This is THE BOOK!.......2007-04-27

Let me tell you, I recently checked out four books from the library that are specifically aimed at teachers (this book, Resumes and Cover Letters for Teachers, 101 Grade A Resumes for Teachers, and Real-Resumes for Teachers). If you want the ultimate book, this is it!

I was utterly amazed at the quality and uniqueness of the resumes included in this book. I cannot tell you how impressed I was with the various concepts that the authors have touched upon. This book is A-1, perfect for the 21st century teacher - regardless of where you are at in your career or what subject you teach (there is a specific section aimed directly to you and your situation). If you want to stand out from the crowd and get your resume pulled out of the stack of thousands then this book is the way to do it. Incidentally, if you're looking for an excellent secondary source check out Real-Resumes for Teachers (Real-Resumes Series) (Real-Resumes Series). It won't replace this book by a long shot, but it will give you some additional ideas.

The best resume book for teachers!!.......2003-11-19

I got this book along with several other resume books for teachers from the library. I thought this book was the best of all of them. It is filled with actual award-winning resumes by real teachers. The authors point out the special features and strengths of each resume. What I especially liked is that they focus on the visual style and formatting of a resume along with the content.

Using the examples and tips in this book, I re-formatted my resume to showcase my strengths and be easier to read. I had sent my old resume to someone in response to a teaching job he had, but I never heard from him. Still hoping to get in at this school district, I sent my new and improved resume to a different person, hoping she might have some openings instead. Well, she gave a copy of my new resume to the first person and he called me the same day for an interview!! I know it sounds like a cliche, but it really happened. My new resume got me in the door, and I got the job!! I highly recommend this book!

With Apollo as background, the book proceeds to look at the space shuttle, the technology being developed for its replacement, the International Space Station, and the possibilities for a manned Mars mission. The book concludes with an exploration of the far future, including Mars colonies and journeys to other stars.

An Interesting Viewpoint On Apollo.......2004-11-28

I have read most common (and many uncommon) books on the Apollo program. "Apollo in Perspective" is totally unique among all those books. The book is written with a historical perspective on the Apollo program that not only discusses the technology, missions, and hardware of Apollo, it also discusses the political underpinnings of Apollo as well. That is all relatively common, though; the thing that sets this book apart is that it also covers the physics of rockets, orbital mechanics, and trajectories in a comprehensible manner that most casual readers have not been exposed to. He also gives excellent summaries of the Apollo 1 fire and the Challenger accident, as well as observations on the shuttle, future planetary exploration, and John Glenn's shuttle ride.

The book is interesting for both aerospace professionals and newly interested readers as well. In the body of the book, for instance, he discusses the basic math behind Newton's laws and required thrust (which accompanies an especially well written section on staging) without resorting to extravagant mathematical proofs, however for the more avid reader he defines the calculus based proofs in the appendix. This writing technique makes the book an excellent choice for an intelligent non-expert to read as an introduction to the Apollo program.

I found this book to be quite accurate, and found his conclusions to be generally very sound. I don't universally agree with every opinion he shares in the concluding part of the book (he essentially contends, for instance, that John Glenn's shuttle flight was apolitical, an opinion I don't share, and in which he is definitely in a tiny minority), but I find his reasoning to be excellent overall. My one critique of the book would be that the last third or so of the book dwells on the shuttle, Mars missions, and other future programs (some of which are very far out.) I am sure that Mr. Allday would say that past is prologue, and that those programs form part of the perspective mentioned in his title. I don't dislike the information; I just found some of it less than germane to the Apollo program.

This is an excellent, accurate, and interesting book, which I highly recommend to any space enthusiast.

A very good read for space buffs.......1999-12-09

"Apollo in Perspective" is a very interesting and inspiring book. I was a star struck kid who avidly followed the space program, spent many happy hours running through simulated Apollo missions with my Saturn V/Apollo model, and watched the moon landing and walk as a 10 year old. This certainly contributed to my desire to eventually become a scientist. The author has a similar background, and it shows in this book - he does a good job of expressing the wonder and joy in the details that those of us who were kids then felt. It's a shame my own kids don't have anything like the moon program to fixate on.

As the title suggests, the Apollo program is covered superbly, with detailed chapters on all the major systems (rockets, command and service modules, and lunar module), and shorter discussions of things like space suits and the computers used on Gemini and Apollo. There is even a short chapter on "The Politics of Apollo".

