In this book, the authors take on the role of the Sherpa: enabling, advising and assisting. The executive, like climbers on Everest, must endure the hardships, put forth the effort, be subject to the risks involved in reaching their goals. Ultimately, they must reach the summit through their own skill and will. On Everest, there is no quick and easy way to reach the summit. You'd think a straightforward approach would be a helicopter to the top. Great idea, but the air at high altitude is too thin for a helicopter to sustain flight. During the arduous climb, a Sherpa does not make decisions. The Sherpa makes recommendations, and the Sherpa gives tips, tricks, and techniques to make the climb easier but does NOT climb for the client. The client has to make the decisions once the Sherpa has offered all the alternatives. In coaching, you need a process, and you must respect the process. No shortcuts, and no detours. Limit the playing field to professional issues, and then to allow the client to do the climbing on their way to the summit. Every situation is unique, but without a map for the process, a defined system, there's no way you'll be able to locate and reach your client's goals.

We often think that being a coach for top managers is as complex and difficult as the manager's professional lives. In the Sherpa Guide authors: Brenda Corbett and Judith Coleman shows us the specific areas where managers tend to be weak and they give us a thorough and very comprehensive guide to use in our coaching. The guide provides us with many simple and easy to use techniques to support managers becoming true leaders of tomorrow's businesses. This process contains so much, and I have yet to come up with a question I haven't found the answer to by going over this book again and again.

A few billion years after the Big Bang, a giant star ends its life in a spectacular explosion. In a fraction of a second, it releases more energy than an average star would in a 10 billion year lifetime, including tremendous gamma ray bursts traveling out at the speed of light. These gamma rays radiate out in all directions - some in the direction where the Milky Way galaxy will be born in a few hundred million years. By the time the first of these gamma ray photons have traveled half the distance to this new galaxy, our Sun is born with the Earth following some half a billion years later. Still these gamma rays are continuing on their journey. By the time they reach our Local Supercluster, dinosaurs are ruling the Earth. When they finally reach the outskirts of the Milky Way, the dinosaurs are long gone and the first human predecessors are walking on Earth. As these gamma ray photons approach the Pleiades, Galileo is looking through the first telescope. As they reach Alpha Centauri, a rocket is being launched from Cape Kennedy carrying a military satellite with a gamma ray detector on board. Four years later these gamma rays have completed their 10 billion year journey on July 2, 1967 and are detected by this satellite!

This is a very up-to-date and exciting book with a lot of the human side of scientific investigation described as well as a fair amount of good scientific information. I particularly liked chapter eleven, which has a beautifully written description of stellar evolution. This is a fascinating book on a relatively new phenomenon in this elegant universe in which we are such a small part. You are sure to want to learn more about these awesome sources of power after reading this book. You might want to get the video "Death Star" from PBS, which chronicles gamma ray burst in a way similar to this book.

Ernst Mach -- A Deeper Look has been written to reveal to English-speaking readers the recent revival of interest in Ernst Mach in Europe and Japan. The book is a storehouse of new information on Mach as a philosopher, historian, scientist and person, containing a number of biographical and philosophical manuscripts publihsed for the first time, along with correspondence and other matters published for the first time in English. The book also provides English translations of Mach's controversies with leading physicists and psychologists, such as Max Planck and Carl Stumpf, and offers basic evidence for resolving Mach's position on atomism and Einstein's theory of relativity.
Mach's scientific, philosophical and personal influence in a number of countries -- Austria, Germany, Bohemia and Yugoslavia among them -- has been carefully explored and many aspects detailed for the first time.
All of the articles are eminently readable, especially those written by Mach's sister. They are deeply researched, new interpretations abound, and the bibliography includes recent works by and about Mach from over a dozen countries.
The book also contains many articles by or about Mach's contemporaries, including Ostwald, Dingler, Weichert and, especially, Einstein. Finally, and most intriguingly, the original ideas of Japanese scholars are presented, built on Mach's philosophy. These demonstrate how Mach's world view is currently contributing to the solution of contemporary philosophical problems.

Walter M. Ellis won the coveted 2002 Darrell Award for Best Mid-south Novel of the year for his ME AND THE DEVIL BLUES. He has followed this success with another, THE TERMINATOR'S WIFE, which deals with the same main characters, metamorphosed into a modern university setting and from black to white.
College students enjoy nicknaming the best and worst professors, and those at UCLA are no exception. Sebastian Bateman, who seems to enjoy failing and humiliating those studying with him, is called the "Terminator." Coming up against our villain is Warren Stelling, a young graduate student, who has a low opinion of the status quo. Warren runs into Evie Bateman, the Terminator's wife, at a record store, and it is love at first sight. She moves in with Warren, who must face humiliation at Bateman's hands, the oral exam for his doctorate when he is not doing well academically, and Evie's dipsomania.
In his usual clever way, Ellis adds more seemingly hopeless entanglements as he gradually unravels the knots and moves to a satisfying conclusion. All those who have been through the college system will be drawn to THE TERMINATOR'S WIFE. Students currently living some of this will especially appreciate Ellis's wit. And all who have been involved in the war of the sexes will eagerly follow the love stories in the main and minor plots.
Ellis's flawless style should be noted. Not all read for style. But those who do will heave a deep sigh of satisfaction.
