5 out of 5 stars KISS: May I have this dance?.......2006-02-25

Setting the stage: As a senior Information Technology professional with 12+ years of hard-core software development experience, I haven't had to `interview' in the traditional sense since fresh out of college and I couldn't understand why I wasn't getting to the second interview stage - or even know that there was a second stage.

This book gets your mind in the state of successfully EARNING your next job - not passively hoping something or someone will GIVE you a job.

After reading this book the percentage of phone screens that turned into face to face interviews, the number of face to face interviews that turned into second interviews has increased tremendously and I'm VERY happy with the contents and messages contained in this book.

Like all the Interview books out there, this book also describes the following:
    1) How to fix your resume & cover letter to be more focused, i.e., put your resume on a diet.
    2) How to find and jobs and submit, what to do afterwards and good common practices.

    But most importantly,
    3) Practice tough interview questions and learn how to turn negatives into positives.

What I like most about this book is that it is a quick read and fun - not weighted down with too much detail. (KISS - Keep it simple stupid. But, understand the process)

Interviewing is a dance. You must know what to ware, how to ask your partner for the dance, how to dance, and how to thank them afterwards. After all - everyone in the room is watching. But don't be nervous! If you have made it to the face to face interview, then they like you enough to invite you to the prom. So shine your shoes, practice your dance, and smile!

After you read this book, get on-line and find websites that have more practice questions and answers that dive deep into your core competencies. This book, like any paper printed material, is fairly generic with respect to particular industries and some of the questions are dated - you'll have to find more examples of deeper core questions, i.e., Management, Technology, Finance etc. Try typical job posting sites like Monster. (See worldwideweb dot cpgjoblist.com/html/sample_questions.php)

However, for around $10, this book it is a must have. Think of it as your own private dancing partner/tutor.

    Cheers,
    Sasha

5 out of 5 stars Helpful and easy reading.......2006-02-24

I found the general-purpose book concise and easy to read. It is well written and divided into relavent chapters with tips, question/answers scenarios, checklists. The book may seem simple but job hunting should not be a rocket science. It helps you get the important and basic things done correctly, and then your natural talent and personality should carry you the rest of the way.
It is VERY helpful specially when you are in the high-stress period of interviewing. Good chapters on preparing for the interviews and then following up.
Ive looked through many books and found this one to be the best if you are only looking for one book. If you have been job-hunting for over a year, you should find a specialized book relavent to your field of expertise, or consider changing your career.
I give this book partial credit for helping me find my current job!
I used the 2001 edition to find a job in 2006. I was offered the job within a week.

    5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2005-03-12

I went on a cruise and took this book with me, knowing that I had an interview two days after I returned home. Where I work, we use an interview panel and it's a very intimidating. I studied the entire book while I was gone, and felt prepared when I returned home.

While I was in the "hot seat," the questions triggered responses suggested in the book that I wouldn't have thought of on my own. I walked out of the interview feeling that I had nailed it, unlike previous interviews for various positions within the company. I was offered the job the next day.

Four of my friends read the book and also have new jobs. The book really puts you in the right frame of mind to answer questions that might surprise you and leave you fumbling for the right words. The book is easy to read, but more importantly, it makes you think of how you would respond ahead of time.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2004-01-11

This is a great book for somebody who is looking for the first job. It mentions every detail about things that we should prepare for the first interview, and the questions that will be asked.

2 out of 5 stars Too simple to be taken seriously.......2002-05-01

To begin with, I must say that this book took too long to get to the meat and potatoes of the interview...the interview questions and possible responses to these questions. It drags the reader through over 100 pages of meaningless common sense issues that any high school student already knows based on the experiences they have had with their first job. Some examples of dribble...I'm sorry, words of wisdom... from these initial pages include 10 Ways to Win an Interview: 1. Be Prepared, 2. Dress Appropriately, 3. Be Confident, 4. Make Eye Contact, 5. Show Your Enthusiasm, 6. Know the Position, 7. Know the Industry, 8. Know the Company, 9. Practice, 10. Follow Up; and 10 Ways Not to Win an Interview: 1. Arrive Late, 2. Appear Bored, 3. Forget to Do Your Research, 4. Speak in a Long-winded Manner, 5. Speak in Too Brief a Manner, 6. Speak in a Negative Manner, 7. Talk about Money, 8. Appear Conceited, 9. Share Unrealistic Goals, 10. Appear Unkempt. "Wow thanks Mr. Wizard is there anything else I should know?" What kind of horse sense dribble is that? Do I need a book to tell me this? It is the readers life that is being robbed by wasting a single second reading this garbage.

