      Book Description

Barry Oshry explains why so many of our efforts to create more satisfying and productive human systems end in disappointment, lost opportunities, broken relationships, and failed partnerships. Oshry shows how these breakdowns are the predictable outcomes of an uninspected system life. This book provides us with a new set of lenses with which to view these systemic relationships and patterns, enabling us to recognize and stop destructive patterns of behavior.

This book provides an elegant framework for understanding our behavior in human systems. It is accessible and powerful.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! I feel as if I was blind and now I SEE........2003-03-28

I read this book about 6 years a go as a part of my graduate program on organizational learning. My reaction at that time was, "Wow! I feel as if I was blind and Now I See!." It was like I gained a secret lens through which the organizational behaviors were making more sense to me. I felt so enthralled with the book, I called the number on the back of the book to inquire how I could explore, experience and learn the Seeing Systems concepts further. I have not done that before or since. 6 years later, I still feel Barry Oshry's teachings are one of real gems in understanding organizations and their behavior mysteries. I have integrated these concepts into my own ways of thinking and being and use them to generate partnerships for impact. I most highly recommend this book to anyone who works with organizations including executives, organizational developers and change agents.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting way of seing systems.......2003-03-27

A first rate professional book. It deals with complex issues in a clear, intelligent and original way. The book offers a lot of added value to both consultants and managers. I find myself leafing through it many times, never failing to find new insights. The book contains both a thorough theoretical analysis and practical tools and concrete tips for dealing with tough issues that impact organizations, such as power, accountability and the "positional trap" . The book is full of inpiring insights on the possibilities of making organizations more robust through empowering people. After reading the book, we cannot help it but seing systems in a new and refreshing way.

5 out of 5 stars Human Systems are Keys to Partnership and collaboration.......2003-03-27

I first struggled with the concepts because I am a student of organizational systems via Deming and the like. But this is a completely different viewpoint that provides a fantastic complement to the work of Deming, Weisbord and others looking at Open-systems theory.

If you want to see the impact of Human Systems and the dynamics that influence an organizations ability to partner, collaborate, and move beyond the powerful vaccuum of the human behaviors that stall organizational growth, this will provide a whole new way to view the relationships of people, power, and personal leadership within open-systems.

Mr. Cummings is right about the simplicity of the book in his review, it IS cartoon like at places. But let's be reminded how icons have changed the computer world and have worked to connect with people who need to remember things clearly, simply, and practically. People are visual learners and this book takes advantage of that reality. It's not written to be an IQ test - but to be clear and concise in boiling down the intricate and delicate issues, and choices, of human interaction in organizations.

It focuses on helping the reader learn and apply. If that works for you - make it so.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! What insight........2003-03-27

As an organization change and transformation practitioner, I am often confronted with the initial overwhelming complexity of a new client organization. Seeing Systems provided me with a set of tools that make my life easier and interventions more effective.

Simplistic? One might think so. But, you'd be wrong. I believe it to be a distillation of truths of organization theory. It's pure genius. The author understands organizations so well he is able to convey it to others in an understandable context. Oshry brings to life the consequences of being in different positions of power in the organization.

I have taken his model and use it to look at each of my clients. It gives significant insight to understand why the organization works; why it doesn't and what to do.

Read Seeing Systems atleast twice. After the first reading, go to work. What are the behaviors? How effective are the relationships? What are the outcomes? Now read Seeing Systems again. Go back into your organization. Observe the relationships. Apply the model. Predict the outcomes. You'll probably be right. Can't ask much more from a book.

By the way, after reading Seeing Systems, I participated in a one-day workshop Oshry presented to the Dallas-Fort Worth Organization Development Network. I wasn't disappointed. He is, that good.

Angle of Impact is probably not the best book for legal thriller addicts to take on their next airplane flight, but for terra firma reading it is strong, fact-packed, and very gripping. Philadelphia lawyer Bonnie MacDougal takes a real-life collision between a light plane and a helicopter over a suburban park and turns it into a personal and professional challenge for her fictional counterpart, Philadelphia lawyer Dana Svenssen. As she did in her first novel, Breach of Trust, MacDougal sprinkles just the right amount of detail about civil liability and forensic evidence into her exciting stew.

      Book Description

Dana Svenssen, a brilliant, overworked Philadelphia lawyer, is on her way to a routine business meeting when her carefully ordered world detonates. The helicopter carrying her client collides with an airplane directly over the amusement park where Dana's two daughters are spending the day on a class trip. As fiery debris rains down on screaming families, Dana desperately races to the scene to find her children. Then, in the frantic aftermath, she discovers that the tragic accident isn't an accident.

