5 out of 5 stars A Solid Basis for Starting Your Practice.......2005-03-21

It is one thing to learn how to mediate, it is another to learn how to start your business as a mediator. This book focuses on the second task. I found that this book contains good, practical advice for analyzing your own abilities as a mediator and setting up your practice. It even talks about how to establish the physical environment of your office. Combine this with Allan H. Goodman's new, second edition of Basic Skills for the New Mediator, and you should be ready to hang out your shingle.

5 out of 5 stars You Cannot Proceed Without this book!.......2005-03-10

I am just beginning my mediation practice. This book stays with me all day. It gives practical advice, plus deals with the emotional issues attached with such a leap of faith that is required for entering this field. I highy recommend this to everyone!

      5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2003-08-10

This book is one of the most helpful and insightful books that I have read. If you are thinking of, or already are, a mediator, this book is full of great information, ideas, and helpful hints.
This book is an easy read, you could read it in one evening and then be on your way to implement the things that you have learned.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Book on Mediation.......2002-02-18

Forrest Mosten has written what must be the definitive book for those who are considering or might consider a career in mediation.

I have known the author since 1970, when he was a law student working part time for me in the foreign student office at UCLA. Even then he was thinking about how he might incorporate his strong social conscience into the practice of law. Ten years later he found his answer when he committed himself to becoming a professional mediator. For Mosten, mediation is more than an efficient means of resolving disputes, it is a way to work as a peacemaker at the person-to-person level. It provides its practitioners who are attorneys with an alternative to the adversarial nature of the legal system, which weighs heavily on many lawyers. Of course it provides the same benefit for clients. He makes his point about mediation as a peace effort dramatically in chapter one, where he states "...don't jump into a growing but still uncertain field like mediation unless you eat, breath and dream about creating peace and resolving conflict and are willing to risk everything to make it happen".

In addition to maintaining a highly successful mediation practice in Los Angeles, Mosten trains future mediators and he has established a nation-wide network of mediation centers. He also is the author of three previous books on mediation.

The author's purpose in writing the book is stated in the first paragraph of the preface, where he says "It was an uphill climb to build my mediation practice. This book is my effort to help you avoid many of the costly mistakes I made along the way".

The book is organized into three parts, each with several chapters, followed by nine appendices. In the first part, "Is Mediation right for You?", he covers the question of what it takes to be a mediator, such as being a good listener, patient, tolerant and neutral, flexible, and empathic, among other traits. In the chapter on "Education and Training", he discusses the question of non-lawyers as mediators. Mosten admits that lawyers have certain advantages, but he lists other fields which often provide a good background, such as therapists, business persons, teachers and clergy. Whether they come from the law or other fields, he states, extensive training in mediation will be required. Here Mosten goes into some depth on this subject which is dear to his heart because he wants "...mediation to be the first stop on the conflict resolution highway", which means having "...enough trained and experienced mediators available to meet this need".

Part Two, "Building Your Career as a Mediator" deals with the creation of a mediation signature, which includes advice on writing vision and mission statements to distinguish your particular practice. He also advocates having a board of directors to help with these tasks and to provide a sounding board along the way which he had earlier described as an informal group of persons whose judgment you trust. (He might more accurately have called them a "board of advisors). Another chapter, "Creating a Mediation-Friendly Environment", gets down to reading materials and arrangement of the reception room. Most important, he introduces the idea of the client library, described as a consumer-friendly collection of books, video tapes and other resources which will help clients learn what they need to help solve their own problems. This concept is related to Mosten's preference for informed client consent, and he reports that his library is well used by his clients.

Part Three is "The Nuts and Bolts of Private Practice", which covers topics such as finding a place to practice, naming your practice, forming strategic partnerships and networks. With respect to networks, he uses his own Mosten Mediation Centers as an illustrative model, in which he has established local mediators around the country as subcontractors. In the chapter entitled "Strategic Planning and Investing in Yourself", he gets very specific about the time and money required to establish a mediation practice, including a breakdown of out -of-pocket costs which add up to $57,000 over a five-year period.

