    Book Description

Financial Markets Theory presents classical asset pricing theory, a theory composed of milestones such as portfolio selection, risk aversion, fundamental asset pricing theorem, portfolio frontier, CAPM, CCAPM, APT, the Modigliani-Miller Theorem, no arbitrage/risk neutral evaluation and information in financial markets. Starting from an analysis of the empirical tests of the above theories, the author provides a discussion of the most recent literature, pointing out the main advancements within classical asset pricing theory and the new approaches designed to address open problems (e.g. behavioural finance). It is the only textbook to address the economic foundations of financial markets theory from a mathematically rigorous standpoint, and to offer a self-contained critical discussion, based on empirical results. Financial Markets Theory is an advanced book, well-suited for a first graduate course in financial markets, economics or financial mathematics. It is self-contained and introduces topics in a setting accessible to economists and practitioners equipped with a basic mathematical background. For those not acquainted with standard microeconomic theory, the tools needed to follow the analysis are presented early in the book. The approach makes this a vital handbook for practitioners in insurance, banking, investment funds and financial consultancy, as well as an excellent graduate-reference textbook.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK!!!.......1999-01-19

Honestly, I don't even know how this book got published. Almost exactly 1/2 of the book is simply a direct copy of Mr. Binder's own bankruptcy papers--no explanations or commentary, just the copies. The rest of the book took me about 20 minutes to read. It was filled with the attitude "you might as well abuse the system as much as you can." It stated that you can just forget about buying a home until your bankruptcy's off your record, period. It also was filled with wonderful tips for getting post-bankruptcy credit cards. For example, Mr. Binder suggests enrolling in a cheap college class to get a college ID, applying for a student credit card, then dropping the class in time to get your tuition fully refunded. He also suggests making "inadvertent" mistakes when filling out credit card applications. Please, please, PLEASE do not waste the time and money on this book. You will find NOTHING useful in it. One really has to wonder about a book written about a legal matter that continually refers to your attorney as your "shyster," and tells you that you don't need a particularly good one, since it's a simple procedure. Instead, order "Bounce Back from Bankruptcy" by Paula Langguth Ryan. She tells you how you CAN get a mortgage after bankruptcy. She provides the names and addresses of the major credit reporting agencies, and even provides form letters for requesting and correcting your credit report. Everything is broken down, step by step. HER advice about post-bankruptcy credit cards includes a listing of banks that offer secured and unsecured cards, and compares them in terms of requirements, credit limit, annual/application fees, amount of deposit required (secured), return on deposit (secured), interest rates, and has verified that these cards do indeed show up as positive credit references on your credit report (many secured cards do not). Names, addresses, phone numbers, exactly who to call, or what to write--it's in Ms. Langguth Ryan's book. So, please--if you're considering bankruptcy, or looking to rebuild your credit, use your hard-earned money for "Bounce Back from Bankruptcy" instead of Mr. Binder's piece of trash.

    Book Description

The first spacecraft to explore the secrets of the Sun, Jupiter, Saturn, and the void beyond Pluto, the Pioneer space probes have been the trailblazers of the space age, truly going where no man has gone before.

Emblazoned with the nude figures of a man and a woman, etched representations of our human form, the Pioneer generation of probes were aptly named. Launched into the inky depths of space, they were more than mere machines, they were humanity's first emissaries into deep space. And the pictorial inscriptions that adorned the crafts embodied the hopes and dreams of everyone involved in the Pioneer program. They were our humble attempt to communicate with the extraterrestrial intelligent life we imagined the probes might encounter … they were our message in a bottle.

Perhaps the most efficient, reliable, and cost effective program to come out of NASA, the Pioneer missions are a shining example of how a small and talented group of people can, against all odds, pull something off that has never been done before. Indeed, more than thirty years after its launch in 1972, Pioneer 10 is still cruising into interstellar space, sending back data as it courses through the galaxy while Pioneer 6, in solar orbit, is more than 35 years old and humankind's oldest functioning spacecraft. But despite their enduring contributions, the Pioneer project remains a footnote in space history, little more than a humble prologue to its inheritors.