There is more to this book than simply the Apollo program, however. The physics of how a rocket works and orbital mechanics are intuitively described, with equations presented at a high school algebra level. Calculus derivations of some of the more important equations are presented in an appendix. I've been hearing values quoted for specific impulse at conferences for years, and never had a clear physical understanding of what it meant until reading the author's discussion of it. Additional chapters describe the Space Shuttle, plans and dreams about Mars exploration, and a very down-to-earth discussion of the technology available and required for interstellar travel.

This book is very well researched. I was able to find only a small number of inconsequential errors. URLs are given for useful resources on the web. There is an interesting "Where are they now?" section that gives a short post-Apollo bio of the crews of Apollo 11-17. Good summaries of the Apollo 1 fire and the Challenger disaster are presented.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the space program.

The extreme high temperature stability and damage tolerance of materials and components required for space, terrestrial, energetic and many other applications can only be achieved by ceramic materials. All over the world research is going on to develop ceramics with quasiductile behaviour. The materials with the highest potential for high temperature applications are fibre reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CMC).
The international conference HT-CMC 4 in Munich will continue the tradition of its successful predecessor meetings held in Bordeaux (France, 1993), Santa Barbara (USA, 1995) and Osaka (Japan, 1998). This conference series has been recognized as the central meeting event in high temperature CMC science and technology and demonstrates the great interest in research and development on reinforced ceramics.

Most everyone loves a gifted storyteller. In The Pulpwood Annie Chronicles by Max Courson, it is obvious that a smart-aleck college guy believes that Pulpwood Annie, a delightful and very naughty prostitute, is also a gifted storyteller. He seems to be fascinated by the words of this shady but likeable character. Yes, he appears to try to avoid her whenever possible, but the saying "me thinks he doth protest too much" is apparent as proven by the way he misses her when she disappears for a time. Though he is not in any way sexually drawn to this unattractive and unsavory character, I am convinced that in some strange way, he cares.

The author explains how the smart-aleck guy who attends the University of Georgia would return home on weekends and then drive to nearby Zenobia. If not he would have been stuck in his "dry" hometown which offered no alcohol and very little in the way of entertainment. Most of the time he went to Bubba's bar where he enjoyed the beer of his choice and ended up being held verbally captive by the colorful Pulpwood Annie who insisted that he listen to her many adventures in regard to her "clients" as well as other aspects of her unsavory life. Though he ended up buying her beers, he never had any desire to pay the required $2.00 fee to partake of the sexual pleasures that she so willingly offered to him and most any man she met. Since the majority of her early customers had been guys driving trucks loaded with logs for the coastal pulpwood mills, this was probably how she had acquired her working name.

While sexually graphic at times, the author tells the stories tastefully and with a stylish flair of language skills that starkly contrast with the outlandish utterances of Pulpwood Annie who savors her owns words and demands complete and undivided attention from her college "friend." For some reason she is quite taken with him, even though he is crudely honest with his silly comments and not-so-humorous insults; however, he does it in such a way that she seem oblivious to everything except for his presence and the fact that he listens to her adventures, often questioning her about certain aspects of them. He gets a thorough education regarding the life of this prostitute, especially in regard to her sordid friends and incestuous family members. One problem he has is remembering--or having the opportunity--to inquire as to her last name.

I found Annie's stories to be funny, naughty, and so unbelievable that they almost had to be true because it would be too difficult to make them up. This means that the creative author did a great job in having Annie realistically relay them, just as he did in vividly describing the reactions of the college boy who was held captive by these verbal handcuffs.

Although I considered giving readers a condensed version of some of Annie's risqué adventures, I decided that this would degrade the extraordinary. Each chapter is a story in and of itself and just when readers think that there can't be anything more outlandish or farfetched, the author proves them wrong. If readers want to escape this world, smile a lot, and find themselves captivated by a not-so-attractive but loveable hooker, then consider The Pulpwood Annie Chronicles a MUST read. It is written by an award-winning author who is obviously very creative and talented. As a publisher of 16 years, I pride myself on the fact that I usually figure out how a book will end; however, I was not prepared in any way for this one. Afterward, I wondered why.

It was quite a bipolar experience to read about the discourses between Annie and the smart-alecky college guy. The author demonstrates a sophisticated vocabulary can indeed be applied to the most carnal pleasures. Funny and graphical, this book has a great ending. This is Max's first fiction.
