3 out of 5 stars Was good, now outdated.......2006-12-20

This was a good book in 2001, but it's now getting dated. Still you can get lots of good information from it. It's a big book and has lots and lots of detail if your style is to learn yourself. I've turned to my accountant because I don't want to be a walking knowlege base, but this book is really good.

5 out of 5 stars My own little loophole manual.......2004-08-18

Thank you, Jeffrey Scheppner, for giving us a level playing field when it comes to taxes!

Every tax law, loophole, and trap is spelled out in easy to understand English--even for non-rocket-scientists like myself.

I get his manual every year, and have not missed or misused a loophole yet!

1 out of 5 stars Why look for a Tax break? When there is No income tax.......2004-04-03

There is no law to make a person liable to pay income tax. No one has put forth the research and "know in your heart it's the truth" information like Irwin Schiff's - "The Federal Mafia"

I personally have not paid income tax in over 8 years. I received one letter from the IRS to which I replied and informed them that I did not pay taxes for the years in question because I am under no obligation to do so (I included other statements with knowledge I gained from this amazing book.) I have never heard from them again & I never have had an IRS agaent come to my house. Don't let the IRS use their scare tatics to steal your hard-earned money, illegally seize your propery, and bank accounts. Ignornance of the average American is what they prey upon. Get the knowledge to See The Light.

Mr Schiff's book will greatly change your opinions of our Government. (NOT THE BOOK THIS REVIEW IS WRITTEN UNDER)
I highly recommed all of Irwin Schiff's books. Extremely imformative / easy to follow / and above all undoubtely proves that there is No Income Tax.

The IRS - "The greatest organized crime outfit of all time."

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat Helpful But Misses the More Important Point.......2003-10-06

A really good tax book would tell you how complicated and unfair the current system really is. It would tell you that the current system costs Americans hundreds of billions of dollars annually in man hours for compliance and makes a parasitic class of politicians, lobbyists, lawyers and tax accountants quite rich. It is no wonder that books like this don't tell you any of that then is it? Instead of jumping through all kinds of hoops and frantically arranging your affairs to suit the taxing authorities why don't we demand a simplified system that puts all of these leaches out of work and puts our wealth to work creating jobs that make working people better off?

A book like this may be useful under the current system, but, there is the danger that it will keep you so busy chasing deductions and exemptions that you will forget what the real problem is.

3 out of 5 stars This is a good book...BUT there are better ones available.......2003-01-30

Being a CPA and attorney,I am a saavy financial person and read a lot of tax and financial books.

How To Pay Zero Tax has been out for quite a while and is actually one of the first tax planning books that I have read. It is fairly comprehensive and actually better than most of the tax planning books out there. However, there are two main problems with it though for the average reader.

First, it is literally much too much. It has over 600 pages and some of it isn't clear. Mr.Schnepper tries to be all things to all people, which doesn't really succeed. I guess a point in all directions is a circle. In fact, despite its length, some of the discussion on topics tends to be too brief.

The second problem that has been noted by other reviewers is that this book hasn't be kept up to date. I guess Mr. Schnepper is "resting on his laurals."

Let me be clear about this: it's not that I disliked this book. It is just that there are a number of other, more up to date and better written tax books that I would recommend instead such as Lower Your Taxes: BIG TIME by a Mr. Botkin.

Plenty of books try to explain the origin of the universe, but despite the ascendance of the Big Bang theory, numerous details of that theory remain in flux as new observations are made and new hypotheses formed (and then confirmed or rejected). Timothy Ferris's The Whole Shebang is an up-to-date account of the various mechanisms believed to have contributed to the universe as we now know it, from the Big Bang itself to inflation to superstrings. The Whole Shebang eschews mathematics and formulae and explains cosmological concepts in clear and enticing prose. If you need an update on the state of the universe, you'll find it here.

      Book Description

From the world-acclaimed author of Coming of Age in the Milky Way comes this delightfully engrossing, comprehensive, and comprehensible report on how science today envisions the universe as a whole.

Timothy Ferris begins The Whole Shebang with a succinct account of how we have come to know what we know about the universe. Then he explains the meaning behind the exciting new developments that have put cosmology in the headlines -- including the discovery of planets orbiting stars other than our sun, glimpses through the Hubble Space Telescope of how the universe looked when it was only a fraction of its present age, and the detection of structure in relic radiation from the big bang that may hint at the mechanisms of genesis.

