Proving the value of coaching.......2005-03-29
Coaching That Counts is a must read if you are a corporate, executive or business coach or a consumer of coaching. This book takes the reader step-by-step through the process of creating and executing coaching initiatives that maximize the value for both the individual being coached and the organizations in which the coaching is conducted.
The authors clearly demonstrate (through empirical data and anecdotal stories) that the key for any successful coaching initiative is to link the objectives of coaching to the strategic goals of the organization. The book is organized to support this insight and opens with a thorough discussion of a client-driven coaching model that delivers lasting change. The second part of Coaching That Count focuses on how to harness the value of coaching at the individual level and direct that value to produce tangible results to the business. The third part of this book provides a complete understanding of how to develop evaluations that clearly link coaching initiatives to business goals, including how to demonstrate ROI.
Coaching That Counts provides both a blueprint and the tools for building, executing and evaluating a successful coaching initiative.
I highly recommend this book!
Exceptional Contribution to Executive Coaching Field .......2005-02-21
"Coaching That Counts" is a must read, particularly for the experienced executive coach and/or the corporate executive managing large scale coaching and leadership development programs.
Many fine books have been written separately on the topics of executive coaching and organizational development and learning. What sets "Coaching That Counts" apart is how it expertly combines the two topics seamlessly in a clear, readable and immediately useful format.
The husband-wife team of Diana and Merrill Anderson share generously their 30 plus years of combined expertise and insights in their roles as executive coach, corporate leader and organizational researcher.
The authors are pioneers in their respective fields. Diana is a superb and gifted executive and leadership coach and one of the first Master Certified Coaches with the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Merrill has contributed foundational and pivotal research-models for measuring return on investment (ROI) impact for training and coaching initiatives.
The book is divided into two parts. The first half describes in detail a comprehensive and provocative coaching model, called "Leading With Insight". The model describes 4 coaching quadrants: Reflective, Emotional, Intuitive and Inspirational. Each key coaching quadrant is expertly described first conceptually and then through case study presentations.
The second half of the book details very useful quantitative and qualitative ROI approaches for measuring coaching impact. Additionally excellent chapters are also included focusing on key steps, considerations and insights for conceptualizing, initiating and measuring large scale organizational change-coaching programs.
Of particular interest in the Leading with Insight model is the authors' observation that most current coaching work focuses on the first 2 quadrants, which asks the questions, What do I need to do now? and What am I made of? The authors explain that most ROI impact however occurs in Quadrant III and IV, which focuses on Organizational Alignment and Original Action. They share that less than 50% of coaching relationships currently evolve beyond Quadrant II, but that 70% of return on investment derives from gains in Quadrant III and IV. This has enormous implications for future executive coaching focus and pay-off.
In summary, this book is a call to action, challenging the reader to work deeper within themselves and with their clients to achieve broader, more impactful coaching outcomes and execute more accurate and measurable Coaching ROI analysis.

Book Description
Legal Socialization - A Study of Norms and Rules examines the varying responses, negative and positive, to rule enforcement, as well as the genesis of these responses and the conditions under which they occur. The book presents the results of a longitudinal, multi-methodological study of the dynamic interaction be tween norms of behavior and rule enforcement in a natural setting, specifically, a university residential community. This approach allowed for the testing of competing hypotheses drawn from social learning and cognitive developmental theory to determine which was more substantively predictive of legal socialization. The first major section discusses the vital issues involved in understanding legal socialization; the two major legal socialization theories; and the research design of the study carried out by the authors. The second part concentrates on empirically testing the predictions of legal development theory versus social learning theory. The final section explores the interaction between reasoning and rule-enforcing conditions and its importance for understanding legal socialization.
Book Description
The highly successful Clementine mission to the Moon in 1994 gave scientists their first global look at the Moon, and both the near and far side were mapped. This atlas is based on the data collected by the Clementine mission. It covers the entire Moon in 144 Lunar Aeronautical Charts (LACs), and represents the most complete lunar nomenclature database in existence, listing virtually all named craters and other features. This is the first atlas to show the entire lunar surface in uniform scale and format. A section of color plates shows lunar composition and physical properties.
