Customer Reviews:
Wonderful study tool.......2004-07-27
These focus notes are a wonderful tool. There are two major reasons why I suggest buying them.
1) It will save you from writing your own flashcards (which would take a whole lot of hours to do (probably many many days)
2) It beats flashcards. I have purchased flashcards before, and the Focus Notes are much better. You tend to get flash cards out of order...or you may lose some of them. The flashcards I bought did not have many examples, just definitions. The focus notes have definitions and examples.
The only caveat. If you are using Becker, I'd buy their flashcards, because they are geared towards their materials. And their materials are excellent, even though expensive. Probably worth it if you have the money.
The Focus Notes correspond to modules in the Wiley Books. However I am using them with Bisk. I just found the chapters in my Bisk books that correspond to the pages in the Focus Notes. It took a few hours to do this, but it wasn't a big deal. Hope this review helps other CPA candidates.

Customer Reviews:
some clarification.......2006-12-21
I felt the need to clarify some of the information that other reviewers have submitted. First of all, Wiley's Focus Notes have worked well for me. As one reviewer suggested, there are abbreviations used. However, these abbreviations are made with the assumption that you have some basic understanding of the material, and you are using these for review. It sounds like the reviewer is using these as his principle method of study. In which case, there are no flash cards out there that would help such an individual, as they are all made for review (not study)
Also, I like the spiral binding. You don't have to worry about losing or misplacing cards. Just make sure you have a paper clip or two to mark your place. Hope this helps. This is a really really good product, and I hate to see it disparaged.
Not very useful.......2006-01-17
These Focus Notes don't provide any additional material beyond what Wiley's CPA review books have. Also, it seems like they overly abbreviate material sometimes in order to fit it on one page. At times, the organization of the information is confusing. Moreover, this is somewhat of an awkward format to work with - no wonder there aren't very many books out there with spiral binding at the top of the page.
The whole point of Wiley books is that they're cheaper than the books you'd get with a review course. Yet, you can get a set of Becker flashcards off eBay for the price of these Focus Notes. I'd go with the flashcards.

CPA Focus Notes.......2005-11-23
I would not have passed the CPA exam without Mark Edward's Focus Notes. They were invaluable.
I wish he would do Focus Notes for the CMA exam.
Good notes, not updated for current CPA Exams........2002-10-14
These focus notes are very useful to get the core concepts to pass the CPA, and in my opinion would relieve the "too much information" problem in the Wiley CPA books series.
In my opinion, these focus notes will be more useful if combined with another text book. Perhaps the Wiley CPA books series have the advantage of faster cross referencing, since they have the same module division.
If you are a Beckerconviser student, I would recommend that you buy their flash cards...(yes they started selling their own flash cards to their students in fall 2002).
One last note, if you are buying the second edition of the focus notes and using them to attend coming CPA exams,BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT UPDATED!!!.
Examples of outdated notes in the financial accounting and reporting section are:
1. in the Intangible assets section (40 years is not any more the maximum useful life for intangible assets), and
2. the treatment of discontinued operations in the financials.
I gave it a 3 stars score because of the update issue.
Business Law Focus Notes.......2001-05-09
I used the Focus Notes to assist in preparing for the May 2001 Business Law portion of the CPA exam. I made additional notes on the Focus Notes as I read my textbook and as I completed practice exams. I felt I saved a lot of time I might have wasted making my own flash cards, and the logical format of the Focus Notes helped to clarify the information for me.
I felt great after I completed the exam, and I highly recommend the Business Law Focus Notes as part of your studying.

Book Description
Critical Legal Theory and the Challenge of Feminism provides both a thorough overview and a refinement of the ideas that underlie critical legal theory. Arguing with the rigor of analytic philosophy and the alertness to paradoxes characteristic of deconstructive philosophy, Matthew Kramer begins by exploring the tangled relations between metaphysics and politics. He then attempts to transform the discourses of the critical legal studies movement by laying out a framework of five general themes: contradictions, contingency, patterning, perspective, and ideology. Kramer calls for a more sophisticated awareness of their paradoxes, explaining why the paradoxes are by no means disabling or demobilizing. Finally, Kramer explores some of feminist theory's major controversies and problems, and argues that feminist theory can profit greatly by giving due attention to inescapable paradoxes. The book is an important contribution to political philosophy, jurisprudence, feminist philosophy and metaphysics, with powerful implications for epistemology and literary theory.
