Customer Reviews:
Find the older version.......2006-09-20
I bought this book thinking it would be a new and modern upgrade to the 1990's edition with reference to the internet, more ideas in the modern world type of thing. Well, I was dissappointed, if anything it is a watered down version of my old favorite (the 1990's version is my favorite), the new one is the old one with larger print and fewer pages... Stuff must have been cut out.
I really enjoyed the previous version and would read it for enjoyment and diversion often, but the latest copy 2000, is really bad. I recommend going to a used bookstore and getting the older version.
What happened to "Living Poor With Style"?.......2004-11-06
I had borrowed "Living Poor With Style" from a friend long ago, when I was able to buy a "revised" copy it was "The Ecotopian Encyclopedia" or something and it seemed to have been substantially watered down. I'm reluctant to order this title, I want the OLD version, I want the unvarnished original version. Perhaps it is "stuck in the Sixties" but you know what? I unapologetically believe in those values and have lived my entire life following them, although I was ten years late, I was a kid in the 60s. Crunchy granola through and through. What's so funny about peace, love and understanding? Unshackle yourself from chasing quatloos (anyone remember the original Star Trek?) and your life is greatly improved -- the original version of this book was very helpful to me. I wish I could find the original title without any of the dubious "improvements" Callenbach made over the years. Be true to the dreams of your youth. Be true to yourself. Be strong.
Not for experienced frugal folks.......2004-09-27
This book's suggestions are simple, basic and despite that, not deeply explained. They seem to be aimed at big city apartment-dwellers, but no such 'disclaimer' is stated. Thankfully, I checked this book out of the library rather than spending money on it. Do yourself a favor and buy another book with some meat to its frugal suggestions.
Nothing new to say..........2004-08-12
and quite a few stupid things, too, including hitchhiking as a viable transportation method. Many other books will give you much more info than this one. The real goal of this book is in the last chapter (yes, I read it all) - buy less. Buy less because it is better on the Earth, on your budget & on your health. I suggest you save on all of the above and don't buy this book.
Not Exactly Reconnecting with Reality.......2003-04-19
I have immensely enjoyed Callenbach's Ecotopia books (part of the weirdness that is Mamalinde?) but found this tome practically useless. Yes, we HAVE become consumer zombies, and a reconnect with reality is necessary and desirable. While I might not embrace the suburban ideal I also have to decline many of Callenbach's ideas: powdered milk, building my own furniture, using a public hospital, going on welfare, scavenging old food at the grocery store, living in a mobile home or a gypsy wagon, and raising bees are not what I consider viable stylishness.
Callenbach's ideas are wildly opinionated (but what did I expect) and way too out there to entice most of the consumer zombies to do anything but laugh. He does say some important things about packaging, advertising, and brand names, as well as the ever insidious "planned obsolescence" consumers buy into with regularity. This is a well thought out and constructed book, but one with little practical value for this user.
Book Description
THREE SIMPLE STEPS FOR TRANSFORMING YOUR WORKPLACE. Every office has them: the ever-complaining colleague...the co-worker who is constantly late for meetings...the boss who either blows up at you or blows you off...or the one person who drives everyone else totally crazy. The problem is, the conventional methods -- like repeated warnings, threats, and heartfelt discussions -- for dealing with this negative behavior often don't seem to work. Drawing on a wealth of professional experience as well as forty years of research, Lucy Gill exposes the futility of these common practices and replaces them with a three-step strategy for creating a productive, conflict-free workplace: 1. Get to the heart of the matter by focusing on what the real problem is. 2. Determine what problem-solving methods to avoid so that you don't perpetuate the conflict. 3. Choose a different and even surprising approach that will solve the problem and keep it solved. Whether you're just starting out in your career or you already have an office along the executive corridor, How to Work with Just About Anyone provides the key to success, satisfaction, and sanity in the workplace.
