Book Description
Too little, too late! Everyone regrets missing the boat now and then. But when it comes to estate planning, too little, too late means less -- often a lot less -- for your heirs. That's where this straightforward, easy-to-use guide comes in. Judge Jane Lucal meshes her years of experience as a probate judge with sound financial planning concepts. Having seen every mistake imaginable firsthand in the courtroom, she helps families anticipate the pitfalls of estate planning and capitalize on the slew of techniques that can maximize the transfer of wealth from generation to generation.
In down-to-earth, straightforward language, the book explains why estate planning is so important, how you can calculate your net worth, and what asset protection options you can apply to your own situation. Judge Jane explains her "cornerstone concepts", the five basic questions you need to ask yourself about your estate plan.
The book highlights real-life tales from the courtroom to illustrate Judge Jane's practical approach to estate planning. It shows readers how to integrate financial and legal planning for long-term positioning that translates into real money accumulated over the years. The author also offers insights on preparing for unforeseen events by building flexibility into the plan.

Highly Recommended!.......2002-04-08
Jane B. Lucal, a probate judge in Erie County, Ohio, describes how to implement early estate planning in order to make the best financial choices for yourself and your family. She begins by discussing the need for estate planning based on identifying your goals and your net worth. She suggests ways to preserve your estate while taking state laws into consideration. Lucal discusses the probate process and helps you prepare for it. One by one, she explains various estate planning tools, such as annuities, charitable donations, gifts, insurance, retirement plans, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, wills, property deeds, trusts and disability planning. getAbstract appreciated her wrap-up of seven key steps for setting up your own estate plan. The bigger your assets, the more you need this book. (Note: the legal nature of this information means the book is probably useful only for those living in the United States.)
Win Win Investment.......2002-01-11
I have spent a lot of money and time with attorneys, etc. to put together a sound and productive estate plan. As an octogenarian, I don't have much time to maneuver and so reading JUDGE JANE'S "Plan Now or Pay Later" convinces me that younger people have an advantage of a book about a very complicated(made so by many in the profession)matter which is nevertheless of importance to every living person. The "case study" feature of this book is unique and the best learning tool I have seen. After all these years, my eyes were opened and my understanding enhanced. YOUNG PEOPLE-for around twenty bucks don't miss this opportunity to put and keep your affairs in order. This is a win win investment!

Brand maven Adam Morgan, author of Eating the Big Fish, wants you to free your inner pirate and sail under the flag of the brand rather than the company. Morgan frames his brand-building advice by comparing time in the Navy (becoming a "corporate drone") with the life of a marketing pirate ("who does what is important, regardless of wisdom offered around us.")
Pirates, who challenge dominant brands, have a code. But it does not include the virtues of respecting the parent company, people's space, or the ways things have always been. Morgan draws upon 50 interviews with pirates from brand challenging companies including Diesel, Tommy Bahama, and Southwest airlines. His pirates dazzle with daring do: Apple's Steve Jobs, who shows what Morgan calls "emotional insertion" when he says, "Today we put the romance into computers" or Ingvar Kamprad, Founder of IKEA, who, in a Chinese chicken market, models "insights of opportunity" as he wonders how he can use the extra feathers.
For those of us without sea legs, Morgan offers four crisp sets of behavior to become a brand pirate and five personality traits to foster a challenger culture. Morgan is a wonderfully engaging writer, but sometimes his nautical analogies can get diluted by other metaphors. His ideas for helping challenger brands take on the big fish bristle with energy, originality--and above all--practicality. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Most marketing and branding books fall into one of two camps: either they are about leaders or they assume that brands can be managed by process alone. The Pirate Inside is different. It forwards the idea that brands are about people, and Challenger Brands are driven by a certain kind of person in a certain kind of way. Challenger Brands don't rely on CEOs or founders, but on the people within the organization whose personal qualities and approach to what they do make the difference between whether the brand turns to gold or falls to dust.
In line with this thinking, The Pirate Inside forwards two key questions: what does it take to be the driver or guardian of a successful Challenger Brand, and what are the demands made by this on character and corporate culture? Building on his answers, Adam Morgan then explores the critical issue of whether big, multi-brand companies can create Challenger micro-climates within their companies, and the benefits that they might achieve by doing so.

