5 out of 5 stars A must read for changing or enhancing total rewards.......2000-08-26

This book provides an excellent framework for thinking through the process of changing and enahancing total rewards. It takes a broader perspective on rewards and compensation and hits the key components of a successful reward strategy right on the head! I would recommend this book to HR professionals and senior leaders interested in driving real and effective change in the way your organization rewards its associates. Well done!

        5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive. Thorough........2000-07-18

In today's increasingly competitive employment market, compensation is a powerful part of the package used to attract and hold top talent. Although recent research has confirmed that money is not as dominant a factor as it has been in the past, there is no denying that the Almighty Dollar still plays a central role.

If compensation is not designed properly, an organization could be dangerously vulnerable to attack from the raiding recruiters who do know how to do it right. Thus, pay plans become a vital defense as well as a powerful attracting offensive tool. The problem is that many employers, including human resource professionals, don't have a sufficient understanding of how-and why-to pay people appropriately.

Pay People Right serves as a fine textbook for those who want to gain a deeper understanding of the right ways to reward employees financially for their contributions. As the authors observe in their preface, "Much of the popular literature on management and organizational change avoids issues of pay, perhaps because it's harder to address than many gentler and less powerful change tools the literature proposes. Changing pay requires patience and constant attention." They contend that compensation design-pay and other rewards-can influence worker performance to the extent that it can change a company's achievement and destiny. Zingheim and Schuster suggest that compensation is even more of a strategic tool than it has been in the past, particularly in these times of mergers and acquisitions, consolidations, and globalization

        Organization

The book is well-organized for a read-through as well as for reference at a later date. The first chapter addresses Total Rewards and the Six Reward Principles. The principles begin with Create a Positive and Natural Reward Experience. The key is communication and education. The next principle is to align rewards with business goals to create a win-win partnership. People who work for the company add value, which should be rewarded.

We should ensure that everyone is a knowledgeable stakeholder in the overall success of the company. That's the third principle: Extend people's line of sight. The fourth principle is Integrate Rewards: move beyond total pay to include total rewards. Fifth, reward individual ongoing value with base pay. Evaluate competency, performance, and the employee's value in the marketplace. I like the sixth principle: reward results with variable pay-flexiblity, agility, responsiveness.

The authors emphasize the four components of total rewards: individual growth, compelling future, total pay, and positive workplace. It's not just the money. This comprehensive approach leads to a broader strategy.

The second chapter makes the business case for changing rewards, leading to chapter on integrating total pay. The chapter on measuring and managing performance completes the first section of the book, focusing on compensation being a vital part of performance management.

The second part of the book addresses a wide range of pay tools including base pay, short-term and long-term variable pay, and recognition and celebration. The discussion on infrastructure helps the reader understand the foundation of how compensation is designed.

Part III of Pay People Right addresses how rewards are used in several different situations. Readers learn how to reward teams, scarce talent, sales professionals, and executives. In this section the authors address how rewards are used in merger and acquisition situations and in the complicated world of globalization. Chapter 15 on Global Rewards is particularly valuable for employers concerned with compensating people from different countries doing different kinds of work under different conditions. The exploration of global talent as a specific focus was enlightening . . . and, importantly, current.

The book is practical in its approach. Theory is translated effectively into practice so the textbook becomes a useful handbook, as well. The index works-I checked a number of issues and questions of interest-to help the reader find specifics to answer questions and get the job done.

5 out of 5 stars Great treatment of a difficult subject.......2000-03-13

Everyone has an opinion on pay, but no one brings the depth of experience and level of insight to this subject the way these two authors do. Surveying the entire complex issue of how to pay people in a way that is fair and effective for the both the firm and the individual, Schuster and Zingheim have provided a practical road map that is easy for anyone to follow who really wants to "pay people right". If every manager in every company would read, digest, and act upon their advice much of the disfunction that plagues the workplace would be eliminated. A great book, and a great service to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars A "must" reading guide !.......2000-02-27

"Pay People Right! defines", Zingheim and Schuster write, "the leading and communicating role of pay in business performance. Pay enjoys a critical role in helping companies and people enhance their performance. A number of important tools are available to improve pay design. We describe how people can add value and how your company get from where it is now to where it would like to be."

In this context Zingheim and Schuster :

        * define the six reward principles that provide consistency of purpose and direction for the diverse pay topics.

