Here are answers to such critical questions as:

In answering these questions, the authors support their conclusions with numerous real-world examples that move the theory behind workplace technology into practice. The E-Business Workplace also provides insights and knowledge found nowhere else, based on the thousands of technology implementations in which they and their organizations have been integrally involved. Take this opportunity to learn about a critically important technology that may be the defining factor in determining success and failure in an increasingly complex Internet-enabled economy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Discover, Develop, and Then Leverage.......2001-04-11

In their extraordinarily informative Introduction, the authors explain that the contemporary workplace is "industry-specific, role-based, and personalized....What we mean by industry-specific is fairly obvious: information, applications, and services accessible through the workplace are relevant to an appropriate industry." as for "role-based and "personalized", they require a bit more definition which the authors then provide. They correctly assert that marketplaces "are becoming increasingly critical components of the e-business economy." They are "business hubs" on the Internet through which companies can buy, sell, or trade goods, services, and information with current business partners or with new customers or suppliers. In their fine book, the authors examine "the ramifications of workplaces for businesses of all kinds and provide insight into how most effectively to exploit their full potential to companies seeking success in the present and future e-business environment." The material is distributed within 12 chapters:

From Integration to Collaboration [a three-phase process]

People Matter: The Human Dimension [e.g. Every Individual Can Be a System Integrator]

Value Proposition for E-Business and Workplaces [e.g. Key E-Business Benefits]

The Workplace and Its Roles [e.g. Role Components]

A Day in the Life of a Workplace [i.e. the roles of CFO, Sales Manager, and Field Service Engineer]

Communities and Marketplaces [e.g. Marketplace Guiding Principles]

A Day in the Life of Community Marketplaces

Workplace Technology [e.g. Workplace Features]

From Change Management to Manageable Change [e.g. Knowledge Management]

Implementing a Workplace and Driving Business Value

E-Business and the Workplace: A Broad View

Getting to Where You Want to Be [e.g. Managing Expectations]

The reader is also provided with a Glossary and then an Appendix which explains how to use the CD-ROM provided ("mySAP Workplace -- The Enterprise Portal solution"). This is a cohesive and comprehensive book, well-written, and anchored in a wealth of real-world experience gained by the authors over many years in their respective positions within the PricewaterhouseCoopers and SAP organizations. They really know their stuff.

A brief commentary such as this simply cannot acknowledge many or even a few of the key expository passages in this book. Suffice to say that the authors thoroughly cover each of the subjects indicated by the chapter titles, in process explaining precisely HOW to discover, develop, and then leverage the power of enterprise portals. What is the critical difference between integration and collaboration? What should be the relationship between technology and those who use it? What impact can that relationship have? What is an appropriate value proposition for e-business and workplaces? These and other important questions are rigorously addressed. Were a higher rating available, I would give it to this book.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Valuing Diversity in the Workplace is Paramount for Managers.......2003-01-20

Overview of book.Katharine Esty wrote an effective text for companies and managers that are concerned with diversity issues in the workplace. It covers topics like "how to handle or treat" gender, race and age discriminatory modes of thinking, valuing the differences diversity can offer a company, how to profit from diversity and how to treat and to be aware of the backlash created by affirmative action campaigns and government laws.

Message to Managers. Katharine's message is that managers need to be open to(and make an effort to be aware of) the diversity issues and conflicts that may arise in an organization. That managers should value those differences for the benefit that "looking at things in a different way" brings to an organization. One benefit of diversity in the workforce is ensuring different modes of thinking. Different modes of thinking can lead to creative solutions to obtuse problems.

Diversity leads to creative solutions. It took a farmer that was fed up with burrs sticking to his socks and a scientist looking at the burr underneath a microscope to develop "velcro". It took a botched adhesive experiment and marketing genius to develop the glue that backs "Post-Its". Innovation and creativity can be born through the mingling of people with diverse backgrounds, educational, racial, ethnic, gender and age differences.

4 out of 5 stars. The book did not receive all 5 stars because it slightly lacked in two main areas. 1) It is advertised as a reference tool on the page preceding the introduction. Superior reference tools, at a minimum, come with a Table of Contents (which this book has), detailed topic description or searchable key words in the text and an detailed appendix that includes the page numbers of the topic description or key word phrase. Although this book is well-written, it lacks Q&A topic headings at the end of each chapter and lacks a detailed appendix that would provide the page numbers of keywords or phrases. This means that someone were to perform a search on what they should do about "a certain race of people arriving late to work" that they would have to thumb through, page by page, in the race chapter to find the answer. 2) Does not apply to all managers at all levels. Although the book should apply to all managers at all levels, it is focused to managers in larger corporations (20+ employees) that have more vertical management structures than say a typical start-up or small business.

