Book Description

Jeffrey Archer, the internationally bestselling author of Honor Among Thieves, As The Crow Flies, and Kane amp; Abel, now serves up this inventive new collection of a dozen short stories -- with a twist. Cleverly styled, with richly drawn characters and ingeniously plotted story lines, each of the twelve pieces ends with a delightfully unexpected turn of events. An imprisoned man is certain that his supposed murder victim is very much alive......A female driver is pursued relentlessly by a menacing figure in another vehicle......A young artist gets the biggest break of her career......A restless beauty manages the perfect birthday celebration......An escaped Iraqi on Saddam Hussein's death list pays an involuntary visit to his homeland. In each tale, human beings are given an opportunity to seize, a crucial problem to solve, or a danger to avoid. How will they react? How would you? Capping off the collection are two additional rewards. In the final story, Archer offers a choice of four endings. And buried in each story is another diversion -- a red herring which Archer challenges his readers to uncover.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-05-02

The 12 stories in this book are all readable. Some of the stories are brilliant -- for e.g. One man's meat where the reader is presented with 4 different outcomes.

The thing I liked about all his stories inspite of some of them not having an "a-ha" at the ending was the engaging style of Mr. Archer that keeps you turning the pages.

The writing style is consistent and the set of stories is way above your ordinary short stories.

4 out of 5 stars 12 good tales.......2003-06-30

Jeffrey Archer's 'Twelve Red Herrings' are imaginative, well-written short stories. Archer (now Lord Archer, the variously popular-then-disgraced-then-popular-currently-disgraced Tory almost-leader) is better known for his novels, but has proven himself to be a good author of short stories as well.

Each of the twelve tales in the collection contains an unexpected twist in the character or outcome, something that Archer is good at providing in most plots he's written. Archer seems to have the knack of taking one idea and spinning it, like a spider's web coming from one small strand, into a very fine and very wide reaching net that catches you and keeps you involved until the end.

In 'Cheap at Half the Price' we are introduced to Consuela Rosenheim, a woman with expensive tastes which require both a wealthy husband and wealthy lover to satisfy, working in concert but each unwitting of the other. Her procurement of a necklace is a wonderful story.

In 'Trial and Error' we follow Cooper on an ingenious plot for revenge, to finally carry out the murder for which he has already been sentenced and convicted, knowing that due to the construct of the law, the murder cannot be punished (he has already been convicted and served his time).

The final story is my favourite, and of course you will, as I did, read all the endings: Archer provides a brief tale of desire-at-first-sight and the variations on the theme; how will it turn out? A question we often ask in life, and wonder will it end up well done or burnt to a crisp? Using this analogy, 'One Man's Meat...' follows a man who sees a beautiful woman while driving by, and stops to pursue her. What will happen? Is she single or married? Is HE single or married? Will she be flattered or offended? In the four alternate endings to this tale, the reader experiences each alternative.

This is good bedtime reading, as most of the stories can be finished in under half-an-hour. For those who have not read Archer before, this is a good introduction to his storytelling style. This will not be confused for great literature, but is definitely a good yarn.

5 out of 5 stars Good stories.......2002-12-19

Is the first book of stories that I really like, there is one finish that I didn't like at all, the story of the painter. Is also the first time that I can select what finish I like from a story, let me tell you that if I can change the end of some books I will.
All the stories are easy to read and have their own message (except the story of the painter, or maybe I didn't understood it.)

4 out of 5 stars Good for my 1st Archer book.......2001-12-03

I consider this compilation of fast-paced short stories to be a good read. If critics say this is not one of Archer's best, then, I look forward to reading his other materials.

Compared with Roald Dahl's Tale of the Unexpected, which is also a compilation of short stories, I prefer this one more.

3 out of 5 stars Some were good... and some were not........2001-07-16

Basically, some of the stories were great, and others were pretty awful. That's why this book only gets 3 stars.

The point of the book is that all the stories are supposed to have surprise endings, and some of them do. About 70% of the stories succeeded in keeping my interest and provided me with an unexpected ending. However, some of them left me wondering "well, what was the point of that?"

Another downside is that after so many 'surprise endings', you start to know what to expect, and you when you start looking for the clue about what's to come, you can usually figure out what the 'surprise' will be.

Overall, it's a good book to read if you want to be lightly entertained. You will be treated to some exceptional story telling, and some time wasting trash, which is certainly not the trademark of Jeffery Archer. I was happy with the book and you will be too, if you are willing to overlook the few bad parts and allow yourself to enjoy the rest.

5 out of 5 stars Read this before your behavioral interview.......2006-07-27

This book was superb. It specifically addresses traditional interviews and then behavioral interviews. It clearly gives you 50 questions to expect and the great, so-so and poor responses. The ROI on this book for the interviewee has to be very high.