Customer Reviews:
Finally, a serious lunar atlas for us.......2007-01-10
If you are looking for a book with a lot of pretty pictures of the lunar surface, take a big pass on The Clementine Atlas of the Moon.
If, however, you are looking for a professional lunar atlas utilizing spacecraft photos, this is your book. The images shown on the pages of The Clementine Atlas of the Moon are reproduced at the same scale and under nearly identical lighting conditions. This alone provides a consistency that has been sorely lacking in lunar atlases made from photographs taken by other NASA spacecraft.
The main part of the atlas features 144 plates made from images taken at the 750nm wavelength by the Clementine spacecraft launched in 1994. Plates generally correspond to the LAC (Lunar Aeronautical Chart) system of the early 1960s. The plates, each with a two degree by two degree grid overlay, are on even number pages. A small inset map of the front and near side is at the upper left-hand corner of each plate and shows its location on the lunar surface. Corresponding maps annotated with the names of various prominent features are on the facing odd number pages. Each map also has a grid and indicates the plate numbers to the north, south, east and west. The atlas must be turned ninety degrees to the right for use and north is always on top (or "up"). At the lunar equator a plate is 20 degrees wide in longitude and 16 degrees height in latitude and physically measures 23 cm by 18.5 cm. The entire moon is covered.
Image quality is very good, but the plates themselves are somewhat bland due to the fact that the lighting is overhead, or at lunar noon. Nonetheless, there was not a single feature for which I searched that I could not find. The somewhat generous plate scale, about 1.1 cm per degree at the equator, and grid makes finding lunar features fairly straightforward if you are armed only with a set of coordinates.
The front part of the book, about 40 pages, describes modern lunar exploration, the Clementine mission itself, and the atlas. This section ends with maps of the near and far sides that are overlaid with the LAC system of chart numbers to provide a quick guide reference guide. The back portion of the atlas offers a 25-page gazetteer which keys in names of lunar features to coordinates and atlas plate numbers. I found only one discrepancy in the gazetteer for features I needed to find. The crater Leakey is shown to be on plate 79, but was not indicated on its corresponding annotated map.
I did find it curious that the six Apollo landing site are designated on the appropriate plates, but Ranger, Surveyor, Luna and Lunokhod landing sites are not. Perhaps "boots on the ground" was the criteria for inclusion. This, however, is nitpicking as The Clementine Atlas of the Moon should be an essential part of any serious student-of-the-moon's library, whether that person is an amateur or professional.
The best yet!.......2004-07-20
The Clementine Lunar Atlas of the Moon, by Bussey & Spudis, provides a wealth of information on basic lunar facts, history, and exploration (part 1), and is the best global compilation of lunar geography and imagery in one book to date (part 2). The remarks of the Italian reviewer concerning the figures in part 1 are overstated. One of the figures is blurred, however, none of the figures appear as badly scanned from another book and carelessly pasted in the text. In addition, the criticism about the pixel size of some of the global remotely sensed element maps is unwarranted. The reader is observing the data at the resolution Lunar Prospector acquired it (~60 km per pixel). There just isn't anything that can be done about it except go back to the Moon and acquire better, higher resolution measurements.
The atlas fills an important niche in my collection. A reference guide to finding any crater named in any article I am reading, and getting a good first-order understanding of the crater's local geography. The quantity of craters named (using the Madler system), the extent of coverage (both the far side and near side of the Moon), and the comparable (Nadir) viewing geometry of all the images makes this atlas a must have for lunar scientists, gradstudents, and amateur astronomers alike.
A fantastic resource for lunar enthusiasts.......2004-05-27
This book represents a groundbreaking and unique resource for both professional and amateur lunar enthusiasts. The first section of the book consists of a concise, yet comprehensive review of lunar exploration and lunar science. The authors bring many years of experience to bear on a subject in which they are clearly well versed and highly knowledgable.
The main section of the book represents the first global atlas of the Moon covering both the near and the far sides, and as such is an unique and unprecendented resource. The Clementine images have been reproduced at a high quality and the use of annotated shaded relief maps ensures an unobscured view of the Clementine mosaics.
Finally, the atlas contains the most complete gazeteer of lunar features ever produced.