Lacking, lacking and more lacking.......2007-02-20
It pains me to say that I was disappointed with Adam Morgan's second offering. His first book on challenger branding, 'Eating the Big Fish', was such a brilliant read. 'The Pirate Inside' got off to a promising start, but then parts of it began to seem like a rehash of 'Eating the Big Fish' (minus the brilliant insights). Other parts of the book seemed unnecessarily drawn-out, possibly because they lacked substance. Some of the advice in this book is old news. I found the section on challenger teams especially tedious. Adam tries to make old news sound new again by changing the labels (for example, Ideas People are now known as Ideas Hamsters).
'Eating the Big Fish' closes with a guide to running a two-day challenger branding workshop in your company. Like the rest of the book, it was brilliant. 'Pirate Inside' tries to close on a similar note, but I thought the guide was mostly fluff...the kind of thing you'd pay a consultant big bucks for, only to feel cheated when you get presented with six hours of buzzwords, some cool charts and nothing really helpful.
Adam uses the words 'soft centre, soft shell' to describe a weak brand strategy. I think 'Pirate Inside' has a big gooey one.
Book Description
Which is larger, Sirius or Vega? What is the luminosity of Rigel? When will Mira come up to full brightness? Here's one simple-to-use reference which quickly answers these questions and many more. This handy star catalog gives the characteristics of over 2,000 stars to a brightness of 5.25 visual magnitude (plus many dimmer exceptions) updated with Epoch 2000 data. The book brings together information not available in any other single source. Employing a unique, easy-to-use constellation-by-constellation format, StarList 2000 gives you all these properties for each star: location, visual and absolute magnitude, spectra, distance in light years, proper motion, spatial and radial velocity, parallax, size, and luminosity. Notes compare discrepancies in data from well-known sources and point out additional interesting facts and figures about selected stars and deep sky objects, such as nearby nebulae. There are special sections on binaries and variables. Rapid-motion binaries are covered in detail, giving exact locations at January 1, 2000. There is also a collection of drawn orbits and a listing of orbital elements of selected binaries. Data on variable stars include type of variability, maximum and minimum visual magnitude, epoch, and period of variability. The author also offers a unique feature"Most Favorable Viewing Date"that tells readers when variables are expected to be at their brightest. StarList 2000 includes an appendix of computer programs for calculating such information as the Julian Date, the date of midnight transit for any star, and the azimuth and altitude of any star viewed from your own backyard. Indexes list stars by right ascension, popular name, and constellation.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for Astronomy buffs and Science Fiction buffs.......2000-10-28
This book has three parts: the Starlist, the visual binary stars (includes drawn orbits), and the variable stars (includes graphs of maxima/minima). Excellent ephemerides.
The first part, the Starlist, has been an indispensable source of information. Stars are listed by constellation and includes: RA/Dec, spectral classification, absolute magnitude, apparent magnitude, distance (in light years), parallax, proper motion, direction of apparent motion (disregarding precession), space velocity, radial velocity (where known), size (in solar diameters), luminosity, and Henry Draper Catalogue star reference number (HD). There are many remarks/comments throughout, on various stars. These remarks are concise and helpful, and show Mr. Dibon-Smith's love for the field. Think of it as a one volume condensed Burnham's Celestial Handbook.
The second section of this book, visual binaries, includes the combined magnitude, apparent magnitude of each component (with a few exceptions, only the brightest pair of a multiple system), PA/Sep, and orbital information. At the end of the section is a graphic representation of the orbits of binaries with periods of 300 years or less.
The third section, variable stars. They are listed by subgroup: pulsating, eruptive, rotating, peculiar, eclipsing, and type uncertain. The first part has graphs of the maxima/minima of Mira type stars, and some semiregular variable stars. Part three also lists type of variable, maximum range, epoch, period, and best viewing dates.
That's not all this book offers. There is a section on computer programs (in BASIC) to find: day of the week (given the Julian date), Julian date (given the calendar date), calendar date/day of the week (given the Julian date), position of a star (given the RA/Dec and latitude/longitude of the observer), RA on the meridian (given the calendar date), midnight transit of a star (given the RA), and the approximate date of maxima of a long-period variable. Another section lists stars by RA. Another section identifies star names (fun if you had no idea where Zubenalgubi is...it's Sigma Librae). The bibliography and indices are also helpful.
I learned that this book is also tons-o-fun for the science fiction buff, too. So, the space ninja chased the nasty asteroid pirates all the way to Phi Eridani, did they? Well, now you'll know that Phi Eridani is a B8 V, and 180 light years away.
Seriously, this book has been indispensable. It's fun to browse though for kicks, and it's extremely helpful if you're into Astronomy.
Book Description
Composite Materials is a modern reference book, tutorial in style, covering functions of composites relating to applications in electronic packaging, thermal management, smart structures and other timely technologies rarely covered in existing books on composites. It also treats materials with polymer, metal, cement, carbon and ceramics matrices, contrasting with others that emphasise polymer-matrix composites. This functional approach will be useful to both practitioners and students. A good selection of example problems, solutions and figures, together with a new and vibrant approach, provides a valuable reference source for all engineers working with composite materials.