Yet determining the probable cause of the collision is near impossible--until a kidnapping suddenly throws Dana into the maelstrom of a deadly, all-consuming conspiracy. . . .

3 out of 5 stars Viewpoint disguised as a novel.......2002-05-16

Dana Svenssen is a corporate lawyer who has a very bad day. A Pennsteel helicopter has crashed with a private plane right over Alpine Valley, an amusement park. What makes this bad is that Dana was talking on her cell phone to her client who was in the helicopter. What makes it even worse is that her two daughters were at a field trip at the amusement park.

She wastes no time and rushes to Alpine Valley to look for her children. Once she ascertains that they are fine she gets to work. Dana starts collecting evidence and taking pictures of the site for the class action lawsuit Pennsteel is likely to face. There is someone who does not want her to succeed and it will do whatever it takes to stop her. The story gets intense and has an O. Henry twist at the end of the novel.

When the story reaches its resolution the author uses the novel as an editorial for class action lawsuits. She writes how big companies are forced to make budget costs in order to pay for lawyers defending them in all kind of lawsuits. Ms. MacDougal makes some interesting points but all this rhetoric loses the entertainment value the book might have had.

5 out of 5 stars The story is clear, keeps moving at a good pace, detailed........1999-11-16

Flowing storyline with well developed characters and scenes. Action keeps rolling with very few lulls. About as deep as a Grisham novel, with ample twists and turns. Very good narration with emphatic voice characterizations and distinct personalities. Hard to put down.

I had already read Breach of promise and hurried out to find Angle of Impact. I sent in the coupon in the back of the book and was thrilled the other day when my autographed copy came in by Federal Express. I am usually not lucky enough to win and I consider thi a real win! It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A228163. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Navy's Impact Burial Prediction Model creates a two dimensional time history of a bottom mine as it falls through air, water, and sediment. The output of the model is the predicted burial depth of the mine in the sediment in meters, as well as height, area and volume protruding. Model input consists of environmental parameters and mine characteristics, as well as parameters describing the mine's release. The model user seldom knows many of these parameters, and those that are known may be of questionable precision. In order to determine which parameters had the greatest effect on the model and which could be simplified or eliminated, a series of sensitivity tests were performed. It was found that the model data ingest could be greatly simplified without sacrificing accuracy too much. However, several parameters including sediment shear strength were found to have a large effect on the model and were investigated flirter.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Advances in technology in the Navy, specifically its IT-21 initiative, and academic setback rates in high-tech ratings raises concern about the level of computer literacy in Navy accessions. This study examines household income data, computer, telephone, and on-line penetration rate data by socioeconomic level, student computer use data, and data from the DoD's Survey of Recruit Socioeconomic Background. These data were analyzed for relationships between recruit socioeconomic status (SES) background and computer literacy. Findings here show that individuals from lower socioeconomic strata have less access to computers and computer technology, and Navy accessions come from lower SES backgrounds. Therefore, they can be expected to have lower computer skills upon entering the Navy. This implies the Navy should consider adding basic computer/tt skills training at boot camp and follow-on computer and tt training at a Sailor's apprentice level ("A" school) training.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The objective of this study is to examine the impact of county-level economic conditions on the recruiting market for the U.S. Armed Forces. This thesis establishes and analyzes the relationship between various demographic variables and recruiting at the county-level. Previous research in this area has dealt with data from various sources and at an aggregated level. It has looked across states, and across time periods, with some studies mixing data on the pre-AVF era with data from the AVF era. Much of the prior research examines a demand issue by looking at those who have already entered military service. This study examines data on individual military applicants. The data on applicants was provided by DMDC for a three-year period, 1993-1995. The individual applicant data is then aggregated to the county-level for analysis and county characteristics are used to explain the variation in applicants across counties. This study is the first to examine the applicant file.

