Book Description

"They say if you give a man a fish, you can feed him for a day. . . Teach him how to fish, and he can eat for a lifetime. In The SmartMoney Stock Picker's Bible, Peter Finch teaches people how to invest rather than to simply pick out a few hot stocks. His insights on the investing process will teach people how to make money for a lifetime!"-Ron Insana, Coanchor, CNBC's Business Center

"Forget the gurus, pundits, and the latest `hot' mutual fund manager. This book is what you need to make money in the stock market, whether you're a novice or experienced investor. It distills the essence of what makes SmartMoney a great magazine and empowers readers to make their own intelligent, profitable decisions. I know from experience that investors can do better than the market averages, and this book is the place to begin."-James B. Stewart, market columnist and bestselling author of Den of Thieves

"One of the only guides for the investor who wants to make money without running undue risks. The stress on long-term values makes it a bible for the hungry but prudent-minded future mogul. The plain-spoken prose makes it a primer for everyone else. In fact, the glossary alone should earn this book a place on every investor's shelf."-Roger Lowenstein, bestselling author of Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist and When Genius Failed: The Rise and Fall of Long-Term Capital Management

This book is not well written and seemed like the sections were not in order. Morningstar's book on stock investing is the best...buy that one!

3 out of 5 stars Good resource, short on content..........2002-06-13

This is not the best investment book I have ever read, but it does have some very interesting and helpful tips. I was dissapointed that the book is only 191 pages of actual "text," while the rest is a large glossary of investment terms not necessarily related to the discussions in the book. I think better books have been written on so-called "value investing" (the method used by Smartmoney). Try Michael Vick's "How to Pick Stocks like Warren Buffett."

1 out of 5 stars Stock Picker's Bible - neither a good pick or a bible.......2002-04-30

I was disappointed as to how little information was in this book. Additionally, several pages of the were printed out of sequence. I had the feeling this thing was thrown together. Some 64 of the book's 280 pages is a glossary. Don't waste your money. Shame on you Nellie and Peter.

Smart Money writers know how to do their homework. They explain why even the most appealing stocks may not be right for your portfolio. This book explains--in understandable terms--how you can follow the stock market and buy the stocks that work for you, not every other investor. This is a concise and understandable investing book.

nice to have a coherent and sensible book about the market for once (especially considering how the market is now). the book laid out investment tips that i found really helpful. from smartmoney, though, what else would you expect?

Book Description

The student first prepares materials in an exercise book and then goes to the computer to do the exercise. All of the information necessary to prepare for a computer exercise is contained in the book. No exercise is a prerequisite for another. The exercises seek to present challenges and questions instead of leading students through an error-free educational experience. Although the exercises eventually evaluate student answers, they sometimes hold back immediate feedback in favor of development of a line of questions. Each exercise has specific goals.

My civil procedure course was taught by one of the authors so he strongly suggested that we use this as a supplement. Using it along with the CALI exercises was helpful in gaining a practical understanding of such topics like discovery, summary judgment, and judgment as a matter of law.
I don't recommend purchasing this unless you are specifically going to do the authored CALI exercises, as the book is tailored to them.

    Book Description

An abundantly illustrated guide to the year's best stargazing season.

"Summer brings with it fine stargazing weather; it also happens to be the time of the year when our galaxy, the Milky Way, arches high across the sky."
    -- Terence Dickinson

The cool, clear nights from May to October offer astronomers the best opportunities for stargazing. Few sights in nature can compare with the splendor of a dazzling star-filled sky.

Summer Stargazing captures the grandeur of the universe with down-to-earth simplicity. All that is needed is a reasonably dark night sky, a pair of binoculars or a simple telescope, and this book.

The book features everything else the amateur astronomer needs, including easy-to-use color star charts that cover the entire North American sky for one year and photographic-quality charts for this main stargazing season.

With Summer Stargazing, astronomers can delve into the majesty of the starry night to explore:

Helpful advice is given for safely viewing special phenomena such as eclipses and auroras.

Summer Stargazing is both a stargazing guide and a pictorial celebration of the summer night sky.

5 out of 5 stars For the right audience, a must have -- read on..........2002-12-13

If you are ages 10-15, or an adult who wants to get "up to speed" on astronomy-speak in under a 5 hour read -- this is the book to own! This chronology of major astrological events to look for in the sky which comes at the end of the book is outdated by a few years due to the publish date, but the sky charts (actually full page photos) -- specifically and only for summer months in the U.S. -- were actually usable! Also useful was the section on purchasing a telescope for a novice or even decent binoculars (a $50 investment to start was recommended, imagine that!). Also, a handy refernce for dates of meteor showers is a great thing for kids in large groups. And for a freeze-baby who lives in a northern climate who only takes the time to stargaze on warm, summer, cloudless nights, this is the only book I need.

