    Book Description

    "At last! A textbook on organizational behavior written for students of public administration and nonprofit management. The authors provide a comprehensive presentation of the major topics in organizational behavior from the perspective of life in public organizations. It is filled with useful learning instruments, exercises, cases, and realistic public sector examples that will provide students with a profound understanding of their own behavior and the behavior of others. This will surely enhance their careers in the public service."

    —Dr. Jay D. White, University of Nebraska at Omaha

    "This book is a valuable addition to the literature on public administration and management. It will serve as an excellent text for both current and aspiring public servants. It provides a creative interweaving of the theoretical and practical dimensions of public sector organizational behaviour. Especially notable is the combination of succinct summaries of theoretical material with cases, simulations and other techniques that will make organizational behaviour come alive in the classroom."

    -Kenneth Kernaghan, Brock University,

    Editor - International Review of Administrative Sciences,

    Co-author - Public Administration in Canada

    "This is the organization behavior textbook that public sector employers wish we would use in our MPA classes! Focusing on getting students to reflect on their current skill levels, it helps them build competency by combining a splendidly clear presentation of the best contemporary theory with a variety of engaging self-tests and activities. Students will enjoy this text because every chapter helps them build skills they can use right away. Professors will value it because they'll never again be asked, ‘What's the point of reading this?’"

    -Linda deLeon, University of Colorado at Denver

    "Managing Human Behavior in Public and Nonprofit Organizations is an intellectually superior and illuminating contribution to current literature on effective public management. Students, middle managers, and chief executive officers will all find its accumulated knowledge and practical suggestions both stimulating and beneficial."

    -Naomi B. Lynn, Chancellor Emeritus University of Illinois at Springfield

    Managing Human Behavior in Public and Nonprofit Organizations is the first core textbook specifically written for the management and organizational behavior course taught in undergraduate and graduate programs in public administration, particularly in Masters in Public Administration (MPA) programs. Designed to help students develop the skills and understanding they need in order to become effective and responsible public managers, the book covers all of the essential topics in management and organizational behavior from the perspective of public and non-profit management. It focuses on the importance of understanding the behavior, motivations, and actions of individuals in the public service and the distinctiveness of management and leadership in public organizations. Action-oriented, the book is filled with cases, self-assessment exercises, simulations, and evaluative instruments.

    4 out of 5 stars Focus on personal management strengths.......2007-05-10

    A novel approach to teaching management in the public and non-profit sectors. It follows the adage of "know thyself" in terms of getting work accomplished through others. Contains a number personal evaluations for application to the complex and difficult area of management. Nice addition to bringing to the classroom a practical approach to individual management preferences through personal discovery. Using this in an advanced human resource management class in a master's in public administration program. Less boring than a tradition textbook and useful for a practical approach to management and administration.

    2 out of 5 stars Frequently low on substance and supporting examples.......2007-01-14

    The chapters are not of consistent strength or substance. And then too, I came across a number of instances where statements were made without any attempt to support them with specific examples. I cannot offer specifics instances of the aforementioned because I have already discarted the book.

    This was required reading for a college course.

      Book Description

      "Touches on a dizzying array of subjects, including UV rays, inert gases, fossils, meteorites, microwaves, rainbows . . . Like many a good teacher, Berman uses humor to entertain his audience and liven things up." Los Angeles Times Bob Berman is motivated by a straightforward philosophy: everyone can understand science-and it's fun, too. In Strange Universe, he pokes into the bizarre and astonishingly true scientific facts that determine the world around us. Geared to the nonscientist, Berman's original essays are filled with the trademark wit and cleverness that has earned him acclaim over many years for his columns in Astronomy and Discover magazines. He emphasizes curiosities of the natural world to which everyone can relate, and dishes on the little-known secrets about space and some of science's biggest blunders (including a very embarrassing moment from Buzz Aldrin's trip to the moon). Fascinating to anyone interested in the wonders of our world and the cosmos beyond, Strange Universe will make you smile and think.