5 out of 5 stars With a little imagination, you can ace the interview.......2005-07-15

I worked at a Fortune 500 computer company that used behavioral interviewing (where the interviewer says "Tell me about a time . . .").

If you read this book and Carole's examples, you can see how to present your experience in a way that impresses. My wife is a book editor and although the book doesn't cover this particular career, we went over her experiences and created a way to talk about them.

Unless you were a corporate drone who never though outside the box (or even much inside it) you can point out the ways where you added a little extra to the way you did the job. If you can't think of such remarks you're just appear to be a faceless job applicant who has no worthwhile features, no matter what your real experiences.

The way to use this book is to read all the examples, and especially take note of the best and second-best way of giving an answer. Eventually you'll learn what to say for any interview.

I'd rather not have to say something like "Oh yes, I always worked hard at my last job" (which is not 100 percent true and sounds phoney). I'd rather use the behavioral technique and say that a co-worker went in on a Saturday to make up a couple of hours, found that a huge amount of work had been dumped on us, and split the work by e-mailing half of it to me at home, which took up most of my time on that weekend (which actually was true).

I know which one would impress an employer.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice, But Needs Wider Range of Examples.......2005-04-28

This is one of the few interviewing books that covers the new trend, "behavioral interviews". Martin gives specific examples and then explains why particular answers are best, which is very effective. She also gives some helpful advice about behavioral interviews in general.

However, her examples are almost all drawn from marketing, sales and management. For someone in these fields, this is probably a plus, but for someone in a different field, the examples became repetitive after a while. Even though her advice can be applied to any job, it would have helped to have some examples from different types of jobs - technical jobs in particular. Even though more people are working in technical fields, books about interviewing don't often address their particular problems and questions.

                          Book Description

It is the contention of this important book that the Iran-United States Tribunal, and other more recent institutions such as the UNCC and the Zurich Dormant Accounts Commission, reflect a growing determination by the international community to recognize the rights of individuals, adjudicating their claims for economic injury even if the redress provided is only approximate or incomplete. Examining the Tribunal's structure, operations and evolution in search of the underlying patterns that characterize such international institutions, this valuable book records the diverse experiences and judgments of a group of outstanding lawyers from many countries, each of whom has played a significant role at some stage of the Tribunal's proceedings.

                          Book Description

This text is intended for undergraduate nonscience majors, satisfying a general education requirement or seeking an elective in natural science. It is a text on physics, but with an emphasis on topics and applications in astronomy; the perspective is thus different from most undergraduate astronomy courses: rather than discussing what one knows about the heavens (and including, where needed, a brief discussion of the necessary physics), this text develops the principles of physics (as one needs them to understand the behavior of matter on Earth) and uses these to illuminate what we see in the heavens. The fundamental principles governing the behavior of matter and energy are thus used to study the solar system, the structure and evolution of stars, and the early universe. The first part of the book develops Newtonian mechanics with an aim of understanding celestial mechanics. Chapters on electromagnetism and elementary quantum theory lay the foundation of the modern theory of the structure of matter and the role of radiation in the constitution of stars. Kinetic theory and nuclear physics provide the basis for a discussion of stellar structure and evolution. And an examination of red shifts and other observational data provide a basis for discussions of cosmology and cosmogony.

4 out of 5 stars The Universe in 300 Pages.......2006-02-23

I am currently teaching an undergraduate-level course titled "Introduction to Astrophysics and Cosmology" at Stevens Institute of Technology, and I am using this book as the text. The course is intended as a science elective for non-physics majors, so my class consists mostly of computer science majors who have had one semester of physics and two semesters of calculus in their freshman year.

The book provides a good summary of the classical mechanics typically taught in "Physics I" and goes on to cover electricity and magnetism, waves and optics, relativity, and atomic physics, all in the context of explaining astrophysical phenomena. As the title implies, this is an elementary physics text first and foremost, with an emphasis on astrophysics. From a practical perspective, it is relatively small, lightweight, and inexpensive (from the lack of color illustrations, I assume), all of which influenced my decision to adopt it for my course.

Here is a list of some other texts that I considered for adoption and have been using as supplemental references:

Carroll, An Introduction to Modern Astrophysics (Addison-Wesley Longman)
Chaisson, Astronomy Today (Pearson Prentice Hall)
Snow, Universe: Origins and Evolution (Wadsworth)

5 out of 5 stars Unique Introduction to Astrophysics - Calculus Not Required.......2003-09-01

Science, mathematics, and engineering majors typically have little time for the more advanced, and more interesting humanities courses. Humanities majors are typically in a worse situation. In addition to scheduling difficulties, most do not have sufficient mathematical maturity to undertake first year classes in physics, chemistry, and calculus, much less the more advanced (and decidedly more interesting) topics like astrophysics, quantum physics, quantum chemistry, and abstract mathematics.