Ferris provides a lucid, nontechnical overview of current research and a forecast of where cosmological theory is likely to go in the twenty-first century. A master analogist, he presents accessible explanations of relativity and quantum physics, "inflationary" models indicating that the universe is much larger than had been thought, and "string" theories that portray all matter as made of space.

The centerpiece of The Whole Shebang is a visionary account of near-future science, in which light is shed on the possibility that our universe is one among many universes, each with different physical laws and differing prospects for the emergence of life.

The Whole Shebang explores questions that have occurred to even casual readers who are curious about nature on the largest scales: What does it mean to say that the universe is "expanding," or that space is "curved"? How could there have been an "origin" of the universe; what happened "before"? Why is quantum uncertainty so puzzling to many scientists, and why do some regard it as one of the

Written with the literary flair that earned Ferris the accolade "the greatest science writer in the world," The Whole Shebang interweaves probing scientific explication, lyrical descriptions, and finely honed profiles of the lives and personalities of the scientists and philosophers who have contributed to human understanding of the cosmos. Above all, it demonstrates that for all its abstractions, cosmology -- the scientific study of the universe as a whole -- is a very human activity whose theories and observations must ultimately answer to the human mind.

4 out of 5 stars Is Omega 1?.......2007-01-06

This is a book on cosmology: the study of the universe, the speculation on its direction and future, what we know and how we know it. Ferris gives us helpful analogies. Well written, good style. Journey through this mind warp; you will shake your head in amazement.

Tim starts with the early thinkers: Aristotle and Eudoxus. He then moves to the obvious: the big bang, origins and creation. He discusses: a collapsing universe, redshifts, distances and ages of stars--the different methods of measuring, shape and makeup of galaxies and the universe, structure of space, and black holes. He ends with prose on the future, the possibility of e.t. life, and God.

Could there be multiple universes or infinite regression? What is dark matter?--what may be 99% of the rest of the universe. Can inflation change rate of expansion? Is the universe isotropic? Enter the weirdness of quantum physics. There are many paradoxes. Tim was doing good until he brought in the theory of cosmic evolution, especially organic. He does caution to what evolution means.

He is an evolutionist--stuck in his faith (which he admits to); and this leads to materialism, relativism and humanism. He will eventually turn full circle--to creation. Timothy finds himself in the same trap he tries to build for creationists. A big mistake is made in thinking that religion and science are not compatible. "The secular explanation also assumes that stars and galaxies can form from regions of high density. But this has never been observed. No galaxy has ever been observed to form at all." What of the second law of thermodynamics? Some knowledge will be left to the unknown--as secrets.

"The big bang today relies on a growing number of hypothetical entities, things that we have never observed--inflation, dark matter and dark energy are the most prominent examples. Without them, there would be a fatal contradiction between the observations made by astronomers and the predictions of the big bang theory. In no other field of physics would this continual recourse to new hypothetical objects be accepted as a way of bridging the gap between theory and observation. It would, at the least, raise serious questions about the validity of the underlying theory." [...]

      4 out of 5 stars good overview.......2006-09-19

A very good overview of the current state of cosmology (even if now almost a decade old). The author though puts his philosphy into a number of parts of the book - which can be quite frustrating at times (hence 4 stars and not 5). If you can walk through these or are of similar mindset this book is a very good place to start your education into cosmolgy. It has a very good index, glossary of terms and references at the back of the book, it is just a shame did not also include a list of books to read in short section at the end - rather than having to go through the references. But on the whole recommended.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best cosmology books I've ever read.......2005-06-14

Every year I read about 5 books about cosmology and physics. So I know what I'm saying: this book really is great.

Sure, it's about 8 years old, too old in cosmology. In particular, the discovery that the universe is accelerating has changed a lot of the questions that cosmologists contemplate. But even if you read a book that was published yesterday, it'll be out of date next month. So you have to either hang out in the physics lounge at Princeton, or accept that you're gonna be behind a bit. As it goes, I think that this book is so good that it's certainly worth reading even though it's a bit old.

