Book Description

This textbook integrates financial and managerial accounting as opposed to keeping these areas separate, the approach followed by most books and curriculums. By "integration", we mean the authors focus on the business process and examine the activities from both an external, financial reporting perspective and an internal, management decision-making perspective. The text incorporates real world applications, including actual financial statements, to reinforce the relevance of topics to real business situations and promote student interest. The text also promotes active learning through Pause & Reflect "probing" questions placed sporadically throughout each chapter, Of Interest boxes that provide additional information relating to the chapter concepts, new Fast Fact boxes that provide additional information related to chapter concepts in a short, trivia-like manner, and end-of-chapter group exercises.

There are three key distinctions to the Ainsworth/Deines approach. They are: 1. Integration - described in preceding paragraph. 2. Within the context of business processes, Ainsworth/Deines is organized by planning for activities, performing those activities (in other words, capturing them in the financial statements), and finally, evaluating those business activities. 3. An organization around the Statement of Cash Flows first focusing on Operating Activities (what is my business, my product, who are my customers?) and then Financing and Investing Activities (how do I fund my business, how do I expand, what are the financial risks, etc?).

This book falls way short in providing adequate examples and leaves you guessing many times on how to handle cetain scenarios.

5 out of 5 stars Just in time.......2005-09-23

I was to be in college two days after I ordered this book and it showed up in time that I got to take it with me to college instead of my mom having to send it to me from home (about 600 miles away). Thanks y'all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Accounting Book.......2004-12-02

This is a great accounting book for any entry-to-intermidiate-level accounting class. I'd recommend it to anyone who needs good definitions, as well as numerous examples and exercises at the end of each chapter. Due to the volume of the chapters, it is usually taught for 2 semesters.

It would be difficult if used w/o prior knowledge in the accounting field, and w/o an instructor.

You definitely need online access to the additional tests, tables...information.

Hope that helps!

                      Book Description

This remarkable collection contains some of the very best work on themes developed by Hans Kelsen, regarded by many as the most influential legal philosopher of the twentieth century. The volume addresses in rich detail the topic where debate on Kelsen's work has been liveliest: 'normativity' as Kelsen's alternative to both traditional legal positivism and natural law theory. The book boasts a truly international list of contributors, with authors from Europe, North and South America, and Australia - a dozen countries in all.

Like cheap, shiny space suits and bug-eyed rubber monsters, nuclear-powered spaceships today seem like little more than laughably naïve 1950s science fiction tropes. It might have been otherwise--and still could be. George Dyson, son of supergenius physicist Freeman Dyson, wrote Project Orion to share some of his father's amazing research with the world. Much had been kept secret for years, but Dyson's unique insider status permits great depth and breadth on this important tale. Conceived in the wake of Sputnik, Project Orion was a true vision of '50s engineering: a huge 40-person ship powered by hundreds of tiny atomic bombs, capable of much greater lift and efficiency than chemically driven rockets. Struggles between NASA, the military, Congress, and other parties doomed Orion, but Dyson has gathered hundreds of documents and interviewed most of the researchers and engineers who worked together, trying to reach "Saturn by 1970." His knack for storytelling makes the book a quick, delightful read; even the staunchest anti-nuke activist has to admit that lighting a cigarette off a parabolic mirror facing a bomb test is pretty cool. By the end of the 20th century, technology had caught up with the vision of Orion--it's considered one of our best bets for long-distance space transit. Whether or not that could ever happen politically, Project Orion is a compelling exploration of scientific imagination. --Rob Lightner

                        Book Description

n 1957, a small group of scientists, supported by the U.S. government, launched an attempt to build a four-thousand-ton spaceship propelled by nuclear bombs. The initial plan called for missions to Mars by 1965 and Saturn by 1970. After seven years of work, political obstacles brought the effort to a halt. The Orion team, led by the American bomb-designer Theodore B. Taylor, included the physicist Freeman Dyson, whose son George was five years old when the existence of the project was first announced. In Project Orion, George Dyson has synthesized hundreds of hours of interviews and thousands of pages of newly excavated documents, still only partially declassified, to piece together one of the most tantalizing 'what if' stories of the twentieth century.

5 out of 5 stars Orion, Seems Like NASA May Be Thinking Ahead.......2007-01-08

Project Orion was indeed an exciting read. Frankly, I was 65% through Dyson's book right before Space Shuttle Columbia came burning the skies over Texas. I put it down and never opened it again until the past fall as the name Orion triggered that I should not only finish but start the book anew. The researchers of the nuclear-powered spaceship Orion were bold for their time! I recommend this book to anyone who wants to envision the exploration of the solar system by humans. This basic technology brought together in California research lab those several years ago could work today just not on planet Earth. It could work in GEO, cislunar, or translunar to get humans into deep space and back in a reasonable period of time. SO, perhaps, Orion will live again in this century to take humans to Mars, Europa, and Titan. The book was worth the purchase and even if I waited too long to read it. I commend the book to any space advocate, engineer, or anyone who dreams that humans can go beyond the moon sooner rather than later. I especially commend the book to Gen Y-space geeks. This is the next generation spaceship technology, IMHO.

