Book Description
A follow-up to his best-selling E-Learning, Beyond E-Learning explains the most current thinking on how organizations learn and apply what they know to be successful, and explores the increasingly important role that technology plays, not as an end in itself but as a vital means to get there. The book also provides a clear path for helping to integrate learning—including e-learning—knowledge management, and performance support, and will help training professionals and the organizations they serve go beyond common myths and misconceptions about training and e-learning, focus training/learning activities directly on organizational know-how, and implement a framework that can (at last) be a catalyst for true organizational learning.

Fantastic reference.......2007-06-15
I have been using this book for grad course at Roosevelt U. Most books used for the classroom are dry and outdated, but I found "Beyond E-learning" informative and innovative. I would highly recommend this book to all Learning and Development professionals. If this wasn't a very good book, I would take the time to write this blurb.
From Someone who has 'Been There, Done That'.......2006-08-04
Sub-Title: Approaches and Technologies to Enhance Organizational Knowledge, Learning, and Performance
This book is the second edition or followup to the authors original book on E-Learning. It is perhaps the most complete analysis on the subject.
Education is in an interesting time. The basic structure of the ecucational system of a teacher and a group of students gathered around him dates from the time of the Greeks. Computer aided instruction where essentially a computer uses some of these same techniques to pass the knowledge of an expert on to students using a computer.
There are, a lot of little steps between the idea and the actuality. Of course there are the mechanics of how to do it. And there is the problem of finding the right teachers. [One military training course, set up by people who have 'been there, done that' teaches things like selecting a candy bar that won't melt in the desert (M&M's?) and how to armor a truck.] There's also playing on the skill that today's game playing kids have learned playing video games. What a way to teach someone how to drive a tank!
This is a book I'd recommend to anyone interested in or in charge of setting up a computer based training program. Dr. Rosenberg has 'been there, done that' in so far as e-learning is concerned.
Rich with details.......2006-04-06
Marc has taken the time to explain through examples what we need to know to make wise decisions about E-Learning. I walked away with ideas and guidelines I can use immediately.
Essential reading for managers of smart enterprises.......2006-03-15
Once again, Marc Rosenberg shows us the way to really transform our organizations into efficient, effective knowledge-centered enterprises. He warns that e-Learning, like training in general, is often done the wrong way, for the wrong reasons. He busts myths right and left (the section on "the myths of e-Learning" alone is worth the purchase price!), and steadfastly refuses to be swept along by fads, technologies -- or even traditions of training.
What Rosenberg does is to lay out a vision of the Smart Enterprise, in which the focus is on performers rather than learners. He argues persuasively that technologies such as e-Learning, classroom learning, knowledge management, communications and collaboration technologies are best viewed not as individual technologies (or fads), but rather as complementary parts of a balanced strategy for performance improvement in enterprises which effectively translate data to knowledge to information to performance. Detailed chapters then discuss each of the key components of this strategy for performance improvement, including practical advice on how to implement them and where the pitfalls are. Examples and issue sidebars featuring luminaries in the field and corporate success stories add weight to the argument.
This is not just another "business book of the month" full of quick-fix half-truths. It is a mature, broad and comprehensive view of what it really takes to make any knowledge-intensive organization get what it needs to reach its goals. Senior line organization managers will find it essential; training managers will find it liberating and exhilerating -- or threatening. It's required reading for everyone responsible for making their enterprises smart.

Book Description
The `corporation' is by far the most successful legal concept of organization among large business firms. Yet there are numerous examples of firms operated in corporate form that were troubled either by internal problems arising from divergences of interests between the firm's various constituents (notably, managers and investors), or by conflicts with other members of society (including both victims of accidents or environmental pollution caused by the firm and unpaid creditors in the event of business failure). It is this paradox between the corporation's
prima facie success and its apparent ambiguity in other respects that is examined in this book.
Using modern economic theory concerning the functioning of markets and organizations,
The Corporate Paradox examines how the concept of the corporation relates to the economic entity it organizes and in effect, how it may affect the use that firms make of society's valuable but scarce resources. To this end, both the economic rationales underlying the corporate form of organization and its effects on organizational and individual behavior are reviewed, with special emphasis on the separation between `ownership' and `control' and the principle of limited liability of shareholders, two features which are typical of the corporate concept. Finally, this book surveys, from a predominantly economic perspective, legal remedies that United States and Dutch law have developed in response to certain inefficiencies to which these features may give rise.

