Book Description
Today's competitive environment requires that companies distinguish themselves in the marketplace using factors other than prices. Companies that excel at on-time delivery, short cycle/leadtime, quality, and fast response to the market gain a competitive edge - and have the ability to market based on these features. A proven approach to achieve this is the Theory of Constraints (TOC) production solution known, as drum-buffer-rope scheduling. Just in time (JIT), Total Quality Management (TQM) and other philosophies aim at exploiting these competitive edge factors. However, accounting systems, financial, and incentive measurements continue to be the biggest stumbling blocks to companies wishing to improve their financial performance with these tools. Agreement on the need for a measurement system that encourages local actions in line with bottom line results is common, but solutions have remained elusive. Whether a company is pursuing JIT, TQM, or TOC, cost accounting is the common enemy. Attempts have been made to introduce "new" costing methods such as activity based costing and economic value added, but they have failed to recognize the basic difference between product costing for financial statement purposes and collective management information to make real time decisions. The Measurement Nightmare shows you how to resolve the conflicts and remove the accounting systems, financial, and incentive measurement roadblocks to adopting TOC, thereby gaining improved performance and sustaining competitive advantage. The techniques that the author, leading authority Debra Smith, has implemented and tracked at various companies highlight "the productivity measurement nightmare". Especially important are the day-to-day tools she developed to ensure successful implementation.
Customer Reviews:
Debra Smith.......2006-05-15
Debra knows and applies TOC as well as anyone including Goldratt. This book is still a key part to understanding TOC.
Good book, but stack it with others..........2005-10-21
This is a grate book that explains how measurment indicators might confuse management, and make mistakes that really happen in buissness. In states several measurment indicators based on TOC that help in understanding what should be done in the company.
Very good book, but if you want to learn about TOC, you should stack it with other TOC books.
Great TOC book.......2004-04-12
Debra has done a nice job with this book. I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about Theory of Constraints.
Great Material - Difficult Read.......2004-02-24
This is an excellent book if you are serious about TOC. It covers the basic how-to subjects currently in the liturature, and goes into new territory showing how to reconcile Management/Throughput Accounting with GAAP Acounting. Despite the great material I have two complaints: 1) The book is difficult to read due to the small font and wordy style 2) The book fails to recognize the existance of Lean Manufacturing and Six-Sigma tools that could break the dilemia presented about sprint capacity and buffer size. The second issue is one that any experience practitioner of Lean/6-sigma will easily recognise and correct.
Getting to the core of the problem.......2003-05-22
The book focusses on the root problem behind all those dysfunctional metrics around us. It explains very clearly (also for people not trained in financial jargon) how the wrong focus on the wrong metrics in the top of the organization can have impact on the complete organization and may impact negatively the quality of decisions throughout the company.
Very much recommended!

Book Description
The German works councils enjoy far-reaching powers and can exert tremendous influence, which creates an indisputable danger of abuse of power. However, the employees and employer are scarcely protected from any breaches of duty it may commit. The legal protection provided in the industrial governance regulations is still insufficiently developed. On the other hand, the powers of the unions in the United States of America have long since been limited by the duty of fair representation. In a state governed by the rule of law, it must be possible to hold anyone exercising power accountable. Proceeding from this principle, the author develops and proposes a comprehensive system of legal protection on a civil law basis. Today, in light of the reform of the Works Constitution Act which was agreed upon in the German federal government's coalition agreement, this work is of great topical immediacy and represents an important contribution to questions of legal policy.
Book Description
Almost every serious amateur astronomer knows the benefit of having a fixed observatory of some sort - it saves a vast amount of time and effort during every observing session - and this book provides the necessary help. More Small Astronomical Observatories details the methods and techniques employed by non-professional astronomers from all over the world, providing a wonderful resource for anyone wishing to build a small observatory of almost any kind. It's a fun read, too.
Customer Reviews:
more small astronnomical observatories.......2006-07-09
It a good book but it is out to date ,it is a good think who some one make a new book for this subject astronomical observatories amateur...
A Wealth of Ideas!.......2006-05-27
Sir Patrick Moore adds another wonderful book to his many! Anyone sincerely interested in configuring and erecting a custom observatory would find this invaluable. The initial offering is now out of print, but the editors and Sir Moore have kindly included a CD rendition of it.
Good for giving ideas.......2003-03-06
This book is not a step-by-step guide. Moore never says it would be. It allows you to see what others have built and get ideas for your own observatory - what is a better/different way to do what I want. An added bonus is that his first book (Small Astronomical Observatories) is included as a CD in the back (I had been looking for it for a while with no luck).
Most observatories are going to be of simple construction. If you can drive a nail and cut a piece of wood, you are well on your way. A bit of cement work and you are 99% there. I used information from 4 units to design my own. Yes, some of the designs are on the internet and he gives web addresses where they exists.
It meets my needs for information and I would not hesitate to suggest this book to anyone thinking about building a small observatory.
more small astronomical observatories.......2002-09-01
This book is as if you had a... tour through a garden of private observatories. There is very little technical content to be gleamed if you were wanting to make your own observatory and how to control it. Most of the material that is there, can be easily found in minutes on the internet. If I could give a lower rating I would. It was a waste of my money

