1 out of 5 stars Model?.......2004-10-03

If you are looking for a book that contains model policies and procedures, this book is not for you. When I opened the cover, I fully expected to see full-length sample model policies and procedures. For example, your typical investment policy should be seven or more pages. Mr. McMillan's "model" policy had only a couple of useless paragraphs. I expected more for the $65 cover price.

This book is extremely hard to find, even through used-books web sites. I suggest calling the publisher (ASAE) directly at (202) 626-2723.

5 out of 5 stars The importance of policies!.......2000-01-29

As a partner with a CPA firm in Annapolis, MD, our firm has several not-for-profit clients. One of their most serious deficiences is the lack of formal, board-approved accounting and financial policies and procedures.

Our experience has been that formal policies, in addition to eliminating misunderstandings between the CEO, the CFO and the board is that they are invaluable in the event of an IRS audit.

When advising our clients of the importance of these policies, we found that compiling policies from scratch was a very time-consuming process.

We found the answer - McMillan's "Model Accounting & Financial Policies and Procedures Handbook". This book addresses every conceivable policy from Access to Records by Members to the Year-End Manual and everything in between! Additionally, the CD Rom that is included with the book results in completing an otherwise onerous task with a minimum of effort.

We use it at our firm and we highly recommend it to our clients!

Feel free to call me with any questions:

4 out of 5 stars Useful.......2007-08-12

There are some other books out there on the same subject. Some, like "Toxic Coworkers," may do the job even better. But this is still a useful volume. As the Introduction notes (page 1): "This is a book about impossible people and how to cope with them." Coping is the center of this work--how to deal with workers who are difficult to work with. The idea? (Page 7): "Coping enables you and the Difficult Person to get on with the business at hand." "Win-win" is the goal. Is the advice useful? Each reader will have to decide for him/herself?

The book describes a variety of difficult types: hostile-aggressive, the complainer, unresponsive ones, wonderfully nice people who don't perform, the negativist, know-it-alls, and indecisive stallers. For each, the author describes the malady and then suggests how one might work with them to get the best out of them. The book closes, also, with ideas as to how one can manage one's own "defensive behavior" around such problem workers. The author concludes (page 214): ". . .many people just like you have found that coping effectively with difficult people is possible."

Final question: How well does the book succeed? Not bad, but the solutions will not convince all readers.

5 out of 5 stars Dealing With Difficult People.......2007-05-09

Read about the different types of people in the world today, and find out ways to deal with difficult personalities.

4 out of 5 stars Good coping strategies .......2007-04-13

I thought the parts of this book that described some of the different, difficult personalities was very good. I actually really thought it had something to offer and the strategies were practical. The insights though didn't stick and I think that you have to read this regularly to keep reminding yourself that all these people exist in the world (including you) and you are going to see them every day. Thats kind of a depressing thought actually. With all the other books I need to keep reading to remind myself about various insights I want to stay home.

3 out of 5 stars I liked the concept of this book.......2007-02-05

The concept of this book is good. You can't change other people, and you can't always avoid them. The most realistic option is to have some coping strategies. I think the author outlined them well. I gave the book three stars, though, because the reading got to be tedious and boring. I've read similar books that are more enjoyable, either because you can identify the different personality type with humor, or because they explained the personalities more realistically with better situational examples. This book seemed a little dry.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful advice .......2007-01-19

Bramson wisely uses the word 'coping'. That is he is not suggesting that one can really overcome or transform difficult people. He is speaking primarily about difficult people in the working place. The domineering aggressive abusive type should according to Bramson not be reacted to with anger and rage. One should also refused to be intimidated, and instead asset one's own views. The sniper who by little satirical remarks, and efforts at humor tries to hurt and diminish should be confronted and questioned as to his true intentions. The complainer should be opposed with positive ideas on the same project that the complainer is negative about. The know-it-alls, the silent- negative types, the indecisive also can in some way countered and dealt with.
Above all the aim must be to prevent these negative types from dominating one's own mindscape and action.
All of us confront in one way or another difficult people. And each of us is perhaps in a certain way a difficult person himself. This book is addressing a subject we all in some way know, and have connection with.
One other point. I have known and loved in my life very very difficult people perhaps beyond in a way described in this book. The fact is it is often what is difficult in them which somehow more strongly binds them to us.
This is a complicated subject about which there are worlds to be said.

      Book Description

This text, designed for beginning students of stellar physics, introduces the fundamentals of stellar structure and evolution. In emphasizing the general picture of the life cycles of stars and the physics responsible, it also allows prospective specialists a taste of many of the detailed aspects of this mature discipline. The authors develop a solid foundation in important theory that is often overlooked in typical courses, yet steer clear of extraneous intensive mathematics and physics. Topics include nuclear physics and stellar energy sources, the equation of state of stellar material, phenomenological approaches to convection, and modern numerical techniques for computation of stellar evolution. Keeping pace with recent developments, the authors incorporate important elements such as asteroseismology, and the effects of rotation and magnetic fields. The text contains the source code for two useful programs, ZAMS (for constructing chemically homogeneous zero-age main sequence models) and PULS (to study the seismological properties of the ZAMS models). Some chapters include exercises. The diskette can be used on any computer with a FORTRAN compiler.

