What a fabulous book! While this is designed to be the text of a course teaching the aspects of personal finance from the Time Value of Money to Choosing a Career through rational thinking about consumer purchase and retirement. It is organized very well with very clear writing and many helpful illustrations, tables, and resources.
The book guides the student to many online resources in order to develop skills that will be needed to research the nearly infinite variety of decisions and choices we all need to make in life. Being informed about the problem we face will provide us a basis for making better decisions.
One of the methods the book uses to illustrate the effects of financial decisions on real human life is the fictional Steele family. The family faces various issues, makes imperfect decisions, and the student gets to ponder what should have been done and what they could do to improve their current situation. It is a nice device that adds a practical side to the lessons on topics such as mortgages, saving for children's education, and insurance.
While this is most likely to be used in college courses, I wish it could be taught to young people as soon as they are somewhat serious about the decisions they will be making to form their lives. Ideally, high schools could offer an elective class for those serious students who want to get a head start in mastering the financial issues that will have such a powerful effect on their future security.
This is really a terrific book and can be read by individuals without a course or instructor. Obviously, an instructor will help and aid the student's understanding, but this is such an important topic that I encourage everyone who is interested in understanding the financial side of their life to read and work through this book.

By using the suggestions for organizing and presenting information in this book, I have a whole new appreciation for the things I've managed to accomplish over the years. Nearing retirement age, with five successful careers behind me and another just starting up, I still found little niches of self-defeating behavior, ways in which I was emphasizing the wrong thing or ignoring key accomplishments.
More than just a guide to resumes, this book helped me see that the new career change will bring my work life a lot closer to my core values; and it showed me clearly how to be successful from the very start.

This is the BEST resume book ever put together. I started a resume wrting business and this is the one I use every day. It is by far the most in-depth (at near 600 pages) step-by-step practical guide to everything you need in specific detail from action verb keywords for specific industries and positions to exactly how to format in Word! Also valuable are the impact-mining questions to generate the copy for a top notch resume AND how to lead into and craft your qualifications summary (a must have). I cannot say WOW enough!!

I really like this resume book. It was really helpful and has a lot of possible templates, job description vocabulary, it even helps with selecting what font to use for your job title. I would definately reccommend this book for anyone who wants to update their resume.

This book is very good. The only thing that I kept doing while flipping through it is I'd be studying a resume format and then realize that this is the "before" version, and then I was delighted to see the "after" version was there, and quite good. I especially found the examples of phrases useful in putting together a resume. You can go down the list of action verbs and see how many you can use to help describe your accomplishments, such as: "Tripled - Tripled sales volume in an established territory" or "Familiarized - Familiarized customers with company features and benefits". You can scan all the action verbs and make your own sentences. There are pages of them. Good luck to you - this book is sure to help!
Very useful!.......2007-08-04
I found this book to be very useful and easy to use. Easy to use is great since this is a fairly long book that you do not want to have to dig through every time you want to up date your resume. The tips and outlines in the book were very helpful. I do with the resume templates were easier to locate within the book and that the book spent a little more time on CVs other than that the book was exceptional.

An excellent addtion to its sister book "resume magic".......2006-12-09
This book follows the path the "resume magic" made. Although I found slightly below "resume magic" it still an excellent reference to write cover letters.
All aspects of building a cover letter are covered in a progressive manner. The task of writing is therefore a lot easier. Examples are very good, and the author did a very good job leading the reader through the task of writing a cover letter.
In the end this book will definitely help you come up with strong, well structured and well written cover letters.
A must have for every job-seekers or just any professional.
Adapted for the times.......2005-03-08
As an IT professional, I found this book packed with good information. The overall style is updated and compatible with the times, and the many examples are creative and varied. Too many "cover letters" cling to the old school of "Enclosed Please Find" formality of another era. In these times, it's equally important to communicate some idea of your style and personality to give an employer a more complete picture of what they're getting when they think of hiring you - that extra something that makes you pleasantly unique from the 500 other cover letters in the pile.
For my field, I almost never use paper anymore for letters or for resumes, so I found the info on email throughout the book to be very useful. Most books I've seen barely cover it at all or the authors don't quite grasp its limitations.
I also liked the way the book analyzed the cover letter examples of what worked and what didn't, and why. The exercises were a bit vague but you don't really need them to get the most from this book. It's worth every penny.
Not for serious jobs.......2003-10-05
This book is decent if you're looking for a back-office/blue-collar type job. The tactics are very basic and the examples are childish and the format quite unprofessional. If you're looking for a real cover letter guide for the most competitive jobs look somewhere else.

This is a good, short intro to stargazing from your backyard all year 'round. It also includes informative info on astronomical topics of interest to the amateur, such as eclipses. The diagrams are clear and straightforward and easy to follow. Take your kids out into the backyard and inspire the next Hubble!

