This is the story of a breakthrough in competency-based quantitative business education. Begun in 1991 as part of a college-wide effort to revolutionize business education instruction. The foundations of the new approach were the following four competencies: Teamwork, Communication, Creative Thinking and Adapting to Change. The introductory quantitative methods course occupies a critical position in a competency-based curriculum. An effective "quant methods" course must challenge students to enlist quantitative techniques to solve business problems and establish a lifelong link between data analysis and business decision making. Like many other business programs, we formerly gave responsibility for teaching business mathematics, descriptive statistics, and probability to departments outside the business college. As elsewhere, we were deeply concerned that business math and basic stat courses were generally ill-suited to our business curriculum needs. For example, out business curriculum made little use of material from the business calculus course required in our program. We also discovered that anxiety about these quantitative courses were so high that many students postponed taking them until right before graduation. By requiring a course whose material was seldom applied, the not so subtle and erroneous message was sent to students that fundamental math, stat, and probability is not useful in business. For competency-based education to be successful, quantitative learning must be effectively linked to the rest of the curriculum. First, only quantitative tools directly useful to solving fundamental business problems were to be included in the new course. To obtain this core of tools, we surveyed our business faculty to identify critical methods and concepts most needed by students in each major business areas. Next, we designed an entirely new course around this essential core of quantitative tools. Finally, a revolutionary textbook was developed that fosters quantitative learning through the four business competencies and emphasizes these core methods and concepts. After several years of classroom trials and student feedback, Fundamentals of Quantitative Business Methods is the end result of this process. This text, now in its third edition, helps students identify how each of the four competencies relates to mathematical and statistical reasoning and business modeling techniques. Some problems and cases may also be used to develop teamwork skills through cooperative learning. By working and studying in teams, students can better assess how well they understand the material and can help each other to learn critical problem-solving skills.

A "Must Have" Book.......2005-01-08

For anyone involved in hiring, security, human resources, background screening or labor law, this is a "must have" book. The first half of the book is a very practical and in-depth "how-to" for employers who want to protect their workplace from criminals, terrorist or imposters. It goes well beyond just background screening, and covers the critical aspects of the application, interviewing and reference checking process as part of a safe hiring program. The chapters on negligent hiring, the FCRA and privacy are also critical. There is also an in-depth discussion on the how to legally obtain and utilize criminal records. The second half contains a resources library with chapters on subjects such as terrorism, international background checks, fraud and embezzlement, workplace violence and drug testing. This is the only source of information I have located on international background screening and the issues associated with keeping potential terrorist out of your workforce. The safe hiring audit alone makes this book indispensable. The books 512 pages is nearly an encyclopedia of safe hiring and pre-employment background screening. It reviews the screening industry in some detail as well. The book is very valuable for any employer attempting to outsource employment screening. What is also interesting is that the book also has a chapter that examines employment screening from the applicant's point of view, and even contains information on how job seekers with criminal records can find jobs.

As the title implies, this really is The Complete Guide to safe hiring. Rosen's step-by-step descriptions and instructions are an invaluable resource to any HR or Security professional, or lawyer, concerned with how to effectively implement (and/or measure) an employment screening policy. A "must have" for any organization's hiring procedures.

This volume contains the proceedings of a workshop onSolar Modeling held at the Institute for Nuclear Theory, University ofWashington, Seattle during the Spring of 1994. This workshop was partof a program which concentrated on the nuclear, particle, andastrophysics of the solar neutrino problem, with particular emphasison the experimental goals and opportunities. The workshop covered thephysics of the standard and alternative solar models, the presentstatus of the solar neutrino problem, the existing uncertainties inthe nuclear and atomic physics (opacity) of the standard solar model,and constraints from helioseismology. Among the topics discussed were:the evolution of the rotating sun; solar model independent neutrinoobservables; the role of convective overshoot and diffusion; andturbulence in the solar interior and the role of g-modes. It wasunique in bringing together nuclear, particle, atomic physicists andastrophysicists working on this problem.

In this day when microbiologists are merely molecular technicians coming out of university, this text was a refreshing renaissance of traditional applied microbiology. Rather than continue to rely on oral tradition from mentors to apprentices, Brannan has finally put the practical back into the field. He has produced a highly readable book on cosmetic microbiology practices. Cosmetic Microbiology: A Practical Handbook contains real-to-life practices and tips on sanitation, preservation, test methods, validation, and even a bit of toxicology and regulatory tips that will be highly useful to industrial microbiologists. And it is written in a way that even the process engineers and plant managers will appreciate.

Systematists, comparative biologists, taxonomists and evolutionary biologists all concern themselves with the evolutionary relationships between animals and plants. Homology is the principle underlying these disciplines. When looking at groups of organisms, shared positional similarities (homologues) provide the raw data from which hypotheses of common ancestry (homology) may be suggested. In order to explore the relationship between homologues (characters) and particular hypotheses of common ancestry, complex matrices are devised, where homologues are coded, allowing theories of homology to be developed and tested. Practically nothing has been written about this matrix-building process and yet it is of fundamental importance to our understanding of diversity and evolutionary history. This book fills the gap by discussing the different ways observations are coded and the consequences for the resulting hypotheses. It takes a pragmatic approach and uses case studies as well as theoretical examples to offer practical solutions.

Much intensive R&D work ensued from it, showing the importance of (1) data flow control and (2) high speed memory access on network adapters/drivers.