5 out of 5 stars You'll pull this book out time and time again........2000-11-15

My third year of owning this great night time aid has only increased my appreciation of what lies above. This book has great reference guides for planetary location, eclipse tables, lunar maps, and enough material for the person observing with binicoulars (which I started out with), to someone with an intermediate telescope (I moved up to a 6" reflector because I wanted to see more of what is presented). The lay-out of the book is very straight forward, and any one may pick it up and begin to locate everything pictured. Owners of small refracter telescopes will find renewed interest in what they will be able to view with the help of this book. A must have companion if you starting out, an old friend as time goes by.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Pictures but too little material........1999-01-11

This book is a handy book with nice pictures for starters . There should be more materials than these as the pages are filled with more pictures than words and too little explainations. There are too little detail or advice or tips said about stargazing as the main subject. Conslusion: Good, but should contain about 50% more materials and advices/details.

5 out of 5 stars Amateur friendly with photos and common sense.......1998-06-29

There will be a glut of astronomy books as we approach the millenium. If you want a classic, timeless dose of education and common sense this is the book for you. The best summer nights since Grease.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent Guide for kids and adults........1998-04-24

This is an excellent guide to the night sky. It is great for kids and adults alike. I especially like the use of actual photos of the sky with and without diagrams of the constellations (not just charts or drawings.) This makes it much easier to find them in the sky.

            Book Description

Owing its inspiration and title to On the Origin of Phlya, James W. Valentine's ambitious book synthesizes and applies the vast treasury of theory and research collected in the century and a half since Darwin's time. By investigating the origins of life's diversity, Valentine unlocks the mystery of the origin of phyla.

One of the twentieth century's most distinguished paleobiologists, Valentine here integrates data from molecular genetics, evolutionary developmental biology, embryology, comparative morphology, and paleontology into an analysis of interest to scholars from any of these fields. He begins by examining the sorts of evidence that can be gleaned from fossils, molecules, and morphology, then reviews and compares the basic morphology and development of animal phyla, emphasizing the important design elements found in the bodyplans of both living and extinct phyla. Finally, Valentine undertakes the monumental task of developing models to explain the origin and early diversification of animal phyla, as well as their later evolutionary patterns.

Truly a magnum opus, On the Origin of Phyla will take its place as one of the classic scientific texts of the twentieth century, affecting the work of paleontologists, morphologists, and developmental, molecular, and evolutionary biologists for decades to come.

"A magisterial compendium . . . . Valentine offers a judicious evaluation of an astonishing array of evidence."—Richard Fortey, New Scientist

"Truly a magnum opus, On the Origin of Phyla has already taken its place as one of the classic scientific texts of the twentieth century, affecting the work of paleontologists, morphologists, and developmental, molecular, and evolutionary biologists for decades to come."—Ethology, Ecology & Evolution

"Valentine is one of the Renaissance minds of our time. . . . Darwin wisely called his best-known work On the Origin of the Species; the origin of the phyla is an even stickier problem, and Valentine deserves credit for tackling it at such breadth . . . . A magnificient book."—Stefan Bengtson, Nature

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Review.......2006-09-04

This is an excellent review that follows current thinking in modern invertebrate taxonomy. The author does not take any controversial positions, and discusses the uncertainties where they are. He provides what i think is an excellent basic review of the biology necessary to understand the book, although when reading a book that is on a subject that is not unfamiliar it is always difficult to judge how easy it would be for someone with less knowledge on the subject. Even though the paperback version being sold is july 2006, it is impossible to have a review that is entirely to the date. If you read source articles you will realize that mitochondrial DNA studies fairly convincingly place placazoa basal to porifera, and a new molecular analysis places urochordates closer to craniata (vertebrata)than cephalochordata, but i am not aware of any summary that includes info that new.

5 out of 5 stars Tough, but rewarding.......2006-03-15

The title says it all, this is a book about the evolution of phyla. It's a fairly advanced book, if you don't know what a phylum is or what natural selection is you'll probably find it a very rough go. However you don't have to be an expert, I'm certainly not, to enjoy it and learn from it.

The book starts off by covering a lot of background biology. The first chapter covers very basic topics relating to classifying animals such as: what phyla are, why it's useful to study homologues, the nature of hierarchies and cladistics.

The second chapter covers cellular biology. This quickly moves from the study of single cells to how cells aggregate to form tissues, organs and other body parts. This sets the stage for the following chapters that discuss body plans and how their development is determined by a system of regulatory genes, not just individual alleles.