The Depths of Space recounts the long overdue history of Pioneer both as a scientific and technological achievement and as the story of the exceptional people who made the program possible. This tight narrative captures the black-coffee buzz of full-throttle, deadline-driven production, the sharp, intense thrill of discovery, the pang of anxiety that accompanies looming danger and ultimate loss, and the satisfaction and pride of creating an enduring legacy.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the curious non-engineer.......2005-09-07

"The Depths of Space" by Mark Wolverton includes all the details for those of us who weren't born or were too young to know when these remarkable spacecraft began their journeys. Mr. Wolverton's tale shows the politics and competition between NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Ames Research Center in the early days of spaceflight primarily through the stories of Pioneers 10 and 11, though without neglecting the other flights of the Pioneer series. For those interested in the history of NASA and spaceflight, this book is an excellent place to start. The Pioneer series of flights racked up a long list of "firsts", not to mention blazing the trail for JPL's Voyagers in the 1970's and 1980's. Pioneers 10 and 11 got there first, scouting ahead for the much more celebrated Voyagers a decade later. Mr. Wolverton's book is a solid first step in remembering the often overlooked and forgotten Pioneers.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful book on an interesting topic.......2004-11-15

The Pioneer missions were important milestones in the exploration of space. The book is a nice, concise and well-written history of the Pioneer program, from the early and unsuccessful probes flown by the military in the immediate post-Sputnik era to the trail-blazing missions to Jupiter, Saturn and Venus. All of the book was interesting, but I thought that the story of how Ames Research Center got involved in deep space exploration, the maneuvering to get access to the Deep Space Network, and the continued gathering of data from Pioneers 10 and 11 long after their primary missions ended to be particularly interesting and never before told. I wish that the book had been a little longer, with some more detail about the spacecraft and their scientific findings. Also the meager selection of small black and white photos is inadequate. But those are minor points and this book is a must-have if the subject interests you.

5 out of 5 stars Nice book, emphasizing the human factor.......2004-10-18

This is a great book on NASA's Pioneer project (not only the well-known - though already half-forgotten - Pioneer 10 and 11 missions to Jupiter and Saturn, but the whole series, including the highly successful 1978 mission to Venus). Very well written and researched, by a very talented young author, who's definitely in love with his subject. As the foreword of astronomer James van Allen states correctly, this book is first of all `a tale of human achievement', i.e. the emphasis of this book is very much on the project as such and on the people that made it possible (and how they did it). Wolverton does pay substantial attention to technical issues and to the scientific results of the various missions, it's true, but I would have preferred him going into more detail on all these things, providing more data and explaining more of the scientific achievements. To my tastes, he spends too much time discussing `the human factor' and the adventure side of it. But then again, this is the book's explicit `mission'. It just wasn't exactly what I expected, although I enjoyed it very much (especially the story about the controversy around the famous plaque with the naked couple on it, and on the old DEC PDP 11-14 `mini-`computer that was still being used in 2000 to communicate with Pioneer 10). So, this book is highly recommended and a Must for space buffs. It's also a very beautiful book, solid and robust. It's a bit of a pity that the - not too many - photographs and pictures are all in black-and-white. You can look into the book (all of the pages, and with color pictures!!!) on the publisher's website.

5 out of 5 stars Informative historical overview of the Pioneer space probe.......2004-09-09

The Depths Of Space: The Story Of The Pioneer Planetary Probes by by author and NASA expert Mark Wolverton provides the reader with an informed and informative historical overview of the Pioneer space probe mission program that saw the first mission launched in August 17, 1958 that had the misfortune to blow up 77 seconds into lift off. But every failure was a learning experience and subsequent missions ventured to probe the sun, go beyond the asteroid belt, went on to Jupiter, Saturn, and finally out of the solar system and on to the stars. Superbly written, The Depths Of Space is a seminal and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal and community library Space Exploration History reading lists and reference shelves.

