Same Old Information, Not Organized.......2001-04-25
With retirement just 11 years off I thought I would start reading up on the subject. Hey, you can't know too much. So I've been perusing Amazon for promising titles. When I got to this one it looked like I had found a book with answers. Yikes, was I mistaken.
This is a waste of time for anyone who has any kind of life. It's just a tired old retelling of information that you can get free from the Social Security department and Medicare. The rest of what you might need to know about retirement planning is far better explained in other, more general personal finance books or by seeing a financial planner.

Fits my life and circumstances.......2000-12-19
Too many retirement books offer advice that is not practical for me. Usually I am pleased to find ONE idea that I can act on in these financial advice books. Hoffman's book provided over 11 ideas that make sense at my age and financial circumstances. The practical advice is based on real life examples collected from a wholesome variety of folks. The 54 stories provide a window on the lives of regular people eager to maintain a sense of control over their financial lives - without the "get rich" quick flavor of many financial books.
Maybe Hoffman can go on and help her readers address our concerns re handling the health care services we will need in our future.

This book tells you what you can actually DO about catching up for retirement without overloading the reader with numbers and complex theories based on somebody else's speculation about the long-term health of the economy. It's both readable and motivational, and there are lots of useful leads to help you get free, unbiased information on everything from how Social Security works, to how to find an old bank account or pension you forgot about.

The Big Bang for non-physicists.......2006-08-25
If you are looking for an enjoyable, accessible introduction to the science behind the Big Bang theory, then this book is for you. Non-specialists need not fear being put to sleep by complex mathematical formulae and arcane terminology. Dr. Jastrow lays out the basic evidence for the theory in a non-technical way and explains why it gained acceptance over the competition. Along the way he provides interesting glimpses of the important figures in the history of the theory.
On the negative side, there isn't a great deal of discussion of the relation of Big Bang cosmology to theism until the end of the book. Appropriately, it includes afterwords by a Catholic scientist and a Jewish professor of religion presenting their take on the implications of the theory for theology, but they hardly represent the broad spectrum of opinion on the subject. On the positive side, the sparse theological discussion makes this great primer for anyone who wants to know about the Big Bang even if they don't care about theology.

God and the Astronomers:
In his informing updated book, Dr. Robert Jastrow, a world class astrophysicist, renders a lucid account of the astronomical discoveries in recent years. This book focuses primarily on the Big Bang, how scientists discovered the evidence for it, and how they, reluctantly, gave up alternative theories. Jastrow focuses on several points where the two disciplines of science and religion converge, but a cyclic feedback is kept alive. He, meanwhile, discusses the various theological implications of the new scientific insights. He examines what the philosophical and theological implications might be. He ventures through this without risking any serious consequences, for mankind's place in the cosmos, arguing that; just because the Big Bang took place does not mean that God and evolution cannot coexist.
Originally published in 1978, this second edition includes an appendix presentation by Catholic and Jewish theologians.
He concludes his book with this often quoted statement: "He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries."

