The CD is a good introduction to Financial Accounting. I think it's overpriced for what you get though.

New employee orientation is the most commonly offered type of training in organizations, yet very few books have been published on the topic. Creative New Employee Orientation Programs is filled with downloadable, customizable training games, sample curriculum, handouts, and checklists used in leading organizations such as Arthur Anderson, Ford, Micron, and Alcatel. Whether creating an orientation program for the first time, enhancing an existing program, or moving orientation on-line, HR pros will find ideas and tools they can use immediately.

                  4 out of 5 stars Helpful guidelines.......2007-06-01

This book is a great place to start when creating or updating an employee orientation. The nice thing about it is you can use some or all of the information provided to suit your needs. It is organized well and is easy to find what you're looking for.

                  5 out of 5 stars great service.......2006-01-15

                  great service, excellent book

                  5 out of 5 stars Everything Orientation.......2005-06-21

This is a compendium of almost everything that one might need to create or improve existing orientation programs. From best practices in orientation videos, small businesses, intern & buddy programs to case studies from companies like Ford and Alcatel.

The book also includes numerous useful lists, tools and aids that can be reproduced or used as a basic template for planning new orientation as well as evaluating and improving existent programs. In other words, this is a practical book filled with implementable ideas and suggestions guaranteed to make your new hires feel 'special' and at the same time, taking them through all the knowledge and information bits that they need to learn in a fun and engaging manner.

I found the case studies chapters very informative and particularly enjoyed Part 5 of the book: Orientation Games & Activities which includes 18 very useful and effective games like the hunt for company policies which turns a normally boring part of any orientation program into a really fun activity.

Also quite useful was the Part 6: Orientation Checklists & Surveys covering such areas as 'Before the Employee's First Day'; 'I'm New Here - What Should I Learn?'; and 'A 90-day New Employee Survey'.

                  5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2003-08-28

I have often been asked how new employee orientation programs can be both lively and informative. I have recommended Doris Sim's terrific book to several people. Routinely, I am thanked for passing along this title. It has helped many companies.

                    Book Description

Outstanding imagery, stunningly presented. Perceptive text from award-winning science writer James Trefil. A foreword by David H. Levy, discoverer of 21 comets. Put them all together and you get Other Worlds: Images of the Cosmos from Earth and Space.

Bonnie Gordon, editor of Astronomy magazine, calls this "a gorgeously produced book about our solar system, the larger universe, and our place in both....Few writers give you as much insight as Trefil. Few will make you feel you understand the story of planetary evolution or how scientists discovered the distances to neighboring stars."

Paul H. Knappenberger, president of Chicago's Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum, agrees, calling Trefil "a superb guide" with "a splendid overview of astronomy." Join in this armchair journey through the universe, which sparkles with the best images available from all sources, including ground-based observatories, landers, flybys, and other missions, as well as the Hubble Space Telescope.

Other Worlds, says Knappenberger, "is a masterful balance of beautiful, full-color photographs and clearly written, insightful information about the cosmos....Jim Trefil takes the reader on a mind-expanding adventure that begins with our own star, the sun, then moves outward through the planets and moons of our solar system. He leads us past the stars and gas clouds of our Milky Way galaxy and beyond to the myriad other distant galaxies that populate the expanding universe. Along the way we encounter such exotic objects as black holes and quasars, and witness galactic cannibalism.

"Trefil explains in a clear and easily readable manner our evolving understanding of the complex nature of the cosmos, and how scientists have gone about exploring the universe....Everyone who is curious about space and our place within the grand scheme of things will want to have this book."

Highly acclaimed science writer James Trefil is the Clarence J. Robinson Professor of Physics at George Mason University and is on the Science Advisory Board for National Public Radio. He has written numerous books on science for the general public, including The Moment of Creation, The Dark Side of the Universe, From Atoms to Quarks, and Are We Alone? Winner of the AAAS-Westinghouse Award for science writing, Trefil also contributes to Smithsonian, Science, and USA Today.

                    5 out of 5 stars Incredible Closeups.......2003-03-08

Although I started out rating this a "4", I changed my mind and gave it a "5", mainly because I found it for half price and also because some of these pictures are so marvelous that it's scary. You've never seen the Eagle or Helix nebulae like this before and some of the pictures within our own solar system give you a good idea of what it must be like if you're out there--scary. Away from Earth and in a desolate zone millions of miles away. Galaxies, star clusters, etc.. are so much more defined than the photographs of these wonders that come from Earth-based observatories. No atmospheric turbulence and also great photos from the greatest scope man has invented. Galileo would marvel at the photographs of Jupiter and its Moons, which he first discovered long ago. He sure didn't see them like this.

4 out of 5 stars Great photos, simple text.......2002-02-02

This is another sumptuously produced book from the National Geographic Society. The text is a little "mickey-mouse" by my standards, but the photos, many from NASA planetary missions are Hubble, are beautifully reproduced and well worth the price of admission.

The book is divided into sections: inner planets, outer planets, and deep space, with text and photos (in that order) for each.
Nicely done and well worth browsing.

4 out of 5 stars Many spectacular images!.......2001-10-04

The book goes from the sun and the solar system, through galaxies and nebulas, up to the edges of the known universe, giving great and worthy images (and info) in each "station", all printed on a high quality paper, of course. Especially good are the images from the galaxies and nebulas. Those from the near planets I liked a bit less, and I've seen better ones elsewhere...
The text all the way is well written and enjoyable to read. It gives, in addition to the info about each object, some nice (but basic) introduction to astronomy in general - things such as how distance from stars is measured, how light coming from objects is analyzed, astronomy history etc...
However, as it covers the entire universe, it is, as you might think (considering it's size...), pretty basic - both the images and the info. It gives just a small (but good!) taste of everything, not going too deep anywhere.