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A474624. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Hyperspectral data collection and analysis is an increasing priority with the growing need to obtain greater classification precision than offered by traditional spatial imagery. In this thesis, trends in hyperspectral chromotomographic reconstruction are explored where reconstruction is performed using a series of spatial-chromatic images. Chromotomography involves capturing a series of two-dimensional images where each image is created by placing a prism in front of the focal plane array; causing spectral dispersion corresponding to a series of prism angles over a single rotation. Before testing reconstruction, synthetic data is produced, approximating what would be produced from prism dispersion on the focal plane array. The pseudo-inverse singular matrix problem is addressed where two methods are compared to find which produces minimal error. The standard iterative error reduction algorithm, SVD- POCS, is shown to be incapable of reconstructing the mean of the source scene, making absolute radiometry analysis impractical. However, SVD-POCS is shown to provide the least error if the goal is to perform relative radiometry analysis. Additional constrains are needed to make absolute radiometry analysis possible. The added constraints of non-negativity, spatial extent of the cold field stop, forcing the sum, and keeping the mean for each iteration improves absolute radiometric performance. These additional constraints also allow use of a warm field stop to monitor reconstruction error for both the pseudo-inverse and iterative improvement algorithm.

Model input consists of environmental parameters and mine characteristics, as well as parameters describing the mine's release. In order to run a realistic validation of the model, an experiment was conducted using a simulated mine and carefully controlled observations while simultaneously taking gravity cores. The model was then run and calculated results were compared to observed. Final results showed the model tended to over predict burial depth by an order of magnitude due to a lack of sensitivity to hydrodynamic effects in the water column.

                        Description:
Gridding artifacts between observations and predefined grid cells strongly influence the local spatial properties of MODIS images. The sensor observation in any grid cell is only partially derived from the location of the cell, with the average overlap between observations and their grid cells being less than 30%. This mismatch between grid cells and observations has strong implications for the use of reference data for the validation of MODIS products or the training of MODIS algorithms. When generating multidate composites, gridding artifacts introduce bias when spectral compositing criteria are used. Also, results indicate that the ability to generate consistent long-term remote sensing records is dependent on both consistent sensing scenarios (spectral bands, view angle distributions, geolocation error) as well as consistent compositing approaches. The band-to-band registration for the different spatial resolutions of gridded MODIS data can be poor if the different resolutions of data are gridded before aggregation. In all cases it is imprecise to characterize the subpixel properties of the coarser resolution bands using the finer resolution bands due to poor correspondence in the areas from which the observations are derived. All of the band-to-band registration problems are minimized when the MODIS data are aggregated to coarser resolutions. When validating algorithm accuracy, available data on the observation dimensions and the offsets between the grid cell and the observation should be included to ensure the quality of validation results. If this information is not available, MODIS data should be aggregated to coarser resolutions to improve the correspondence between the location of observations and grid cells.

The author takes physics equations, labouriously discovered over centuries, in terrestrial environments. He applies them logically to the vastly different circumstances of a star. Yet, step by step, he shows how we can arrive at an understanding of stellar processes that jibes with much that was observable in the 1930s. A tribute to the precision and insight of his thinking, as well as to the power of physics to model phenomena anywhere in the universe.

Actually, in the subsequent decades, the equations derived in the book held up quite well as coherent explanations of stars. While the field has moved on, the explanatory pedagogy given in this book may still often be seen in recent astrophysics texts.

                              Book Description

"Dazzling...A feast. Absorbing and elegantly written, it tells of theorigins of life on earth, describes its variety and charaacter, and culminates in a discussion of human nature and teh complex traces ofhumankind's evolutionary past...It is an amazing story masterfully told."
                              FINANCIAL TIMES (LONDON)
World renowned scientist Carl Sagan and acclaimed author Ann Druyan have written a ROOTS for the human species, a lucid and riveting account of how humans got to be the way we are. It shows with humor and drama that many of our key traits--self-awareness, technology, family ties, submission to authority, hatred for those a little different from ourselves, reason, and ethics--are rooted in the deep past, and illuminated by our kinship with other animals. Astonishing in its scope, brilliant in its insights, and an absolutely compelling read, SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS is a triumph of popular science.

                              5 out of 5 stars Truly a page turner............2007-05-11

This is the most readable scientific book I have read in many years.
And what a subject:Taking on the history of life and making it a page turner! Truly a work of great intellect, art and love. Would that more scientists had the ability to communicate as Carl Sagan and Ann Druyen do in this amazing book.

                              5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book.......2007-02-20

Although a Carl Sagan fan since I was a student, I never heard of this book. I learned about it by hearing it mentioned on a radio show on NPR. I am now about halfway through it, and I can't believe that I never read this book before. A required read for anyone interested in science, and more specifically, our place as humans in terms of the larger cosmos. Well-written, insightful, and containing page after page of beautiful connections and observations.

