Ask the Right Questions Hire the Best People
Ronald W. Fry Manufacturer: Career Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1564148920 |
Book Description
"So, tell me about yourself." "Have you ever been fired?" "What are your salary requirements?"These are just three of the questions you might think you have to ask when you're interviewing a potential new hire. Maybe they're the questions you dreaded when you were on the other side of the desk. But are they the questions that will identify the best candidate for the job?
Look no further than Ron Fry's Ask the Right Questions, Hire the Best People. The best-selling author of 101 Great Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions and 101 Smart Questions to Ask on Your Interview takes you step-by-step through the hiring process. Whether you're replacing an employee who's leaving or creating a new position in your organization, Ron Fry shows you how to write a concise and accurate job description, then how to translate it into a realistic set of search criteria.
Ask the Right Questions, Hire the Best People also shows you:
How to attract the best applicants. What to look for when you're screening resumes. What questions you should ask in the interview and when to ask them. How much to read into a candidate's "body language" and whether you should trust the gut feeling you get from watching them. How to listen more effectively to what the applicant is really telling you. How to probe for information the applicant doesn't want to reveal. The right way (and time) to negotiate salary. What questions the law permits and forbids.
Whether you're an interviewing novice or a seasoned pro, you'll find all the answers you need in Ask the Right Questions, Hire the Best People!

Basic HR, good for non-HR interviewers.......2002-08-18
Fry has written other books on this topic---from the applicant's perspective. He's the author of the strong-selling "101 Great Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions." It's interesting to watch him play both sides of the table like this whole hiring process is like a grand game of chess.
But, hiring people is not a game. It's serious business. To hire the right people, you have to ask the right questions. It's important to understand what the answers are telling you and how your questions and the applicant's answers guide your hiring decisions.
The Table of Contents is sparse. It really doesn't help the reader determine where to find things in the book. Fortunately, there is a somewhat helpful index that can assist, but that's going backward. The book begins with some preliminary information about job advertising and resume screening. Chapter 2 explores interview styles including telephone interviews, team interviews, behavioral interviews, and stress interviews. Next, the reader is instructed about what to look for in the interview, then comes the interview process itself. Various categories of questions are presented, with suggestions of good answers (represented by the green light graphic) and not-so-good answers (represented by the red light graphic). This pattern begins on page 72 and continues through the balance of the book. I felt a sense of too much of a pattern, like an assembly line process, in the presentation of the information, though there is value in the advice that is shared.
Chapter 11, Staying Out of the Legal Cauldron, may be one of the most valuable chapters of the book. It contains several pages of questions that interviewers are NOT allowed to ask by law. In those organizations (most?) that have supervisors and potential co-workers interview applicants, this information is vital to impart.

Splitting the Second : The Story of Atomic Time
A Jones Manufacturer: Taylor & Francis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0750306408 |
Book Description
Until the 1950s timekeeping was based on the apparent motion of the Sun that in turn reflected the rotation of the Earth on its axis. But the Earth does not turn smoothly. By the 1940s it was clear that the length of the day fluctuated unpredictably and with it the length of the second. Astronomers wanted to redefine the second in terms of the motions of the Moon and the planets. Physicists wanted to dispense with astronomical time altogether and define the second in terms of the fundamental properties of atoms. The physicists won. The revolution began in June 1955 with the operation of the first successful atomic clock and was complete by October 1967 when the atomic second ousted the astronomical second as the international unit of time. Splitting the Second: The Story of Atomic Time presents the story of this revolution, explaining how atomic clocks work, how more than 200 of them are used to form the world's time, and why we need leap seconds. The book illustrates how accurate time is distributed around the world and what it is used for. It concludes with a look at the future of timekeeping.

Introduction to time scales and timing applications.......2006-11-04
Excellent Non-Mathematical Monograph.......2003-02-04
As better clocks were built, measurements showed increasingly subtle causes for variations in the length of the day ranging from a non-circular orbit, to tidal effects, to crust movements, and down to atmospheric effects on the rotation rate. All these are covered in detail.
The most convenient source of time with nanosecond accuracy is now the GPS satellites. Jones describes how special and general relativity affect their timekeeping and how these effects are compensated.
He also goes into great detail about the international organizations responsible for managing UTC and the complex methods used to average the time from the primary standards and hundreds of secondary standards to produce UTC. Jones manages to do this without losing the reader's attention.
Although the book avoids any math or advanced physics, it does not condescend in any way, and is directed to the mature reader. There are explanations of cesium and rubidium frequency standards, hydrogen masers, and also the latest developments: laser cooling and cesium fountains.
It would have been nice if the author had included a bibliography, but this is compensated by providing the URLs for all the major world timekeeping organizations and also links to a number of web sites devoted to time.

