The history and changing technology of x-ray astronomy is revealed, from its beginnings in the 1950s when the first artificial satellites began transmitting to modern-day x-ray telescopes. Beautiful color images of quasars, black holes and more captured by x-ray satellite Chandra are presented along with a fine explanation of the new worlds and environments discovered through x-ray astronomy. With its emphasis on color photos and science mixed with an easy reading style, The Violent Universe is sure to captivate beyond a readership of astronomy students alone. Mammals Of The National Parks: Conserving America's Wildlife And Parklands by John H. Burde & George A. I was there........2005-07-22
I was one of the students in Don Coduto's graduate level class that helped him "use" this book when it was in the final review stages. We helped him find all the little mistakes before final publishing. I still carry around that old 700+ page volume of a notebook we had for that class. It's nice to see it finally published. It is an OUTSTANDING book making geotechincal work more readily accessible to the average engineer. The example problems will help one grasp the concepts faster. Don can always be contacted with questions as well. ENJOY.

This excellent text eased my transition from analytical chemistry work and toxicology into the fascinating field of geotechnical engineering, helping me grasp both the methodology and the reasoning behind numerous geotechnical analyses -- from the most fundamental basics of soil classification to the empirical, working, and theoretical underpinnings of rising head/falling tail flexible membrane permeametry. Coduto's book also sheds rays of light upon the ephemeral calculations beloved by the writers of ASTM methodology: Get this book, you will not be disappointed!
Excellent Beginner's Resource.......2001-08-07
Coduto has done a great job in producing an entry level geotechnical engineering book. It does not go into thhe level of detail needed at times, but serves as a good resource for students learning about soils and geotechnical engineering. Very easy to understand and follow, and provides many diagrams and photos for better understanding.

Recent advances in material technology and low temperature techniques have led to the discovery of new physical phenomena. Situations are now routinely achieved in which the electronic system is so dominated by interactions that the old concepts of a Fermi liquid are no longer necessarily a good starting point, particularly so in the theory of low-dimensional systems. Disorder is often an unavoidable complication in such systems, leading to a host of rich physical phenomena, which has pushed the forefront of fundamental research to the point where the interplay between many-body correlations and quantum interference enhanced by disorder has become the key to understanding novel phenomena.
The topics included in this volume cover many exciting surprises found in novel nanostructures and low-dimensional devices of submicron size, including quantum interference and electron-electron interactions in transport in metals, semiconductors and superconductors, theories of the Luttinger liquid of electrons in carbon nanotubes, Wigner crystals in 2-D electronic systems, the Kondo effect in quantum dots in the Coulomb blockade regime, quantum chaos in ballistic and disordered microstructures, and mesoscopic effects in superconductors. Experimental papers cover the physics of the Kondo effect in 0-D devices, transport in 1-D nanotubes, magneto-optics of skyrmions and composite fermions in the quantum Hall regime, and a possible metal-insulator transition in 2-D electron and hole gases.

Stop, Drop and Roar.......2003-03-21
This book had me laughing hysterically and all misty with nostalgia for Drop Drills and Los Angeles City Schools lunches with Lethal Jello and Spring Garden Special. A half pint of barely refrigerated milk from the Milk Monitor was five cents and little girls wore dresses with itchy petticoats. Liam takes us back to those days of the Saturday Kiddy Matinee at the theater where you could OD on cartoons and B movies for fifty cents with the added pleasure of throwing JuJuBees at your friends. I enjoyed going back to that simple, gentle time of LA in the 50's. One caveat: Make sure you sit with your knees together or you can bet that Liam is working out a way to have a peek at your white cotton JC Penney underwear!
Drinking While Reading.......2003-03-12
My advice is not to drink anything while reading this book. That's because just when you think it's safe to take a sip, you'll find yourself convulsed with laughter so whatever you're drinking will shoot right out of your nose just like it did when you were ten. That's the magic of Tom Ball's writing. He doesn't just relate hysterically funny and touching accounts of ten-year-old Liam's adventures. He makes you feel like you're ten all over again.
I laughed and cried and loved every minute of the Marty Graw Book. I think I'll go read it again.