The final section of the book, does pick up the slack a little bit by delving deeper into the interview questions and actually sounds intelligent when asking and answering the questions...at least when answering in the affirmative. The questions are answered with sample examples of how you should and should not respond and a general explanation of the question. As I mentioned, the affirmative answers are good and the description of the questions are good, but the negative answer are down right embarrassing due to the fact that they are so ridiculous. Here is one of my favorites: "If you were allowed to run the company, what would you do differently?" Recommended answer: "I might investigate whether to sell off the light-manufacturing business and start an aggressive supplier-relations program." Non-recommended answer: "I would make the company more like a school. We would have a three-month summer vacation and catered lunch every day. I would make Friday game day where - instead of working - everyone would be allowed to play games within their department." Wow! Thanks for telling me I shouldn't say that, cause that was on my list of possible responses! What kind of response is that? A response that belongs in a joke book. And that is not any exaggeration either. It's on pg. 181 if you want to look it up. And that is a very common set of responses for all of the questions in the book, the affirmative answer is smart and the negative answer is stupid and flippant.

I give this two stars on not one, because the positive answers to the interview questions had valuable advice offered in them and the explanations behind the questions were solidly stated. But I strongly advise not throwing money away to buy this book. Go to the library and check it out if you must read it; that's what I did and am sleeping pretty well at night because of it.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful and Informative.......2007-09-18

I found this text to be a great resource throughout the interview process. The subject matter flows well and makes it easy to read and use as a resource. Not only does the book cover phone interviews, behavioral and situational sample questions, it also gives you an easy to follow protocol on how to follow up after the interview and what to expect.

Definitely a valuable resource for anyone who has not interviewed recently.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Refresher.......2007-01-15

Having not been in the interview process for some time, I found this book very informative and a great tool for giving interviews as well. I highly recommend this book especially if you think you interview well. It's a great insight on the evaluation of your responses.

          Book Description

This volume investigates the paradigm changes which occurred in ethics during the early modern era (1350-1600). While many general claims have been made regarding the nature of moral philosophy in the period of transition from medieval to modern thought, the rich variety of extant texts has seldom been studied and discussed in detail. The present collection attempts to do this. It provides new research on ethics in the context of Late Scholasticism, Neo-Scholasticism, Renaissance Humanism and the Reformation. It traces the fate of Aristotelianism and of Stoicism, explores specific topics such as probabilism and casuistry, and highlights the connections between Protestant theology and early modern ethics. The book also examines how the origins of human rights, as well as different views of moral agency, the will and the emotions, came into focus on the eve of modernity.

Target audience: students of medieval, Renaissance and Reformation history; students of the history of philosophy, ethics and theology; those interested in humanism, human rights and the history of law.

                    Book Description

Ever since Darwin, animal behavior has intrigued and perplexed human observers. The elaborate mating rituals, lavish decorative displays, complex songs, calls, dances and many other forms of animal signaling raise fascinating questions. To what degree can animals communicate within their own species and even between species? What evolutionary purpose do such communications serve? Perhaps most importantly, what can animal signaling tell us about our own non-verbal forms of communication? In The Handicap Principle, Amotz and Ashivag Zahavi offer a unifying theory that brilliantly explains many previously baffling aspects of animal signaling and holds up a mirror in which ordinary human behaviors take on surprising new significance. The wide-ranging implications of the Zahavis' new theory make it arguably the most important advance in animal behavior in decades. Based on 20 years of painstaking observation, the Handicap Principle illuminates an astonishing variety of signaling behaviors in animals ranging from ants and ameba to peacocks and gazelles. Essentially, the theory asserts that for animal signals to be effective they must be reliable, and to be reliable they must impose a cost, or handicap, on the signaler. When a gazelle sights a wolf, for instance, and jumps high into the air several times before fleeing, it is signaling, in a reliable way, that it is in tip-top condition, easily able to outrun the wolf. (A human parallel occurs in children's games of tag, where faster children will often taunt their pursuer before running). By momentarily handicapping itself--expending precious time and energy in this display--the gazelle underscores the truthfulness of its signal. Such signaling, the authors suggest, serves the interests of both predator and prey, sparing each the exhaustion of a pointless chase. Similarly, the enormous cost a peacock incurs by carrying its elaborate and weighty tail-feathers, which interfere with food gathering, reliably communicates its value as a mate able to provide for its offspring. Perhaps the book's most important application of the Handicap Principle is to the evolutionary enigma of animal altruism. The authors convincingly demonstrate that when an animal acts altruistically, it handicaps itself--assumes a risk or endures a sacrifice--not primarily to benefit its kin or social group but to increase its own prestige within the group and thus signal its status as a partner or rival. Finally, the Zahavis' show how many forms of non-verbal communication among humans can also be explained by the Handicap Principle. Indeed, the authors suggest that non-verbal signals--tones of voice, facial expressions, body postures--are quite often more reliable indicators of our intentions than is language. Elegantly written, exhaustively researched, and consistently enlivened by equal measures of insight and example, The Handicap Principle illuminates virtually every kind of animal communication. It not only allows us to hear what animals are saying to each other--and to understand why they are saying it--but also to see the enormously important role non-verbal behavior plays in human communication.