James Seaborn has created a unique text that targets humanities majors - Understanding the Universe, An Introduction to Physics and Astrophysics. Calculus is not necessary; only that level of high school mathematics generally required for college admissions. We learn the principles of physics, not in the standard format (mechanics followed by thermodynamics, vibrations and waves, electromagnetics, optics, and modern physics), but rather in the fascinating context of exploring the universe.

Seaborn does not skirt mathematics and the student will need to work, but no more than would be required in studying the poetry of William Blake, comparative religions, economic causes of the Civil War, the writings of Jorge Luis Borges, or other more advanced classes in the humanities.

Seaborn has that rare and remarkable ability to present complex and difficult topics with clarity and humor. His writing reminds me of Richard Feynman. His chapters are short and easily digestible. The example problems are well-chosen. I highly recommend this text for students looking for an introduction to physics, or astrophysics, or astronomy. It is really quite exceptional. I suspect that many science majors would also appreciate this short introduction to astrophysics.

5 out of 5 stars Astrophysics: the short course........2000-12-06

The best book I've found for brushing up on forgotten math. Each short chapter covers a subject (optics, for example) and states what you really need to know. The problems at the end fortify that which was just taught. Answers are given to most problems but the method to find them is up to you. An excellent self-teaching book for the amateur astronomer who would like to know some of the science involved or for the serious student who needs to reclaim some lost physics. The book focuses on problems peculiar to astrophysics. Small enough to stick in your shoulder-bag and keep with you. One of my must-keep books.

5 out of 5 stars A concise, lucid introduction to the world of astrophysics.......1998-08-11

As a former student of the author, I have a good feel for Dr. Seaborn's work and manner in this field. I find this recent work particularly comprehensive and helpful for those wishing to augment their understanding of physics and astronomy. The level of math is suitable for detailed, logical analysis, but not so challenging that non-majors cannot follow the explanations.

4 out of 5 stars Contains useful supplementary problems.......1998-06-24

As a high school physics and astronomy teacher I think that this book contains good problems to use in both a physics and astronomy class to supplement coursework. I reccommend it for people who want to learn astronomy and physics at their own pace. The book is very readable but a certain level of math is needed to attempt using the book in a course, that is why I cannot use it in my classes.

The fascinating autobiographical reflections of Nobel Prize winner George Olah

How did a young man who grew up in Hungary between the two World Wars go from cleaning rubble and moving pianos at the end of World War II in the Budapest Opera House to winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry? George Olah takes us on a remarkable journey from Budapest to Cleveland to Los Angeles-with a stopover in Stockholm, of course. An innovative scientist, George Olah is truly one of a kind, whose amazing research into extremely strong acids and their new chemistry yielded what is now commonly known as superacidic "magic acid chemistry."

A Life of Magic Chemistry is an intimate look at the many journeys that George Olah has traveled-from his early research and teaching in Hungary, to his move to North America where, during his years in industry, he continued his study of the elusive cations of carbon, to his return to academia in Cleveland, and, finally, his move to Los Angeles, where he built the Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute to find new solutions to the grave problem of the world's diminishing natural oil and gas resources and to mitigate global warming by recycling carbon dioxide into hydrocarbon fuels and products. Professor Olah invites the reader to enjoy the story of his remarkable path-marked by hard work, imagination, and never-ending quests for discovery-which eventually led to the Nobel Prize. Intertwining his research and teaching with a unique personal writing style truly makes A Life of Magic Chemistry an engaging read. His autobiography not only touches on his exhilarating life and pursuit for new chemistry but also reflects on the broader meaning of science in our perpetual search for understanding and knowledge.

Olah's intellectual enthusiasm shines through the pages of his book. In telling his life story, he manages to also convey well his ceaseless curiosity; a never ending search for new and unexpected subtleties in chemistry.

He writes for a broad audience. No degree in chemistry required. He shows how chemistry in general, and his work in particular, has practical applications, that can impact everyday lives, like better fuel efficiency in cars, and lower pollution.

Perhaps the best hope for this book is that it can inspire students still undecided about their majors to seriously consider chemistry.

                          Book Description

It is now fully recognized that the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species in 1859 brought about a revolution in man's attitude toward life and his own place in the universe. This work is rightly regarded as one of the most important books ever published, and a knowledge of it should be part of the intellectual equipment of every educated person. The book remains surprisingly modern in its assertions and is also remarkably accessible to the layman, much more so than recent treatises necessarily encumbered with technical language and professional jargon.