Download Description
The staff member who is always late to meetings...the co-worker who constantly complains...the boss who blows up at everyone. Every workplace has at least one person who drives other people crazy. Drawing on forty years of research conducted by the Mental Research Institute of Palo Alto and her own extensive experience as a management consultant, Lucy Gill explains what works -- and what doesn't -- when dealing with problems that undermine a productive, conflict-free workplace atmosphere. Gill exposes the futility of common practices -- like repeated warnings, threats, and heartfelt attempts to persuade someone to perform a specific task -- and replaces them with effective solutions. Her simple, three step strategy teaches readers how to: -- Get to the heart of the matter by focusing on what the actual problem is -- Determine what problem-solving methods to avoid so you don't perpetuate the problem -- Choose a different (and often surprising approach that will solve the problem and keep it solved This book is full of anecdotes that will resonant with all office workers, whether they toil in the mail room or along the executive corridor.
Customer Reviews:
Powerful perspective that you can't find elsewhere.......2002-05-30
Lucy Gill presents a new approach to dealing with problem people at work that is simple, fresh and extremely useful. The bottom line? Stop using the same old methods that don't work for you. If you want to see new results, you've got to employ some of the new tricks put forth here. This book will help you, whether you are stumped on dealing with a boss or employee. If you have ever felt frustrated by a bully, nerd, lightweight, arrogant or some other problem-causing co-worker, then here is your book.
This well-written book is a quick, enjoyable read that will give you more power in those moments when you feel powerless.
Pretty good.......2002-05-09
I read a great deal of personal growth/self help books. This one has some good ideas, but it's not as good as alot of ones I've read. I must admit that Gill is a good, clear writer, and that she obviously understands the underlying theory that her suggestions are based on. She uses alot of examples to illustrate her points. The book is well laid out and easy to follow. I particularly like that it contains a summary of the steps at the end. The author also provides a (too brief) bibliography to give readers a chance to get more information and support in using the techniques presented.
Despite the fact that the book does have good points, and some people will probably find it useful, I didn't find it particularly helpful for me overall (although I did agree with certain points -- notably, the idea that people have a tendency to repeat the same mistakes). It's too short, and I find that the techniques she suggests, which are based on the work of Brief Therapists such as Paul Wazlawick, are too cognitively based -- I have an admitted bias against cognitive behaviourism. In my experience, some of the techniques she suggests are superficial and they don't lead to long term change. They don't get to the root of the issues between people and really allow you to connect and improve the relationship. If you want to do that, this book won't help.
If you just want to get along well enough to achieve a task, and aren't really interested in the long term health of the relationship or achieving true communication, some of the ideas here might work. But this approach deals with the symptoms, it doesn't get to the root of problems. Some would go so far as to say it involves being manipulative -- I'm not sure.
If you have some familiarity with solution focused therapy/thinking, and you generally believe in the benefits of that orientation, you will find this book of value. If, like me, you prefer a more humanistic, person-centred theory, you likely won't get as much out of this book. I'm glad I read it, and I did take a few ideas from it, but I've already put it in my "to give away" bag.
Original and practical.......2001-05-15
I recommend this book highly. As an IT manager I can testify to its practical tips for getting to the heart of a difficult situation and resolving it effectively. It's insightful, clever, witty and useful. The techniques presented can provide relief when dealing with a difficult colleague, superior or subordinate. I was particularly impressed with the methodologies for determining what the real problem is, instead of just complaining and "horribleizing." The solutions may well make you laugh, but they work.
Mental Aikido for Solution-Oriented People.......2000-11-08
Lucy Gill's realistic strategies add a significant number of new tools to the communication toolkit. The problem-solutions presentation is like mental aikido: you can see how to use the situation to help correct the situation.
I'm a project management consultant and coach for Internet startups. My clients can usually handle the technical problems; it's the people that challenge them, especially in hectic "instant company, instant culture" environments.
Lucy Gill's examples really tap an individual's "response-ability" to change their role in a situation and create solutions. I give my clients a copy of the book to reinforce our discussions - so they can take with them answers to the question "What do I say when I get back to my office?"