        * describe how an enterprise's business situation, business strategy, human resources strategy, and total reward strategy drive the business case for changing rewards.

        * discuss the importance of the total reward picture in determining a firm's competitiveness in the labor market.

        * discuss how business strategy and goals can best drive rewards to be successful.

        * define the concept of paying individual's ongoing value along three dimensions : (1) skills and competencies that the individual uses to get results, (2) the individual's consistent performance over time, and (3) the individual's value relative to the labor market.

        * review alternative structures for base pay, including grades and ranges, market rates, broad grades, and career bands.

        * discuss both cash-based and stock-based long-term variable pay as a reward tool not only for executives but also for key people, wherever they are in the firm.

        * discuss team reward design and the issues surrounding the move to team pay.

        * discuss reward strategies for scarce talents, salesforce and executives.

        * discuss the role of total pay during the turmoil of mergers and acquisitions.

        * discuss results of globalization, as unique total reward opportunities.

I highly recommend this invaluable study to executives, managers, human resources and compensation professionals.

                Book Description

Our universe seems strangely ''biophilic,'' or hospitable to life. Is this happenstance, providence, or coincidence? According to cosmologist Martin Rees, the answer depends on the answer to another question, the one posed by Einstein's famous remark: ''What interests me most is whether God could have made the world differently.'' This highly engaging book explores the fascinating consequences of the answer being ''yes.'' Rees explores the notion that our universe is just a part of a vast ''multiverse,'' or ensemble of universes, in which most of the other universes are lifeless. What we call the laws of nature would then be no more than local bylaws, imposed in the aftermath of our own Big Bang. In this scenario, our cosmic habitat would be a special, possibly unique universe where the prevailing laws of physics allowed life to emerge.

Rees begins by exploring the nature of our solar system and examining a range of related issues such as whether our universe is or isn't infinite. He asks, for example: How likely is life? How credible is the Big Bang theory? Rees then peers into the long-range cosmic future before tracing the causal chain backward to the beginning. He concludes by trying to untangle the paradoxical notion that our entire universe, stretching 10 billion light-years in all directions, emerged from an infinitesimal speck.

As Rees argues, we may already have intimations of other universes. But the fate of the multiverse concept depends on the still-unknown bedrock nature of space and time on scales a trillion trillion times smaller than atoms, in the realm governed by the quantum physics of gravity. Expanding our comprehension of the cosmos, Our Cosmic Habitat will be read and enjoyed by all those--scientists and nonscientists alike--who are as fascinated by the universe we inhabit as is the author himself.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Cosmos I've Ever Read.......2006-11-23

This is my favorite science book - the best I've ever read at describing the physical universe, its origins and its nature. It is the only science book that I have read more than twice. I've read it four times - all the way through, and I'm ready to read it again. I am an amateur scientist with a BS in Math and Physics, the precise knowledge of which I have long since left behind. But, while I pursue my business career, I maintain a passionate interest in understanding this amazing Universe in which we live. So, I've read dozens, maybe even a hundred, books on cosmology, the origins of the universe, sub-nuclear physics, string theory and the like. And, this is the best. Unless your knowledge is very, very advanced, you will love it, learn from it and be inspired by it.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent Place to Begin.......2004-05-19

I've only just started this book and am only thirty or so pages in, but I've already decided that it's one of the best books of its kind that I've ever read. I don't know what it is, exactly, about Rees, but his writings are always the most understandable expositions of scientific concepts and evidence out there, at least to me. Sure, there are many other fine writers, but none of them can do quite what Rees does. I do have an initial observation I would like to offer, however:

If God created the universe and there is no other intelligent life out there, or any life at all, then he's a wasteful idiot. Just imagine the vastness of space - are you telling me he needed that much room just to make us?

If the universe came about due to natural forces and there is no other intelligent life out there, or any life at all, then the universe is a stupid, idiotic place. Just imagine that vastness again - are you telling me that either the universe needed that much space just to produce us, or that in all that vastness it could not come up with anything else?

I'm prepared for either event and I don't really care if there is intelligent life "out there" or not, but I know at least one thing - the absence of life/intelligence outside of earth would be solid proof of either God's or the unvierse's inadequacy.