Book Description
While much has been written on the ramifications of Newton's dynamics, until now the details of Newton's solution were available only to the physics expert. The Key to Newton's Dynamics clearly explains the surprisingly simple analytical structure that underlies the determination of the force necessary to maintain ideal planetary motion. J. Bruce Brackenridge sets the problem in historical and conceptual perspective, showing the physicist's debt to the works of both Descartes and Galileo. He tracks Newton's work on the Kepler problem from its early stages at Cambridge before 1669, through the revival of his interest ten years later, to its fruition in the first three sections of the first edition of the Principia.
Customer Reviews:
A useful guide to Newton's proof of the law of ellipses.......2006-04-06
Part 1 gives historical background and discussion of some general features of Newtonian dynamics. Part 2 is the heart of the book: Newton's proofs of Kepler's laws, and of course especially the theorem that planets move in ellipses around the sun. Brackenridge goes through Newton's proofs step by step in great detail. It is quite hopeless for a modern reader to follow these proofs in the Principia, but, as one would expect, with a guide like this it is easy to see the general strategy and follow the steps. But Newton's proofs use a few nontrivial theorems from classical geometry. These were surely known to Newton's readers, but they certainly are not today. Brackenridge doesn't prove these theorems, so if we really want to understand Newton's proof of the law of ellipses (which is "the goal of the book"; p. vii), then we are forced to go look up serious theorems in Euclid and Apollonius. Part 3 discusses Newton's published and unpublished alternative approaches to the problems of planetary motion. Brackenridge argues that the first edition of the Principia is the clearest (in the later editions insights are "hidden in a labyrinth"; p. 209); a translation of the relevant parts is given here as an appendix. It was only in the later editions that Newton added the curvaturesque arguments leading to the "the same otherwise" alternative proofs that we find in the common third edition.
The Rise of Universal Gravitation.......2002-06-30
This book examines in detail Newton's solution to the direct Kepler problem: "Given that the planets' orbits are elliptical, what is the dependence of the force on the distance between the sun and the planet?"
Newton's solution is a triumph of mathematical astronomy (Euclid and Apollonius would be proud!). However, Brackenridge notes the difficulty for a general layperson to understand the solution. This book guides you step by step with only the prerequisite that you understand basic geometry. Brackenridge also emphasizes that we look at Newton's work from *his* perspective, not our modern one.
You'll know that you've touched something sacred when you make it through Newton's Preposition 17 (Problem 3 from _On Motion_ in this book). A must for anyone seeking to get an overview of how Newton saw celestial mechanics.
In depth look at dynamics.......2000-04-02
This book is well written and everything is explained well. This book, however, is not for the layman. This is a book that one should work though not just read.

Book Description
Electroweak and Strong Interaction: An Introduction to Theoretical Particle Physics begins with relativistic quantum mechanics, which lays the foundation for the rest of the text. The phenomenology and the physics of fundamental interactions are emphasized through a detailed discussion of the empirical fundamentals of unified theories of strong, electromagnetic, and weak interactions. The principles of local gauge theories are described. The minimal standard model of the fundamental interactions is developed and characteristic applications are worked out. Possible signals of physics beyond that model and the theory of interactions of elementary particles probing complex nuclei are also discussed. Numerous exercises with solutions make the text suitable for advanced courses.