Good practical approach.....I'll be ready next time.......1999-10-25
Lucy Gill's "How to Work with Just About Anyone" hit close to home with me. Wish I had read this book before I gave up on a couple of projects because of people I couldn't work with. Hasn't happened to me often but when it did, I went half nuts fruitlessly trying those things that worked so well for me before with others, but now they didn't work at all. Lucy Gill is exactly on the mark, the harder I tried the worse things got.............the circular dance, she calls it. The book is too late for those particular projects but next time I'll be armed and ready. The first step of getting the problem clear with the "who is doing what to whom and how it is a problem" approach will not be forgotten. I'm half hoping I do get stuck in one of Ms Gill's feedback dance loops with someone again soon, just to try out her "doing the opposite" gambit.
One other thing, this book definitely should be read before your kids reach their teenage years.

Comparing the astronomy and cosmography of the Srimad-Bhagavatam and other Puranas to those of the Vedic astronomical treatises called jyotisa sastras, Dr. Thompson shows that the two versions are complementary, not contradictory. In this way he gives insight into both.
Customer Reviews:
Intriguing, Important, and Largely Underrated..........2002-04-06
Thompson, who holds a doctorate in mathematics from Cornell, has been a student of Vedic science for many years. This is apparent in his interpretation of the Srimad-Bhagavatam; he explores the possibilities of not only the diffusion of astornomical data and ideas between pre-Roman cultures, but also the possibilities that the Vedas refer to other dimensions and parallel universes -- concepts which have been seriously studied by Western physicists for only the past 60-70 years.
Unfortunately, Thompson is largely underrated or dismissed due to his work on "Forbidden Archaeology" by some critics. Not having read that work, I can only say the following: His contribution to a Western understanding of Vedic science, which occurs within this book, is of supreme importance. It is the best introduction to such Vedic science for Westerners by a Westerner that I have yet seen.
An interesting attempt to make sense of puranic astronomy.......2000-03-20
The author tries to postive intrepretations to the astronmical details found in Srimad Bhagavatam. In the process he is drawn to discuss the cosmology of purna and the standard scholar's attitude to these puranas. He weakens his case in chapter 6 & 7 by questioning much of modern astrophysics and the question about moon flight. Appendix 2 is quite important. Here he explores the question whether Aryabhata borrowed from Greek traditions to arrive at the planetary positions at the start of Kali yuga. This part deals with the debate on astronomy transfer among cultures. I recently drawn attention to his approach to astronomy in Bhagavatam ( including ideas in his paper Exact Science in Srimad Bhagavatam) to an Indian academic audience who have explord the histroy of kerala astronomy. Even the professor from Bhubaneswar, who presented about the astronomical works of Samanata Chandrasekhar ( who assisted Puri Temple in last centuary in arriving at calender) felt skeptical about Thompson's claims.
Highly evolved interpretation of cosmology!.......1998-07-27
A simple yet definitive interpretation of ancient Indian cosmology, cosmogony and cosmography for the highly suspicious and discerning scientific western mind!
Book Description
Introduction to Solid State NMR Spectroscopy is written for undergraduate and graduate students of chemistry, studying courses in nuclear magnetic resonance or undertaking research projects in this area. It will also serve as a useful introduction in industry, where researchers are turning to solid-state techniques to solve problems that are not amenable to other investigative techniques.By covering solid-state NMR spectroscopy in a clear, straightforward and approachable way with detailed descriptions of the major solid-state NMR experiments focussing on what the experiments do and what they tell the researcher, this book will serve as an ideal introduction to the subject. These descriptions are backed up by separate mathematical explanations for those who wish to gain a more sophisticated quantitative understanding of the phenomena. With additional coverage of the practical implementation of solid-state NMR experiments integrated into the discussion, this book will be essential reading for all those using, or about to use, solid-state NMR spectroscopy.