It is not what the title reads.......2005-08-02
I expected arguments, analysis and reasoning between the vision of God from the religious point of view constrasted with the vision of God from scientists.
Instead of this, I found the biographies of Einstein, Hubble, and other scientists. And the main subject, the reason of the book is found in the last chapter. If you want to read the book in a flash, just read last parragraph on page 138. That's it.
Deceiving.
Well written.......2003-04-15
Read this book if you have an interest in Astronomy or how astronomy relates to God. Jastrow presents a plausible view for how the universe began. What makes this book special is Jastrow's views on God and on the universe.
Robert Jastrow is certainly not a Christan, and never proclaims to be. The God Jastrow argues for is very secular and can accomadate many religions. And perhaps that is the what makes his views special.
Much of what Jastrow says about the universe and how it had to have a beginning and a creator is very revealing. Jastrow has some famous quotes in this book that you may have read elsewhere. For this purporse alone the book is worth reading. One of the more famous views comes from his story of a philsopher trying to prove that God does not exist. The philsopher for years has come up against this unbearable mountain called God and just when it appears they are read to scale the mountain and proclaim victory, another mountain twice the orignal's size pops up. Jastrow argues that this second mountain is unaviodable and unclimbable. Because this is unacceptable for some, many chose ot ignore it or dismiss it. However, despite their efforts the mountain is still there and as Jastow points out, the mountian is there for good. Calling this mountain the Big Bang does not solve anything, rather it avoids the issue altogether.
Very well written. If you have not read books on astronomy do not worry. Nothing to complicated here, so you can dive right in.
Created Universe.......2001-07-09
With this excellent book, Robert Jastrow has written a good, easily understood overview of the Argument for Design from the perspective of cosmology. He first presents the reasons why there is a consensus among scientist for the Big Bang theory and an expanding universe (particularly convincing is Penzias/Wilson's radiation from the cosmic fireball). The universe is not only expanding, it is doing so at a controlled rate that allows for intelligent life (a bit faster start would have lead to rapid expansion, slower leading to an early collapse). He then leads the reader to the obvious questions raised by the new cosmology; who did it and why. Why did the Universe begin in an explosion? Did the Universe exist before that moment? Why does the Universe seem designed for life and for man? A nice extra is the final chapter by Steven Katz; Judaism, God and the Astronomers. He argues that Judaism permits freedom of ideas, and that interpretation of Biblical texts is a long tradition. He quotes Maimonides, saying that the writers of Genesis used metaphors, "in order that the uneducated may comprehend it according to the measure of their facilities and the feebleness of their comprehension; while the educated take it in a different (i.e., allegorical or nonliteral) sense." Other nice extras include the many historical photos as well as an index.

Dealing with the Unknowns? Then, this is the book for you........2004-06-28
Invariably, the final semister/quarter of General Chemistry involves determining the ions contained in an unknown solution. This can be a frustrating time for a student, which is in many instances due to the lack of clearly written and understandable laboratory procedures. When I took the class, I thankfully had a savvy professor who utilized this book (the Sixth edition) as the sole laboratory procedures. As a consequence, I did well in the lab (grade was an A) and had a positive experience.
As a teaching assistant in graduate school, I recalled how useful this book was and developed my lectures based on its content (the Chemistry department at that university utilized its own "home grown" book of procedures which were sadly lacking in clarity). This book contains much of the necessary background in reaction kinetics, solution phenomenon, and ionic properties for each group that a student needs to perform and understand the experiments. Two of the most important and indispensable aspects of this book are the flow charts and the questions in each chapter. The flow charts provide a clear, overall picture of the procedures and are easy to follow. I implemented flow charts similar to these in my class with much success. Many of my students copied those flow charts and gave them to classmates in other laboratory sections. The questions were VERY helpful in clarifying how separations of the ions could be successfully achieved and the importance of reaction conditions during these separations. The questions, or variations of them, also made good lab quiz questions. (Hint, hint.) I highly recommend answering the questions prior to performing the lab to give yourself a better idea of what to expect when following the procedures. With this book and good laboratory techniques, you should have no problem acing the Unknowns.

Fascinating..........2004-09-15
Depicting the shocking Ruthton, Minnesota murders of 1983, Andrew Malcolm manages to capture the very essence of the tale. Without bias or personal prejudice, he clearly and simply paints a picture of two bankers, their families and the men caught up in the whirlwind farm crisis of the 1980's. Taking the time accurately depict the Midwest and her people, he delves into the past to bring to light the personal motivations and conflicts between the two groups that eventually simmered over as a father and son decided to take the law into their own hands.
Andrew Malcolm does a great job remaining unbiased throughout the narrative, while still touching on the possible motivations, not only of the murderers, but also of the bankers themselves. Like a true storyteller, he knows how to keep his audience on the hook, concluding with a flourish that leaves the reader breathless in its entirety.
Compelling.......1999-03-09
This is an extremely well-written account of a very unusual crime -- the killing of a banker by a farmer he foreclosed upon. It does a fabulous job of showing the monetary links between farming and banking, and of delving into the personalities involved. The story line is maybe a bit thin -- two guys killed by a father-and-son who blame the bankers for their troubles -- and the author really makes the most of it.
For anyone who likes true-life, non-fiction stories, this is a good one.