This first edition had a freshness and uncompromising directness that were considerably weakened in later editions, and yet nearly all available reprints of the work are based on the greatly modified sixth edition of 1872. In the only other modern reprinting of the first edition, the pagination was changed, so that it is impossible to give page references to significant passages in the original. Clearly this facsimile reprint of the momentous first edition fills a need for scholars and general readers alike.

I rate this four stars for the binding, not the contents. For a much greater price one can get a finer binding, but if one wishes to read or review the 1859 edition that Darwin rushed into print in order to prevent another putting essentially the same theory forward ahead of him, this is the book. There were a number of additional editions printed during Darwin's lifetime, reflecting later thoughts, but to see his thinking as of 1859, this is a good, and relatively scarce book to own. The copy I received from Amazon does not contain an Introductory essay. The binding appears to be perfect bound, and is a hardback. Contents: 5 stars, Binding: 4 stars

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, but the third edition is recommended.......2005-12-27

Charles Darwin rushed his Origin to press when he became aware that he would be pre-empted with the theory of natural selection by Alfred Russell Wallace. In the course of the following few years he reviewed the manuscript thorougly at least twice. The Third edition is generally the standard. This facsimilie may be interesting for historical reasons, but I recommend the edition with Jilian Huxeley's introduction.

Many people assume that Darwin's initial account of natural selection is so out of date that it is to be avoided in favour of more recent text books of evolutionary theory. While it is true that huge gains have been made in the one and a half centuries since the first publication of "The Origin", there is nothing in this work which is wrong. Darwin was too good a scientist and too cautious.

Some claim that Darwin admitted of the possibility of Lamarkian mechanisms. They have not read the original. Darwin knew nothing of the molecular basis of genetics, but knew that natural selection did not need a Lamarkian mechanism. He simply did not rule it out, although he found it improbable. Everything that is stated in this great classic is as true today as it was at the time of first publication.

It is also said that Charles Darwin was a lesser intellectual when compared to most other great names of science; that he was a plodder, a naturalist, a sort of gentleman stamp collector who pressed flowers into his books and barely a scientist in the contemporary sense. This is nonsense. Darwin was one of the giants of rigorous systematic thinking; the kind of rigorous thinking and critical attitude that asks the right questions and provides the capacity to answer them. Let me buttress this claim with one example.

At the end of chapter six Darwin noted that the theory of natural selection could not account for structures or behaviors found in one species that exist solely for the benefit of another unrelated species. In setting out the theoretical terms for the refutation of the theory in this way, he anticipated Karl Popper, that analytical non-nonsense philosopher of science, by more than a century.

I recommend you read this book with an attentive curious analytical mind. You will find yourself walking in the footsteps of an intellectual giant.

Many love to read science whether it is the newest technological innovations for high definition TV's or we expose to learn more about the unified field theory or String Theory. Science leaves us with alot to explore. What is the scientific equivalent of Shakespeare's Folio's? Or perhaps Cervante's-Don Quioxte's? Many scientist may say Darwin's-Origin of Species. This fascimilie of the 1st edition which is full of elegent prose and vivid descriptions and analogies while later editions are less decisive and espouse more questions than answers is the edition to read. Which is a dated romantic language. So arguably the most important text written in English is also easy to read and understand with little thought primarily to Darwin clear use of prose. It is a book that has been most heavily criticised since its inception and publication in November 29, 1859 but it is now gaining the long overdue momentum accorded the works of Copernicus and Newton. Just bring your imagination along for the splendid ride.

5 out of 5 stars Need to know for cultural literacy.......2005-10-29

This is a quick review of the book not a dissertation on Darwin or any other subject loosely related. At first I did not know what to expect. I already read " The Voyage of the Beagle: Charles Darwin's Journal of Researches". I figured the book would be similar. However I found "Origin" to be more complex and detailed.

Taking in account that recent pieces of knowledge were not available to Charles Darwin this book could have been written last week. Having to look from the outside without the knowledge of DNA or Plate Tectonics, he pretty much nailed how the environment and crossbreeding would have an effect on natural selection. Speaking of natural selection, I thought his was going to be some great insight to a new concept. All it means is that species are not being mucked around by man (artificial selection).

If you picked up Time magazine today you would find all the things that Charles said would be near impossible to find or do. Yet he predicted that it is doable in theory. With an imperfect geological record many things he was not able to find at the writing of this book have been found (according to the possibilities described in the book.)
The only draw back to the book was his constant apologizing. If he had more time and space he could prove this and that. Or it looks like this but who can say at this time. Or the same evidence can be interpreted 180 degrees different.

In the end it is worth reading and you will never look at life the same way again.