Even though he has stated his desire to see a great increase in the number of practicing mediators, Mosten in no way sugarcoats the obstacles and challenges facing anyone who plans to enter the field. His candor, at times, would almost seem to discourage, but at least anyone who has read the book would enter the field fully warned. More important they will have read a well integrated combination of philosophy and nuts and bolts, each supporting the other.

This is a critical book for those contemplating a career in mediation, it is a useful book for anyone contemplating using the services of a mediator, and it is an interesting book for those who are attracted by the concept of mediation as a force for more peaceful interpersonal relations.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE book for all Mediators!.......2001-12-04

Dear fellow mediators or anyone looking into the mediation profession:

Mosten's book, Mediation Career Guide, is just the book I was looking for to strategically guide me through deciding whether to go into mediation as a profession. The book is well organized and can be read cover to cover or as a reference guide. Some of the key parts of the book are 1) Deciding if Mediation is Right for You and 2) Building Your Career as a Mediator.

The chapter on deciding whether to get your law degree or not for mediation was an especially important chapter for me. I completed one year of law school and then decided to re-evaluate my J.D. path. I enrolled in SMU's Dispute Resolution program to help with my decision. Mosten's book is the only mediation book that directly dealt with the J.D. dilemma. The chapter did not tell me what to do or what Mosten thinks is best. Instead, the chapter asked certain questions about my background to see whether a J.D. is a good choice or not.

Mosten's book is a MUST HAVE if you are deciding whether the mediation profession is right for you and how to build a mediation practice.

Thank you Forrest (Woody) Mosten for this book and all of your contributions to the peace-making profession!

Fragments on the Deathwatch is a strange, fractured book, part legal advocacy, part poignant memoir. The family and friends who carry out a deathwatch deserve the same consideration and respect given to those who are dying, writes Louise Harmon. Despite its importance in traditional cultures around the world, the time we spend with those who are dying is often ignored in modern life. From the roadblocks thrown up by institutions both legal and medical to our society's taboos about discussing death, we conspire to keep people at arm's length from their dying loved ones. A professor of law at Touro College, Harmon can't help but frame much of her argument in legal terms, in spite of her insistence that no professional vocabulary is adequate to the nuances of grief. Perhaps in order to compensate for this lawyerliness, Fragments on the Deathwatch comes liberally enriched with footnotes, commentary, and a plethora of quotes from poetry as well as from the law. Most powerfully, Harmon also tells the agonizing story of her father's own death and her vigil at his side.

      Book Description

A wise and compassionate book about how we cope with death and dying

Keeping vigil over the dying is an essential human practice with long cultural traditions and profound psychological benefits. Yet, as legal scholar Louise Harmon shows, the institutions of modern life—from hospitals to courtrooms —intrude on this practice. In this humane and lyrical book, Harmon looks at literature, philosophy, history, and autobiography as she delicately probes the taboos around discussion of death. She asks whether the law can recognize the needs of families and loved ones and protect the space of their grieving.
"What an elegant, passionate, moving meditation! Harmon is part philosopher, part poet, a combination that is sure to make this unique book an enduring classic."

4 out of 5 stars The way we lost the last, sacred moments of life........1999-09-03

This is the best book I have read on the current state of dying in the West. The author, Louise Harmon, is a law professor in Huntington, New York. Sounds dry, huh? Wrong. The book exposes the process by which death left the geography of the dying person's home and was transported to the hospital. With this shift in the place in which people died there was a corresponding explosion in technologies available to prolong life. Thus, a long, tedious legal and medical battle ensued against death itself, effectively pulling the plug on a significant and meaningful end to life. Fragments does an excellent job of documenting these changes in the dying process and their deleterious effects on our culture. Can any society afford to separate itself from its dying without a loss of its humanity?

Fragments is written in an unusual way, perhaps common to law texts. Whenever the author wants to take a rabbit trail, she includes a note with commentary at the bottom of the page. She also includes copious footnotes. The commentary and footnotes alone are worth the price of the book. Her discursive thoughts and ramblings are fascinating. She uses good metaphors that help the reader understand and follow her reasoning. Finally, if you enjoy dry wit, she is an artist, especially in skewering the secular attitudes of our modern culture towards dying. This is a compassionate and engaging evaluation of the way we now die alone.