                              4 out of 5 stars Replication Bomb.......2006-12-21

"Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" takes as its subject nothing less than the origin of life on Earth. The book is epic in scope, ranging from the gravitational collapse of interstellar clouds and the evolution of solar systems to the first appearance of self-replicating molecules on Earth. Probably starting between 4 and 3.5 billion years ago, the initial self-replicating molecules - having arisen by a chain of random processes - initiated the essentially non-random processes of natural selection and the story goes on from there.

The story that Sagan and Druyan are telling is about us, the human animal: where we come from and what ancestral `shadows' follow us and as a result of these considerations, where we are headed. Instead of portraying a nature `red in tooth and claw', Sagan and Druyan show how cooperation is a key feature of life, beginning with the earliest stromatolite colonies. This theme is carried forward and explored in later chapters which examine the bases of ethics, altruism, compassion and caring in our primate relatives. The book also examines the roots of aggression, xenophobia, and dominance hierarchies and the prevalence of these phenomena in the primate world especially.

This is an engaging and educational read, well worth the reader's effort. However, there are also several drawbacks that deserve to be mentioned. Sagan and Druyan go to considerable lengths to convince the reader of the similarities between humans and the other primate species. They especially stress the close genetic relationship between humans and chimpanzees and point out that while humans have consistently tried to erect barriers between themselves and the nonhuman animals, these barriers are illusory. For example, language is often mentioned as the sole preserve of Homo sapiens. And yet, studies with vervet monkeys and experiments with chimpanzees and bonobos have demonstrated that a rudimentary capacity for language (including the ability to perform abstractions) exist in species besides humans. The point that Sagan and Druyan are trying to make is that we humans vary from the other animals not so much in kind (quality), but rather in degree (quantity). This point is well taken but in emphasizing the similarities between humans and other animals (including our close primate relatives) we should not be overly zealous in the other direction. There are many similarities between humans and chimpanzees, sure, but there are also obvious, non-trivial differences that likewise deserve to be mentioned. After all, unlike the chimpanzees, who to present day inhabit the same environments that their million-year old ancestors have inhabited, humans have spread to just about every part of the globe and are actively exploring the near reaches of the universe. The tendency to emphasize the close genetic relationship between humans and chimpanzees while glossing over the differences is rampant in popular books about human evolution (for example, Jared Diamond's "The Third Chimpanzee").

"Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" is subtitled as a `Search for Who We Are', aiming to give an account of the `orphan's file' (the orphan being the human race). However, the book is primarily devoted to the discussion of nonhuman animals, with no mention of important human landmarks such as the discovery of agriculture, for example, and the rise of civilizations and states. To be fair, the authors acknowledge this in the book's epilogue, with the promise that the story remains to be continued. Another drawback is that the book's first few chapters, which give an account of the birth of our sun and the emergence of our planet, are not quite convincing - emphasizing poetic eloquence perhaps somewhat to the detriment of giving a clear account.

Despite the drawbacks this is recommended reading, along with Sagan's "The Dragons of Eden: Speculations on the Evolution of Human Intelligence." Sagan may have his share of detractors but his ability in making science accessible was commendable.

                              5 out of 5 stars My bible.......2006-10-07

I devoured this book and I want to pass my copy onto everyone that I think can benefit from reading it, which is everyone. Taking a quote from Fight Club, "we are not special," sure that's not completey true, we are a little special but we are also MORE just like every other animal.

If you're interested in evolution, anthropology, archaeology, and/or any other related field, check this book out. Or even better yet challenge a fundy to read it.

                              5 out of 5 stars Important book..........2006-01-02

I think this is a very important book. Honest and direct to the point. After reading this book with an open mind you'll have to ponder and evaluate all the things that you believe in out of fear or faith.
Yes, your existence is an accident. Maybe the whole human race was an accident. Nature doesn't care about justice and life just move ahead without a plan and sometimes this process of selection or of survival of the fittest brings out "good" results but we also see the bad ones....So ...use your days, enjoy the life you have and respect your fellow travelers in this tiny planet...and be certain that when you die you will go back to where you were before you were born.... into nothingness..
Your genes will live in your children and that is all there is to it...

                                                  Book Description

A brilliantly constructed satire of the 100 Years War. The funniest book since 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'! This book follows the adventures of twin brothers and a band of misfits through France and England.

This book is funny, very funny. It is so funny that I could go on talking about how funny it is for hours, but you would get borred and rather drowsy. If you are looking for cynical look at the one hundred years war with HEAVY influence by Monty Python and The Simpsons, this book is for you, if not, you should still buy it anyway!