5 out of 5 stars The full explanatory power of this book is unlikely to be accepted any time soon.......2007-02-11

In The Handicap Principle, the Zahavis have created a compelling case for a seemingly paradoxical revelation: Strength may only be demonstrated by showing vulnerability.

The simplest distillation of its central tenets is that interspecies or intraspecies communication must be costly in order to be meaningful. While it would be useful for any animal to be able to view another's cardiovascular health, the body provides few outright signals of its internal function ... or does it? Amazingly, many seemingly useless appendages like peacock's tails do precisely that. If a peacock can grow a perfectly symmetrical, useless tail, chances are it's in good physical health otherwise.

When we pause to try to determine which traits are considered beautiful, the likely candidates are those with no obvious survival value (long lustrous hair, unblemished skin, clear eyes, perfect teeth, symmetry, and artfully placed fat deposits). All of these traits are also the ones most vulnerable to parasites, and the first to fade in the event of poor health or old age. These are the last places an animal will put its nutritional resources if it was worried only about its daily survival. It is their very wastefulness that shows their value. While no one literally wears their hearts on their sleeves, our dermis is a fairly good proxy of our overall health. This is precisely because of its exceptional vulnerability.

Indeed, any time a scientist wants to test material properties, he or she usually has to break the sample that is being tested. It is only by showing vulnerability that true (breaking) strength can be gauged.

Thorstein Veblen's The Theory of the Leisure Class, published in 1899, and Nancy Etcoff's Survival of the Prettiest both form interesting companion pieces to this work. The Zahavis demonstrate that Veblen's concept of conspicuous consumption applies to the animal kingdom as well.

Just like The Origin of Species or The Selfish Gene, the Handicap principle is a theory that has yet to be proven. From a scientific perspective, however, a theory is far more than a guess. Theories can be judged primarily for their explanatory power, and all of these works provide considerable ammunition. While The Handicap Principle is by no means proven, it provides an amazing lens through which to view the world. You'll never look at animals (or yourself) the same way again.

                    5 out of 5 stars Truly Fabulous!.......2003-07-15

I thought that the Zehavis' research and book was outstanding.
I feel this book and their theory is a must for any comprehensive review of the literature on altruism.

                    2 out of 5 stars Interesting research.......2001-12-15

One problem with this book is that it refutes other forms of cooperative altruism such as reciprocal altruism instead of combining them with the theory and expanding upon them. The Handicap Principle is one of a few theories on explaining cooperative behavior in different species and the authors here give it a good starting point to their theory. It seems that several theories stemming from evolutionary research need to use the cooperation they often rave about and come together to overcome their flaws.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on evolution in many years.......2000-05-19

Why does the peacock grow that tail? Why does the springbok leap straight up into the air when it sees a predator? Why do people behave heroically? The handicap principle answers these questions, eloquently, simply and with an overwhelming sense of conviction. The peacock is advertising his fitness. He is saying to the female in essence, I am so fit I can carry around this cumbersome adornment and still scratch out a very fine living. The springbok is saying to the predator: don't even think about going after me. I am in such good shape I can waste energy jumping up and down and still have plenty of reserves to outrun you. Save us both the bother and go after someone weaker. (By the way, the springbok jumps straight up instead of sideways because by jumping straight up its performance can be effectively judged by a predator from any direction.) And the man who dives into the swiftly flowing river to save a drowning child is actually advertising his fitness and improving his station in society. He is so fit he can take chances that others dare not. He's the man the women want to mate with.

The Handicap Principle thus is about signals, signals between prey and predator, between one sex and the other, and between the individual and the group. The purpose of these signals is to display in an unequivocal way the fitness of the signaler. Note that such signals have to be "fake proof." They have to be what the authors call "reliable." An animal that can't run fast and has limited resources of energy can't waste them jumping in the air. It needs to get going immediately or to stay hidden if it is to have any chance of survival. A man leads with his chin. That's a signal that he's confident. When men had beards it was a little dangerous to stick your chin out since the other guy might grab your beard and you could be in trouble. People demonstrate wealth by wasting money. This is a "reliable" (if ugly) signal because without an ample supply of money, you can't afford to waste it.

Part of the beauty of this book comes from the personality of the authors, who spent a large part of their lives studying little babbler birds in Israel. I feel I know these little social birds just from the loving descriptions in the text. One can see that even though the Zahavis made their discovery of the handicap principle in 1975 and waited almost two decades before it was generally accepted in the scientific community, they harbor no bitterness, nor is their tone at all gloating. They come across as hard-working field scientists who love their work and nature.