        Book Description

Jack Zirker takes us on an imaginary voyage from the center of the sun to its surface, showing us how sunlight is made and finally following the sun's energy to the far reaches of the solar system. Along the way, he introduces the basic processes at work in our nearest star and the exciting answers solar scientists are finding to problems that have long perplexed astronomers.

Journey from the Center of the Sun describes how theory and practice are coming together to provide a new understanding of this old star. At this moment, solar physicists are collecting the best observations ever obtained about the sun's interior and dynamic atmosphere, while a new breed of theorists is interpreting these data using computer simulations. Zirker reports on cutting-edge advances and looks at the tough questions solar physicists are beginning to crack. How can we account for the solar wind that causes the sun to lose mass at an astonishing rate? Where have all the neutrinos gone? How does the sun generate magnetic sunspots, and why does it have a sunspot cycle? What causes a solar flare to explode? How does the sun affect the earth's climate? What is a sunquake?

For the armchair astronomer or the student of astrophysics, this book provides an unusually complete picture of solar physics today.

3 out of 5 stars Some of the explanations of solar physics confusing.......2005-12-19

In contrast to the other reviewers, I found some of the explanations of the physics behind solar processes rather confusing. For example, I couldn't quite understand the points made in the notes to chapter 5 about standing waves, modes and nodes. Also, the captions to the figures often don't explain what the axes of the graphs are supposed to represent.

5 out of 5 stars A Stellar Journey (pun intended).......2002-06-10

This book takes you through an incredible journey inside our nearest star. If you ever thought the sun was just a big nuclear furnace, here you will learn of the amazing complexities and mysteries of this star that gives us all life. Along the way you will meet many of the great scientist that contributed to the wealth of knowledge that we have amassed about the sun over the short time (relative to the sun's life) that we have inhabited this third planet from it.

Dr. Zirker begins with many of the questions we still have about the sun; such as - Why the thin corona outer atmosphere is much hotter that the surface (photosphere)? How is the solar wind accelerated to velocities of 800 km/s? What causes the huge coronal mass ejections and solar flares that have direct consequences on earth? Why does the sun follow solar cycles? Where are the missing neutrinos that should be produced from the proton-proton chain reaction taking place in the core?

The book gives the latest research on these and many other aspects of solar science such as the relatively new fields of helioseismology, chaos theory, fractal geometry, and others. Along the way you will learn why the light produced in the core by the thermonuclear process takes a million years to reach the surface (and then only another 8.3 minutes to reach the earth), why the intense activity in the convection zone (the zone that reaches some 200,000 km below the surface) is attributed to sound waves, and how the sunspots are related to the intense magnetic storms occurring on the sun.

One of the subtle things you will get from this book is how the scientific process works - how theories are proposed, experiments designed and preformed and theories revised (or abandoned) and how our scientific knowledge is perpetuated by "standing on the shoulders of giants" - all the works and sacrifices of those that have come before us.
An inspiring book if ever there was one!

5 out of 5 stars Popular Science Writing at its Best.......2002-02-14

I loved this book. As a biochemistry professor I always particularly appreciate good popular science writing, the kind that can engage and excite my students. Clearly written and beautifully illustrated, Journey strikes a perfect balance between too simple and too heavy--with a few technical appendices for those who need more details. I highly recommend it as supplementary reading for college astronomy courses, or just fun reading for science buffs at all levels.

5 out of 5 stars A Long, Well Documented and Interesting Journey It Is!.......2002-02-06

For science, always read the latest available information. For the sun, this book has it. Contains excellent summary descriptions of solar theories, both proven and proposed. The author is familiar with most solar research and the researchers involved. The writing is clear. The science is accurate. A "must read" for armchair astronomers wanting the latest about the sun.

5 out of 5 stars For the armchair astronomer.......2002-01-06

"Journey from the Center of the Sun" hits the right level for me in describing the science of the sun; it uses words, pictures, and word-pictures (no math) to describe how the complex physics of nuclear reactions, plasmas, and enormous magnetic explosions all work to make the sun provide us with energy - and also blast the earth with solar wind storms. I am a reader of Scientific American and love to read layman books on science because there is no way that I could understand the technical, mathematical papers of the experts, and yet am fascinated by the rapidly unfolding developments in physics, astronomy, and cosmology. I would highly recommend this book for those readers who want a well-written explanation of the sun, the on-going work on solar cycles, sunspots, the "missing neutrino" problem, the "coronal heating" conundrum, and the new studies in helioseismology. I will also add that I enjoyed Jack Zirker's first book "Total Eclipses of the Sun" which inspired me to travel to an eclipse - an experience I would like to repeat.

