The reader is also provided with a Glossary and then an Appendix which explains how to use the CD-ROM provided ("mySAP Workplace -- The Enterprise Portal solution"). This is a cohesive and comprehensive book, well-written, and anchored in a wealth of real-world experience gained by the authors over many years in their respective positions within the PricewaterhouseCoopers and SAP organizations. They really know their stuff.
A brief commentary such as this simply cannot acknowledge many or even a few of the key expository passages in this book. Suffice to say that the authors thoroughly cover each of the subjects indicated by the chapter titles, in process explaining precisely HOW to discover, develop, and then leverage the power of enterprise portals. What is the critical difference between integration and collaboration? What should be the relationship between technology and those who use it? What impact can that relationship have? What is an appropriate value proposition for e-business and workplaces? These and other important questions are rigorously addressed. Were a higher rating available, I would give it to this book.

Workplace Diversity: A Manager's Guide to Solving Problems and Turning Diversity into a Competitive Advantage

Valuing Diversity in the Workplace is Paramount for Managers.......2003-01-20
Message to Managers. Katharine's message is that managers need to be open to(and make an effort to be aware of) the diversity issues and conflicts that may arise in an organization. That managers should value those differences for the benefit that "looking at things in a different way" brings to an organization. One benefit of diversity in the workforce is ensuring different modes of thinking. Different modes of thinking can lead to creative solutions to obtuse problems.
Diversity leads to creative solutions. It took a farmer that was fed up with burrs sticking to his socks and a scientist looking at the burr underneath a microscope to develop "velcro". It took a botched adhesive experiment and marketing genius to develop the glue that backs "Post-Its". Innovation and creativity can be born through the mingling of people with diverse backgrounds, educational, racial, ethnic, gender and age differences.
4 out of 5 stars. The book did not receive all 5 stars because it slightly lacked in two main areas. 1) It is advertised as a reference tool on the page preceding the introduction. Superior reference tools, at a minimum, come with a Table of Contents (which this book has), detailed topic description or searchable key words in the text and an detailed appendix that includes the page numbers of the topic description or key word phrase. Although this book is well-written, it lacks Q&A topic headings at the end of each chapter and lacks a detailed appendix that would provide the page numbers of keywords or phrases. This means that someone were to perform a search on what they should do about "a certain race of people arriving late to work" that they would have to thumb through, page by page, in the race chapter to find the answer. 2) Does not apply to all managers at all levels. Although the book should apply to all managers at all levels, it is focused to managers in larger corporations (20+ employees) that have more vertical management structures than say a typical start-up or small business.
Katharine points out the legal implications, business and contractual benefits of developing a diversity program or value system within a corporation, but the most (if not all) the legal implications apply to larger corporations and developing a diversity program implies that a business has the resources to dedicate someone or some other consulting company to developing such a program. This implies that the organization be larger than 20 people.

Mars: Uncovering the Secrets of the Red Planet (National Geographic)
Paul Raeburn Manufacturer: National Geographic ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0792273737 Release Date: 1998-08-01 |