3 out of 5 stars A fine starter but nothing more.......2004-02-04

Martin Rees masterpiece remains for sure "Just Six Numbers". In a few pages, he has been able to track the most intriguing mysteries of physics, by explaining how small changes in "just six numbers" could have prevented us from being...
The idea behing this book is to cover quite broadly all the aspects of modern cosmology. The question which permeates the entire book is "is our existence just an accident, or do we exist because we had to (i.e. the laws of physics imply our existence)"? This is currently THE question in cosmology. After having tracked and measured the most significant quantities that set the laws of our universe, we have started to question "why" those numbers have the values that allows for our existence.
Of course there is no answer in the book, but what is disappointing is that the book just looks like a collection of short stories and information already seen in other books.
Whoever has already read books on cosmology, quantum mechanics and relativity will find just a repetition of short summaries, with a little characterisation by the author.
The good point is that this book can surely be a good starter for neophytes.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Mysteries of the Cosmos Simply Told.......2003-12-23

Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal of Great Britain, wonderfully tells everything about cosmology in this concise book. The reader is lead to a quick tour from Big Bang to biospheres, from the beginning to the end of the universe, and from the micro-world to the cosmos. Yet the description is not superficial but very deep.

Among many of mysteries we learn from this book, let me mention only a few big ones. (1) Dark matter: This prevails over visible matter in constituting the total energy of the universe. It is the No. 1 problem in astronomy today, and ranks high as a physics problem, too. (2) Vacuum energy: This is the origin of the accelerating expansion of the universe. Its nature is a challenge to theorists; it holds important clues to the early universe and the nature of space. (3) Other universes: Our universe may be just one of them. While seeming to be in the province of metaphysics rather than physics, these already lie within the proper purview of science.

The author says that the phrases often used in popular books, "final theory" and "theory of everything," are very misleading and that some of nature's complexity may never be explained and understood. These words just made the scales fall from my eyes. I strongly recommend this book to laypersons interested in astronomy, cosmology, problems at the boundary between science and philosophy, and the deep mysteries of nature.

4 out of 5 stars Local bylaws and the multiverse.......2003-09-03

The first nine chapters of this rather small book give us an excellent summary of our actual scientific and speculative cosmological knowledge.
In the last two chapters the author explains why he believes that the history of our universe is just an episode (a particular Big Bang) in an infinite multiverse (see also Lee Smolin's 'The Life of the Cosmos').

This clearly written (a bonus) book tackles also other important items, like the risk for an encounter with a devastating asteroid, the impact of a unified theory on science, or the still more demote cosmic status of humanity - we are even not made of the dominant stuff in our universe.

A very interesting read. Not to be missed.

                      Book Description

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in History in 1972, and a past president of both the Organization of American Historians and the American Historical Association, Carl Degler is one of America's most eminent living historians. He is also one of the most versatile. In a forty year career, he has written brilliantly on race (Neither Black Nor White, which won the Pulitzer Prize), women's studies (At Odds, which Betty Friedan called "a stunning book"), Southern history (The Other South), the New Deal, and many other subjects. Now, in The Search for Human Nature, Degler turns to perhaps his largest subject yet, a sweeping history of the impact of Darwinism (and biological research) on our understanding of human nature, providing a fascinating overview of the social sciences in the last one hundred years. The idea of a biological root to human nature was almost universally accepted at the turn of the century, Degler points out, then all but vanished from social thought only to reappear in the last four decades. Degler traces the early history of this idea, from Darwin's argument that our moral and emotional life evolved from animals just as our human shape did, to William James's emphasis on instinct in human behavior (then seen as a fundamental insight of psychology). We also see the many applications of biology, from racism, sexism, and Social Darwinism to the rise of intelligence testing, the eugenics movement, and the practice of involuntary sterilization of criminals (a public policy pioneered in America, which had sterilization laws 25 years before Nazi Germany--one such law was upheld by Oliver Wendell Holmes's Supreme Court). Degler then examines the work of those who denied any role for biology, who thought culture shaped human nature, a group ranging from Franz Boas, Ruth Benedict, and Margaret Mead, to John B. Watson and B.F. Skinner. Equally important, he examines the forces behind this fundamental shift in a scientific paradigm, arguing that ideological reasons--especially the struggle against racism and sexism in America--led to this change in scientific thinking. Finally, Degler considers the revival of Darwinism without the Social Darwinism, racism, and sexism, led first by ethologists such as Karl von Frisch, Nikolaas Tinbergen, Konrad Lorenz, and Jane Goodall--who revealed clear parallels between animal and human behavior--and followed in varying degrees by such figures as Melvin Konner, Alice Rossi, Jerome Kagen, and Edward O. Wilson as well as others in anthropology, political science, sociology, and economics. What kind of animal is Homo sapiens and how did we come to be this way? In this wide ranging history, Carl Degler traces our attempts over the last century to answer these questions. In doing so, he has produced a volume that will fascinate anyone curious about the nature of human beings.