Good, but dated.......2007-01-06
I found Berra's presentation to be solid and straightforward. However, as Berra himself noted, the scientific outlook changes to incorporate new evidence. Since the publication of this book, science has indeed marched onward. The Origins of Life section seems particularly dated, since it does not cover the "RNA World Theory" which is now widely accepted based on evidence of the last decade or two. Science has advanced in other ways as well, with more transitional fossils (Tiktaalik, for example) and plenty of molecular evidence, all of it compatible with and supporting the theories of evolution.
Meanwhile, even Creationism has evolved. Berra took on "Creation Science," the religion pretending to be science of the 1970s and 1980s. Since the 1987 supreme court decision of Edwards v. Aguillera, Creationism has been repackaged as "Intelligent Design." Basically, Intelligent Design leaves out the overtly Biblical bits such as a 6000 year old universe and the flod of Noah, and dresses up other bits in new clothing, such as Behe's "irreducible complexity" and Dembski's "complex specified information" numerology, which are both re-upholstered versions of Paley's watch. If you are looking for refutations of ID, you should find a newer book.
This is a fine book, and the outdated material is my only reason for downrating it.
OK high-school-level intro.......2006-09-06
The intent of this book is to present the facts and arguments in the debate about creationism versus evolution. It does a reasonably good job of introducing the basic arguments in this debate in a historical context, and then basically states the currently accepted theory of evolution. It also shows how the legal debate is focused on the political issue regarding public school curriculum.
This book is not an even-handed exploration of the debate (which would be hard to do in any case). Nor does it offer compelling arguments for either side.
A Good Basic Introduction to the Subject.......2006-07-07
Although now more than a decade and a half old "Evolution and the Myth of Creationism" by Ohio State University zoology professor Tim M. Berra is still a useful introduction to the basic facts of evolution. Written for a general audience, and at a level understandable to high schoolers, it presents a useful overview of the evolution/creationism dispute. Berra's goals are simple: to present the scientific case for evolution to the "open minded reader who does not understand the technical issues of evolution but would like to, who sees everywhere the signs of bitter philosophical and educational debate; but does not know what to make of it, or who to believe" (p. ix). With an emphasis on brevity, only 144 pages of text and some really excellent illustrations, Berra presents the scientific pursuit of the origins of humanity, in the process offering compact explanations of population genetics, the fossil record, case histories of bacteria drug resistance and sickle-cell anemia, the Big Bang and the evolution of the universe, and a very useful summary of current views on the human evolutionary experience.
Berra is an unrelenting evolutionist, insisting that from a scientific perspective there is no debate between evolution and creationism, or as it is called in its current incarnation "intelligent design." Evolution, he comments, has the self-correcting underpinning of the scientific method and is accepted by virtually all who seriously study the subject. Creationism is a faith statement not based on any scientific evidence whatsoever and not testable through the scientific method. Berra notes that only a tiny minority of the Americans accept the creationism argument, and that many with deeply-held religious conceptions find no conflict between science and religion. "Creationists, for the most part," he insists, "are fundamentalist Christians whose central premise is a literal interpretation of the Bible and a belief in its inerrancy" (p. viii). In spite of their small numbers creationists are vocal, domineering, and political savvy at getting their belief system into far too many science curricula. They have asserted, although it is a fundamentally flawed belief, that there is a scientific controversy and that both sides should be taught in science classes. Recently, U.S. President George W. Bush made this assertion; never mind that there is no legitimate controversy, a fact that any reader of this book will come to appreciate fully.
I read this book so that I could more readily answer questions about the origins of the universe and life in the universe in my capacity as a curator at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. We have received an increasing number of questions about intelligent design from visitors to the museum, and the scientific arguments for the "Big Bang," the expanding universe, and the possibilities of life beyond Earth have received sustained criticism from those who embrace intelligent design. While there is some information on this subject in "Evolution and the Myth of Creationism" the focus of this book is on natural history, the fossil record, dinosaurs, and human evolution. It is a useful introduction to this material, although a little outdated now, but for questions of cosmology readers will want to review other works such as "The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality" (2004) and "The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory" (2003), both by Brian Greene or "The Cosmic Landscape: String Theory and the Illusion of Intelligent Design" (2005) by Leonard Susskind.
Good Statement of The Facts and Exposing Creationism.......2006-03-21
I purchased this book two weeks ago. This is a very interesting book which outlines the scientific method step by step. The book also discounts the arguments presented by creationists. Dr. Berra's book is very insightful and shows the logical progression/evolution of all life on the planet earth.
Why is this belief accepted as logical?.......2006-01-27
If I were an evolutionist, I would be able to tell you is this book was any good, but I am not.(The only reason I rated this book is because Amazon wouldn't let me skip that step). I just wanted to inquire on why so many people can accept this belief that life so complex as the human race, and any other living being for that matter, could just happen because of one little cell having the desire to become something that could funtion as we do. The father of evolution himself said that the human eye was to complex to have evolved, and because of our eye's amazing capabilities to focus to light and colors and many other things, he said the theory of evolution was absurd, and he actually said absurd! If anybody can give me some logical reasons why I and many others should believe the theory of evolution, please post them.