All in all, it's an excellent book, but I think it'll be worthy to you only if you don't have many other astronomy books, since it's pretty basic.

4 out of 5 stars Another Good Photo Book of Space by National Geographic.......2001-07-27

Over the years, the National Geographic Society has produced many excellent books about the exploration of space such as Mars by Raeburn and Golembek and Orbit by Jay Apt. This time they have chosen some of the best photographs obtained from the various NASA probes to the planets and the Hubble space telescope. Most of the book is filled with many high quality photographs (all color) and includes only some supporting text. For this reviewer, the small amount of text was a nice bonus, since it increased my viewing pleasure. I found this book to be a good addition to my collection of space related books.

Approximately two-thirds of this book covers our sun, its planets and the minor objects like asteroids and comets. The book contains the latest photographs from the Mars Pathfinder, Mars Global Surveyor and Galileo space probes as well as the many classic photographs taken during the early years of the space program. The final third of the book contains deep space photographs mostly taken by the Hubble telescope. These photographs examine many of the more famous deep sky objects, like the Eagle and Helix Nebulae, but also include numerous galaxies and super novae photographs. Again, the latest and highest quality photographs are shown here.

If you like a book that is filled with many high quality photographs of our solar system and deep sky objects, this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Other Worlds - Read often shelf.......2000-01-19

                      Book Description

Sir John Eccles, a distinguished scientist and Nobel Prize winner who has devoted his scientific life to the study of the mammalian brain, tells the story of how we came to be, not only as animals at the end of the hominid evolutionary line, but also as human beings possessed of reflective consciousness.

Eccles traces the line of human evolutionary descent through developments such as skilled bipedal walking and dawning spirituality, linking them with the growth of the human brain. He conjectures that the beginning of human language came with Homo habilis and its greatly enlarged brain, while the mystery of self-consciousness is related to the newly developing neocortical areas of the brain.

5 out of 5 stars Evolution of the Mammalian Brain ca 1990........2004-04-09

Sir John Eccles has written a gem. The book is mostly devoted to the evolution of the Hominid Brain and Skull. There is a good discussion and overview of CNS neurophysiology. This book is the main book to start with on the subject of Brain Evolution. The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Human Evolution goes into more detail on the Primate Brain. The Encyclopedia should be used as a reference book alongside Eccles book. Eccles understanding of the nervous system was better than most other scientists at the time this book was written. Falk wrote a book worth looking at. Primate Brain Evolution is out of print, but can also complement the approaches in the other texts.

                            Book Description

Armed with a copy of "The Fine Art of Flirting", a stash of dirty books and a precocious attitude, fifteen year old Pei Yi leaves her sheltered life in small-town Malaysia to accept an ASEAN scholarship at a secondary school in competitive, some might say "kiasu", Singapore. Not since Adrian Mole have the growing pains of a geeky teenager been so painfully exposed to the rest of us! In "My Kiasu Teenage Life in Singapore", author Ee Lin See weaves a charming tale of teenage angst and exposes the lighter side of Singapore into the bargain. A great read for adults and teens alike.

In Singapore, the word kiasu is a widely used term that both describes and laughs at the competitive nature of Singaporean culture. Fifteen-year-old Pei Yi discovers the true meaning of kiasu firsthand when she moves from her sheltered life in a small Malaysian town and accepts a scholarship to live and study in Singapore.

In My Kiasu TeenageLife in Singapore, author Ee Lin See weaves a charming tale of a teenage girl and her adventures as she navigates through all that life has to offer in a big city on her path to adulthood.

5 out of 5 stars Ee Lin is a Joy.......2005-12-21

Lucky me! I was fortunate enough to read this book while the author was looking for a publisher. I found it so utterly delightful, it was an honor to encourage her as she went through all the usual hassles of finding a first publisher.

Ee Lin's own wonderful energy and enthusiasm flows into everything she writes. In real life, she has a wealth of friends from around the world visiting her Manhattan apartment, and her love for people comes through in her marvelous knack for creating funny and interesting characters, people who come alive and don't fit the usual teen-book stereotypes. (Some, I freely admit, are people you love to hate.) She even illustrates her work with her own school-girl art. I'd never be that brave! Not in a million years.

Ee Lin has kept in touch with what it means to be teen far from home and a family she loves. Read her, and you will never imagine that she studied economics at one of the most elite universities in the U.S. and has a demanding job trading stocks and bonds on Wall Street. This is a book about growing up by someone who has been successful at growing up. That's important.

I wish her all the best in life and hope this book isn't her last. She is a joy to read and a joy to know!

4 out of 5 stars Funny and entertaining.......2005-08-29

I came across this book completely by accident. I caught the word 'kiasu' and being an Indonesian working for Sg company and understand pretty much the culture in Singapore, I was very interested to know what's inside. I bought this and did not regret it. I read it the whole book in one sitting and was very sleepy at work. Hee hee.

The book is basically about the edu system in Sg and the kiasuism of Singaporeans which though in some points admirable, can also be depressing up to a point frightening. Everyone tries to get the best mark, be the best in everything. The Singapore education is expensive, however, it also presents great opportunity for students who have talents and abilities.

The life of students in Sg is described quite vividly. It's funny to read many familiar words or places in the book. Some parts of the books made me laugh out loud too..
Too bad the ending is not very exciting and pretty abrupt. I was expecting some 'closure' to the life of the main character there, but it just ended.

But overall, I would definitely recommend this book to all the prospectus students or students who are studying in Singapore. It's very enlightning and could even be used as a guide on how to live and study in Singapore. Cheers!