On Mars the sky is pink, the polar caps are made of dry ice, the volcanoes are 17 miles high, and there is a little rock named Lozenge. Paul Raeburn's new book about Mars is full of fun facts like these. Published by the National Geographic Society, this volume also features 125 striking photographs of the planet's surface, many of them from the 1997 Pathfinder mission. A pair of 3-D glasses are tucked into the cover so that the foldout "Marscape" in the middle of the book practically leaps off the page. Raeburn chronicles the history of humankind's fascination with Mars, presenting the theories of ancient astronomers and the fantasies spun by science fiction writers. When one 19th-century scientist thought he spotted canals on the surface of the planet, many people jumped to the conclusion that there was water on Mars and that there must be life on the planet. This hopeful idea flourished for many decades, until the first pictures from the Mariner expedition of 1965 revealed that the planet is arid and pocked with craters like Earth's own moon. The Viking and Pathfinder missions gathered more data about the planet, photographing its volcanoes and enormous canyons, offering glimmers of hope to the life-on-Mars contingent. Raeburn describes each Mars mission, profiles several of the major players in Mars research, and discusses future exploration of the planet. Raeburn's account of human exploration of the red planet is fascinating, but the pictures are the best thing about this book. Lozenge isn't much to look at, but that 17-mile-high volcano is, and so is the rest of the fourth planet's undulating, dusty terrain. --Jill MarquisBook Description
MILLIONS OF MILES FROM HOME
Mars. The red planet. Unimaginably distant, and yet at the same time the most Earthlike of the planets, Mars has exerted a powerful pull on the human imagination for thousands of years. It mesmerized the millions who watched as the small robot known as Sojourner explored its faraway surface from July to September 1997.
Now, with a definitive book on this compelling subject, National Geographic presents a state-of the-art report on the planet itself, the technology that allows us to explore it, and the prospects for further exciting discoveries. Highlighted by an astonishing collection of more than 125 full-color photographs, MARS includes a stunning, 3-dimensional, 8-page panoramic gatefold with images that capture the genuine wonder of discovery at the Pathfinder landing site.
With an authoritative text by Paul Raeburn, an award-winning science journalist, and a foreword and insightful commentary by Matt Golombek, chief scientist on the hugely successful Pathfinder mission, MARS traces the long history of our fascination with the red planet, explains the current state of Mars exploration, and interprets the amazing images transmitted across the vastness of space in clear, easy-to-understand language.
As we look to a future when humans might actually explore the highest mountains and deepest valley of the solar system, this remarkable book is a dramatic, visually arresting chronicle of centuries of curiosity, decades of technical accomplishment, and the promise of years to come.

Wonderful introduction to our cold and dry neighbor.......2001-08-18
Raeburn begins with a summary of the different beliefs held about Mars before the spacecraft era, including the widely held one initiated by Lowell about canals constructed by intelligent Martians. Raeburn spends the bulk of the book taking us through NASA's various missions to Mars: Mariner, Viking, Pathfinder, and Global Surveyor. The book was published in 1998 and hence only provides a "preview" of the Global Surveyor findings. Today, of course, we have a complete global map of Mars in astonishing detail.
Also, Raeburn optimistically looks forward to NASA's continuing "faster, cheaper, better" program of Mars exploration. We already know that the orbiter and polar lander failed, so let's hope that the craft to be launched this year fare better. Raeburn also notes that in 2005 a craft will be launched that should bring rocks from Mars back to Earth!
Overall, definitely worth the price of entry for the pictures alone. There are even some neat 3-D pictures inside and the book provides 3-D glasses!

Principles of Polymer Engineering Rheology
James Lindsay White Manufacturer: Wiley-Interscience ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0471853623 |
Book Description
Provides the basic background needed by engineers to determine experimentally and interpret the rheological behavior of polymer melts--including not only traditional pure melts but also solutions and compounds containing anisotropic (fiber or disc) or colloidal particles--and apply it to analyze flow in processing operations. Experimental foundations of modern rheology and rheo-optics and the interpretation of experimental data are covered, which also develops the fundamentals of continuum mechanics and shows how it may be applied to devise methods for measurement of rheological properties, formulation of three-dimensional stress-deformation relationships, and analysis of flow in processing operations. Also discusses the structure of polymers and considers rheological behavior in terms of structure. Constitutive equations relating stress to deformation history in non-Newtonian fluids and their applications are discussed. Each chapter presents an overview of the subject matter and then develops the material in a pedagogical manner.

The Last Neanderthal : The Rise, Success, and Mysterious Extinction of Our Closest Human Relatives

Customer Reviews:
A speculative introduction.......2007-01-17
Superb Illustrations, Clear Concepts, Outstanding Text.......2003-12-13
Ian Tattersall's set-up of what is known about Neanderthals is masterful. Most of the first third of the book is about evolution, how fossilization works, and a brief description about what is known of the precursors to both Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens. Tattersall is clearly at home with this material and confident in his presentation of it. He takes his time in this area - even though it has little to directly do with the topic of his book - because one cannot understand Neanderthals unless one has some understanding of other pre-modern humans and the scientific techniques used to understand them.
The set-up is not wasted on a flat ending. When Tattersall finally gets to the Neanderthals, he maintains a high level of interest for the reader by first showing how the scholarly views on Neanderthals have changed so much over the last hundred-fifty years (much more fascinating than it sounds) and then by moving into areas about its evolution and what is known about its lifestyle. He appears to be a fair partisan, pointing out evidence both for and against different sides of the numerous controversial topics on Neanderthals.