Katharine points out the legal implications, business and contractual benefits of developing a diversity program or value system within a corporation, but the most (if not all) the legal implications apply to larger corporations and developing a diversity program implies that a business has the resources to dedicate someone or some other consulting company to developing such a program. This implies that the organization be larger than 20 people.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable resource tool.......2002-08-08

Workplace Diversity provides business managers with the creative and effective solutions they need to success in today's multifaceted and everchanging workplace. With insights into the most difficult and sensitive issues managers encounter, Workplace Diversity offers timely, practical, and invaluable guidance.

4 out of 5 stars New Thinking Model for Diversity.......2000-06-01

Esty has written a very readable book on a complex topic. The issues of diversity are broader than race and ethnicity although those issues remain important. A significant driver in business is the diversified workplace to reflect the diversified market. Esty presents new ways of thinking about and addressing diversity in the workplace in some very practical ways. A great handbook for anyone committed to diversity.

On Mars the sky is pink, the polar caps are made of dry ice, the volcanoes are 17 miles high, and there is a little rock named Lozenge. Paul Raeburn's new book about Mars is full of fun facts like these. Published by the National Geographic Society, this volume also features 125 striking photographs of the planet's surface, many of them from the 1997 Pathfinder mission. A pair of 3-D glasses are tucked into the cover so that the foldout "Marscape" in the middle of the book practically leaps off the page. Raeburn chronicles the history of humankind's fascination with Mars, presenting the theories of ancient astronomers and the fantasies spun by science fiction writers. When one 19th-century scientist thought he spotted canals on the surface of the planet, many people jumped to the conclusion that there was water on Mars and that there must be life on the planet. This hopeful idea flourished for many decades, until the first pictures from the Mariner expedition of 1965 revealed that the planet is arid and pocked with craters like Earth's own moon. The Viking and Pathfinder missions gathered more data about the planet, photographing its volcanoes and enormous canyons, offering glimmers of hope to the life-on-Mars contingent. Raeburn describes each Mars mission, profiles several of the major players in Mars research, and discusses future exploration of the planet. Raeburn's account of human exploration of the red planet is fascinating, but the pictures are the best thing about this book. Lozenge isn't much to look at, but that 17-mile-high volcano is, and so is the rest of the fourth planet's undulating, dusty terrain. --Jill Marquis

          Book Description

          MILLIONS OF MILES FROM HOME

Mars. The red planet. Unimaginably distant, and yet at the same time the most Earthlike of the planets, Mars has exerted a powerful pull on the human imagination for thousands of years. It mesmerized the millions who watched as the small robot known as Sojourner explored its faraway surface from July to September 1997.

Now, with a definitive book on this compelling subject, National Geographic presents a state-of the-art report on the planet itself, the technology that allows us to explore it, and the prospects for further exciting discoveries. Highlighted by an astonishing collection of more than 125 full-color photographs, MARS includes a stunning, 3-dimensional, 8-page panoramic gatefold with images that capture the genuine wonder of discovery at the Pathfinder landing site.

With an authoritative text by Paul Raeburn, an award-winning science journalist, and a foreword and insightful commentary by Matt Golombek, chief scientist on the hugely successful Pathfinder mission, MARS traces the long history of our fascination with the red planet, explains the current state of Mars exploration, and interprets the amazing images transmitted across the vastness of space in clear, easy-to-understand language.

As we look to a future when humans might actually explore the highest mountains and deepest valley of the solar system, this remarkable book is a dramatic, visually arresting chronicle of centuries of curiosity, decades of technical accomplishment, and the promise of years to come.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars A great reference book........2007-01-02