4 out of 5 stars Good book providing a good historical context for Darwin's influence.......2005-10-23

This book does a good job of showing Darwin's influence in the social sciences and how Darwin has been used and misused to promote certain ideas.

Starting off, the book discusses Darwinism and some contemporary philosophies that Darwinism influenced such as Spencerism and Lamarckism. If there was a goal this book sought to accomplish was to broaden in the minds of the non-professional the idea that Darwinism is relevant to the social sciences despite the abuses of those who misused Darwinism to promote the bigotry found in "social Darwinism."

Not an earth-shattering book that will likely change the course of the studies of human nature, it never the less puts Darwinism in a more useful and meaningful place in understanding how humans evolved and the role culture and learning played in that evolution.

                      3 out of 5 stars A Historical Malaise.......2005-03-25

This is a good nature/nurture dialectic book to read. Degler's book is a historical account of - not a philosophical, sociological, or psychological argument for - the rise and fall of "social Darwinism."

He begins with an important historical demarcation at the beginning of the 19th century between Spencerism (Herbert Spencer), Lamarckism (Jean Baptiste Lamarck), and Darwinism (Charles Darwin). What we call "social Darwinism" today is not derived from Darwin himself (although one might infer it from his "Descent of Man"), but is actually Spencerism. Spencer, not Darwin, is the one that asserted man is entirely biologically determined. In the nature/nurture dichotomy after the appearance of "Descent of Man," nature is the sole determinate of human nature.

Degler then proceeds for about 200 pages to describe the various reactions against all three of the above forms of evolution as it applies to human beings, starting with the provocative and virulent challenges from anthropology, particularly by Franz Boaz, then onto sociology, and finally onto psychology. All three of these social sciences denied that evolution in any of the above forms contributed to the makeup of homo sapiens. In what becomes a highly repetitive and often tedious account, Degler excavates a minefield of writers from all the social sciences at the end of the 19th century to the mid-20th century to attack all aspects of biologically acquired or inherited characteristics in mankind invoked by evolution. Almost all of these attacks start from the "liberal" conclusion first, viz., that man is the product of his environment only, and then proceed to provide "empirical" evidence and premises for the conclusion that supports intelligence, sexism, racism, feeblemindedness, and the like are all the consequence of society, culture, and the environment, not the result of any biological, much less evolutionary, determinate. Even the notion of "instinct" is practically annihilated. By 1950, the infamous B. F. Skinner had announced that all human behavior was nothing more than a conditioned response to external stimuli - and nothing more. Thus, during this period of the nature/nurture dispute, despite the variety of approaches in the social sciences, nurture alone was deemed the sole determinate of human nature.

By the end of part two, Degler covers more than fifty years of cultural relativism in the social sciences in manifold detail. By the 1950s, attitudes slowly began to change with two concurrent events: (1) The revitalization of genetics and ethology in the field of psychology, and (2) the publication of three major books: Nikolaus Tinbergen's "Study of Instinct" (1951), Konrad Lorenz's "On Aggression" (1966), and E. O. Wilson's "Sociobiology: The New Synthesis" (1975). Instinct was resurrected, and the social sciences could no longer ignore the biological encroachment of genetics and instinct on every living species, including man..The incest taboo is but one example that exists both among non-human and human animals. Aggression is another. The flight/fright response is yet another. Dominance/submissiveness, reproductive success, kin inclusiveness, survival of the fittest, etc., are all based on the Darwinian principles of evolution that have shown themselves "predictive" and "probable" (as opposed to absolute and necessary) inherited characteristics. Such characteristics are mere probabilities, based on genetic inheritances over hundreds, if not thousands and millions, of years. How they actually interact with each individual in the human species is, of course, a matter of adaptation of the species to the environment; hence, there is not the Spencerian inevitability that "social Darwinists" speak of.