5 out of 5 stars best book about paint making.......2006-08-27

Every paint maker must have this book on the shelf. It covers an area which would be otherwise almost completely dark, since there are not many books which deal with paint components, paint making and paint rheology in the same volume.
For artist's paints formulator, everything is useful in this famous reference.
For those who make industrial coatings, even if the formulas of industrial paints have changed since its publication, the principles of dispersion and the theoretical knowledges exposed here are still accurate and have still to be known by engineers. This book presents them clearly.

5 out of 5 stars The most helpful guildline for a coating technician.......2000-02-22

The book is very important for every person who want to enter the realm of coating technology. But the weakness of this book is also obvious:it is too old to keep abreast with the increasing development of coating industry, for instances the emergence of green coating :high build, solventless, powder coating ,water-borne coating etc.,the new application procedure ,such as cvd,dvd,self-leveling.I think it is time for Mr. Patton to roll up his sleeves to review the theory and practice of coating that have come up since 1979 .God bless Mr. Patton to present his new edition to his readers who is waiting so long for his new book.

5 out of 5 stars The bible of the manufacture of surface coatings.......1999-10-06

This is an old book, but much has remained the same since it was written. It effectively lays out the requirements for the dispersion of pigment in to polymer solutions and emulsions, using various types of dispersing equipment.

      Book Description

A fresh look at Darwin's most radical idea, and the mysteriously slow process by which he revealed it.

Evolution, during the early nineteenth century, was an idea in the air. Other thinkers had suggested it, but no one had proposed a cogent explanation for how evolution occurs. Then, in September 1838, a young Englishman named Charles Darwin hit upon the idea that "natural selection" among competing individuals would lead to wondrous adaptations and species diversity. Twenty-one years passed between that epiphany and publication of On the Origin of Species. The human drama and scientific basis of Darwin's twenty-one-year delay constitute a fascinating, tangled tale that elucidates the character of a cautious naturalist who initiated an intellectual revolution.

The Reluctant Mr. Darwin is a book for everyone who has ever wondered about who this man was and what he said. Drawing from Darwin's secret "transmutation" notebooks and his personal letters, David Quammen has sketched a vivid life portrait of the man whose work never ceases to be controversial.

Be forewarned: the narrator of the audio book version is an unfortunate cross between J. Peterman from Seinfeld, Mike Wallace from 60 Minutes, and the narrator of old elementary school film strips. The content is very good (as described in other reviews posted here) but you should have a friendly warning about the audio version. The narrator will put you to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Short, Fast, and Informative.......2007-04-25

"The Reluctant Mr. Darwin" by David Quammen is a concise, fun, and fast read. If you want to learn the bullet points about Charles Darwin's life and the formative people, events, and intellectual and social climate that surrounded Darwin's publication of the On the Origin of Species, then this book is for you. Quammen does not spend too much time on any one point, but maintains a theme that Darwin was not lazy in publishing his famous book many years after his voyage but reluctant, wanting to make sure his ideas were sound and well evidenced.

An outline of Darwin's life can be found in many places, even Wikipedia, but what makes Quammen's book particularly helpful is the sections he devotes to writing about Darwin's contemporaries and their contributions to natural history and Darwin's work. Quammen writes about Charles Lyell and his advocacy of the idea of uniformitarianism, the idea that was formed by slow-moving processes, which opposed the idea of catastrophism, the idea that was consistent with Christian theology of the times and based on the belief that certain catastrophes shaped the geologic features of the earth as it is today. Quammen also writes about John-Baptiste Lamarck and his idea of the inheritance of acquired traits, an idea that has been found to be incorrect, but one that Darwin uses in his famous book. These sections in "The Reluctant Mr. Darwin" give historical and scientific context to Darwin's work and allow the reader to more completely appreciate the specific and significant contribution that Darwin made in advocating the idea of evolution by natural selection.

