    Book Description

Here is a book on the ABC's of paying for college.

Today, the cost of a 4 year education at a private college is over $26,000. For a family with two, three, or more children, that adds up to a HUGE sum. And the cost will only climb higher in the coming years. Most families, however, have the means to send their children to college. It requires a lot of planning, saving, and smart investing, but it can be done. Everyone's Money Book on College will show you how.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-08-07

This narrow minded, interrogation oriented guide is simply horrible. The only person to recommend this to is the job seeker -- to prepare you for the more mean spirited interviews. My advice would be to walk away, but if you really want the job, then awareness of this sort of interview practice might help you get hired.

As another reviewer observed, if companies really do follow this sort of advice, then they deserve the people they hire. Now, some companies may want a team of willing white shirts with heads full of programming language details. If you're one of those, buy the book. However, note that ascertaining real competence, creativity and aptitude take a back seat here; it's form over substance.

When I think about the very best "techies" I've hired and worked with over the past 30 years, many would not successfully pass an interview process modelled after the advice in this book. Unbelievable. The credentials for the author to write this book, as far as I can tell, are these: IT executive and horse trainer. I rest my case.

    1 out of 5 stars abysmal.......2007-01-14

I often interview programmer candidates, so I bought this book to calibrate my interviewing style and skills. I am appalled at the advice in the book -- I guess I should hope other firms do interview this way, so they'll gather the programmers I definitely don't want and leave the good ones for me.

Besides the defects other reviews have already mentioned (in this day and age, if you only hire candidates who show up in suit&tie as this book recommends, you'll end up missing many of the best techies!), some parts are positively creepy -- e.g., under "Gleaning Demographics" it claims that, while some questions are illegal, you should still slily ask questions to hiddenly gather that kind of information, since aspects such as whether the candidate has small kids (illegal to ask about that) should "factor strongly into a hiring decisions" -- so, ask what the candidate does to relax, that will dupe them into revealing whether they have a family.

Disgusting, really, and I find myself hoping somebody ends up in lots of trouble for practicing such weaselly duplicity -- meanwhile, all I can recommend to anybody but outright weasels is to carefully avoid this horrible book.

4 out of 5 stars Nice to have book - If you need quick questions on C++ and Oracle.......2006-11-08

This book certainly helps managers interviewing programmers who claim expertise with many languages. If you own a J2EE shop and looking for Oracle and C++ expertise and need tough questions to ask....the questions prescribed in this book is good. Also note, this book does'nt help you as a reference for any other practical use of those languages.

5 out of 5 stars Another Good Interview Guide.......2006-09-01

This is another good book in the Job Interview series from Rampant. As with the other books, this book gives both the employer and the candidate guidance in areas such as work experience, personal appearance and education.

The questions that are provided in the book give a good base for the employer to ask the candidate. Of course, each company will need to modify or use only the questions that they will need.

I would recommended this book to any employer or candidate seeking a programming job in one of the languages covered.

2 out of 5 stars too general to be useful.......2006-02-16

The advice on interviewing is very general and can be found to the same detail with google. The advice is all useful, but it's not worth the price and the style is a little goofy for what I expected to be a more professional book.

The technical interview questions are atrocious. As others have commented, the "easy" questions are useful (e.g. how do you indicate comments?) and some of the solutions to the "hard" questions are incorrect (e.g. they try to illustrate a common C pointer bug in correctly written code).

    The book just lacks content.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide.......2006-09-01

To find a good candidate and hire that person does take some homework for the person doing the hiring. You have to weed out the people who do not qualify immediately. This book gives you that help.

The book is a great guide in what to look for in and how to be a Oracle professional. Along with guidance on education, professional experience, personal appearance, the book provide sample questions that all Oracle DBAs should know. The candidate can use the questions as a review. The employer can use the questions as a guide to other questions or could use the questions straight from the book. Of course the employer should be aware that the candidate might have also read the book.

Any employer looking for a quality candidate should buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Background Tips.......2005-11-26

I used this book as a guide when hiring a co-worker and it saved me considerable labour. I would disregard the other reviews that stuff this book because it mentions that Oracle programmers need college degrees and a sense of proper professional attire. If you work in a professional environment, this is the book that explains how-to find fellow professionals.

The technical questions are good but my favorite part is the personal accessment section. Too many Oracle people think that Oracle is just another job, and this short book sets the record straight.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful tool for the IT manager.......2005-10-01

This book is useful for an IT manager with limited Oracle experience. Looking forward to seeing an updated version!

    1 out of 5 stars A Stern Tonic.......2005-06-02

    [...]
These are not guys prone to asking hypotheticals, or encouraging thought experiments. They wear white shirts. They have answers. You'd better know these answers, and only these, because they've been written down in this little book.

No subtle distinctions, variations of experience, or questions of cognitive talent will clutter their decision processes at hiring time. These are not distractible people.