Book Description
In the winter of 2001, Charles Laird Calia lay down on the lawn in his front yard, looked up at the sky, and rediscovered a childhood passion. Part primer on the science and history of astronomy, part love poem to the night sky, The Stargazing Year is this amateur astronomer's memoir of a year spent gazing upward. In chapters spanning the twelve months of the night sky, the author invites readers to discover the mystery and beauty of stargazing.
Throughout the world, on any given night, thousands of people direct their telescopes to the heavens. Two centuries ago, an amateur observer was largely up against himself and his optics. Now, much of that has changed and, with the affordable equipment available today, amateur astronomers have made inroads in the study of variable stars, novas, and eclipsing binaries that have proven to be immensely valuable to scientists. Calia elegantly weaves the history of amateur astronomy and astronomers with his own personal story of how, one starlit evening when he was in his early forties, the galaxy opened its arms to him again. The Stargazing Year is a paean to the universe and its many mysteries.
Customer Reviews:
Reads like Cotton Candy, lacks a solid center.......2006-07-15
I found Calia's book interesting a first, but quickly tiresome. The writing is a bit amatuerish, with sachrine prose more likely found in a romance novel, almost, as Calia would say, "desperately so." All in all, I found it a bit too fluffy. It constantly runs off on romantic or nostalgic tangents dotted with a little history or science to hold it together, but never enough to be satisfying in my opinion. And some of the true comedy of being an astronomer is completely lacking. I can't say that I would truly recommend this book.
Serendipity! Charles Calia has written a gem of a book!.......2005-07-10
In the opening sentence of his "Conclusion" to The Critique of Practical Reason (1788), the German philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) wrote: "Two things fill the mind with ever-increasing wonder and awe, the more often and the more intensely the mind of thought is drawn to them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me."
In The Stargazing Year, Charles Laird Calia, while apparently having no significant quarrel with "the moral law within," writes of how his imagination was hooked at an early age in Pennsylvania and Minnesota by wonder, admiration, and awe at "the starry heavens above," and how he came full circle, after the passage of half a lifetime, to his fascination with the stars, his own return to the eternal return of the night sky.
Tracing the trajectories of the heavens, he simultaneously traces the trajectory of his own life: "Nostalgia is part and parcel of the human condition, a natural gift of aging, and it protects us from the message that the universe telegraphs to us with frightening accuracy. You are small and will soon be forgotten."
A frequent contributor to Sky & Telescope magazine, Calia is a member of the American Association of Variable Star Observers, the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers, and the British Astronomical Association. He now lives in Connecticut with his wife and two daughters, where he has built a backyard observatory.
Calia divides The Stargazing Year into 12 chapters, January through December, cataloguing the transit of the seasons from winter to autumn, and the changing constellations of the heavens.
Stumbling across Calia's work is a remarkable example of serendipity, a fortunate discovery, for The Stargazing Year is charmingly written, insightfully informative, and delightfully funny--a gem of a book.
Escaping from the planetary pull of his mother's obsession with astrology, Calia developed an obsession of his own, a passion for and love of astronomy. Under the watchful eye of his wife, who keeps a close watch over family expenditures, Calia's account of building his backyard observatory is hilarious, as he fumbles and flounders his way through the daunting construction, with help from the guy in the orange jacket at Home Depot.
The book is star-studded with arresting metaphors, similes, and analogies and an ingratiating self-deprecating humor. Think the staccato-voiced words of Rod Serling. Think the bucolic poetic lyricism of Robert Frost. Think the sly wit and wisdom of Mark Twain. Think the whimsy and zany inventiveness of Douglas Adams. Think the contagious enthusiasm and passion of Carl Sagan.
"Love can bring us a long distance," writes Calia, "if we take notice. I finally did. Throughout a celestial season, I had spent twelve months noticing, watching comets and asteroids, faint galaxies, sunspots, and distant stars. Creation unfolding. Some may witness the unfolding of the universe, like a gathering of planets, as comforting, a creation that cares enough to influence us, and they interpret it as such--a mystery with human fingerprints. Others scoff and find no connection where none was intended. Both sides miss the point, I think. And therein lies perhaps the greatest mystery: not how strange it is for the universe to unfold, but rather, that there is a universe to unfold at all."
Along the way, we learn a lot about astronomical history, such as Galileo and Tycho Brahe, and we are enthralled by Calia's playfully anthropomorphic description of the constellations as the mythological movements of predators and prey, monsters and mavericks, lovely maidens and rescuing heroes.