This book is a treasure trove of historical developments (or lack thereof) of Darwinism in the fields of biology, genetics, anthropology, psychology, and sociology, especially as it pertains to the first-half of the 20th century. It also clears up several ambiguities and misplaced attributions. Overall, though, it can be tedious and repetitive by restating the same principles from myriads of different social scientists. But it is a heuristic device that leads to the triumph of sociobiology as an essential tool in all the sciences, both natural and social. For all of its historical antecedents, it does lack a contemporary balance in how sociobiology is infiltrating our understanding of human nature today. Therefore, be prepared to continue reading a book like E. O. Wilson's "On Human Nature" (Harvard, 1978) or his "Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge" (Vintage, 1998) to get the full thrust of evolutionary theory in the social and natural sciences.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed, Readable Intellectual History.......2000-04-04

Through intellectual biohgraphies of numerous social thinkers, Carl Degler traces the evolving social implications of biological thought. Degler traces the theme in the writings of individuals, and in the thought of the public and policymakers.

Degler's account only hints at the often ghoulish results (e.g., forced sterilizations). Degler, however, did not intend to fully document American crimes against humanity; he intended to offer the history of a certain theme in American intellectual life. Degler offers a fascinating account of the rise, staggering fall, and gradual comeback of Social Darwinism in American thought.

Have you ever employed the world's oldest dumping line, “Can't we still be friends?” just to take the sting off a breakup? Or worse, have you ever had it used on you? Be honest. It didn't make you feel any better, did it? If you answered no, then you'll agree that, sometimes, the word friend can be a heartbreaker. That is the subject of Friend is a Four-Letter Word. It is a contemporary romantic comedy centered on Kate, a woman on the brink of madness in her attempt to navigate her way through relationships in the twenty-first century.

Picture a woman watching Fatal Attraction with a room full of happily married couples. Kate not only breaks into tears, but shamelessly asks the hostess for a tissue after witnessing the scene in which Glenn Close dies. (She was so misunderstood.) Friend is a Four-Letter Word takes an amusing look at the ever-blurring line between love, friendship and total insanity.

Friend is a Four Letter Word is a wonderfully written romantic comedy. We can all relate to the main character, Kate, and her struggles to find herself after a bad relationship. You cheer Kate on as she struggles to make the right decisions, you are upset at her when she makes a bad one, but all is forgotten when Kate makes a good choice for herself. Kate's obsessions, the people you meet in the novel, and the plot keeps the reader entertained page after page. As you follow Kate on her journey through the novel, you can't help but keep reading. I literally read half the book in one night because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. Marva Bush has done a superb job writing a novel that is fun, witty, and one that we can all relate to.

A very entertaining read! It's pretty impossible not to connect with Kate and her feelings on love. Marva Bush clearly shows us the many complicated sides of romantic relationships through a variety of sophisticated and funny characters. The plot is multi-layered and easy to follow at the same time. Looking forward to her next work!

This book is a definite page-turner! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and the various twists and turns contained within the plot keep it from being your average chick lit novel. Everyone will be able to relate to the themes of romantic love, platonic relationships, obsession, and the like that are dealt with in the book. Take this one to the beach (or wherever you go to relax) and enjoy!

Friend is a Four Letter Word captured my attention from the beginning with distinct, realistic characters that I could relate to. The subject matter of overcoming an obsessive realtionship and navigating the line between friends and lovers is handled masterfully by Ms. Bush who shows her sensitivity for both the male and female characters in the story. As a male reader, I was able to gain insights into both sides of the conflicts presented in the story and I found the foibles of all the characters to be funny, engaging and at times, poignant and revealing. So many of the characters fears and self-doubts are common to us all whether we've been in that exact situation or not. Ms. Bush also captured a variety of settings well and transported me from place to place, time to time with the ease of an accomplished storyteller. This is a fun read!!

The author's voice enlivens the entire book, and keeps readers glued to the pages as they crack up reading it in public. Not only does this book engage its reader to an addictive extent, but it also allows for constant reflection on personal romantic experiences. Kate rivals anyone's bizarre dating history with the most eccentric, endearing, and enlightening anecdotes in print.