They cover a lot of ground here. Who makes a great Oracle person? Electrical Engineers are perfect candidates -- but watch out for Education majors (they're suspect). (FYI, this reviewer is an E.E. -- glad to know I'm okay.) What personality type is best? Try to get one with an "'Anal' personality,"

"after Sigmund Freud's theory of anal-retentive personalities" (page 34).

I bet these guys are great fun. Pleasant to work with (assuming you've memorized the entire content of your site's init.ora, and can recite it verbatim).

I must heartily disagree with one of the critics of this book. It is not wide and shallow. Rather it is narrow and subterranean. It expects encyclopedic knowledge of Oracle trivia -- the minor and/or once-in-a-career kind of stuff.

Most answers it asks for are the kind slovenly architects and developers refer to in the documentation, when, if ever, they are pertinent, or whenever they've been forgotten in the rush of ten dozen other tasks, or after the certification test is done with. You'll only be getting cream with this book, the kind of professionals who read and reread from Rampant's Oracle In-Focus series, especially to the kids before bed each and every night.

    Heaven help you.

4 out of 5 stars Give you some ideas on DBA job interviews.......2005-05-29

I bought this book and went through it in less than 2 hours. I think the book is worth to read. It certainly gives you some ideas on how the DBA job interview is conducted. I did like it. I believe the book can help junior DBAs get prepared for a job interview.
For the reviewers who think the book can help hire the wrong person, I would say that is true. But if you are not a qualified DBA and you study this book to get a job, sooner or later your lies will catch up with you and you will be on the road again looking for another job.

      Book Description

Based on the expertise of thirty leading experts on confiscation in the EU, this is the first book to analyse the practice of proceeds from crime confiscation in the original fifteen EU Member States. It examines the implementation of confiscation provisions in all three (investigative, judicial and disposal) phases of confiscation proceedings. It quantifies the enforcement of confiscation provisions in the EU, using an innovative and unique methodology and thereby furnishes understanding of obstacles and best practices. The conclusion of the book is that the ‘tough on criminal wealth’ philosophy is largely alien to the everyday practice of law enforcement agencies. Putting criminals behind bars is still the main aim of the system, and most of the scarce resources available are devoted to achieving this. This title is of interest to academics and students in the fields of criminology, sociology, and law, as well as to law enforcement officers, public prosecutors, and policymakers.

      Book Description

This is the most detailed guide to observing galaxies, clusters and nebulae available in a single volume. The objects included range from those visible in binoculars to faint galaxies requiring a 30 cm telescope. For most objects descriptions are given for a range of telescope apertures; the catalogue contains data not available elsewhere.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Planning Reference.......2007-07-02

This book is an excellent reference to use in planning deep sky observing sessions. It provides concise descriptions of what can be expected of telescopes of small and intermediate apertures.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for advanced observers.......2001-03-21

This text is not for people who take their scopes out once a week to do casual oberving. It is packed with technical and visual data on about 2,000 deep-sky objects, most of them galaxies. This book competes directly with the 2 volume Night Sky, which details some 5,000 objects. Which to choose? Luginbuhl's text has close to 30 detailed charts, and maybe three dozen sketches; it has basic information on magnitude, size, and nature of deep-sky objects. It deliberately limits the objects described to those visible in scopes no bigger than 30 cm (12 inches). The descriptions range from 3 or 4 lines (for distant galaxies seen a hazy patches in 12 inches scopes) to almost a full page (for objects like the Orion Nebula). This book works well for observers with smaller scopes. Luginhuhl begins his descriptions with how the object appears in 6 cm (2.4 inch) scopes. Then moves up to 15 cm (6 inch), then presents the view from a larger socpe (ranging from 20 to 30 cm). So, the owners of smaller scpes are not left out. Owners of smaller scopes can't see most of the 5,000+ objects presented in the 2 volume Night Sky. So, for those of us with more modest scopes (and bank accounts), we can use Luginbuhl. However, you will still need a good set of star charts to find the objects. Overall, a very useful book for amatures with smaller scopes and an interest in oberserving deep-sky objects. But not intended for observers in the southern hemisphere; no objects south of -50 declination are covered. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Serious Amateur Astronomers.......2000-12-06