Another important aspect of Quammen's book was how Quammen made it a point to show the evolution of Darwin's famous publication from its infancy, where he first wrote his ideas in journals titled Journal A, Journal B, Journal C, and so on to his obsession with writing a tome that covered every possible argument and objection to his idea with as much evidence as possible to his final rushed publishing of On the Origin of Species due to the threat of Alfred Russel Wallace nearly publishing the same theory before Darwin himself.

This book definitely gives the reader a good picture of Darwin and the social and scientific climate in which he lived. I came away from the book having what I felt was a basic yet complete understanding of Darwin's life.

5 out of 5 stars On the Evolution of Darwin.......2007-04-25

I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a quick read on the life and works of Charles Darwin. David Quammen beautifully integrates excerpts from primary sources into this biography, really making the work a book, and not just a really long research paper. The sections are smartly headed and the writing style is engaging and makes the biography an easy and interesting read.

The biography itself provides an intimate portrait of Charles Darwin the son, husband, father, friend, etc., which also reveals much about his tendencies as a scientist. The author gives a good overview of all the theories regarding speciation that had already been discussed throughout the intellectual community before Darwin came up with his idea on the "transmutation" of species. It was particularly interesting when trying to imagine a society before the theory of evolution. My struggles to do so only further demonstrate how much Darwin has impacted our modern thinking. Quammen's summary on the ideas and examples provided in "The Origin of Species" may be interesting to many who do not wish to read the 500 pages or so of the actual book, but in my opinion, it was unnecessarily dry and seemed out of place in an otherwise interesting and engaging work.

However, one point that I particularly enjoyed was the fact that Quammen explored the evolution of Darwin's theory of evolution: from the beginnings of its fabrication in "notebook B" to its revealing to the public in the first edition of "Origins" to subsequent subtle changes in order to rectify problems brought up by opponents and finally to its modern applications in the field of molecular biology. The author definitely provided a persuading argument on the "fitness" of Darwin's great idea.

5 out of 5 stars The Reluctant Mr. Darwin by David Quammen.......2007-03-31

This book is by far one of the best I have read on Darwin. David Quammen puts you inside the period in Enland as well as providing a great understanding of Darwins personal thinking and self doubt as he formulated his theories on evolution. This is an excellent book for anyone but especially a non-scientist such as myself.

This work focuses on the post Beagle period of Darwins life, and although I would have liked more included on Wallace, Lyell, and Huxley, Darwin was the deserving subject.
David Quammen is an excellent writer on science and scientists, and if you are starting with this work, you should check out his other works.

        Book Description

Progress in nanoscience is becoming increasingly dependent on simulation and modelling. This is due to a combination of three factors: the reduced size of nano-objects, the increasing power of computers, and the development of new theoretical methods. This book represents the first attempt to provide the theoretical background needed by physicists, engineers and students to simulate nanodevices, semiconductor quantum dots and molecular devices. It presents in a unified way the theoretical concepts, the more recent semi-empirical and ab-initio methods, and their application to experiments. The topics include quantum confinement, dielectric and optical properties, non-radiative processes, defects and impurities, and quantum transport. This guidebook not only provides newcomers with an accessible overview (requiring only basic knowledge of quantum mechanics and solid-state physics) but also provides active researchers with practical simulation tools.

        Book Description

"The Chamber of Cheesecakes has been opened. Dieter's Beware!" reads the sinister warning in this hysterical parody of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series. In this farce all of your favorite Harry Potter characters, places, and past events have been twisted around with devilish wit. You'll follow the adventures of Harry Putter, Ron Cheesley, and Hermione Stranger in their sixth year at school, seventh if you count preschool. While some of the encounters are spoofs reminiscent of the original tales, others are new, keeping the storyline fresh and unpredictable. If you like the original Harry Potter series, you'll love this crazy parody.

This book is suitable for children of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars This is not the Harry you've read about!.......2007-04-12

We bought this a while ago and we loved it. Knowing the original "Potter" stories made it even better. My two older daughters thought it was hilarious, and my youngest just started reading it as well. We only wish the series was longer!
