into the lives and minds of these extraordinary figures, creating a landmark work of scientific history.

Excellent chronology of physics from Aristotle to the present. I will use it as a reference. Excellent index and other aids to finding what you want in physics and other sciences.

        5 out of 5 stars "Cosmic".......2006-11-22

What a story! And yes, I said story because the author has taken subjects most of us take for granted (the size of the heavens, the age of the Earth, the intricacies of the atom) and turned these into a wonderful almost joyous tale of intellectual achievement. I am still stunned at the depth of scholarship, the vast research and the almost magical manner in which Ferris manages to make what appears to be an arcane dry topic into an intriguing saga.

Ok, I admit it. I love science books written for the educated layman - from "The Singularity is Near " to "Wonderful Life" to the philosophical tomes of Pagels and Hardison. But this is more than science - it is also a history of who we are and our physical, mental and dare I say it, spiritual evolution. In this sense it reminds one of "The Discoverers" by Boorstin with its chronological structure, emphasis upon individual genius and captivating storyline. Beginning with the ancients, we see how our ideas fashion our intellectual quests. The overwhelming success of Western culture depended on our ability to break with age-old traditions, to absorb ideas from the outside and most importantly, to challenge the traditional religious beliefs. Very few cultures have been able to accomplish this and their lack of scientific prowess is evidence.

The individual tales could occupy a volume themselves - mind-boggling examples of thought that are so rare we have trouble believing them. Not only are Darwin (Evolution challenged the prevailing age of the Earth) and Newton (the greatest human who ever lived?) are found but all the unknown heroes of the ages are given their due. The author has an uncanny way of simplifying tremendously dense concepts into language for the layman. This was never truer than his discussion on the weird world of quantum physics with its seemingly magical and nonsensical qualities. I would say that this should be required reading for all high school graduates except that a vast number would be bewildered by the concepts presented, unaware that science has a history of more than video games and cars. My grade - A+++

An Excellent exposition of the history of astronomy and astrophysics. Mr. Ferris writes with a lucidity and thouroughness not often found in books on this fascinating subject.

5 out of 5 stars Could become one of the classics.......2005-04-29

Timothy Ferris is a well-known and unusually gifted non-fiction writer dealing in astronomy. This book, The Coming of Age in the Milky Way, is the book that earned him his famous name.

The problem with so many non-fiction books dealing in the so-called "hard sciences" is that the fields change so rapidly that the works very quickly become obsolete. One need look no further than Cosmos by Carl Sagan and even A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking to realize how quickly cutting edge theory becomes yesterday's news. This book is different. Coming of Age is a classic that will withstand the obsolescence of many other books because, rather than promulgating unified theories and multi-universe dimensions, it instead takes an historical approach. It is quite literally the human race coming of age in the field of astronomy beginning with the ancient peoples and the first notions of a round earth, through the classic Greek and Arabian astronomers, through the dark ages to Galileo, Copernicus, and Newton; following through with Einstein and finally the quantum-state theories we have today.

Rather than a boring litany of discoveries that one might find in an encyclopedia, Ferris makes his book a rousing discussion of scientists flailing at the unknown and chronicling in detail all the misunderstandings and missteps taken in the drunken, ambling path of cosmic discovery. It's that fallibility in understanding matched with the insatiable curiosity of the human race that makes the work so enlivening and so breathtaking. It becomes impossible not to become entranced with this brotherhood spanning so many ages seeking no more than a deeper understanding of the stars. For many, it will become an historical study in how people think and even why people reach to discover.

For anyone who has never heard of Timothy Ferris, this is a terrific book in which to begin.

More importantly, for the science-fiction fan who becomes impatient with non-fiction material, Coming of Age reads as quickly and as exciting as any well-written novel in the speculative fiction field. Even better, it provides a solid basis of understanding in physics, astronomy, cosmology, and even some philosophy by the end of the book. Because it's historical, it treats much more the mentality of discovery and tracing the paths of the human race than trying to commit to future theories and, as such, should earn a place in the historical annals many decades from today just as Herodotus and Thucydides are still read today as studies in classical history. It is the one non-fiction book that any strong adherent of science-fiction must read in order to bring new life to their own curiosity and imagination while grounding them firmly in reality.

This book describes the techniques used by volcanologists to successfully predict several recent volcanic eruptions by combining information from various scientific disciplines, including geodetic techniques. Many recent developments in the use of state-of-the-art and emerging techniques, including Global Positioning System and Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry, mean that most books on volcanology are out of date, and this book will include chapters devoted entirely to these two techniques.