Customer Reviews:

Book Description
Mammoths, Sabertooths, and Hominids takes us on a journey through 65 million years, from the aftermath of the extinction of the dinosaurs to the glacial climax of the Pleistocene epoch; from the rain forests of the Paleocene and the Eocene, with their lemur-like primates, to the harsh landscape of the Pleistocene Steppes, home to the woolly mammoth. It is also a journey through space, following the migrations of mammal species that evolved on other continents and eventually met to compete or coexist in Cenozoic Europe. Finally, it is a journey through the complexity of mammalian evolution, a review of the changes and adaptations that have allowed mammals to flourish and become the dominant land vertebrates on Earth.
With the benefit of recent advances in geological and geophysical techniques, Jordi Agustí and Mauricio Antón are able to trace the processes of mammalian evolution as never before; events that hitherto appeared synchronous or at least closely related can now be distinguished on a scale of hundreds or even dozens of thousands of years, revealing the dramatic importance of climactic changes both major and minor. Evolutionary developments are rendered in magnificent illustrations of the many extraordinary species that once inhabited Europe, detailing their osteology, functional anatomy, and inferred patterns of locomotion and behavior. Based on the latest research and field work, Mammoths, Sabertooths, and Hominids transforms our understanding of how mammals evolved and changed the face of the planet.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to Read, but lots of Big Names.......2006-03-20
This is a fairly short, one volume introduction to sixty-five million years of life in Europe. Most of the interest, most of the books on evolutionary history seem to concentrate on the era of the dinosaurs. But when the comet hit, they were gone. Mammals took over the econogical niche previously held by the dinosaurs.
We seem to feel that the mammals jumped full blown into what we see today. This book details the history of how the mammals came to take over the top of the pyramid. At the beginning there was only the small almost rodent like mammals that had existed alongside the dinosaurs. The book begins here, but points out that there is relatively little record from that time. The mammals were small and difficult to find in fossil form. From here the book goes on to the evolution of humans during only the last couple of million years.
Well written and easy to read, the book covers a little known era. You will find though, an awful lot of new (and big) words to describe the various animals.
Tough to Read.......2005-09-18
"Mammoths, Sabertooths, and Hominids" describes the evolution of mammals in Europe over the past 65 million years, an immense stretch of time that this humble reader still struggles to comprehend. The author describes in detail the creatures that once lived in Europe, from the small and archaic, e.g. multituberculates, to the large and more modern, e.g. mammoths. Some mention is also made of non-mammals such as the killer birds and crocodiles. The book is lavishly illustrated with several full color plates in the center and numerous black-and-white sketches throughout the text. Mauricio Anton's pictures alone make the book worth owning for any prehistoric mammal enthusiast. The downside to this work, and why I only rate the book 4 stars, is that it's rather tough to read for someone who's not well-versed in the jargon of biology and paleontology. A glossary would have been really helpful. A hefty bibliography is supplied for those who wish to immerse themselves in the scholarly literature. I must admit that I had to start over a couple of times to grasp the material. This book isn't quite the readable account of mammalian evolution I was hoping for, having just recently been inspired to learn more about the subject by "Walking with Prehistoric Beasts". Students and grad-students in the field will certainly enjoy it, however.
A Must Have for those interested in Prehistoric mammals.......2003-08-20
This text is the best guide to Mammoths, Sabertooths and hominds. It provides in-depth information on any species that lived in Europe from the Eocene epoch to the Pleistocene. It also covers mammals from other contients that affected the Europeon fauna. For example, from Africa came the Gomphotheres, Dinotheres and Hominoid (and many more). I enjoyed the part of the book that covers the extinct Big Cats, especially Machairodus giganteus (My favourite of all). For those who want to buy this book should also try reading The Big Cats and their fossil relatives...another excellent book.
Best single guide on Cenozoic Mammals for general reader.......2003-03-15
This is a fantastic book. There is nothing else like it currently available. The best, most informative, guide to post-Cretaceous European mammals out there for the general reader. Beautiful pictures and detail-filled text will provide any lover of paleontology or indeed zoology with all the information they could possibly want. If you are student the book will also provide a valauble entree to 150 years of scholarship. Buy this while it is still available!