If you're an amateur astronomer in a rut of a few dozen Messiers and want someting else, here's the place. Some 3,500 deep sky objects with paragraph descriptions. Helps you get a lot more enjoyment out of a scope. Describes objects through various apertures from 60mm through 30cm (=12"), consistently describing at 6" 10" and 12" apertures. Mostly text, some drawings, some pix. Organized by constellation: you can pick a constellation near zenith for the night, and then do "saturation viewing" of dozens of objects in that one area. The descriptions really help you learn to notice detail: you'll be directed to a red star at the s end of one cluster, or advised to notice a double or triple star in another cluster. Much attention paid to appearance of galaxies. Includes items by NGC, M, and IC numbers. Follows ascending RA in each chapter like the NGC catalog. Provides info on magnitude: surface brightness, visual magnitude, etc. Keyed to be used with a good skymap like Tirion. Extremely powerful tool in conjunction with digital computer. Main defect is that RA and Dec coordinates are in separate listings in back which is clumsy in field use; RA and Dec are also provided for 1950 and 2000 coordinates in a way that is difficult in field. If you're star hopping with a good map or have an e-brain for a digital setting circle system this isn't much of an obstacle, however. This book is one of the most underused resources in amateur astronomy. I am mystified as to why. If you have a scope 4" or bigger and want some universe to explore, this is the book.

4 out of 5 stars MUST for serious deep sky observer.......2000-06-14

This book explains the view of numerious deep sky objects through 60mm, 150mm and 200-250mm scopes. The explanations are helpful in finding the objects in the field. However; although introductory chapters may be helpful for beginners, this book is for intermediate or advanced telescope users.

            Book Description

When Charles Darwin, then age 22, first saw the HMS Beagle, he thought it looked "more like a wreck than a vessel commissioned to go round the world." But travel around the world it did, taking Darwin to South America, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, and of course the Galapagos Islands, in a journey of discovery that lasted almost five years. Now, in Fossils, Finches and Fuegians, Richard Keynes, Darwin's great grandson, offers the first modern full-length account of Darwin's epoch-making expedition. This was the great adventure of Charles Darwin's life. Indeed, it would have been a great adventure for anyone--tracking condor in Chile, surviving the great earthquake of 1835, riding across country on horseback in the company of gauchos, watching whales leaping skyward off Tierra del Fuego, hunting ostriches with a bolo, discovering prehistoric fossils and previously unknown species, and meeting primitive peoples such as the Fuegians. Keynes captures many of the natural wonders that Darwin witnessed, including an incredible swarm of butterflies a mile wide and ten miles long. Keynes also illuminates Darwin's scientific work--his important findings in geology and biology--and traces the slow revolution in Darwin's thought about species and how they might evolve. Numerous illustrations--mostly by artists who traveled with Darwin on the Beagle--grace the pages, including finely rendered drawings of many points of interest discussed in the book. There has probably been no greater or more important scientific expedition than Darwin's voyage on the Beagle. Packed with colorful details of life aboard ship and in the wild, here is a fascinating portrait of Charles Darwin and of 19th century science.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect compliment to Voyage of the Beagle.......2007-04-23

This book was an incredibly fast and easy read for its 400 pages. For those who have read Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle, this may seem a bit redundant at times, but I actually found it to be a great compliment. Richard Darwin Keynes (Charles Darwin's great grand-son) does a beautiful job weaving together a narrative of Darwin's long journey aboard the HMS Beagle between 1832 and 1836. Bits and pieces of Darwin's commonplace journal, his field notes, and letters home are very well incorporated into the overall narrative, adding authenticity to Keynes' interpretation of his great-grandfather's time aboard the Beagle. There are also several very nice watercolor plates and many gorgeous maps and engravings that really add to the reader's experience.

The chapters are very short (8-12 pages) and each one deals with a specific region visited along the journey (except maybe the first and last two). This style is very effective, and keeps the reader interested and on track. Keynes' also adds important and relevant historical background that is not present in Voyage of the Beagle and provides the reader with a great deal of insight into Darwin's life and his relationships with other people, such as Captain Robert FitzRoy. I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in Darwin, evolution, the history of science, or Latin America.

5 out of 5 stars DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I FIRST MADE.......2006-08-07

I never gave this book a good chance when I started reading it the first time and so I put it back on my shelf for a few months.

I started out reading it very slowly, each word, trying to savor the images of a bygone time and of the words and adventures of an incredible man. After a while I noticed I was trying to skip through as fast as possible just to finish it. Then when I left it on the shelf a few months it dawned on me... this book should be treated respectfully, and read for enjoyment, not just to be finished but to feel and be enveloped by, and so I picked it up a second time and my impression of it is what lead me to give it 5 stars.

The incredible abundance of drawings by those very artists that were there with Darwin, seeing what he saw, eating with him, journeying with him, and Darwin himself, his words, what his thoughts were, what he saw and touched... the descriptions coupled with the drawings of the places visited made me want to step back in time and visit each place the way it used to be... sadly those jewels are now replaced with superhighways as Keynes points out... man has a natural inclination and penchant to change usually irreversibly by destroying beauty... and what has been lost is truly sad...

What has been left is this wonderful, moving account of Charles Darwin as so wonderfully presented by Keynes. So don't do as I first did, try to plough your way through this book just to finish it, but even worse, don't just put it down to never read it because you will have truly lost out on reading a fascinating journey, an adventure of people, places, names, faces and life you just don't find these days in todays reading...