                                      Book Description

The ability of U.S. car enthusiasts to satisfy their need for speed changed dramatically in the late 1940s as car-crazy veterans returned home from World War II with formal mechanical training, courtesy of Uncle Sam. This is the story of how one such veteran, an exB-17 airman named Alex Xydias, established the SO-CAL Speed Shop and helped transform hot rodding from a scruffy, underground, outlaw sport into a defining part of postwar American culture. SO-CAL racers dominated early salt flats racing and the shops products became must-have performance parts, giving SO-CAL international name recognition. This book traces the path Xydias took to develop performance parts, build winning race teams, and become a leader in the early days of hot rod history. Accompanying author Mark Christensens compelling narrative about Xydias and nascent hot rod culture are period photos from notable personal archives, as well as new color images of classic SO-CAL hot rods.

There is little question that this book's subject, the hot-rod culture of the early 1950s, shaped the lives of many a baby boomer. If you are a fan of hot rods, custom cars, drag racing, or American muscle cars, even one too young to have experienced that time in American history, this book is a delightful chronicle of the early-postwar period in the car hobby. To read this book is to understand an important part of the ancestry of cars like the Chevrolet Corvette, Pontiac GTO or the Dodge Charger because, had it not been for the hot rodders of the So-Cal Speed Shop period, the Corvette might have never made it past the 1955 model year and the GTO and the Charger might never have been.

In Fall of 1946, on the day he was discharged from the Army Air Force, Alex Xydias, former B-29 mechanic, hot rodder and entrapneurial spirit, opened what was then a new kind of business, a "speed shop" where car enthusiasts could purchase aftermarket performance parts for their hot rods. Xydias' "So-Cal Speedshop" was not the first to sell parts to rodders and racers but it pioneered some business practices the performance aftermarket still uses today. Xydias was also the first to see the value of using professional race team, with well-built cars, sharp looking crews and winning achievements to market the So-Cal Speedshop's products, enhance its reputation and attract national attention to hot rodding as a business and a credible motorsport. The So-Cal racing team, headlined for a time by the famed "So-Cal Speedshop Special" streamliner, set countless records and was on the cover of Hot Rod magazine five times between 1950 to 1953.

The original So-Cal Speedshop closed in 1961 but, in it's 15 years, it had a phenomenal influence on the hot rod movement. Mark Christensen's SO-CAL Speed Shop is a book, rich in imagery, both actual pictures and what perception Christensen's prose creates with the reader. It explains in what it was like to have been a hot rod enthusiasts, dry lakes racer and Bonneville competitor in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The reader is left with a clear understanding of the events which drove some of the circumstances by which the Corvette, as we know it today-a high-performance sports car powered by the most powerful production V8 engine in any car in its class-came to be.

I really enjoyed reading this book! SO-CAL Speed Shop is a great read and belongs in the book collection of any Corvette enthusiast who wants to both correctly understand the car's ancestry and enjoy a story about a wonderful time in the car hobby.

                                      Book Description

10 Foolish Fortune Hunters begins on the day Cal was busted for growing half a million dollars worth of marijuana in 1984. While she's standing at the window waiting for the police car that's going to take her to jail, time stops and the reader is taken back to the day she and fellow growers vowed to live in peaceful fellowship and never cultivate just for the sake of making money. During the ensuing five years those vows collapse like a house of cards while she poaches from poachers, lies to liars, and swindles swindlers. Knives, guns, threats, broken contracts, rattlesnakes, and rats are part of the drama. She forms several nefarious partnerships--with an aikido teacher, a former prostitute from Starlight Ranch, the owner of a Mexican restaurant, a former 49er football player, an embezzler, and an airplane pilot. Each succeeding season she plants more marijuana and finds herself deeper in trouble. Then she meets the espresso cafe owner, Wing, a Buddhist who teaches her we can master the art of camouflage so well we become a mystery to ourselves. Wing writes his speeches for the day on cafe napkins, enlightening us on such topics as why the cafe is the best part of culture, the secret of the fountain of youth, the driving force behind the DNA code, alpha versus beta brain waves, and why it is we prefer myths rather than genuine reality. His speeches trace the history of words back to the first shaman, revealing the hypnotic power words have over us and how they prevent us from discovering the basic sanity that resides at the still center of the storm.

10 Foolish Fortune Hunters is a fancy-wrought breath of fresh air. Light in tone and illuminating in content, this autobiographical novel of a counter culture outlaw transcends the social differences that divide by exploring the hypnotic power of words and money. Cal's search for a story to write about adventurous women who don't die at the end turns into its own unique adventure and a tightrope walker's exploration of the fine, flexible line between imagination and reality.

I was happily surprised to find this was not your stereotypical story about hippies. The characters were all unique and there were surprises at every turn.I couldn't put it down, read the whole thing over the weekend. Now that I've read this very funny book I understand why the author calls it a "true tale". I highly recommend this book to parents to give as gifts to their teenagers. This is the first thime I've bothered to write a review, but I believe this book deserves applause.