Mars: Uncovering the Secrets of the Red Planet, by Paul Raeburn and introduction and commentary by Mars Pathfinder project scientist Matt Golombek, is a book filled with a massive amount of detailed information. Occasionally, the information was overwhelming. Although the author did an excellent job at mixing the more technical information with lighter information and absolutely amazing photos, the book was still confusing at times.
The book begins by introducing some of the famous astronomers of history. It addresses what Galileo, Copernicus, Kepler, Aristarchus, and Ptolemy believed about Mars. The book also has pictures illustrating what mankind has thought of Mars and Martians from a stereotypical view. Later the author focuses on the time during which Russia and America raced to make their space program the best in the world. You may or may not be familiar with this period in history (this information is covered in the book) but the competition was fierce. The writer focuses on the attempts to launch probes into space, the monetary issues that arose, and the problems each side faced in their quest to eventually land on the moon. Raeburn then discusses the American Mariner, Viking and Pathfinder missions to Mars. He describes the details of the launches, the successes, the failures, and the purposes of the missions. He then explains the interest in going to Mars, the debate over life on Mars, and gives information about the similarities between Earth, and the red planet.
I felt this book was a challenging read. It was informative and had many quotes from famous scientists such as Dr. Robert Manning and Dr. McKay. The photographs in this book were fantastic; they were detailed and visually impressive. This was the most informative book about Mars I have ever read by a long shot, and although I wouldn't recommend it for light reading, it is an excellent reference book. I feel an adult would appreciate the book more than I did.

5 out of 5 stars Mars by Raeburn.......2003-10-19

This work has spectacular pictures of the Martian surface
developed from recent expeditions. The shots of the Valles
Marineris are panoramic as is the Orphir plateau surface.
The planet has a heavily cratered terrain with many
photo shots of the Southern Polar Cap consisting of water and
CO 2. This book would be a treasure chest for a school class
project in science. It is highly recommended for a young
audience or for curious elders and other red planet enthusiasts. The detailed descriptions of the planet add
significantly to the overall presentation. The book is a
worthy addition to any science library.

          3 out of 5 stars In Limbo..........2001-11-06

This book can't decide if it is a coffee table picture book or something more serious and suffers as a consequence as it is not particularly good at either. I suppose it might be a nice, very non-technical introduction to the study of Mars for the very non-technical. If you are looking for a nice picture book (which I was) I think you'll find this falls a little short. I was hoping for something analagous to the NGS book, Orbit, and I did not get it.

5 out of 5 stars OUT OF THIS WORLD.......2001-09-07

AN EXCELLENT COLLECTION OF PHOTOS AND INFO. THIS BOOK IS AWESOME FOR THE PERSON WHO LOVES SCIENCE AND SPACE. HISTORY, FACTS, OPINIONS AND A WHOLE LOT MORE MAKE THIS BOOK A WINNER. WELL WORTH OWNING FOR YEARS TO COME.
          A MUST FOR SPACE BUFFS.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to our cold and dry neighbor.......2001-08-18

This outstanding book is published by National Geographic and it shows! Enough colorful pictures to qualify as a coffee table book but plenty of interesting text to work through as well. The book is written for the "educated layman", not too technical but at the same time assuming a basic understanding of science. The ratio of text to pictures is similar to the National Geographic magazine, perhaps a bit heavier on the text.

Raeburn begins with a summary of the different beliefs held about Mars before the spacecraft era, including the widely held one initiated by Lowell about canals constructed by intelligent Martians. Raeburn spends the bulk of the book taking us through NASA's various missions to Mars: Mariner, Viking, Pathfinder, and Global Surveyor. The book was published in 1998 and hence only provides a "preview" of the Global Surveyor findings. Today, of course, we have a complete global map of Mars in astonishing detail.

Also, Raeburn optimistically looks forward to NASA's continuing "faster, cheaper, better" program of Mars exploration. We already know that the orbiter and polar lander failed, so let's hope that the craft to be launched this year fare better. Raeburn also notes that in 2005 a craft will be launched that should bring rocks from Mars back to Earth!

Overall, definitely worth the price of entry for the pictures alone. There are even some neat 3-D pictures inside and the book provides 3-D glasses!

                  Book Description

Provides the basic background needed by engineers to determine experimentally and interpret the rheological behavior of polymer melts--including not only traditional pure melts but also solutions and compounds containing anisotropic (fiber or disc) or colloidal particles--and apply it to analyze flow in processing operations. Experimental foundations of modern rheology and rheo-optics and the interpretation of experimental data are covered, which also develops the fundamentals of continuum mechanics and shows how it may be applied to devise methods for measurement of rheological properties, formulation of three-dimensional stress-deformation relationships, and analysis of flow in processing operations. Also discusses the structure of polymers and considers rheological behavior in terms of structure. Constitutive equations relating stress to deformation history in non-Newtonian fluids and their applications are discussed. Each chapter presents an overview of the subject matter and then develops the material in a pedagogical manner.