Microcontinuum Field Theories I: Foundations and Solids
ASIN: 0387989692 |
Book Description
Microcontinuum Field Theories constitutes an extension of classical field theories - of elastic solids, viscous fluids, electromagnetism, and the like - to microscopic length and time scales. Material bodies are viewed as collections of a large number of deformable particles (sub-continua), suitable for modeling blood, porous media, polymers, liquid crystals, slurries, and composite materials. This volume extends and applies the ideas developed in the first volume, Microcontinuum Field Theories: Foundations and Solids, to liquid crystals, biological fluids, and other microstretch and micomorphic fluids. The theory makes it possible to discuss properties of such materials that are beyond the scope of classical field theories and may provide a basis for the resolution of some outstanding problems, such as turbulence.

Paranormal/Comedy: The last thing she needed was to be among the deceased on her 22nd wedding anniversary. Gwen Truax had the day perfectly scheduled. She was a key asset in her company's upcoming merger. And above all, she was going to ask for a divorce from her simpleton husband. Instead, she finds herself at the desk of the Archangel Michael, demanding for explanations or at least a reserved parking space on a cloud.

Don't miss this one!.......2000-07-22
This is one of the best stories I've read this year! The author has created a heroine you want to hate, but can't, because you experience the story right along with her, and can admire her grit and basic integrity. Witty, humorous, yet deeply touching. I'm looking forward to more work from this author.
Heaven Only Knows.......2000-07-06
Gwen Truax is a high-powered executive with an attitude. In her personal life this woman is cold, harsh and demanding. On the morning of her twentieth wedding anniversary she refuses to open a card from her husband, then gets into a fatal car accident with divorce papers stashed in her briefcase. Sent back to earth by the Archangel Michael, Gwen is to find a new wife for her widowed spouse. During this temporary stay she must live with an ordinary woman's identity in an ordinary body in an ordinary environment--not a pleasant experience for an extraordinary individual. Gwen recoils, but perseveres. She must work as a subordinate in the company where she was once in a position of control. Her coworkers are uneducated and repulsive, yet filled with essential traits Gwen lacks. From them she learns how to be a better person. Filled with humor, this lighthearted 31/2 star novel touches on serious moral issues without pulpit-pounding. Hamlett's witty dialogue and funny description will entertain the most jaded reader. Her background in screen writing adds to the effectiveness of her story.

Book Description
What would you think about an angel, Timeless Innocence, who came to the world through sin to save and had an impact on millions of lives? The angel was pure as one could bepurity never before seen. The angel was called to duty, as Christ was, not to save the world from sin, but was asked to take part in a great mission saving lives with the use of education and love helping to divert the devastating consequences of the AIDS epidemic during the late 1970s and 1980s. This was during a time when there was a sudden, explosive increase in this disease. This angel, earthly name Beth Mitchell, was to edify, teach purity, and love through her being with the employ of human interaction made by her lifelong friends, though she eventually suffers from this disease. The fateful interaction by the so-called Judas, Mike Kessell, Beth's boyfriend, in the story seems incongruously introduced in the turning point. As history has shown, Christ had no awareness of whom He was until later in life. Beth is not aware of her angelic purpose until reunited with her guardian angel Rose in heaven. She dies leaving an indelible impression in the county in which she lives, mirroring The Beth Mitchell Light of Hope Foundation founded by Mike Kessell, Gail Davis (best friend), and Mark Johnson, Jr. (friend).

Hevaen Only Knows It's the Best!.......2004-10-31
I just read the entire book. The book is quite interesting and I never found a dull moment with it. I could not honestly put it down for a minute. I loved the characters and their persons were so real and a live. The storyline made so much sense and offered a compelling insight into the world of never ending frienship, hope, and love from all four corners of the Heaven Only Knows: Death of Timeless Innocence cosmos. The story was rich in music that so many of us are familiar with from the late 1950's and 1980's. I found myslef crying, laughing, and enjoying the mood the author (Gary Beers) had set the story in. I would be pleased to recommend this book to any one person who may be a lover of surprise, mystery, and one of sound, applicable love never before displayed by any one human being who may be an angel near us. What I truly found interesting about this story is that, though fiction, it made me believe that someone close to me or at a distance could be a Beth Mitchell - This is the true work of a master at his best! You will not go wrong... Heaven Only Knows is the best!!!