5 out of 5 stars Not that "secret".......2005-10-04

I really enjoyed the book, from both a historical perspective as well as what "might have been".

However it can't have been too "secret" at the time. The 1960 book "Dynamic America" (a history of General Dynamics; parent of General Atomic) says (p 376): "...thousand-ton space platforms propelled by controlled nuclear blasts. But at the Laboratory the possible development of such a vehicle is under serious consideration. Project Orion - whose ultimate purpose is to put any weight anywhere in our solar system - was conceived by General Atomic scientists and is being financed, as a feasibility study, by the Air Research and Development Command of the United States Air Force.

3 out of 5 stars The exciting story about an atomic spaceship.......2004-12-02

In the late 1950's a group of scientists had the idea to travel to mars by 1965, and then later Saturn by 1970.At parts I thought the book had too much detail and others I got into the story line. Many of the terms talked about in the book were too complex for me to understand and other parts were simple and interesting topics. If you are interested in science topics or NASA failures this book should keep you interested. I recommend this book for the young scientists or the average reader. I also recommend that you skim read many chapters because much of the detail is unnecessary.

4 out of 5 stars Point Summary of Proposed Theoretical Adjustments to Orion.......2003-11-17

                        1. It is not a pusher-plate but a type of cannon that should contain the blast. The cannon could be described as a pusher-plate with walls on it, obviously to focus the energy released by the blast. Failing to focus the blast would also destroy many more satellites than is necessary (EPP) and is also very wasteful of the energy release. The number of explosions required to give propulsion would thus be much less.
                        2. The cannon is an ancient device but invented in a remarkable piece of history where the Chinese failed to develop its effective application. Unfortunately the English language does not have an alternative and less warlike term for a hollow tube with one end sealed by a pusher plate. America, the inventor of a new super "gun-powder", the atomic bomb, thus is repeating history by accidentally side-stepping the challenge of physical containment. The pusher-plate concept seeks to avoid the challenge of physical containment, a mistake. It is to be suggested "the inventor of new and overwhelming explosion will fail to develop its most significant application because of an over-whelmed sense of what the challenge of physical containment will involve".
                        3. Orion should never take off from the ground, but would be built in space. It would test the efficiency of our ability to push payload into space, but would limit all tests to outer space orbits and beyond where solar radiation is an existing malignant factor. As such it could be said to be a "green technology" in that malignant radiation releases in space are already a natural occurrence. The test apparatus being non-tether able in such an orbit would require from the very beginning a pilot and massive counter-thrust chemical engines to return the test for inspection.

It should not be assumed that the human being suffers the same intolerance to G force in space in exactly the same proportions as it is experienced on earth until real time data can be gathered. Acceleration is measured as a factor of time squared. Clearly relativity in space may work in our favour and allow travel under more G than is possible than on earth, something required if we were to reach the stars within an economic time period.
                        6. Our world without Project Orion is in danger of dispensing with the only natural theory of the non use of nuclear weapons. If we miss the point that such explosions have an economic potential for use in space, perhaps because we proceeded initially with an alternative theory of non-use so-called "MAD", then we are left at an evolutionary disadvantage. That a weapon is "horrible" is not an adequate theory of non-use, as many wars have inadvertently proved with other new technologies. That its use in war would mean a loss of its economic opportunity and value in space, is a significant deterrent. The Orion Project book by Dyson mentions NASA commenting it would be a useful way to dispose of or to consume fissile material. More than that it is an essential theory of non use of such materials and would hopefully when demand consumption in space increased to a certain level, call upon the dismantling of thermonuclear weapons to free up the atomic cores for use in the profitable area of space propulsion.
                        7. Project Orion once constructed in space, like the first cannons made in many pieces, would have the potential to actually lift or pull heavy objects into space. The bizarre "free energy" idea of the "sky hook" thus has a new and powerful application. If the cannon in orbit were to weigh 500 tonnes it would we might hope be able to lift 20 times its own weight, the dangling sky cables being supported by high altitude weather balloons. The environmental costs of currently pushing payload into space would thus be super ceded forever by a new capability to pull (as in a building site crane or harbour tug) 10,000 tonnes into orbit in one go by firing atomic explosions harmlessly away from earth at an angle to it.
                        8. The number of explosions estimated as needed for interplanetary travel by Orion is far too high. The frictionless, weightlessness of space means that following Newton's F=MA the acceleration would strictly not diminish over any amount of time. However again relativity would likely introduce some gradual diminishment of acceleration over the time period. The expectation of the requirement of one explosion a day in space would not be unreasonable until proven otherwise to maintain acceleration and hence gravity levels. This of course assumes that the pusher-plate has been given some containing walls and is not discharging energy willy-nilly across the heavens.
                        9. Occam's razor theorem highlights the essence of simplicity in invention. By determining to use a cannon/tube/canister rather than a pusher-plate with complicated hydraulics and ejection procedures, we can draw from a near millennium's wealth of experience in the development of the cannon to musket, then rifle. The use of cartridges and their subsequent ejection is likely to provide engineers with more insight on how an interplanetary craft can be efficiently powered, than the noble but essentially misguided attempt by Orioneers to re-write centuries of physical containment into riding shock waves. When it comes to the challenge of physical containment in space, it maybe like testing a light bulb in orbit, but we must face up to the challenge of physical containment in space. This route has seen many hundreds of years of development tests and failures since the dawn of the original gunpowder age. As such it is much more likely to result in ultimate success, rather than by re-inventing the wheel as "square" as the original Project Orion concept has with a "pusher-plate" sought to do.