Joost Elffers and Saxton Freymann first revealed how peppers, pears, and potatoes could magically take on expressive faces and lively personalities in Play with Your Food. Since then, they've put their portraiture skills to good use telling fun kids' stories like this, populated by all manner of anthropomorphic produce.

Gus and his dog, Button, (with black-eyed peas for eyes) live in a drab little mushroom town until one day a storm blows a mysterious bright green object by their window. Gus then becomes inspired to venture out into the world, through the Howling Forest: "Gus knew it was a dangerous place where he must never go. 'But I must find out,' said Gus, 'where things this bright can grow.'" And so begins his adventure, past Howell the Wolf (a sly artichoke), into the arms of new friends Cecil, Pip, and Belle (a good-natured green apple, a toothy orange, and a wide-eyed red pepper, respectively), and on to the bustling city of Cornucopia.

Elffers and Freymann pack each page with scores of different fruits and vegetables, from Swiss chard to star fruit to patty pan squash, and even the backdrops brim with ingenuity. (Are those mushroom capitals on celery pillars? Is that river really made out of red cabbage?) Although you'll almost certainly risk some subsequent food play, Gus and Button are pals worth joining for a trip. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

And I'm an adult. Every time my daughter goes to the shelf to get a book for story time this is the book I hope she brings back. The pages are always fresh, it seems like every time I turn the page I see something new that I hadn't seen before. My daughter loves the story and can fill in the rhyming words for me. What can I say, the effort that went in to produce this book is obvious, and the rewards are great.

A friend of mine bought this book for her niece. I read it and absolutely fell in love with it. The pictures are so descriptive and really quite amazing. The use of food really adds a unique and adorable edge to this book. I have since bought the book for my niece and nephew and plan on reading this book to my own children over and again as soon as I have them. In the mean time, any time I need to smile, I will pull this book out to brighten my day. The message is also very "apeeling" :)

My son, who's just turned 5, loved this book. So did my 50 year old brother-in-law when he read it to my son. It had us all laughing looking at the pictures made of fruits and vegetables. The characters are charming, Belle the red pepper, Pip the Apple, and Cecil the Orange, as well as Gus and Button, the mushroom child and his dog. Many hours of reading and re-reading the story and going back and finding all the different fruits and vegetables that made up the pictures.

4 out of 5 stars North American Boletes.......2007-01-04

This is a comprehensive review of the boletes of North America.
It is rather "pricy" and while it is difficult to identify all
of the boletes in this region (the mid-Atlantic), the expansive
coverage makes identification even more frustrating!

          5 out of 5 stars A much needed Guide.......2007-01-03

As an expierenced schrommer most of the books on mushrooms had a limited reference on boletes. This book fills that gap. The photos and the text are first class. The book is pricey but well worth it to one who loves to hunt mushrooms!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Reference Guide.......2006-08-05

This is the best reference book I have on Boletes. Because it just covers boletes it is a fairly comprehensive guide, and the book is so easy to use. The keys make it easy to identify just about any Bolete. The descriptions are in alphabetical order as are the pictures so it is easy to flip through to find what you want. The pictures are incredible! The price was well worth it for me.

1 out of 5 stars Most expensive paper weight i own.......2006-07-20

Great book if you are a scientist, but for the average mushroom hunter it is way too complicated to use. Information is scattered thoughout the book so you are forever flipping pages Ex.Once you get to a name, you have to go to the index w/that name to find out where the picture it's at. Don't it make sense to have that info next to the mushroom name and description.
Don't waste your money, join a mushroom club!

5 out of 5 stars Scholarly, yet accessible........2004-01-07

This book is a little pricey, but sometimes you get what you pay for. The keys are fabulous, the photography excellent, and by limiting itself to boletes, this book covers most of what you will find, at least in North America. I have been collecting, identifying, and eating wild mushrooms for years, and this is one of the best reference books of the many I've used.