The pictures of the Feugians, unbelievable! These were the actual people that Darwin met along the journey and to see these pictures and see what these people looked like, what they wore, their face painting, everything is truly remarkable. A book like this, with this much value, pictures, detailed descriptions and accounts should be worth much much more than it sells for compared to some of the garbage churned out by lesser authors.

And you know what... I plan on reading it all over again, slowly, deliberately, and with wonder and amazement filling my mind and heart.

4 out of 5 stars Map making and evolution.......2004-05-07

An enjoyable recount of Darwin's voyage around the world in the early 1830s. Rather than argue for or against any version of Darwins theories, Keynes describes the adventure of 2 English gentlemen setting out to create a better map of the world. Aside from providing an enjoyable and picturesque travel guide, we get to know the way each inspired the other.

The reader will be surprised to read about the daring young Darwin's adventures. He ends up dodging warriors prowling the Argentinian praries, trusting his life to murderous Fuegian cowboys, getting drunk with Chilean gold miners, intervening in a Brazilian civil war and tasting potentially halucenogenic South American plants.

Keynes seems particularly interested in showing Darwin as Captain FitzRoy's agent and artist. In some ways, Keynes makes a case that Darwin was hired to write the story FitzRoy dictated. Like the artists brought along by Captain FitzRoy, Darwin was invited to embellishFitzRoy's maps. FitzRoy, a flawed character of exceptional energy and intuition, knew well his limitations: depression and a violent temper. To achieve what he knows is possible he drags young English gentlemen off to the ends of the world and sets them on their path to celebrity and fame.

Left to itself, this action story and tragedy (FitzRoy commits suicide in the last narrative chapter) could have stood alone. The author feels compelled to trouble us with a search for the exact moment that Darwin's diary records the inspiration for 'evolutionary theory'. It detracts a bit, but only in a minor way. Unexplored is the relationship between map making and evolutionary trees, an obvious paradigm which would have fit the story better.

            4 out of 5 stars A book re-visiting Darwin's steps........2003-06-08

Mr. Keynes (great-grandson of Charles Darwin) re-plays the voyage of the Beagle, with some interesting back-up material. We read of Darwin's early life and his family connections, and the Beagle's Capt. FitzRoy's interest in returning to Tierra del Fuego. Included are plenty of extracts from others' letters and logs, plus many original drawings & paintings. And there is a nice touch; at the top of each page is the month and year, so you are continually reminded of just how much time has passed.

Having read and enjoyed Darwin's 'Voyage of the Beagle', I was not expecting much in the way of startling new evidence re his discoveries & theories. And there is not; but what IS there, is more focus on his time in Patagonia, which surprisingly covered 2 years - nearly half the 5 year trip ... which is not apparent in the 'Voyage' (in my faulty memory) ... And the Beagle only spent 5 weeks in the Galapagos, but that short stay provided most of the hard evidence which fuelled Darwin's later theorising.

Further visits to N.Z., Australia and Tasmania showed the devastation to the indiginous wildlife caused by introduced species, which prompted more thoughts on survival. Had more time been available in Mauritius or Madagascar, his theorising might have been more concentrated and conclusions derived earlier (but of course, 20/20 hindsight always provides the best view!).

Mr. Keynes provides a modern perspective on the scientific method of the young (23) Darwin, especially in his noting exactly which strata fossils were found, and his meticulously accurate un-biased descriptions of specimens (not a predominant trait in the scientific community at that time!). Particular focus is placed on his geological and fossil studies - largely glossed over by Darwin himself - revealing some deep background thinking which was formative in constructing his Theory of Evolution. The penultimste chapter reveals how Darwin spent the 20-odd years leading up to the publication of 'Origin'; how his Father and reading Malthus simulated his imagination; how his friendship with Lyell and Wallace proved crucial in the book's publication. It also underlines the idea that luck, having independant means (something denied to Wallace), and being in the right place at the right time (like Capt. Cook) probably had more to do with his success than his brilliance did.
In a touching final chapter we feel the love and friendship that grew between FitzRoy and Darwin during those 5 years on board, FitzRoy's subsequent jobs, then his final descent into depression and suicide..

Not an easy read; Mr. Keynes' writing style is not as fluid or easy on the eye as some other writers in the popular science arena, and some of the attached letters are hard going. I found myself frequently re-reading passages to ensure that I had the correct gist of the text.
However, that apart, this is an illuminating, fresh look at what was probably the most important voyage - ever - for philosophical science.****

This little book contains a very good summary for the layman of malt whisky production and details on some 24 producers. It is especially good for anyone who will be in Scotland and has the chance to visit a distillery. The book is truly "little", it is 6" x 4" and 60 pages long; it fits in a pocket perfectly for travelling and makes a good companion while in Scotland.