                      Book Description

Since 1975, and the identification of the solar 5-minute oscillations as global acoustic modes, helioseismology has proven to be a very active field. It enabled thorough investigation of the physical processes occurring inside the stars, thanks to the extreme precision of the measured frequencies. In 1995, a new step was achieved with the completion of the GONG network and the launch of the SoHO satellite, increasing by several orders of magnitude the quality of the available data. The IAU 181 Symposium was chosen by all these consortia as a key time to present their first results.
This book contains a synthesis of the progress in the observations and of up-to-date knowledge of the internal structure and rotation of the Sun inferred from helioseismology. It also presents our expectation of what can be learned about other stars with asteroseismology. In this field, encouraging results have been obtained and another step will be made with COROT, the first satellite dedicated to asteroseismology.

                          Book Description

This monograph offers the first comprehensive treatment of the material properties of non-linear electromagnetic elastic crystals through constitutive equations. The lists and tables given in this volume are essential to the discussion of material properties of magnetic crystal classes and for research in the nonlinear electro-magnetic theory of elastic solids. Nonlinear optics, nonlinear magnetism, elastic solids subject to large fields, plasma physics are but a few areas where one needs nonlinear constitutive equations in their final forms. The method and materials provided here should be useful, therefore, to material scientists, engineers, and physicists working in these fields. Several examples of applications to demonstrate the use of the theory are included. The results have been verified by means of computer.

Robert Graham, the oddball inventor and millionaire at the heart of David Plotz's book, The Genius Factory, is the archetype for the cliché, "more money than brains." It was Graham who reckoned America was going to hell in a hand basket and the best way to halt the trend was to impregnate women with sperm donated by Nobel Prize winners and other overachievers (providing they were smart and white). Forget for the moment the not-so-thinly-veiled racism powering the whole eugenics movement that served as the backbone of Graham's Repository for Germinal Choice. Graham's super-sperm idea also conveniently overlooked the fact that the women carrying the babies would also leave a genetic imprint while ignoring the nurture-versus-nature argument. Though Plotz addresses these concepts in his book, the real reason to recommend it is its characters, the sperm bank progeny Plotz unearths through intense and covert legwork. The book's humor is also a selling point: "In abstract, donating sperm seemed fundamentally silly. But actually doing it was seductive," Plotz writes. "I had been accepted by the ultraexclusive Fairfax Cryobak! My sperm was 'well above average'! My count was 105 million! What's yours, George Clooney?" Elsewhere, Plotz writes, "By late 1980, Graham found himself presiding over a Nobel Prize sperm bank that had no Nobel Prize donors, no Nobel sperm left in storage and no Nobel babies. None of the first three women who'd been inseminated with Nobel sperm had gotten pregnant. In fact, no one inseminated with the Nobel sperm ever got pregnant. The Nobel Prize sperm bank would never produce a single Nobel baby." No matter. Graham's experiment, which did produce dozens of non-Nobel babies, was a success in one regard: it made for a heck of a story. And in Plotz's capable hands, it also makes for a heck of a book. --Kim Hughes

                          Book Description

It was the most radical human-breeding experiment in American history, and no one knew how it turned out. The Repository for Germinal Choice–nicknamed the Nobel Prize sperm bank–opened to notorious fanfare in 1980, and for two decades, women flocked to it from all over the country to choose a sperm donor from its roster of Nobel-laureate scientists, mathematical prodigies, successful businessmen, and star athletes. But the bank quietly closed its doors in 1999–its founder dead, its confidential records sealed, and the fate of its children and donors unknown. In early 2001, award-winning columnist David Plotz set out to solve the mystery of the Nobel Prize sperm bank.

Plotz wrote an article for Slate inviting readers to contact him–confidentially–if they knew anything about the bank. The next morning, he received an email response, then another, and another–each person desperate to talk about something they had kept hidden for years. Now, in The Genius Factory, Plotz unfolds the full and astonishing story of the Nobel Prize sperm bank and its founder’s radical scheme to change our world.

Believing America was facing genetic catastrophe, Robert Graham, an eccentric millionaire, decided he could reverse the decline by artificially inseminating women with the sperm of geniuses. In February 1980, Graham opened the Repository for Germinal Choice and stocked it with the seed of gifted scientists, inventors, and thinkers. Over the next nineteen years, Graham’s “genius factory” produced more than two hundred children.

What happened to them? Were they the brilliant offspring that Graham expected? Did any of the “superman” fathers care about the unknown sons and daughters who bore their genes? What were the mothers like?