- Offers never-before-published information about Election 2000!
Edited by Larry Sabato, this collection of first-hand stories and analyses offers stunning insights into "the election of the century" from the people who were there. George Terwilliger from the Bush legal team and Ron Klain and Jeremy Bash from the Gore legal team provide insider accounts of the Florida ballot recount battle. Tim Burger of the NY Daily News writes a previously unpublished story about the Bush DUI, Diana Owen from Georgetown University provides unique coverage of the media consortium recount, and Tom Fiedler, editor of the Miami Herald -which was at the "center of the storm"- writes the introductory chapter. Overtime stands far out from the crowd of books on Election 2000 because it contains original, never-before-seen material and because it offers a wide spectrum of insider views, providing a balance of journalistic, academic, and campaigner accounts. Because it combines political journalism with solid political science research, it is both highly readable and enlightening. And because Overtime was written and published after the initial rush of post-election books, it includes data and stories that have been revealed since the first wave hit the bookstands. Overtime is not only an entertaining read with a unique insider's view, but will help readers truly make sense of this complex and historic election. It walks readers through the story of the election, offers a context for understanding why things happened as they did, and leaves them with a more meaningful appreciation of the powerful effects this election had, and will continue to have, on our political system.
Larry J. Sabato is at the University of Virginia. According to The Wall Street Journal, Dr. Sabato is "probably the most quoted college professor in the land." The Washington Post calls him "the Mark McGwire of political analysts." He has appeared on dozens of nationally broadcast television shows, including
"60 Minutes", "Nightline", "Face the Nation", "The Today Show", "Good Morning America", "48 Hours", "Larry King Live," and "The Jim Lehrer News Hour." Dr. Sabato is the Director of Government Studies at the University of Virginia and is the recipient of more than two dozen major scholarships, grants, and academic awards, and has written 19 books, including: Feeding Frenzy: How Attack Journalism Has Transformed American Politics (Lanahan, ISBN 0965268780); Peep Show: Media and Politics in an Age of Scandal (Rowman & Littlefield, ISBN 0742500101); and Dirty Little Secrets: The Persistence of Corruption in American Politics (Random House, ISBN 0812924991).
Customer Reviews:
A rare impartial book on Election Day 2000.......2003-09-16
There are many books that have been written on the subject: from Bill Sammon's book "At Any Cost" on the right to Alan Dershowitz' "Supreme Injustice" on the left. Sabato's is a rare thing, a book that tries to be impartial, and succeeds.
It has chapters by legal advisors to both Gore's and Bush's sides in the legal wrangles that followed the election, as well as journalists and academics. If you want to know what happened, as seen by all sides, this is about the only book that will tell you that.
The only negative point I can make is a printing job that is somewhat careless; missing apostrophes abound, and my copy has two of one page and is missing another. But that does not bear on the book's merit itself.
About Time: Overtime!.......2001-09-22
Not long before the chads stopped swinging in the last presidential election, pundits and pollsters were sharpening their wits and dusting off their finger pointing apparatus. Their goal was to isolate the who, what, where, why, and how of the controverial election results in Florida. That election brought everybody who was anybody, including the Supreme Court, to the edge of their seats for days. The indefatigable Sultan of Soundbites, UVA Professor Larry J. Sabato, had seen enough and done enough in politics to realize this was history, and deserved to be given a thorough investigation. So he collected a group of insiders and commentators to take their best shot at turning over stones and writing about what crawled out. The result was Overtime! The Election 2000 Thriller. No casual or serious student of US history should be without a copy. Congratulations to Dr. Sabato and Joshua Scott, his coauthor and editorial assistant from the UVA Center for Governmental Studies on a job exceptionally well done. Buy this book for yourself, and at the reasonable price, grab a couple copies for friends as well. It's guaranteed to reveal facts that even the media savvy US public has not to this point realized. Alyson L. Taylor-White, Editor, Virginia Review
What the media didn't, and won't, tell us........2001-09-14
Will only political junkies or long-ago residents of Florida (I plead partly guilty of the first and fully guilty of the second), appreciate this book? I think not, but it does help to have given up excessive idealism ("Politics is so corrupt!") and excessive cynicism ("People are so corrupt!") in favor of an occasional visit to realism.
With the media giving us mainly--and often only--sensation, and seeing law as a struggle by imperfect human beings to create some justice in the world, I liked best the stories told by the attorneys for both sides.
Fair, Balanced and Fascinating.......2001-09-07
Overtime is a great look back it this election. For me, it was interesting to go back and put the whole campaign/election in perspective from start to finish. It's also nice to read a book like this that seems to be written from a non-partisan viewpoint. Sabato presents both sides of all the issues and is equally critical of both campaigns. In about 12 years when my son is taking his high school civics class and needs a topic for a book report or paper - I will dust off this book and hand it to him. On a side note, I recently saw Mr. Sabato speak at a conference I attended. If you ever get the chance, go see him! He is very informative and quite humorous.
Sabato's Best Ever---The Making of the President 2000.......2001-08-30
Ever since Theodore White died, I've been searching for a political author who can communicate the excitement of a campaign while grounding his or her work in facts. I've found him: Larry Sabato. I've read several of his books such as Feeding Frenzy, and I've been impressed. But OVERTIME is his best yet. He's put together an all-star team to tell the truth about the incredible election of 2000. Unlike a lot of the other books on 2000, he leaves out the spin and bias, and he focuses on reality. Who needs spin when you have the most dramatic election in modern American history? OVERTIME helped me to really understand the most historic election of my lifetime. It's the best book out there on 2000---BY FAR.