I especially recommend this book if it will be your first book on cosmology.

I bought it because of the discussion of the structure in the universe: superclusters of galaxies, and beyond them to the sheets and bubbles that seem to be the largest structures in the universe. I'd been curious about these things, and never read a good account of them until this book. He covered it all, including reviewing our local intergalactic neighborhood, the Virgo cluster and supercluster, and the mysterious Great Attractor. He discussed the formations of galaxies and stars and planetary systems, including our own solar system. Not since Sagan's "Cosmos" had I read such an enjoyable discussion of this topic--the one that fascinated me so much as a child.

      That's high praise.

But I was also surprised by how well other things in cosmology were explained. Of course the question of the geometry of the universe was well explained; even better, the discussions of inflation and Linde's chaotic inlation and multiverse were great. The issue of dark matter was very well covered. Relativity was explained well enough, and the world of quantum physics was explored enough to make the points Ferris wanted to make. (He didn't explain Smolin's black hole based multiverse, probably because it's a lot more speculative than Linde's inflationary multiverse.)

Every pop science writer has to simplify things, and at some point offer explanations that someone will consider inadequate. I thought his discussion of the principles of life on earth and the possibilities of extraterrestrial life were great, but they were probably a bit too brief for someone completely unfamiliar with the topic. I think a first-time reader would not understand several points in his description of quantum theory. But hey, when you're sure you don't understand quantum theory, that's evidently about as close as you'll ever get.

The same goes for his discussion of the anthropic principle and God. Now, actually I basically agree with Ferris' worldview (strong agnosticism), and I think his discussion of it was spot-on. But if I had to write it, I would have gone a bit more slowly, explaining things in a bit more detail. You can find among these reviewers some who criticize Ferris for saying that cosmology doesn't prove God's existence. Well, it doesn't. Ferris also explained that it doesn't disprove God's existence. But Ferris doesn't flatter theists as much as some other writers in the field.

All the same, the general discussion about the universe was great.

Incidently, if you're primarily interested in quantum physics rather than cosmology in particular, I recommend Brian Greene's "The Elegant Universe." Not so well-written, but in greater depth is Nick Herbert's "Quantum Reality." If you're primarily interested in multiple universes, look at Smolin's "Life of the Cosmos" but especially at Guth's "The Inflationary Universe." And if you're interested in the end of the universe, I suggest Davies' "Last Three Minutes." And finally, although it's a bit dated in some respects, the best exploration of the theological implications of cosmology (which bothered some reviewers of this book so much) remains Paul Davies' "God and the New Physics."

If you haven't read about cosmology yet, get one of these books and enjoy it. Regardless of which one you choose, scientific cosmology is one of the most fascinating, mind and soul expanding topics in the world.

4 out of 5 stars The Book of the UNIVERSE.......2003-06-28

Now there is a plenty of the books of the authors of every possible calibers from various schools and predecessors. All of them are good in own way.

However offered book is laborious work of the author giving to generalize and to inform to us in the form the unique summary of a basis cosmology.

And so it is time to begin to understand with this cosmology. Please, take and read this book. It will be useful both schoolboy, and student, and pensioner.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Book on our Universe.......2003-06-07

This is the most coherent (and in depth) book on the cosmos I have ever read. I have numerous books on "the universe", gravity, astrophysics, physics, etc, but this book is FAR and AWAY the most lucid thing I have ever read on the topic. Generally I like to skip around to certain sections of interest to me but with this book, the WHOLE THING is incredibly fascinating. I also bought the Audio Version (which he reads himself) and it is very well read. If you want to know the fascinating structure and workings of the Universe you live in, THIS IS THE BOOK. I think it is a shame that most people go through their whole lives not knowing how cool this Universe really is. His discussion of Gravity and "the SHAPE of space" is a perfect example. Just read it and you will find out. Things are not always what they seem. An amazing book!