Following this is a discussion of the fossil record, a high level view of the phyla and how they are related to each other. Much of the rest of the book is spent elaborating on this material.

The first section concludes with a discussion of the Cambrian Explosion. The main ideas he describes are: there was no explosion, it was due to physical changes in the environment, it was due to a biological changes in the environment or it was due to an intrinsic evolutionary change. Needles to say it's an open question and the author couldn't give a definitive answer. As more material is covered the question is addressed several times later in the book.

This first part of the book alone made it worth it to me.

The next six chapters form the heart of the book, they give a very detailed account of the phyla. More than just a catalog, it presents how the phyla are related to each other and how they are broken up into subphyla and classes. The evidence from the fossil record is continually presented and details of the body plans of the phyla are illustrated with specific examples. The level of detail is fantastic.

Give the title there probably isn't much of a chance that someone would pick this book up for a casual read. It's even more rigorous and complete than I expected. However, there is a lot of background material (which is quite interesting in its own right) and things are pretty much explained from the ground up. The bits of humor in the book were enjoyable, I especially appreciated the dig at postmodernism on page 78. A non-expert, like me, can benefit from reading this book and enjoy it too, but should be ready for a tough read (for me the most difficult part was the vast amount of terminology, but the glossary helped to offset that). I would expect that people with more expertise will likely enjoy it even more.

            5 out of 5 stars Fascinating topic.......2006-01-08

This is a fantastic book that discusses in great (sometimes excruciating) detail the morphological, developmental, fossil, molecular, and other evidence regarding the definitions, circumscriptions, origins, evolution, and interrelationships of the phyla. Mostly well and clearly written although the text is at times frustratingly redundant, and it will probably be difficult reading for anybody without an intense interest in, and some basic knowledge of, biology. However, it is a must-read for anybody who is interested in this topic.

            5 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Achievement.......2005-04-22

With new evidence from molecular sequencing, the study of evolutionary development and the discovery of exceptionally preserved fossils of Precambrian and Cambrian age, the reality of evolution cannot be denied. Valentine embraces these fields with his experience and authority as a professor emeritus of integrative biology at UCB, who has been publishing novel and provocative ideas on the origin and nature of phyla for more than 30 years. This book is essentially about the Cambrian radiation, the event that gave rise to most of the major animal groups. The book's particular strength is its integration of data from paleontology and biology. This book is a remarkable achievement, a timely synthesis of the current state of this exciting field. It may be a bit of a tedious read for many, but a must for anyone who wants to understand evolution at its core.

5 out of 5 stars An important work, but hard going.......2004-12-31

I am a biologist yet found this book a hard study. No, I didn't READ it, I studied it. That's what is required. My little corner of biology is not evolutionary biology, so this book was a bit off my beaten track. For those with the determination, this is a very rewarding work, and may become a classic. It lacks a good glossary; the one it has seems to have been thrown together as an afterthought. The illustrations could benefit from serious upgrading. Yet with these minor faults, I still rate this book as 5 stars. A truly marvelous work.

Shortly after his defeat in the 1996 U.S. presidential election, Republican Bob Dole was invited to appear on David Letterman's Late Show. Letterman asked Dole about President Clinton's weight, but Dole wasn't taking the bait. "I never tried to lift him," he retorted. "I just tried to beat him." That was the first time many Americans got to see a side of Bob Dole rarely revealed to the public during his 36 years on Capitol Hill--the dry, wicked sense of humor that quickly became a defining characteristic of his postpolitical career.

Great Political Wit collects some of Bob Dole's favorite humorous anecdotes about American politicians--and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who gets most of the handful of truly savage putdowns. (Told by one female member of the House of Commons that he was drunk, Churchill replied, "You're ugly, and tomorrow morning I'll be sober, but you'll still be ugly.") If you like the "Laughter Is the Best Medicine" section of Reader's Digest, the stories about pols like Ronald Reagan, Tip O'Neill, and Woodrow Wilson are sure to make you smile. This reviewer's candidate for the funniest American president, though, would have to be Calvin Coolidge, especially after reading about the time that, at a ceremony for the laying of a cornerstone, Coolidge turned over a spadeful of dirt and then fell silent. Prompted by the master of ceremonies to say something, Coolidge looked down at the ground and remarked, "That's a fine fish worm." --Ron Hogan

                                    Book Description

Bob Dole's political career may not have taken him to the White House, but he did pick up some great stories along the way. In this delightful collection, the longtime United States senator shares his favorite anecdotes, witticisms, and reminiscences.
From the campaign trail to the Oval Office, from smoke-filled rooms to the chambers of the Capitol, Bob Dole surveys a century of political wit.  There are bon mots from Calvin Coolidge, Winston Churchill, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, and a host of other political figures. Bob Dole introduces each section with mirthful moments from his own experience, displaying the gift for wry humor that has made him a favorite guest on late-night talk shows.
A jovial--and completely bipartisan--compendium, Great Political Wit is a connoisseur's selection of political repartee at its best.