      5 out of 5 stars "Ther looked for dung and found gold.".......2006-08-07

      This is a delightful little book for anyone who likes reading about Science .Berman is a scientist but also writes for popular magazines;so he is very adept at simplifying the complicated so that virtually everyone can grasp an understanding of what he is writing about.He writes for Discover and Astronomy magazines,the Astronomy editor of the Old Farmer's Almanac,appeared on TV shows and written and written other books.
      He slips humor into his writings and catches the reader with a surprise when least expected.He tells us about two Astronomers at Bell Laboratories who discovered cosmic background radiation while using the radio telescope for an entirely different purpose. Berman asks,"Who would have imagined that the birth of the universe would have been discovered in New Jersey?" Then he goes on to say,"They looked for dung and found gold,which is just the opposite of the experience of most of us." I guess that just goes to show you that nerds like to see fun and humor,like the rest of us.
      I have a little dog and I often watch her ,especially when she sees something different.She never seems to wonder why anything is as it is or where it came from. We like to think we
      operate on a higher level than that,but when you see how most people wander through life,totally obilivous to the universe around them,you gotta wonder.
      Then again, some people don't see where anything is complicated.Like the two fellows having a beer on a hot day.The "thinking" one says to the other."I wonder why my beer gets warm?" His pal responds,"What's to wonder about?,you're not drinking it fast enough."
      So if you want to have the answer on many of the universe's great inponderables; like black holes,shooting stars,life on other planets,rainbows,why the moon looks flat,how big is the sun,or why things go wrong. Amaze your friends and become be an expert on Murphy's Law."Anything that can go wrong will go wrong".
      "Right this moment,somewhere on our spinning globe,people are experiencing food shortages,water shortages,and certainly money shortages,but there's never a shortage of goof-ups.Government,corporate,personal,minor to monumental,there may be only one way to do something right,but an almost infinite number of ways to mess things up.
      As an example Berman gives this gem;
      "Goof-ups in space science are usually costly,often spectacular,and always instructive. The archetypal U.S.foul-up was the Hubble Space Telescope fiasco in 1991.Its 94-inch mirror was the most precisely polished ever made--except that it was polished to the wrong shape".This was a billion dollar snafu!
      A great read,you might even learn something;then again,it might even scare you. One thing for sure,after reading this book,you'll never look at the moon or a rainbow the same way again;or for that matter--the Night Sky.

      4 out of 5 stars Go ahead, be astounded and make your day.......2005-10-16

      "The briefest inquiry into even ordinary substances can rivet the mind."

      A book that describes your entire morning in terms of science that, acc to the author, when you walk into the office and someone asks you "What's Happening", when you'd normally reply "Nothing Much", now you'd say, "Refraction, Reflection, Diffraction, Polarization, Bernoulli's Effect, Dopppler Shift, Electron Resonance, Pendulam effect on walkers...". And that's when you'd be cemented in to the Geek Hall of Fame.

      No seriously though, geek or not, this is a good book to read, simply to be astonished that science breathes and walks amongst us every second and yet beyond the pedantic chore we are obligated to go through in school, we are rarely aware of Nature's curiosities in our everyday moments.

      The book encourages you to find magic and mystery in commonplace things of not just our Earth, but the entire Universe, from shadows to water. For one small example, a building in North America is struck every fifteen months on average, by a small object from space - an asteroid rock or meteroid.

      5 out of 5 stars Inspiring work!.......2005-10-12

      As a lifetime amateur astronomer, I can appreciate the mastery an inspiring insights of this wonderful author. Written with wit and scientific accuracy, I recommend this book without reservations to the lay audience and professionals alike. Excellent job!

      2 out of 5 stars A new edition of previously published books........2005-03-23

      I read "Secrets of the Night Sky" and loved it. Then "Cosmic Adventure" was very good too, so I when I found this book I was thrilled... That is, until I read it.

      Bob Berman decided he could "improve" many of the articles of Cosmic Adventure and Secrets of the Night Sky by twisting the text a little, and maybe removing a few words. Usually, when an author wants to update a book, a second or third edition is published. Instead, Bob Berman took his other two books and changed the cover, to fool people into buying the same articles again.

      Below I compare the index of this book with articles in Cosmic Adventure. Some articles even have the same name:

      * Look Out Below! - Unwelcome Surprises, from Cosmic Adventure.
      * Physics in the Morning
      * We've Got Gas - It's a gas, from Cosmic Adventure.
      * The Man Who Fell to Earth
      * View from a Window Seat - View from a Window Seat, from Cosmic Adventure.
      * Fathoming Water - Everyday Alchemy, from Cosmic Adventure.
      * The Underworld
      * Odd Odds
      * Measuring Madness
      * Say What?
      * Eat the Aliens
      * Out of the Blue
      * Sky Spectacles
      * The Shadow Knows
      * Egg-quinox
      * Deadly Light
      * Nature and Numbers, Rivers and Pi
      * Now You See Us, Now You Don't
      * Oops - Cosmic Blunders, Cosmic Adventure.
      * The Discovery That Shook the World - The Most Astounding Discovery Ever, Cosmic Adventure.
      * The Forbidden Light
      * Our Nearest Neighbor
      * Voodoo Moon
      * Space Frolics - There are a couple of paragraphs coming from Strange Moon, Cosmic Wonders.
      * The Big Stink
      * Constellation Consternation
      * Cosmic Name Calling - Naming the Universe, from Cosmic Adventure.
      * BANG!!!
      * Travels in Spacetime
      * Light-Speed Magic
      * Black Holes: Twisted Space, Frozen Time
      * Going to Extremes - Going to Extremes, from Cosmic Adventure

      The comparison is not comprehensive. A friend has my copy of "Secrets of the Night Sky", but topics such as the ones in Voodoo Moon and the eclipses from Sky Spectacles appear on that book.

      This book was a complete let down. If this had been my first Bob's book, I might have given it four stars.