Book Description
Nicholas Wade's articles are a major reason why the science section has become the most popular, nationwide, in the New York Times. In his groundbreaking Before the Dawn, Wade reveals humanity's origins as never beforea journey made possible only recently by genetic science, whose incredible findings have answered such questions as: What was the first human language like? How large were the first societies, and how warlike were they? When did our ancestors first leave Africa, and by what route did they leave? By eloquently solving these and numerous other mysteries, Wade offers nothing less than a uniquely complete retelling of a story that began 500 centuries ago.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing combination of science and history.......2007-09-14
Wade effectively recreates the history of our human ancestors by combining the disciplines of science and history. Some parts were clearly controversial, (his assertion that race does, in fact, have a biological basis) but I think such controversial assertions only add interest to a book and allow the reader to enter into an imaginary dialogue with the author. Wade's criticisms of Diamond (Gun's, Germs and Steel" and "Collapse") were a little harsh and just incorrect in my opinion. This book is ideal for anyone with an interdisciplinary interest in science and history.
Well written, good science, and fascinating.......2007-08-28
Since 1968 when I received my BA in Cultural Anthropology, the science about human origins has gone through radical change. Back then we were taught that moderns humans emerged about 40K years ago and have not changed since then. Nicholas Wade explains how modern genetic researcher reveals that we are still an evolving species. I appreciated Wade's clear and entertaining writing style. I think that if every high school teacher in the country read this book it would bring us out of the mythological dark ages and seperate two completely valid realms, science and religion.
A great read.......2007-08-12
Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in human pre-history. A well written overview of human origins and culture that highlights recent findings in molecular genetics (DNA sequencing and gene function) that provide unique insights into where we came from and how we got here. Very read-able, the author does a great job of making the information accessible to, and understandable by, all.
This field has NOT been standing still!.......2007-08-10
Wade reports diligently on many breakthroughs in understanding human prehistory made possible by the melding of genetic with archaeological evidence. Much of this insight has been achieved in just the last few years, thanks to computerized tools for analyzing the genome. If you have not been following this field closely, you'll be astonished at the progress.
Sometimes the "asides" are gripping. There are just a few pages about the domestication of the dog, for instance, that alone almost make the book worth the read. It seems that all modern dogs were derived from (most likely) a single litter of wolves in central Asia, and startlingly recently -- 15,000 years ago. They had three genetic changes that specialized them for domestication -- "tamability", a tendency to bark (wolves can bark but hardly ever do), and a knack for reading human body language. The combination of these traits made dogs indispensable, and they spread across Eurasia in the blink of an eye. The initiative for domestication probably sprang from the wolves themselves (Wade explains why). This is just a tiny sample of the book; there's a lot more like it.
How did I get here?.......2007-07-31
An interesting explanation of human evolution based on genetic discoveries. If you want to know why you look the way you do, live where you live, talk and behave the way you do this book provides some answers. Many interesting insights into modern animal and human societies. This book covers a lot of ground in an understandable way.

Double the Fun!.......2006-12-07
A Cowboy Never Lies was a hysterical first effort and now Dan Burnett has penned the second volume of short stories: A Cowboy Never Lies 2.
This is a great book and just as funny as the first, if you can imagine that. Kudos to Mr. Burnett for publishing two winners in a row!
A Rokit-Signrests Cowboy Review.......2000-07-16
Hoss reminds me of the crazy cowboys I dealt with in the mid-60s working out of White Deer, Texas. I strapped Old Billy B. on many snot slinging cowboy killing mad North Texas bulls. Dan Burton is a world-class story teller of the first order. The pranks and antics that he tells about brought long ago not forgotten memories. I really think both books I & II are first class. I have recommended them to all of my remaining friends. Thank You Dan Burton, you have given me lots of laughs and pleasure.

" Is this guy for real?".......1999-07-03
Just when I thought I'd heard about everything, this man is one of kind. I not only have read his incredible adventures, but met the man for real. He is all he says and more. Don't pass a chance to read his books, and if he crosses your path, you will walk away laughing and wanting to hear more.