This paean to the cosmos is a joy to read. A word of caution, however, is in order: The Stargazing Year may send you scurrying to the nearest supply store to purchase a telescope. If so, I can envision Calia exulting, "My work here is done!"
Roy E. Perry of Nolensville is an advertising copywriter at a Nashville publishing house.
Note: An alternate translation(by Thomas Kingsmill Abbott) of the quotation by Kant is: "Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the oftener and the more steadily we reflect on them: the starry heavens above and the moral law within."

Book Description
Six hikes in the area of Punta Chivato on the east coast of the southern Baja California peninsula enable visitors to better understand major themes in the natural history of the Gulf of California and its geological past. Johnson has taken a body of technical research on the geology and paleontology of the region and made it accessible in plain language for anyone who visits the peninsula, whether for study or recreation.
Customer Reviews:
Take the trip, ........... lots of headroom in this time machine!.......2007-06-01
Interesting, informative, .............a delight. Yes, "Discovering the Geology of Baja California" is a pleasure and the guided tours that Markes takes one through, will in the end leave the reader with a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation for our planet. In my own case, even before I had gotten to making the actual pilgrimage to Punta Chivato, my eyes had been newly sensitized enough through the reading alone, that I was able to offer up a discovery of my own, which I more or less stumbled upon well south of Professor Johnson's "Living Museum"of Punta Chivato. I can't tell you what a thrill it has been for a novice like myself to help shed even a tiny bit more light on the solution of the geological puzzle of this fascinating penninsula! Since then, between pondering "my site" and actually walking through time at the awesomely beautiful Chivato, I realize that my life has, through exposure to this book, been fundamentally changed for the better. I wasn't looking for a new hobby but it will indeed be hard to shake this one. I therefore highly recommend this book to anyone who might be interested in the geology of Baja California and the associated birth of the Gulf of California. May it broaden your horizons as well.
A wonderful walk through Baja's geologic past........2002-10-17
This book is like a nice walk with a good friend who has a talent for telling great stories. You go along for the pleasantness of the walk, and find yourself transported right into the middle of the story. Here you are, some forty feet above the current level of the sea, standing on a shelf of land that contains the perfectly preserved remains of a coral reef. In another area, some 260 feet above sea level you come across a fossilized seabed jammed with the shells of thousands of oysters. Ancient shark teeth litter the ground on top of a 130-foot high mesa. Your friend walks on a few yards and, with infectious enthusiasm, reads the next chapter of the story to you.
Six hikes around the Punta Chivato area on Baja's Gulf coast introduce you to the fascinating story of Baja's geologic history. If you love Baja, love geology, or just love a nice hike, you'll LOVE this book!

Book Description
Book Description
From the winner of the PEN/Voelker Award, poems of love, terror,
rage, and desire.
Here I am, not a practical man,
But clear-eyed in my contact lenses,
Following no doubt a slightly different line than the others,
Seeking sexual pleasure above all else,
Despairing of art and of life,
Seeking protection from death by seeking it
On a racebike, finding release and belief on two wheels . . .
—from ”The Death of the Shah”
The poems in Ooga-Booga are about a youthful slave owner and his aging slave, and both are the same man. This is the tenderest, most savage collection yet from “the most frightening American poet ever” (Calvin Bedient, Boston Review).
Customer Reviews:
Good strong stuff.......2007-04-18
Seidel has no shame, as he shouldn't. No one is spared in this book--politicians, minorities, women, disease patients and happy people are all subject to Seidel's wicked treatment, which is his genius. Seidel is dour and curmudgeonly. Reading a Seidel poem is like hurtling over a cascade of brutal, brilliantly clear images. Whether by their beauty or their despair, each one manages to be frightening. The first reading of a Seidel poem is bound to provoke an intense emotional/visceral response, even among casual readers, while subsequent readings will reveal purebred poetic craft. His honesty insults you, me, and everyone else; anything less would insult art.
Wisdom With A Slice Of Irreverance.......2006-12-10
I came at this book from an unusual perspective. I'm a motorcycle-enthusiast, not a poetry connoisseur, and I heard about the author from a riding-buddy. (He, I and the author all live on Long Island and ride motorcycles.) I'm not the typical consumer of a book of poetry and I approached this one with some apprehension.
That dissolved almost immediately, however, when I got into the writing. It is easily-accessible and hugely entertaining. I found myself enjoying the time spent with a seasoned individual whose unique perspective is not only sagacious but fun. I never expected poetry to tackle subjects of real interest to me (e.g., sex) but this book does. Both the topics and the author's exploration of them amused and enlightened me. Chances are you'll enjoy it, too.