      There are a few original articles, but most of the content is recicled stuff. To top it all, this book (compared to "Secrets..." and "Cosmic...") lacks illustrations, it's the shortest one of the three, and - I can't stress this enough - it is the one with less original material.

        5 out of 5 stars A true masterpiece about extinction of Ice Age megafauna.......2003-10-11

        This book is not for the novice. However, it is an excellently organized and drafted presentation of 40 papers on the variously submitted causes for the extinction of many dominant and marvelous animals, from the end of the Ice Age to our own time. Since no formal records were kept on this decline, even though many vanishings occurred during the time of record-keeping people, the scientist is left to investigate and to hypothesize on the cause or causes of the extinctions. Recorded here are many of those investigations and their results. The diversity of opinion is an exciting testament, not only to the ingenuity of the investigators, but to the processes of science itself.

        Some investigations are restricted, both in terms of time, area, and species. Others are far broader, even global in scale. It would appear from a perusal of the articles that climate and consequent botanical change, or the coming of man into a successful hunter, were the primary cause(s) of the tragedy. But, as some contributors note, other causes may be relevant as well.

        Among the notorious RECENT extinctions discussed are the mammoth, less than 3,500 years ago, the Irish elk, in 500 A.D., or so, the moa of New Zealand, the Aepyornis, or elephant bird, and the giant lemur, both of Madagascar, within possibly the last 200 years. It seems germane that the islands, where man arrived only in the past 200 to 500 years, had the last megafauna to disappear, but, of course, the process goes on even in our own time, as witness the mountain gorilla, black rhinoceros, Javanese Tiger, Tasmanian Tiger, passenger pigeon, etc.

        As noted at the outset, some background in Ice Age paleontology is probably necessary for a full enjoyment of this book. If you haven't one, I suggest that you read "The Ice Age Animals of North America", by Ian Lange, and then read this book.

        The volume at hand is one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. I'd give it ten stars, if I could. As to persons who have some scientific background, my recommendation is off the scale.

        5 out of 5 stars Complete, well organized, easy to read........2002-01-11

        Being a French speaker, I didn't have any problem understand it and reading it. The subject is really well covered and written by many scientists. Many causes are explained.

        5 out of 5 stars The authoritative source for data and theories.......2001-12-05

        This is the best, most comprehensive treatment of available data (which has grown some) and theories (which have grown but not multiplied) on land vertebrate extinctions of the last 100,000 years. If you are a mammoth/sabertooth extinction hound, this book will feed you better than any other. It does require some specialized knowledge in a few chapters, but the gist is accessible for the educated layperson. It's worth hunting for or buying used.

        A more recent offering, though briefer, is "Extinctions in Near Time," Ross MacPhee, ed.

        I appreciate the candor in labeling two of the major sections, entitled 'the theoretical marketplace: geologic-climactic models' and 'the theoretical marketplace: cultural models' which encompass variations on each of the two main theories for the extinction.

        In addition to theories, the book describes the various mammals as well as their pattern of disappearance region by region worldwide. At 867 pages, it will keep you going for a while, but it's worth every page.

        There is only one chapter on birds, only passing references to a tortise, lizard, or fish, and nothing on plants. I would love to find similar treatments for changes in characteristic flora for the same time period.

        5 out of 5 stars Interested in extinctions?.......1999-03-19

        This is THE reference on Quaternary extinctions. The beauty of this book is that it isn't just one person's opinion, but a collection of well-researched articles on Quaternary topics by some of the top minds in the field. College students, especially in the biosciences and geography disciplines, BUY THIS BOOK AND KEEP IT HANDY!

            Book Description

            For the first time in a single book, Non-Linear Instabilities in Plasmas and Hydrodynamics presents the underlying physics of fast secondary instabilities. This exceptionally well-written, introductory book discusses the basic ideas of the physics of secondary or induced, nonlinear instabilities in wave-sustaining media. The authors, world-renowned experts in the field, have brought together the results of papers scattered throughout the literature to explain subjects as diverse as fluctuation chaos, wave-turbulent instabilities, vortex dynamos, beam-plasma interactions, plasma confinement, and the origins of typhoons in the Earth's atmosphere and magnetic fields in galaxies. Paving the way for new and exciting research in the future, this broad, interdisciplinary book enables a wide range of physicists to apply the concepts discussed to obtain new results in plasma physics, space physics, hydrodynamics, and geophysics.

            Many a time I have woken up in the morning, stepped into the closet and looked at a vast array of choices contained therein, but have never paused to consider the true source of those lovin' threads. Thanks to M. Moncrieff's wonderful book, I can now trace the origins of my nylon Run-DMC track suit back to the amazing chemists employed in America and Germany prior to the Second World War. This book is a must-have for anyone who refuses to shop chez Gap, Banana Republic, or J. Crew. And you know who you are, kiddies. After all, where better to know from whence we came than to get back to the source, so to speak, and fetch it? This book will take you there, believe me.