An anthology of horror tales set in the geologically unstable LA area. 12 stories of terror and magic realism by: * Michael Scott Bricker * Denise Dumars * Lisa Morton * Dana Vander Els * Jak Koke * James Van Pelt * Brian Hodge * Nancy Holder * Christa Faust * Stephen Woodworth * Robert Guffey * Michael Frounfelter "Modern horror is almost always informed by place and setting. Lovecraft's New England was more memorable than any of his characters. King's small towns... Campbell's aging, industrial England... Brite's decadent South... Sallee's nightmare visions of Chicago... Lansdale's twisted Texas... The list is endless. As disparate as the above writers are, they all manage to create a recognizable place and time. Places that their real life denizens recognize - places that are both comfortingly familiar and terrifyingly unique. King's New England will never be mistaken for Lovecraft's. This is the magic of modern horror. It creates worlds that we recognize. At the same time these worlds are horribly and terrifyingly different from the one we choose to interact with on a daily basis. Horrible because they speak truths we rarely acknowledge. Terrifying because just maybe they are more real than the artificially constructed realities we choose to live in each day..." "...highly charged, bizarre, a bit fractured, and unsettling in the right kind of way. After Shocks is a solid anthology with a well-executed sense of the locale." - Fiona Webster, Horror Garage

NOt Really any "horror" - like I'm used to, anyway. I prefer rough, fast and hard horror. These are more like disturbing stories. A few might be classified as horror, but not what you'd expect.

                                          Book Description

The world has two faces. The natural and the supernatural. The face we see every day, people filing past us in an almost zombie-like stupor, numb to the horrors of everyday life or driven to madness by the pain and agony of modern-day existence. And those are the people who aren't zombies or monsters! Cal McDonald is a detective with one foot in the real world, and one in the world of magic. For Cal, the horrors we all dream about in the fevered darkness of the night are all too real, kept at bay through an almost constant influx of drugs to numb the pain, but never erase it. Cut from the same mold as Sam Spade, Jake Gittes, and the famous detectives of Chandler, Hammett, and Spillane, Cal McDonald, whether he likes it or not, is all that stands between us and the nightmare world just outside our vision.

                                                Book Description

Imagine you are a witness to the Battle of Hastings in 1066, or aboard The Mayflower as it leaves England for America. Or, perhaps you are among the Minutemen at Lexington and Concord, or present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Or, you are among the victors at Big Round Top, surveying the Gettysburg Battlefield, or on the beach at Iwo Jima, suddenly confronted by withering Japanese gunfire. Or, you are with an in-flight refueling aircrew over the north Atlantic during the Cold War. These are experiences of individuals known as The Wayfarers. They are members of an extended family line, an American family, and the stories are a blend of fact and fiction. Where fragments of information are available, they are used. To that extent, the stories are biographical. But, beyond that, they are fiction. To the fragments of known information are blended figments of imagination and stories result. They are intended to be representative of all who qualify as Wayfarers. By telling of some, tribute is paid to all. Join the Wayfarers in the journey through time. Enjoy the experiences of a family progenitor in 900 AD, a Norwegian Viking ashore in Scotland. Visit colonial New England. Experience the Indian wars of the 1600s, the turbulence of the American Revolution and the shock of Civil War battles. Sail on a whaler in the vast North Pacific in the 1850s. Travel on the transcontinental railroad just two months after its completion in 1869, by steamship to Ireland and England in 1884, by auto on the Old National Road in 1919, and to Europe again by sea in 1929. Come, join the journey of the Wayfarers.

What a wonderful way to start a child on the path of imagination.

Perhaps the best thing about *The Great Kettles* is that, though the story is fun and fanciful, it's not necessary. It's so much more rewarding to let a child look at the illustrations and create his or her own story. And not only children--I've found great inspiration in the colorful and detailed illustrations that grace every page.

Dean Morrissey's books should be on every child's bedside table.

"The Great Kettles" has become one of my all time favorite books. The story is compelling for adults and children. The illustrations are so realistic, rich and engrossing that I wish I could have some of them as framed posters in my home. I love the book so much I am giving it to several friends, young and not so young as gifts this holiday season.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Bedtime Story!.......1997-09-28

"The Great Kettles" is a wonderful story for children of all ages. Mr Morrissey is a very talented artist as well as a gifted story teller. His stories aren't violent or evil in any way. Joey gets himself into another predicament and is again helped by everyones favorite fantasy figures. Such as Father Time, Mother Nature, and once again his old friend the Sandman, among others. The paintings included in this story are every bit as wonderful as those in Morrisseys first book, this is a perfect follow up to that book, "Ship of Dreams". I am eagerly awaiting the next story in this series. Where will he take us next?