Great Escapism.......2005-04-08
Wonderful tale and commentary on life challenges in the U.S. Likeable characters, and nice blend of the surreal with the all-too-real.
The Kerouac-Casteneda Connection.......2004-08-27
If Jack and Carlos had met, shared a trip, and written about it, it would read almost like this book. Throw in a bit of Orwell and there you have it. This a quick read that makes the reader ponder what's what and who's who, in their own Booga life. Highly recommended, especially for Dharma Bums fans.
Zen Flavored American Pie.......2004-08-19
Part road trip, part political manifesto, and part electric kool-aid acid dream, BOOGA is a wild ride down the back roads of author Hayes Brown's new utopian Woodstock Nation. Pulling together cultural icons like good ganga, hitchhikers, jam bands, and vehicles with morphing and cloaking abilities, this vision of the future reads like Kerouac on Ecstasy or Tom Robbins on herbal tea. Along the way, Hayes challenges the status quos of capitalism, consumerism, militarism, politics, religion, and mass media. Waxing nostalgic about the bygone days of Frisbee, dogs, grass and free love in the park, the book's plot climaxes at a world-championship boomerang tournament on the frozen tundra of Alaska. Enjoyment of this tasty piece of Zen-flavored American Pie is limited only by the reader's willingness to suspend reality. No more Grateful Dead or Phish concerts to attend? Reading BOOGA may get you by until the next Big Love-In.
fun and light little story.......2004-07-22
This adult fairy tale about the fatalist idealism of a disillusioned 30-year-old (Boo Rasmuson) takes place in the quasi-fictional "United Capitalistic States". Our hero has found himself in an empty existence with his fianc? dwelling in a house surrounded by bland material excesses in the metro area of "Columbia City".
Boo is banished to the couch and television by his soon-to-be life partner after drinking more than two beers one evening. In a weakened state of life stasis and relationship malaise, an aggressive infomercial mogul convinces him that he is an idiot if he does not purchase a course of inspirational/motivational recordings. He buys the discs and listens. From these recordings he's prompted to compose a to-do list of proposed life accomplishments. His list contains quite a few noble self-realizing goals for him to achieve, and ends in suicide.
We hop in the car for a "goodbye tour" road trip with Boo, who turns out to be an only slightly tormented character embarking on a foot-loose, fancy-free, sunshine & buttercup, peace-fest journey. He meets and befriends mythical characters such as a beautiful fem hitchhiker, a mannequin that slowly morphs into a love interest, and a roving columnist with a healthy green glow. The group decides to travel together and finds it necessary to give itself a name: "Booga" (short for "Boomerang Gang" and the first word spoken by the wooden-lady "Flo") to define themselves and one of the goals of their somewhat reluctant leader to participate in a boomerang throwing competition. The journalist of the misfit gang sends his stories of their travels and exploits to various national weekly publications via electronic mail. Soon as they arrive in a new town or destination, they are surrounded and generally accommodated by followers and well-wishers.
The movement takes itself to "Aleyska" for the final boomerang throw-down, drum-circle, love-o-rama (this book is dedicated to Jerry Garcia, wink-nudge) and climaxes within the narrator's final mental journey to realize the true destination of his life and final morbid goal. The novel BOOGA takes us where we want to go from where many of us not-so-young-anymore idealists often find ourselves mired in today's abridged expectations of life, love and happiness. This fable's message is delivered with a healthy dose of psychedelic imagery and nonsense terminology to ensure you only relate it to reality to a certain extent. Regardless of traveling in a vehicle with its artistic license pushing the expiration date, this fun and light little story has a sweet and righteous moral.
Review by Shannon McDonald of BookReview.com.
A great insite into the joys of throwing boomerangs........2004-07-22
Beside Booga being a fun book to read, it is the first novel I've ever seen that showed how fun and rewarding throwing boomerangs is. I've been throwing boomerangs for several decades and Hayes Brown really caught the spirit of the sport. There are some wonderful lines in the book on throwing. "To throw a boomerang is to play a game with the wind." and "We give a boomerang energy. Wind gives it lift. Wood gives it spirit." are just a couple of examples. Protagonist Boo Rasmuson goes on a high spirited counter culture cross country road trip to compete with his boomerangs. Join him and you'll enjoy the ride.