3 out of 5 stars Poor book saved by amazing subject.......2003-02-27

What was/is amazing about the Orion project is the fact that as far as we can tell it would have worked. By worked, I mean it would have made our current space shuttle and space station projects look like covered wagons in the age of autos. If history had taken just a slightly different direction, we could have had several building size bases on the moon by the early seventies, probably sent manned expeditions to Mars and even beyond by the 80's.

But this book is not a great treatment of the subject. There is a lot of technical discussion but little organization. Characters come and go, various memos are written, and people write techical papers on building two story high shock asorbers. All well and good but what is missing is the real story and a unifying analysis of the project to propel a spaceship by riding atomic detonations.

The author has done a valuable service by bringing this fascination program to our attention. In addition, it is very clear that chemical rockets have serious limitations. Mankind is unlikely to make much movement away from the earth without a revitalized Project Orion.

                          Book Description

Clearly structured, easy to read and optimal to understand, this extensive compendium fills the gap between textbooks devoted to either spectra interpretation or basic physical principles. The original Chinese editions have already sold over 18,500 copies, and the material is taken from the latest literature from around the world, plus technical information provided by the manufacturers of spectroscopic instruments.
Alongside basic methods, Professor Ning presents up-to-date developments in NMR, MS, IR and Raman spectroscopy, such as pulsed-field gradient technique, LC-NMR, and DOSY. He stresses the application of spectroscopic methods, interpreting them in great detail and depth since most of the selected spectra may be applied to practical work, as well as summarizing the rules for their interpretation. He also incorporates his original ideas, including a comparison of the common points in different spectroscopic techniques.
This monograph features a unique structure, a typical example being the discussion of 2D NMR starting from pulse sequence units, which construct various pulse sequences for related 2D NMR. A complete chapter deals with the determination of configurations and conformations of organic compounds and even biological molecules from the viewpoint of spectroscopic methodologies, while one whole section is dedicated to the interpretation of mass spectra produced by soft ionization techniques.
The principles of mass analyzers, especially the ion trap, are discussed in great depth, together with a concise summary of the MS fragmentation and rearrangement of common compounds, allowing readers to easily predict related mass spectrometric reactions. All the three kinds of library retrieval of mass spectra are presented in detail, together with recent developments in molecular vibration spectroscopy. The whole is rounded off with several appendices, including a subject index for rapid reference.

                                      Book Description

An authoritative review of the state of the art in the Nuclear Overhauser Effect-essential information for organic chemists, biochemists, biophysicists, and NMR spectroscopists
The field of NMR spectroscopy has seen tremendous growth in the last twenty years, particularly advances relating to Nuclear Overhauser Effect (NOE) spectroscopy-the most powerful technique for obtaining structural information on molecules in solution. Extensive and engaging, the Second Edition of the leading reference on the NOE is significantly updated to reflect the latest changes and new approaches in the field.
Neuhaus and Williamson provide an essential guide to the complexities and use of the NOE in a readily accessible, straightforward manner. Their practical handbook features a new chapter addressing the use of NOE data to calculate biomolecular structures. Chapters dealing with the kinetics of the NOE, the effects of exchange and internal motion, and applications of the NOE, are also extensively revised. Cross-referenced in remarkable depth, The Nuclear Overhauser Effect is organized into three main parts:
                                      * Part I describes the theory of the Nuclear Overhauser Effect in a clear, comprehensive fashion
                                      * Part II discusses the considerations involved in implementing NOE experiments, including full coverage of all necessary details for both new and established techniques
                                      * Part III offers examples of how the NOE is used, including applications to defining molecular geometry, stereochemistry, conformation, and biomolecular structure and interactions
The Nuclear Overhauser Effect in Structural and Conformational Analysis, Second Edition, uniquely explains the NOE in detail, making it an indispensable resource for the novice as well as the experienced NMR researcher.