I have to disagree with the other reviewer's comments about the book. The book was clearly never intended to primarily be a general interest book about lunar exploration (many excellent books on this subjects already exist). Instead it is intended to be an atlas of use to both professional researchers and amateur astronomers (and would no doubt be an interesting addition to any coffee table), and it fills this role admirably.
A missed opportunity for a great content.......2004-05-22
This book has been released more than one year later than the initial scheduled date. Previously I read several astronomy books issued by the same editor, being some of them atlas (Compact NASA Atlas of the Solar System) or specifically dedicated to Solar System objects (Planetary Sciences, The New Solar System, The Giant Planet Jupiter,...) and others catalogues or handbooks (Planetary Observer's Handbook, Observing the Moon,...): in any case the quality, both of the contents and the edition, was very good if not excellent. I had therefore great expectations about this specific book, but, as soon as I received it, I was greatly disappointed. It is divided in two sections: the first is a general discussion about the Moon and its properties (geological history, motion in space, lunar exploration by the Americans and the Soviets). The section ends with a discussion of the Lunar Prospector and Clementine Missions. I have not read this section deeply, but the names of the two authors should make a warrant for its content. I would in any case rate it quite general, if not common or superficial. Furthermore, the few photographs in it, all selected from well known images taken from the various missions to the moon, are of exceedingly poor quality: in fact they look as if badly scanned from an other book and carelessly pasted in the text. They give you the idea of an unfortunate draft version of the book. The same applies to the few graphs reported.
Second section is the true atlas, in black and white: facing pages contain on the left the Clementine 750 nm images and on the right a digital global shaded relief images by the USGS (1 cm on the image or maps corresponds to roughly 25 km on the Moon in Mercator projection). A lat./long. grid is superimposed on the both of them: the lines are white and look as if they were drawn with Paintbrush! The map on the right is reproduced so that pixels stand out as large as a square with the side up to 0.5-1 mm long.
Furthermore the paper quality is poor: leaves are opaque.
I am not discussing the contents, that are in any case worth of the book, But I still think that such a book should have deserved much more attention by the editor, better quality, deeper review: if you are searching for top quality images and edition such as those of the compact NASA Atlas of the Solar System, well, probably you should better save your money!

Book Description
Robert Trivers is a pioneering figure in the field of sociobiology. For Natural Selection and Social Theory, he has selected eleven of his most influential papers, including several classic papers from the early 1970s on the evolution of reciprocal altruism, parent-offspring conflicts, and asymmetry in sexual selection, which helped to establish the centrality of sociobiology, as well as some of his later work on deceit in signalling, sex antagonistic genes, and imprinting. Trivers introduces each paper, setting them in their contemporary context, and critically evaluating them in the light of subsequent work and further developments. The result is a unique portrait of the intellectual development of sociobiology, with valuable insights for evolutionary biology, anthropology, and psychology.
Customer Reviews:
Classic paper, plus plus why, PLUS where too now.......2006-02-28
This book contains all of Robert Triver's best papers.
In addition, each is book-ended between a two short essays outlining the background to Professor Trivers' initial exploration and thinking behind the paper, often including quite intriguing sociological contexts. Then, which is extremely valuable, Triver's brings the reader up-to-date with the subsequent history of the idea in that paper: who did it influence? Does he still believe it? What is the current hot take on the area?
It is a magnificent tribute to a life-time of work, and valuable for anyone active in the area of evolution.
Essential reading for social scientists and others.......2004-02-11
This is a beautiful book. It combines seminal papers with anecdotes and a post-scripts which place the paper in their context and make it easier for those of us who have been consumers of socio-biology to better appreciate the significance of the ideas presented. Trivers is a compelling writer and this book is a true gift to anybody curious about human psyche and behaviour. Highly recommended.