The Spirit in the Gene: Humanity's Proud Illusion and the Laws of Nature (Comstock Book)
Reg Morrison Manufacturer: Cornell University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0801436516 |
Book Description
From famines and deforestation to water pollution, global warming, and the rapid rate of extinction of plants and animals--the extent of the global damage wrought by humankind is staggering. Why have we allowed our environment to reach such a crisis? What produced the catastrophic population explosion that so taxes the earth's resources? Reg Morrison's search for answers led him to ponder our species' astonishing evolutionary success. His extraordinary book describes how a spiritual outlook combined with a capacity for rational thought have enabled Homo sapiens to prosper through the millennia. It convincingly depicts these traits as part of our genetic makeup--and as the likely cause of our ultimate downfall against the inexorable laws of nature. The book will change the way readers think about human evolution and the fate of our species. Small bands of apes walked erect on the dangerous plains of East Africa several million years ago. Morrison marvels that they not only survived, but migrated to all corners of the earth and established civilizations. To understand this feat, he takes us back to a critical moment when these hominids developed language and with it the unique ability to think abstractly. He shows how at this same time they began to derive increasing advantage from their growing sense of spirituality. He convincingly depicts spirituality as an evolutionary strategy that helped rescue our ancestors from extinction and drive the species toward global dominance. Morrison concludes that this genetically productive spirituality, which has influenced every aspect of our lives, has led us to overpopulate the world and to devastate our own habitats. Sobering, sometimes chilling, consistently fascinating, his book offers a startling new view of human adaptation running its natural course.Customer Reviews:

Great Stuff.......2004-03-13
Morrison doesn't think we have much choice in the matter, and I couldn't help remember the comment of the lead character in Neil Elliott's THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF JESUS CHRIST, when asked if mankind had free will sufficient to control his destiny. "Of course I believe in free will," he said, "--I have no choice!"
The elusive beast within.......2003-05-26
Taking his presentation of facts and conclusions seriously means that the present course of human affairs is still heading for disaster. I present some conclusions of the book. Reg debunks some of our cherished mystical beliefs, and counterpoises his grim facts, and I present here his main conclusions.
Belief 1. Humans have spiritual autonomy and are therefore accountible for their actions.
Fact 1. We are genetically driven just like any other animal. We have no mind other than the body, and we lack behavioural choice.
Belief 2. The environment is inherently stable and will rebound if given half a chance.
Fact 2. The environment is a chaotic system and is therefore inherently unstable and always has been. If it were not so, evolution could not have occurred. Rebound is a not characteristic of the system.
Belief 3. With enough moral courage, political will and technical know how, time and money, the environment could be repaired.
Fact 3. Most environmental damage is inevitable product of overpopulation. The more technological the attempted solutions, the greater the environmental debt. All human activity adds to environmental debt.
We fall for the false beliefs most of the time, because humans have a split brain, with "two spheres of awareness available to us, with two entirely separate behaviour control systems, one rational and one entirely non-rational.... ". Unfortunately for the human species " ... the rational brain should be viewed, not as the principal generator of behaviour and the pivot on which the species turns, but as an optional extra designed to be switched off the moment any serious evolutionary matters, such as genetic survival or propagation, arise."
The best course for human species survival would be a global, concious coordinated reduction in human environmental impact, and a strong reduction in birth rate. Instead we are probably going to get conflict, continued exploitation to death and extinction, with war and upheavals on the scale of the Biblical Revelations. As Reg says, "All species must fail eventually, especially the very successful ones, or the whole system will grind to a halt". Reg hopes we will wipe ourselves out quickly as plagues tend to do, so the system can carry on without us.
Exactly what is happening and why you don't believe it........2001-10-01
Morrison tells it like it is, we are by nature anthropocentric and have ultimate faith in the ability of Homo sapiens to overcome any difficulty. Faith, Morrison tells us, is the magic ingredient that enables to make that wondrous leap from grim reality into the totally bloody ridiculous. So those who have given this book one star are the true believers. They have criticized it because they say it smacks of genetic determinism, a term invented by the critics of sociobiology, and not subscribed to by sociobiologists themselves. Or they have criticized the book because it does not offer a rosy picture where we are all saved by the wonders of science. Morrison paints science as one of the culprits in the rape of the world and not our ultimate savior. That is a message that raises the ire of many a true believer.
Yet all Morrison is trying to tell us is that what has happened many times in the past on a much smaller scale, is happening again on a worldwide scale. And it will happen because our population has already reached plague proportions and is now way beyond any sustainable level.
This is the very best book I have read in years, and I read an awful lot of books.

Aspects of Anomalous Transport in Plasmas (Series in Plasma Physics)
Radu Balescu Manufacturer: Taylor & Francis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0750310308 |
Book Description
Anomalous transport is a ubiquitous phenomenon in astrophysical, geophysical and laboratory plasmas; and is a key topic in controlled nuclear fusion research. Despite its fundamental importance and ongoing research interest, a full understanding of anomalous transport in plasmas is still incomplete, due to the complexity of the nonlinear phenomena involved. Aspects in Anomalous Transport in Plasmas is the first book to systematically consider anomalous plasma transport theory and provides a unification of the many theoretical models by emphasizing interrelations between seemingly different methodologies. It is not intended as a catalogue of the vast number of plasma instabilities leading to anomalous transport; instead it chooses a number of these and emphasizes the aspects specifically due to turbulence. After a brief introduction, the microscopic theory of turbulence is discussed, including quasilinear theory and various aspects of renormalization methods, which leads to an understanding of resonance broadening, mode coupling, trajectory correlation and clumps. The second half of the book is devoted to stochiastic tramsport, using methods based on the Langevin equations and on Random Walk theory. This treatment aims at going beyond the traditional limits of weak turbulence, by introducing the recently developed method of decorrelation trajectories, and its application to electrostatic turbulence, magnetic turbulence and zonal flow generation. The final chapter includes very recent work on the nonlocal transport phenomenon.