What a wonderful story!.......2006-10-24
The season was straight out of a storybook and it is wonderful to relive the moments through the book. Lots of neat insight and "fly-on-the-wall" moments with the team. The writer (Chris King) does a nice job of weaving in sidebars, history and other interesting tidbits with the game accounts. The reader learns a lot about how this team was put together and the coach's philosophies. Sports fans and those who appreciate a good story will find this an easy, quick read.

A Must-Read for fans, officials, and players.......1999-06-21
This book describes so great the life of a basketball official. How he handles and indeed lives his job. Even though this book is old it gives me that "special" fever to read it over and over again. Richie Powers sarcastic discussions with players and coaches are great. Every fan, player and official should read it to understand the life of a basketball referee in the National Basketball Association. I wish Richie Powers would have written one book for every season he had been in the league. I'm also waiting for a book of one of the referees who officiate in the NBA right now. Again: A Must-Read for everybody interested in basketball!!!!
Book Description
Like his college roommate Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen took both poetry and Zen seriously. He became friends with Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and Michael McClure, and played a key role in the explosive poetic revolution of the '50s and '60s. Celebrated for his wisdom and good humor, Whalen transformed the poem for a generation. His writing, taken as a whole, forms a monumental stream of consciousness (or, as Whalen calls it, "continuous nerve movie") of a wild, deeply read, and fiercely independent American-one who refuses to belong, who celebrates and glorifies the small beauties to be found everywhere he looks. This long-awaited Selected Poems is a welcome opportunity to hear his influential voice again.
Customer Reviews:
The Brainy Beat.......2002-12-12
I didn't know much about Whalen's poetry until he died this year, but the terrific memorial reading for him here in San Francisco drove me to "Overtime" and man, what a find. The Beats were more learned than the 'first thought, best thought' aesthetic suggests, and Whalen's poems balance religion, philosophy and cranky Zen insight with a casual, conversational Americanese in a way few of his more famous contemporaries could touch. His poems draw from a deep past that embraces everything from ancient Chinese verse to classical music, but insist that it walk down the street in T-shirt and jeans. Whalen spent the last three decades of his life at the San Francisco Zen Center--his particular brand of Buddhism, so generous to human failings (starting always, comically, with his own) and never, ever doctrinaire, has to be one of the most attractive spins on Eastern religion I've read. Whalen was in it and of it, never above it. He gives the moment plenty of wiggle room in his writing, so that cats, friends and silly thoughts can all stray into the poems without being shoo'd out for art. Whatever Beat meant, Whalen shows it in about its best light. Poetry's a little thinner and more straight-laced with him gone.
This is poetry!.......2000-08-29
This isn't some crumbling, dry keeper of the hallowed institution that is sometimes "poetry." It is sad that Whalen's works are so hard to come by these days.
Why aren't you reading this?
Run to your nearest bookseller and demand this book!.......1999-11-26
Philip Whalen is a national treasure, one of our most important living poets. This collection, masterfully assembled by Michael Rothenberg, is a great place to start if you're not familiar with Whalen's work, and a glorious visiting ground for those of us who have already discovered him. Don't let the word POETRY dissuade you. You will not be bored for a minute.
An excellent taste of one of our most original poets........1999-09-16
ON BEAR'S HEAD is a staple in my library of 20th Century poetry collections. Too often included in the same breath with Snyder, Kerouac and the beats, Whalen's work deserves to stand alone. This new collection is a must for anyone who appreciates true literary invention.
Ron Padgett says about Overtime.......1999-06-25
"In Philip Whalen's poetry, offhand compositional elegance and the deep amusement of wisdom combine to produce one of the pure delights of contemporary literature."