If you only ever own one book about the beautiful sky above, this is the MUST HAVE. Beautifully written, illustrated and presented, it is also a perfect gift book for anyone who shares a fascination with the stars, planets and heavens above. All in all, a superb little book, especially nice in hardback.

I bought this book on a whim while looking for star atlases. First, this book does have brief guides based on the seasons on where to see some astronomical wonders. But that is not where it strenght lies. Chet Raymo paints a poetic portrait of our night sky in this book which will captivate your imagination. You can actually feel your mind reaching out across the universe as he pulls you into the initial creation of the heavens and sends you flying out at light speed. Each chapter delves into a aspect of the night sky which tickles your imagination. You will find yourself thinking for hours after putting this book down and looking forward to the next time you can pick it up.
If you are looking for a guide to the night sky, try "Turn Left at Orion". If you want to explore the heavens and enlighten your own mind, buy this book!!! You will not be disappointed in its lyrical prose and heavenly sketches.

Chet Raymo certainly has a way with words. Couple that with detailed diagrams and pictures of the sky, and you have a wonderful book for anyone remotely interested in the heavens. This book has a poetic nature about it, but it is by no means written on an unattainable level--even for younger readers. This book covers all of the astronomical basics (birth/death of stars, the colors of stars and what that means about heat intensity, planets, comets, galaxies, and universes). It also offers eyes-on experience with diagrams and instructions for night viewing of the sky. The book concludes with a moving chapter about how the universe will end, citing a letter from Einstein and telling the story as if it were a fairytale. Not only is the book enthrallingly beautiful on the inside, but it is equally beautiful on the outside cover (the picture here on Amazon.com just does not do it justice). For a stargazer who is just beginning to search the sky or a seasoned watcher who simply loves celestial beauty, this book will leave the reader satisfied and inspired.

I recently finished this book and would recommend it to others interested in how language influences behaviors. Sure, there are many themes the book addresses, but my main focus was examining the connections between language manipulation and control of behavior.
Poorly written self help garbage.......2006-07-03
Snakes on a plane: the book.
If you've just read Dawkins' books such as The Selfish Gene or The Blind Watchmaker and think this might be a good follow up please think twice!
This is not a science book and reads much more like a self help book. There is a very low content/noise ratio as it delivers very few ideas, and then expounds upon the same ideas over and over again using every new metaphor or anecdote the author can imagine. I couldn't even finish it as I was bored to tears and eventually just felt completely patronized and then annoyed by the author's sloppy understanding of the science involved.
He repeatedly refers to natural selection as a "kludge" which shows a complete lack of understanding of Dawkins' material.
If you want a good laugh at Brodie's incompetence with even basic statistics use Amazon's Inside This Book feature to read the paragraph on page 173 that begins "Now let's get a handle on what it really means..." (you can also search on the number 6500 to find this page). Either the author is clueless, or the people on this island have 1-year lifespans.
How did this guy get published?
Memes for dummies (3 1/2 stars).......2006-05-07
Please be advised that this book does not take a cold calculated scientific approach at explaining memetics. Richard Brodie explains memes by recounting his personal discovery of memes, futhermore elaborating a fairly modest 'scientific' conclusion. I recommended this book to those merely curious about memetics. If you like 'guru-type' self help books you'll find that this book will suffice is explaining memes while expanding your consciousness. If you are looking for a scientific approach to memetics I would recommend Susan Blackmore's The Meme Machine.

PARADIGM SHIFT.......2005-12-08
First of all I would like to point out that people like to attack the things they don't understand, especially when it threatens to change their world view. Second THIS WAS AN AMAZING BOOK. Reading it as some one not familiar with memes, it was a very good intro lesson. I agree he is not one of the literary masters but there is not use in denying the importance of the subject matter. I went for months without being able to see a TV commercial or radio ad without thinking about this concept. It will either open your eyes or you would condemn Richard Brodie to hell yourself. Very powerfull ideas, although most of the really good ones weren't originally his own. If you don't believe in the concept please read George Orwell's essay: "Politics and the English Language", and "The Selfish Gene". Ignore the other naysayers only defending their narrow world view. If you have an open mind this book is an adventure.

Ah, 'The Mendicants'. Or, 'The Singular of Which You Should Not Call Goo If You Want To Live Very Much Longer On This Earth. Here, Groo even causes long distance carnage, as the stress of him is felt from a distance. Much sword waving and going red and almost-swearing to be found in this volume of barbarian frivolity and hilarity.

My third-grade son recently got into the Groo graphic novels and has read several of them. This book is very funny. There's an undertone of serious commentary on the human condition (my son was oblivious to this, of course). Too violent for really young children or the squeamish. If you've got an older kid or a teenager around your house who doesn't much like to read, you might try them on this.