Yippee!!!.......2002-11-30
Those of us who are interested in the stories behind just HOW major breakthroughs in evolutionary and ecological thought were made have been spoiled in recent years: First there was W.D. Hamilton's marvelous 2 volume NARROW ROADS OF GENE LAND, now we get Bob Triver's wonderful NATURAL SELECTION AND SOCIAL THEORY. Here, in one place, one can find most of Trivers' revolutionary work on the evolution of social behavior, and as an added bonus one also gets Trivers' unvarnished -and often highly entertaining- commentary on just how he came to put together the ideas that -love 'em or hate 'em- provided much of the driving force behind Sociobiology & ultimately lead to Behavioural Ecology and Evolutionary Psychology. Along the way we are introduced to a fascinating cast of characters, ranging from Ernst Mayr, the foremost living Darwinian, through the neo-Marxist wing of Harvard, to Huey Newton, ex-Minister of Defense for the Black Panthers. Trivers' thinking is as eclectic and far ranging as the list of his friends and enemies, and while many of his subjects (altruism, parent-offspring conflict, fluctuating asymmetry, etc.) are still at the cutting edge of evolutionary thought, his writing is sufficiently free of jargon that I think it will draw in even the non-specialist. You may not agree with everything that Trivers says here -and I suspect that some folks will be offended by his candor- but this is a really important book & I see it as essential reading for any of us interested in the question of why we may do so many of the things that we do. Bravo!
Book Description
This insightful examination of the history and extinction of one of Australia's most enduring folkloric beasts--the thylacine, (or Tasmanian tiger)-- challenges conventional theories. It argues that rural politicians, ineffective political action by scientists, and a deeper intellectual prejudice about the inferiority of marsupials actually resulted in the extinction of this once proud species. Hb ISBN (2000):0-521-78219-8
Customer Reviews:
a book that does what the title says.......2002-05-15
i write this recommendation to emphasise to potential readers that this is a very worthy study of the extinction of the Thylacine. whilst true that this book will not inspire hope that this most unique of creatures survives, it does unravel the reasoning behind it's rapid fall into extinction. Paddle offers a gentle introduction to the species' biology and ecology, aswell as a history in captivity, but it is his research of bounty records and contemperary accounts that sets this work above others. scientific maybe, but well planned, researched and written, and the twist he brings in regarding the reason for the bounty is worthy of an agatha christie novel! an excellent piece of work and well suited to conservation biologists, natural historians and anyone with an interest in the twentieth century's greatest loss.
Controversial Theories Versus Accepted Logic.......2001-03-19
Robert Paddle's controversial book, The Last Tasmanian Tiger, attempts to overturn most previously accepted anecdotal reasoning on a subject that is fast becoming popular world wide. Paddle has rather recklessly thrown caution to the wind in his sometimes dangerous dismantilling of sound anecdotal evidence, replacing it with his own logic, which is in many cases sadly wide of the mark. The Last Tasmanian Tiger could prove to be a dangerous book in the wrong hands, for it could lead astray those tender souls genuinely seeking information of this unique creature. Being pro-scientific as it is, Paddle's book is written in a style that can be hard to decipher for us mere mortals. But, all this aside, Paddle has done a tremendous ammount of research in assembling his book, some of it ground breaking, and from this point alone it makes worthwhile reading. The Last Tasmanian Tiger is definitely not suitable for the novice thylacine enthusiast.

The Americans are Coming.......2002-12-28
Herb Curtis' writing about the folklore surrounding New Brunswick's Miramichi River takes me back to my childhood recollections of Mark Twain's tales of the Mississippi. You'll never know what's around the bend in the river. The characters are brought to life through colorful experiences we can all relate to. Now that I've read the first of the trilogy I am an avid fan. Thank you, Herb Curtis for restoring my childhood wonderment!
Americans Are Coming & Last Tasmanian.......2001-06-03
I have just finished reading "The Americans Are Coming" & "The Last Tasmanian" by Herb Curtis and these are real great books for anyone from N.B. or anyone who just wanted a bit of humor although I suggest you read all 3 books if you can because they are all equally great although the ending isn't really up to par on the first 2 books as it is a trilogy.
The American"s Are Coming.......2000-02-08
Being From the Miramichi, and live approxiamately about two miles from the authour, Herb Curtis. I can really relate to this book. Everything from the slang words, to the subject matter is based on things that you would probably only hear on the Miramichi. If your looking for a good laugh and a little Miramichi humor, this is definately a must read book! For a little insight to what all the slang words and sayings used, make sure to read "Look What The Cat Drug In", or "Miramichi Dictionary - An Interpretive Guide".