Bob Dole may have lost the 1996 presidential election, but he has since won the hearts of Americans with his endearing and uproarious appearances on "Late Night with David Letterman, " "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, " and even "Saturday Night Live." "Great Political Wit of the 20th Century" is his handpicked collection of some of the funniest remarks tossed off by, and about, the political figures of this century.

3 out of 5 stars A trace of history and a tinge of humor.......2007-08-26

I wasn't sure if the title of this little book was intended to imply that the author, Bob Dole, laughed, or almost laughed, as he almost became President of the United States or that the book, itself, was intended to be almost funny. I hoped for the latter and found that to be true. That's not to say that the book wasn't interesting, but taken out of context most of the quotes seemed to fall a little flat. To me, it was like reading a book of the 1000 funniest jokes. If you have ever attempted it, you likely found, as I did, that few, if any, struck you as funny. What was missing was the context, the spontaneity, and especially the teller -- the Bob Hope, the Robin Williams, your best friend, or your drinking companion.

But, if you read this book closely, you will find that it sheds some light on our nation's political history, at least since Thomas Jefferson's time, and reveals that politicians and the reporting media haven't changed much over the years.

So, if you are interested in politics/politicians and are looking for a book with a trace of history and tinge of humor, you might find this one to be to your liking. As for myself, I particularly enjoyed the sage observations of Ronald Reagan and the wit and humor of Winston Churchill and that great humorist, Calvin Coolidge. Brevity, as they say, is the soul of wit. But, in my view, true wit is the ability to capture concisely the essence of a situation and express the truth of it in a humorous or meaningful way. And no one was better at doing that than Ronald Reagan. Fortunately, this little book is replete with many his witty pronouncements.

5 out of 5 stars Funny stuff from a fabulous person.......2007-07-20

Bob Dole is a very funny guy. He has seen and done so much and is able to laugh about so many great things.

5 out of 5 stars Funny stuff! Completely bipartisan........2006-10-02

I received this as a gift from my stepmother -- an autographed copy! In this completely bipartisan volume, former Senator and Vice-Presidential and Presidential candidate Bob Dole has compiled a collection of his favorite quotes from politicians and those around them -- with great success.

There are quotes about every aspect of politics -- public speaking, religion, the economy, war, the vice-presidency, losing, etc -- from American history's wittiest politicians such as Calvin Coolidge and Ronald Reagan. There's a final section full of late-night TV show jokes made about Bob Dole.

There's little more to say about this book -- it is what it is, and it succeeds in its purpose.

A real treat for any lover of political humor!

4 out of 5 stars A book to enjoy front to back or for just dipping into.......2003-12-08

This is a very enjoyable book. Bob Dole has a fine sense of humor and has selected witty sayings by politicians on a variety of topics in a range of situations. Senator Dole has organized them topically and I found all of them funny and many of them hilarious. A few are even worth committing to memory.

It isn't a long book, but it offers a lot of great stories. What is even better is that Mr. Dole shares his own knowledge of some of the people he quotes in the book and of the institutions in Washington that he knows so well. It is a book you can enjoy reading from front to back or just dipping into briefly again and again.

A word to speakers who would use the anecdotes from this book: be careful. I remember when this book first came out and politicians everywhere were quoting this or that story from it and it was a bit embarrassing to hear. This kind of humor is something that has to be used with a delicate touch and with the best style and timing. You can't just say the words and expect the big laugh. It just doesn't work that way. I always enjoyed Senator Dole's sense of humor and he could pull it off with a bit of an acerbic touch. Some folks didn't like that spice, but I always did.

5 out of 5 stars Great political wit, old and new.......2003-09-06

Bob Dole has penned a charming little book here. Political humor may seem lacking in today's age of attack and sound bite --the Senator shows otherwise with wit old and new alike.

This book is a must-have for any aspiring public speaker. It is choke full of material to use in openers or comebacks. It also reminds one of the consistently great wit of Senator Dole himself -- a fact obscured by the somewhat grouchy persona generated for him by the media.

Were it to be updated anytime soon, I'd have to recommend a line spoken by California Gubernatorial Recall candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger after being pelted by an egg while wading through a crowd, "That man owes me bacon, there's no two ways about it!"