A core title for Paleontology Studies reading lists.......2002-06-06
Mammoths, Sabertooths, And Hominids: 65 Million Years Of Mammalian Evolution In Europe by Jordi Agusti (Director of the Institut de Paleontologia M. Crusafont, Sabadell, Barcelona, Spain) and Madrid based, scientific illustrator and artist Maurico Anton, is an astounding, informative, superbly presented tour through the 65 million years of mammalian evolution time-lined from the wake of the dinosaurs' extinction to the rise of modern Homo Sapiens. Mammoths, Sabertooths, And Hominids is an intimate, authoritative, scholarly study of the evolution of mammals, deftly illustrated in black and white with a color insert section that showcases breathtaking art of prehistoric wildlife, Mammoths, Sabertooths, And Hominids is a fascinating, enjoyable, accessible, and strongly recommended as a core title for Paleontology Studies reading lists and academic reference collections.

Book Description
This book by one of our most admired and influential medievalists offers a fundamental reconception of the person generally assumed to be the first woman writer in French, the author known as Marie de France. The Anonymous Marie de France is the first work to consider all of the writing ascribed to Marie, including her famous Lais, her 103 animal fables, and the earliest vernacular Saint Patrick's Purgatory.
Evidence about Marie de France's life is so meager that we know next to nothing about her-not where she was born and to what rank, who her parents were, whether she was married or single, where she lived and might have traveled, whether she dwelled in cloister or at court, nor whether in England or France. In the face of this great writer's near anonymity, scholars have assumed her to be a simple, naive, and modest Christian figure. Bloch's claim, in contrast, is that Marie is among the most self-conscious, sophisticated, complicated, and disturbing figures of her time-the Joyce of the twelfth century. At a moment of great historical turning, the so-called Renaissance of the twelfth century, Marie was both a disrupter of prevailing cultural values and a founder of new ones. Her works, Bloch argues, reveal an author obsessed by writing, by memory, and by translation, and acutely aware not only of her role in the preservation of cultural memory, but of the transforming psychological, social, and political effects of writing within an oral tradition.
Marie's intervention lies in her obsession with the performative capacities of literature and in her acute awareness of the role of the subject in interpreting his or her own world. According to Bloch, Marie develops a theology of language in the Lais, which emphasize the impossibility of living in the flesh along with a social vision of feudalism in decline. She elaborates an ethics of language in the Fables, which, within the context of the court of Henry II, frame and form the urban values and legal institutions of the Anglo-Norman world. And in her Espurgatoire, she produces a startling examination of the afterlife which Bloch links to the English conquest and occupation of medieval Ireland.
With a penetrating glimpse into works such as these, The Anonymous Marie de France recovers the central achievements of one of the most pivotal figures in French literature. It is a study that will be of enormous value to medievalists, literary scholars, historians of France, and anyone interested in the advent of female authorship.
Customer Reviews:
O lais.......2003-06-03
How wonderful to recieve an expertly guided tour through the corpus of Marie de France! Bloch writes in part to show the continuity of ideas and forms in the three works attributed to the twelfth century poet Marie de France. The Lais of Marie de France still receive attention in first year university humanities class. Bloch seems to reach a bit far in his effort to show Marie's "obsession with language". Bloch pleasingly works through the fables and shows the educative value of talking animals as well as the political values they reflect. The final work Bloch addresses is Marie's Saint Patrick's Purgatory. Bloch's final chapter on discussing Ireland and the colonization of purgatory is absolutely fabulous. Bloch uses different methods (deconstructive criticism, psychoanalytical criticism, new historicism) to approach Marie's texts, but this diversely constructed philology creates some stunning results. There is much to admire in this new book by Bloch. I am convinced it will make extraordinarily useful reading for those interested in Marie de France or early French literature and history. Analysis of the poetry, rhythms, and forms is lacking, perhaps because such analysis matters not as much as Marie's and Bloch's obsession for language.