Miriam Rice opens our eyes to the astonishing array of colors that can be extracted from many types of fungi. She names the mushrooms, tells us where to find them and how to dye yarns with them, primarily wool and silk, to get all the beautiful colors you could ever desire.
Now that many years have elapsed since this book was published, I wonder what other magic things she has been up to with fungi and hope she will let us in on her latest finds very soon!

                    2 out of 5 stars A Mushroom Wonder Book.......2005-06-01

This short book is a picture-book about the wonders of mushrooms and fungi. It is written for British readers, so it features mushrooms from Britain rather than North American or Europe. The author assures us that "a very large number of fungi are edible," and laments the fact that British people consume far fewer wild mushrooms than Scandinavians or Russians do. She notes that "the general opinion as to whether a certain fungus is fit to eat or not depends very much on the part of the world in which one happens to reside." She doesn't highlight the fact, however, that with some species, the same mushroom can be harmless when grown in one part of the world and quite poisonous in another. Here in North America, we've heard stories of European immigrants and visitors who go out mushroom hunting in our forests and end up preparing for themselves their last supper, due to ignorance about our mushrooms. Those in the know tell us that anyone can learn to identify edible European mushrooms safely, but only a real woods expert would try to do the same here, and even then, North American experts stay away from many edible species simply because they have poisonous look-alike cousins. But this text doesn't mention any of this, since its seeming goal is to get British readers more interested in mushroom hunting in British forests.

The other goal of the book is to astound readers with wondrous mushroom photography. Each page contains one or more large format color pictures, drawn from several public and private collections. The photos are organized more by color and shape than by mushroom family. Instead of portraying a prototypical example of the species, some of the pictures are chosen because they display rare characteristics, such as being a "Siamese twin" specimen. While most of the mushrooms can be found in Britain, a few are depicted from as far away as Malaysia because of exotic properties such as bioluminescence. British readers may find the book useful for limited identification purposes, but North American readers will want to find a more localized guidebook for identification. Nevertheless, North American readers may enjoy the mushroom photography and simple text as general background about mushrooms and fungi.

                        Book Description

This book covers basic concepts in population and quantitative genetics, including measuring selection on phenotypic traits. The emphasis is on material applicable to field studies of evolution focusing on ecologically important traits. Topics addressed are critical for training students in ecology, evolution, conservation biology, agriculture, forestry, and wildlife management.

Many texts in this field are too complex and mathematical to allow the average beginning student to readily grasp the key concepts. A Primer of Ecological Genetics, in contrast, employs mathematics and statistics—fully explained, but at a less advanced level—as tools to improve understanding of biological principles. The main goal is to enable students to understand the concepts well enough that they can gain entry into the primary literature. Integration of the different chapters of the book shows students how diverse concepts relate to each other.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand Textbook.......2006-11-06

This is a great textbook that could easily be used in any evolution or genetics class. It clearly describes issues like evolution and natural selection in the context of ecological genetics. The examples are interesting and stay in the reader's mind, and the problem sets and online answers are a great resource. This book also serves as a handy reference guide anytime you need to find a formula or definition. It's appropriate for upper level undergraduate courses or introductory graduate courses.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of ecological genetics!.......2005-04-29

I am a graduate student studying behavioral ecology. I have taken courses in ecological genetics and evolutionary ecology. Most professors don't use a text book of any sort when teaching on these topics. This book is an excellent reference for learning the fundamentals about these topics. It includes current and classic examples from the primary literature as well as a carefully constructed glossary of terms. I highly recommend this resource to both professors teaching courses to upper level undergraduates and graduate students!

                            Book Description

Moral depravity and criminal corruption caused Ancient Rome to deteriorate 2000 years ago - and the United States to follow suit in the 21st century. A futuristic fictional story, The Gladiators Wore Blue portrays how today's political events lead to an unprincipled society and world destruction. The possibility of certain scenarios having actually occurred, and the likelihood of anticipated perilous incidents actually occurring in the future, are both shocking and frightening. You may laugh, but you'll also cry. You may want to reject, but you'll be forced to think. You may be disgusted at times, but your heart will break. You may think political, but you'll feel human. Heart-warming, humorous, thoughtful. And all too ghastley.