Book Description
Joseph Millar's poems come out of the American landscape like runaway diesel trucks loaded with miners, electricians, waitresses, ditch diggers, mechanics, factory workers, the homeless, the hopeless, and the lost. These are the voices poetry has classically ignored, finally speaking to us through Millar's expertly detailed lines. Here is the poetry of work, its dignity, pain, pathos, and oppression rendered in poems so tight they tick like clocks, or bombs. Joseph Millar grew up in Pennsylvania and received an MA degree from Johns Hopkins University. He spent 25 years in the San Francisco Bay area, working at a variety of jobs, from telephone repairman to commercial fisherman. His poems have appeared in numerous magazines and he has won fellowships from Montalvo Center for the Arts and from Oregon Literary Arts. He now teaches at Mount Hood Community College, in Oregon.

My Copy Is Worn From Constant Re-Reading.......2006-10-04
When I'm not picking this book up again (& again) as a source of inspiration, it rests on my shelf between Phillip Levine's _What_Work_Is_ and B.H. Fairchild's _The_Art_Of_The_Lathe_. It holds its own in that company as a solid, timeless book that both furthers and transcends the genre of poems about work.
Overtime is a hit.......2002-01-03
This book opened my eyes to the secret life of men. Camille Paglia, Philip Levine, Richard Hugo and Larry Levis would love this book. If you've ever worked, raised a child, been married or divorced, had a desperate love affair, drank too much, tried too hard, missed your father or read Keats out loud to the salt marches, this is the book for you. A great accomplishment by a wonderful new poet.

Book Description
Written for business and human resource professionals, the guide to regulating overtime covers all of the latest changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which determines whether an employee does or does not receive overtime pay. The 2004 revision of the law marked the first update of overtime regulations to the FLSA in more than 50 years and includes changes to minimum wage, overtime requirements, and white-collar exemption regulations, all of which are addressed in this book. In addition to federal regulations, overtime exemption standards in 18 states that differ from federal regulations are outlined in detail.
In 2004, the Department of Labor issued new overtime regulations of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Understanding the Federal Wage & Hour Laws is an up-to-date, authoritative reference that explains the current regulations. Not only does the book cover the continuing and new regulations, it helps you meet the challenge of multi-tiered compliance required by different state and federal regulations.
Written for HR professionals, this book succinctly but thoroughly covers all aspects of the FLSA, including:
- Who is covered?
- Hours worked
- Overtime requirements
- Minimum wage
- Child labor laws
- Recordkeeping requirements
- Wage-hour audit
- Questions about the wage-hour investigation
- Consequences of FLSA violations