              Book Description

The degradable nature of high-performance, wood-based materials is an attractive advantage when considering environmental factors such as sustainability, recycling, and energy/resource conservation. The Handbook of Wood Chemistry and Wood Composites provides an excellent guide to the latest concepts and technologies in wood chemistry and bio-based composites. The book analyzes the chemical composition and physical properties of wood cellulose and its response to natural processes of degradation. It describes safe and effective chemical modifications to strengthen wood against biological, chemical, and mechanical degradation without using toxic, leachable, or corrosive chemicals. Expert researchers provide insightful analyses of the types of chemical modifications applied to polymer cell walls in wood, emphasizing the mechanisms of reaction involved and resulting changes in performance properties. These include modifications that increase water repellency, fire retardancy, and resistance to ultraviolet light, heat, moisture, mold, and other biological organisms. The text also explores modifications that increase mechanical strength, such as lumen fill, monomer polymer penetration, and plasticization. The Handbook of Wood Chemistry and Wood Composites concludes with the latest applications, such as adhesives, geotextiles, and sorbents, and future trends in the use of wood-based composites in terms of sustainable agriculture, biodegradability and recycling, and economics. Incorporating over 30 years of teaching experience, the esteemed editor of this handbook is well-attuned to educational demands as well as industry standards and research trends.

They have observed about twenty generations of finches -- continuously.
Jonathan Weiner follows these scientists as they watch Darwin's finches and come up with a new understanding of life itself.

                  Book Description

                  Winner of the Pulitzer Prize

On a desert island in the heart of the Galapagos archipelago, where Darwin received his first inklings of the theory of evolution, two scientists, Peter and Rosemary Grant, have spent twenty years proving that Darwin did not know the strength of his own theory.  For among the finches of Daphne Major, natural selection is neither rare nor slow: it is taking place by the hour, and we can watch.

In this dramatic story of groundbreaking scientific research, Jonathan Weiner follows these scientists as they watch Darwin's finches and come up with a new understanding of life itself.   The Beak of the Finch is an elegantly written and compelling masterpiece of theory and explication in the tradition of Stephen Jay Gould.

5 out of 5 stars The Beak of the Finch.......2007-07-16

Brilliant writing and organization shows that evolution can occur in as short a time frame as two years. Never boring. The non-scientist will find this book of our changing world a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful science and a great narrative.......2007-04-14

"Beak" is perhaps the best popular book on evolution between Darwin and Dawkins.

Thoughtful, educated persons must know certain facts about the physical world. One of those facts is evolution. Evolution happens, it is not "just a theory."

As the author explains through the story of the work of Peter and Rosemary Grant, we can see natural selection operate in real time, season by season, in fish, birds, bacteria, and throughout the natural world. The explanation of evolution may be somewhat more open to debate but you can't participate meaningfully in the debate without being armed with some facts.

Don't bring a knife to an intellectual gunfight. Arm yourselves.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on Nature.......2007-02-22

I have read much on evolution, and the evolution controversy in (primarily) the United States. This book does a wonderful job of demonstrating how scientists, right now, are recording and observing natural selection in action. Before I read this book I was not aware of how much information we really have about evolution and natural selection occurring in "the wild" on an everday basis. This book provides thorough mathematical evidence and predictive models of how natural selection changes the morphology of Darwin's Finches on the Galapogos Islands. It interleaves that story with a decent primer on evolution and snippets of other, similar research, going on right now too.

For example, it describes some fasicinating experiments conducted showing how quickly natural selection will change the color of Amazonian guppies based solely on the color of the rocks in the pools in which the guppies live, and the frequency of predation. It is amazing. As I read more about evolution, I see that rates of evolution vary widely. Evolution operating slowly (over 1000's or millions of years) is pretty obvious. This book provides a window into the amazing world of "rapid" evolution.

The best part about it is that it is as much a journalistic endeavor as a well-written book. This is NOT a polemic about why evolution is better than other ideas. This book simply reports the facts. If you don't understand evolution or believe it can be true after reading this book, then you aren't really trying to understand.

Finally, this book deserves the awards and accolades. It is well-written, well-researched, and well-organized. I don't give many books five stars, but this one is worth it. I would recommend it for anyone: scientists, kids, and just people interested in learning and fascinated by the world around us.

If you're only slightly interested in the ways the evolution works, then this is it. But beware to have some knowledge about the basics of evolution before moving on to this book. There's a bit of a steep learning curve when you're not all to familiair with Darwin's brilliant theory. It also gives a nice insight in the way scientists work.