From the author: In this work, the linear viscoelastic behavior of PP/PS and PP/HDPE blends modified with SEBS and EPDM, respectively, was studied. Small amplitude oscillatory shear measurements were carried out at different temperatures, ranging from 190[degrees]C to 240[degrees]C. The storage (G') and loss (G") moduli curves obtained were horizontally shifted and curves of angle delta ([delta]) ([delta] = atan (G"/G')) as a function of complex shear modulus ([G.sup.*]), known as van Gurp plots, were obtained at several temperatures, to test the applicability of time-temperature superposition principle (TTS) to these blends. The results showed that successful application of TTS depends on the flow energy of activation and horizontal shift factors of the individual components of the blend, on the interfacial properties of the blend and on the concentration of compatibilizer added to the blend. TTS application failed for PP/PS blend, but held for PP/HDPE blend. Addition of SEBS to PP/PS blends promoted successful TTS applicati on at specific concentrations that corresponded to interfacial saturation of the dispersed phase. Addition of EPDM did not imply sensitive change on TTS application for the PP/HDPE blends.

                    3 out of 5 stars A speculative introduction.......2007-01-17

This is an introduction into investigating the "Neanderthal". The prologue is a speculative story of the final days of the last family. Their appearance as presented is complete conjecture. The book contains a selection of fossils, tools and jewelry photos with detailed descriptions of each. Tattersall lists a few apologetic references for further reading. Obviously a fascinating subject, but fleeting, why?

Were they oddities in the rise to humans? Were they just old men as the bible tells us, or possibly early humans with rickets?--please check out the book "Buried Alive". They had the same brain capacity as us. He donates a brief chapter on evolution; this could have been left out, instead Ian should have focused on the hard science of the so called "Neanderthal" man. The chapter on "Before the Neanderthals" is very much in doubt and some has been proven false, such as: Australopithecus, "Java Man", and "Peking Man". A lot of soft science; light weight, even for evolutionists.

                    Wish you well
                    Scott

5 out of 5 stars Superb Illustrations, Clear Concepts, Outstanding Text.......2003-12-13

I'm not a reader who usually pays too much attention to photos and illustrations, but I could recommend "The Last Neanderthal" on that basis alone. There are nearly 150 of them in this 200-page book, some covering an entire page in my oversized edition. Almost all of them are superb. The illustrations are mostly of various fossilized bones and reconstructions. They are not haphazardly thrown throughout the book or tightly grouped in the middle, but introduced when appropriate for the text.

Ian Tattersall's set-up of what is known about Neanderthals is masterful. Most of the first third of the book is about evolution, how fossilization works, and a brief description about what is known of the precursors to both Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens. Tattersall is clearly at home with this material and confident in his presentation of it. He takes his time in this area - even though it has little to directly do with the topic of his book - because one cannot understand Neanderthals unless one has some understanding of other pre-modern humans and the scientific techniques used to understand them.

The set-up is not wasted on a flat ending. When Tattersall finally gets to the Neanderthals, he maintains a high level of interest for the reader by first showing how the scholarly views on Neanderthals have changed so much over the last hundred-fifty years (much more fascinating than it sounds) and then by moving into areas about its evolution and what is known about its lifestyle. He appears to be a fair partisan, pointing out evidence both for and against different sides of the numerous controversial topics on Neanderthals.

4 out of 5 stars great intro to current thoughts on neanderthals.......2003-12-09

This book was my entry into current theory on neanderthal man and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very well written, it covered most if not all of my basic questions. The author's biases are clear yet he is seemingly forthwright about opposing views. The language he uses betrays the complexities of conjecture and theory behind many finds, rather than simply laying things out as 'fact'. Many excellent photographs, paintings, etc...

5 out of 5 stars the last neanderthal.......2002-11-19

Tattersall's book is a must have. It covers all the basics in a compelling style and with particular focus on site locations. The photos and illustrations are as good as those of any "coffee table" book. It is too light on some particular aspects concerning extinction, e.g. hybridization, pelvic ring size, birth/death ratios, and exotic disease resistance, but is superior in descriptions of Neanderthal morphology and environment.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Illustrations!.......2002-04-08

The Last Neanderthal is a wonderfully illustrated book perfect for anyone interested in human evolution. While providing an excellent overview of human evolution and the history of the discovery and study of Neanderthals, this book's true merit lies in its photographs of all the major finds of both Neanderthals and other human ancestors. Great as a reference for someone wishing to begin a more in-depth study of Neanderthals for class or just for fun.