Besides being full of exciting and original ideas, The Handicap Principle is also extremely well written. Each sentence is clear and to the point without the burden of unnecessary jargon or the wordy clumsiness sometimes found in such books. Amotz and Avishag Zahavi took great pride in effectively communicating their ideas to a wide audience. Additionally there are scores of exquisite, loving little black and white drawings by illustrator Amir Balaban of animals, birds, insects and people, etc., illuminating the text.

If you're interested in evolutionary theory, this is a book not to be missed. As Jared Diamond says on the cover, "Read this fine book, and discover what the excitement is all about."

This very readable book covers a wide range of biological behavior, and really demonstrates the reality of the Handicap Principle. Not only am I convinced of its truth, but now understand much more about human behavior than before.

I thought the book was fun in a cute way. You know from the beginning how it's going to end for the most part, but I have to admit I was disappointed in the ending itself. I won't give it away but I felt like the book just completely fell apart in the last few pages. The come-uppance for the bad guy was a direct steal from a well known movie (and I mean down to the last detail) and then it was just over. However, that said, I will probably give one of her other books a try just out of curiosity.

1 out of 5 stars Take a Detour from this!.......2003-04-12

I was very disappointed with this book. I enjoy comedies, but the majority of the laughs the author aimed for came out of condescending insults from the main character toward her family members and co-workers she deemed beneath her. The humor was mostly cynical, ranging from jabs at egotistical rabbis to looking down on boring housewives.

I also take issue with writers who seem to think their readers are stupid. What I mean is, when a writer actually points out to the reader that he/she has made a pun by writing "(pardon the pun)" after a sentence, that just feels wrong! The same thing occured after the writer made a double entendre (which I'm sure she was just so pleased with and just wanted to make sure that us mere non-writers didn't miss it). And when the main character, Annie, actually yells "Nah-nah-nah-nah-nah!" at a mobster (who, by the way can't hear her), I felt like I had regressed to junior high reading!

And could someone explain the relevance of pointing out the nationality of EVERY taxi driver in the story? Was it to point out her "brilliant" observation that every immigrant coming in feels they have a right to drive a cab? I personally found this point questionably offensive. And comparing a nervous character to a "masturbating adolescent" was over-the-top for me. That last reference made it clear how hard the author was trying to be funny.

Personally, I found the story slow and the mystery predictable. The author wastes time by continuing to remind us at every scene that 1. Annie is dead. 2. No one can hear her (yet she still tries to get through to people with incessant ranting) and 3.They are trying to find a connection between the murderer and the mob. These are things that we as readers knew and were not with such short attention spans that we forgot the plot of the book.

I felt this book would have been much better if the author had actually been comedic rather than insulting various characters and had given up writing down to her audience and assuming that people who actually pick up her book to read for pleasure might actually have the brains to read it.

                          5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, entertaining book!.......2003-02-23

You suspect that a story told from a dead person's point-of-view might be morbid or depressing, but Joanne Meyer tends to keep it light and entertaining as Annie Dowd recounts the story of her mysterious drowning and teams up with her ex-husband and two detectives to find out who caused her untimely demise.
You'll find yourself laughing out loud as Annie and her team untangle a web of deception and mystery. I finished this book in a weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the ending (this is one whodoneit that you won't figure out in the first few chapters!)...Meyer writes in a style that reminds me of Ayelet Waldman mixed with Janet Evanovich. Mystery lovers who like a mix of comedy and memorable characters will enjoy "Heavenly Detour!" Meyer now joins my list of authors to watch for!

5 out of 5 stars comedic who-done-it along the lines of TOPPER.......2003-02-02

Anne Dowd makes a decent living working for Royal Roosts, a real estate firm dealing in uptown Manhattan rentals and sub leases. The whole office is invited to spend July 4th at the owner Agnes Spurgeon's country estate in Sand Point, Long Island. When Annie arrives she meets Michael Rheims, a gorgeous Brit, who puts the moves on her. Anne isn't unhappy with this development but before she gets to enjoy it for very long, she winds up floating dead in the swimming pool.

Annie's ghost lingers on Earth watching the crime scene unfold, observing her family grieve for her, and seeing her ex-husband come home to help the police find out who murdered her. She is able to communicate with only one person, a female detective assigned to her case who takes Annie's presence as an additional aid in solving the case. Everyone, including Annie, comes to the conclusion that the person who killed her is someone she knew and probably trusted.

This is not a dark, foreboding or depressing mystery but a comedic who-done-it along the lines of TOPPER. The heroine has a tongue in check attitude about her own death so the reader doesn't feel morbid because an innocent person was killed. Joanne Meyer's debut novel is exceedingly well written with brilliant characterizations.