                                        Book Description

This book is the revision of a widely-respected book on spectroscopy. The book covers all four areas of organic spectroscopy including NMR, MS, electronic (including CD and optical rotary dispersion), and vibrational (which also includes Raman). The book is the most complete and comprehensive treatment on the subject. It covers currently used techniques for determining the structure of organic and biological compounds. It also has a strong emphasis on problem solving and is distinctly pedagogical. This book is ideal for any practicing or future organic or biochemist.

                                        2 out of 5 stars errors everywhere.......2007-06-27

This is one of the worst spectroscopy books, even by spectroscopy textbook standards. Providing a broad survey of spectroscopic techniques, our class encountered errors all over the book (just like the chemical literature!!). Example problems could have been better selected. I use the book for its tables (IR table, specifically) only. Experience and NMR calculation software will top this book as an aide to the synthetic chemist.

4 out of 5 stars excellent for REFERENCE.......2005-12-03

I used this book as a reference countless times during my graduate years, when I did a lot of IR and some UV-vis spectroscopy. In this capacity it was most useful. It is organized well for this purpose and the charts are comprehensive enough for a wide range of chemical spectra. It is also very helpful when you need a brief explanation of specific chemical shifts and the like.

                                        2 out of 5 stars A so-so book..........1999-08-27

I took a class in organic spectroscopy this year (spring 1999) and this was the primary textbook. My professor skipped some of the chapters and handed out supplementary materials instead. I don't know what was the motive to choose it as a textbook, i guess because it covers all, although superficially. If you are looking for a book on the subject, I suggest finding a few older ones that concentrate on subjects instead of something that wants to be the Holy Grail of Spectroscopy.

I teach the class this book is intended for: graduate level organic spectroscopy. It is a first edition, so there may be a glitch or two here and there, but I have been very pleased with it.

In my opinion, there are no ideal books out there. Either the background/theory is inadequate (e.g., Silverstein), the tables are hardly useful (e.g., Pavia), or there aren't enough problems. On the other extreme are NMR-only books like Gunther's or Schlichter that are beyond the scope of the course. While I personally would like to see more tables than are present in Lambert's book, they are a good start and will do very well for many people.

The book includes very reasonable introductions to a great variety of techniques. The section on ionization in mass spec, for instance, has subsections on LD, SIMS, FAB, MALDI, ESI, TS, and APCI on top of the usual EI and CI methods. In the optical spectroscopy section, there are good introductions to CD and ORD. The chapter on 2D NMR is also much more extensive than typical for these books.

There are 35 "integrated problems" in the back of the book, but I might like to have seen more problems associated with each chapter.

I assign this book with confidence, supplementing it with some tables and home grown problems. As far as I'm concerned, it's the class of the current (1999) lot.

As a student using this as a primary text in a graduate-level spectroscopy course, I found that this first edition text is far from polished and does not surpass the spectroscopy texts curretly avaiable on the market. Errors were found in the text and end-of-chapter problems. The extreme scarcity of worked problems and review questions with answers made it difficult for a student to test his or her grasp of the concepts. There is no study guide. Furthermore, the problems at the end of the chapter often relate poorly to what was stated in the chapter's text. As a result of these shortcomings, I turned to other, more established spectroscopy texts for clearer descriptions and understandable examples. Perhaps later editions will improve upon the first; however, I would advise against buying this text and recommend a more established spectroscopy textbook.

                                          Book Description

Solid state NMR is rapidly emerging as a universally applicable method for the characterization of ordered structures that cannot be studied with solution methods or diffraction techniques. This proceedings -; from a recent international workshop - captures an image of the latest developments and future directions for solid state NMR in biological research, particularly on membrane proteins. Detailed information on how hormones or drugs bind to their membrane receptor targets is needed, e.g. for rational drug design. Higher fields are bringing clear improvements, and the power of solid state NMR techniques for studying amorphous and membrane associated peptides, proteins and complexes is shown by examples of applications at ultra-high fields. Progress in protein expression, experimental design and data analysis are also presented by leaders in these research areas.