Crisscrossing the country and logging countless hours online, Plotz succeeded in tracking down previously unknown family members–teenage half-brothers who ended up following vastly different paths, mothers who had wondered for years about the identities of the donors they had selected on the basis of code names and brief character profiles, fathers who were proud or ashamed or simply curious about the children who had been created from their sperm samples.

The children of the “genius factory” are messengers from the future–a future that is bearing down on us fast. What will families be like when parents routinely “shop” for their kids’ genes? What will children be like when they’re programmed for greatness? In this stunning, eye-opening book, one of our finest young journalists previews America’s coming age of genetic expectations.

5 out of 5 stars A great read with an appropriate title.......2007-10-03

This book was incredibly interesting - a topic that I certainly wouldn't have thought would be so. It is very well written - so much so that you think you are reading a novel at times. The stories of tracking down the families and descendants were particularly fascinating.

I think the title of the book (and the jacket picture) provide a good clue to how this book is written - serious yet fun. The reviewers that said the book lacked scientific fact or basis missed this point entirely.

Definitely one of my all time top non-fiction books.

2 out of 5 stars Not much "Hard Science" I expected more. .......2007-08-19

I'm only half way through the book, but I'm not sure I can go on. I may return to it later. There is definitely thought provoking material here, but I was looking for more scientific "meat". Interesting that when Graham opened up to the sperm bank to any woman, it became a market driven company for the short time it was around and women began selecting for qualities other than Nobel type intelligence, qualities like "looks", happiness, athleticism. Darwin strikes again!!!

                          5 out of 5 stars Scary Reality.......2007-02-21

This is a great book, made even more relevant due to the pressing times we live. Given the current state of science, artificial births, and eugenics, this book provides some great background on one man's attempt to breed a society of geniuses. Science fiction you say? No, this is all true fact! The author did an excellent job of digging up all the information necessary for this book, which was no easy task given the ultimate secrecy in which the project was carried out under. This is definitely THE book on this topic, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in science and where society may be headed in the near future if we are not careful!

4 out of 5 stars Makes you rethink ever buying donor sperm.......2007-01-20

As numerous readers have pointed out, this book is divided into several parts or themes. What I found to be the most interesting was the psychological and emotional part of the book--the identity of the donors, how these banks operate, and the psychological fallout for the kids and their families from anonymous donation, and then in some cases, disclosure. Basically, the banks were run like a joke, and a lot of the kids seem desperate to know their genetic (what they would call "real") dads--which is incredibly sad. Meanwhile, the fathers who (sometimes) raised them felt disconnected to the kids... Some of the donors were liars and very creepy guys who were going nowhere with their lives, but had some bizarre sense of narcissism that was satisfied by donation. This book is not fantastically written, and there are almost too many angles and things to think about in here, but overall, it is indeed a page turner and fascinating book that is well worth buying. Probably great for book clubs as well. There would be no end of opinions and items of discussion...

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking and funny..........2006-11-01

I stumbled upon this book by chance and it is definitely a page turner. David Plotz started this whole series about "seed" at slate.com in 2001 before "The Genius Factory: The Curious History of the Nobel Prize Sperm Bank" existed. After reading it, I find this book thought provoking and funny as Plotz takes you on a journey to "what if geniuses dominate the world, will it improve society?" and how heredity and environment shape who we are. It was an enjoyable book and I totally recommend it.

A well-written story about the Nobel sperm bank, their originators, their donors and the babies. The story unfolds as the author meets new characters who either donated or had sperms from this infamous repository. It also tells Shockley's story, the founder of the silicon valley and transistor, whom I once revered, how he dreamt of achieving super-intelligent white super-race to replace people with low IQ, and what happened to his dreams. Read it and enjoy !

                              Book Description

In this book, academic researchers and technologists will find important information on the interaction of polymeric and non-polymeric inhibitors with a variety of scale forming crystals such as calcium phosphates, calcium carbonate, calcium oxalates, barium sulfate, calcium pyrophosphates, and calcium phosphonates. Moreover, the book delivers information to plant managers and formulators who would like to broaden and deepen their knowledge about processes involved in precipitation of sparingly soluble salts and learn more about the inhibitory aspects of various commercially available materials. Furthermore, experienced researchers will obtain fruitful and inspiring ideas from the easily accessible information about overlapping research areas, which will promote discoveries of new inhibitors (synthetic and/or natural) for the currently unmet challenges.

                                    Book Description

A comedy about a 9 year old boy who is disappointed and concerned about his social status in his grammer school and community becauses he receives a J.C.Higgins bicycle instead of a Schwinn. To make his point he compares his J.C.Higgins to America's laughable version of an automobile....The Edsel. He talks about kids so desperate to not be associated with either the Edsel or the Higgins that they invented "Edsel Escape Diving." This was a precision move designed by kids so that when the parents slowed the family Edsel in order to pull into the school yard, the kids would leap from the car while it was still in motion. The purpose for that little manuver was to put as much distance as possible between themselves and the joke that Detroit played on an unsuspecting public.
