Gerald Ashley's book is a trenchant analysis of many issues associated with the stock market. Calling on his own extensive experience and utilizing a variety of keen arguments, he clearly explains the failure of technical analysis, the appeal of behavioral finance, and a host of other matters. A very satisfying read.

All individual in any organization should be introduced to these common practices. Excellent Book.......2005-12-09

I enjoyed this book a lot. At the end of each chapter, the author lists 4 or 5 best practices for avoiding/ending the malpractice of whichever management principle is being discussed in that chapter. These best practices are some of the best suggestions/ideas I have come across. This book is an important read for executives and managers, but equally useful for line staff.

Relevant book for today's business climate.......2005-10-27

This book is extremely relevant to today's business environment. I thought Craig Hickman's take was very unique; not at all the usual fare. He argues that the biggest problem facing organizations is the devolvement of noble management principles. Every corporation woud likely claim that they abide by the 25 management principles Hickman discusses (i.e. Respect Others, Challenge Assumptions, Create Trust, Eliminate Organizational Barriers, etc.), but how many of them actually do? The biggest problem isn't a lack of noble management principles, it is the rampant abuse of already existing ones. This devolvement, if left unchecked, could be what we pass on to the next generation.

After reading this book, I decided to stand up against the management malpractice going on in my organization. Thanks to Hickman's persuasive style and dead-on insights, I realized that I don't have to put up with the nonsense that goes on in my organization. This book has given me a number of ideas that I've already started to implement. One way or another, the management malpractice in my organization is going to get exposed. I've had enough. The website that goes along with this book is fantastic and very helpful.

AN EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO WEEKS' IDEAS.......2004-12-08

I recommend working through this book before you attempt to read Weeks' SHAPES OF SPACE. These activities are intended for middle school but I think they could easily be used in a college level Liberal Arts Math Course and plan on trying them out. The book comes with a cd-rom containing a nice video that will help you visualize the three dimensional manifolds Weeks discusses. All in all a great resource.

Although ecologists have long considered morphology and life history to be important determinants of the distribution, abundance, and dynamics of plants in nature, this book contains the first theory to predict explicitly both the evolution of plant traits and the effects of these traits on plant community structure and dynamics. David Tilman focuses on the universal requirement of terrestrial plants for both below-ground and above-ground resources. The physical separation of these resources means that plants face an unavoidable tradeoff. To obtain a higher proportion of one resource, a plant must allocate more of its growth to the structures involved in its acquisition, and thus necessarily obtain a lower proportion of another resource. Professor Tilman presents a simple theory that includes this constraint and tradeoff, and uses the theory to explore the evolution of plant life histories and morphologies along productivity and disturbance gradients.

The book shows that relative growth rate, which is predicted to be strongly influenced by a plant's proportional allocation to leaves, is a major determinant of the transient dynamics of competition. These dynamics may explain the differences between successions on poor versus rich soils and suggest that most field experiments performed to date have been of too short a duration to allow unambiguous interpretation of their results.

I bought the first edition, which was filled with typos and really bad grammar. Well... at least the typos were fixed. :)
Seriously, I don't know what to say. This book (at 57 pages I hesitate to call it a book) is either the absolutely WORST book ever written or it will be considered a classic 20 years from now. The character is a guy named Jerry Barry who is an absolute nut case. Or is he? That's what I mean. The whole book is a roller coaster. You HATE the guy, then you feel sorry for him, then you want to kill him, then you like him. He's probably Holden Caulfield's evil twin brother, seperated at birth. All that said, I've read it about 25 times. I keep saying I'm going to trash it then I find myself reading it again. Because of that I gave it 4 stars. The only reason I didn't go with 5 is because at 57 pages it's a little overpriced at $10.99. My reccomendation is buy it, or don't buy it, or buy it. I'm SO confused!
